Helping herself to another glass of orange juice, Ruby noticed Ryan enter the Great Hall. He looked exhausted, probably from walking down all the stairs that led to Ravenclaw Tower. Thank god the Hufflepuff common room was easy to access. No stairs to climb or passwords to remember.
With her tummy now filled with toast, orange juice and pancakes, Ruby gazed up and down the table, looking for a fellow housemate, or even someone from another house, that she could possibly start a discussion with. "So, anybody want to talk? I'm open to a conversation."
Kier noticed Mathias appear and raised his head to look at the boy with a smirk as he sat down at their table. He wasn't surprised to hear the stick hadn't revealed anything yet, but he did feel a tad disappointed about it. Under his sleeves his forearms and hands were still pretty bruised from the experience, but the aloe had helped a lot, and even with his sore reminder, he knew he honestly couldn't say he wouldn't try it again in a heartbeat.
"If you break it I'm sure we could get another. After all, we know more about how it thinks now." There was a definite mischievous gleam to his eyes as he spoke, propping his elbow on the table and resting his cheek on his palm to study the Raven boy. His gaze shifted to the newspaper for a brief moment but he really didn't have much interest in it. He knew someone was messing with muggles, but unlike Cafell who was probably having a field day, Kier couldn't care less.
"No solid plans yet, still working on it." Kier smiled and gave a nod of acknowledgment to Adeline as he recognized her from the night before. He wasn't sure how the two knew each other but he didn't really care enough to ask either. Knowing this place it could be anything, but judging by Mathias' ruffling her hair earlier, he figured it was pretty safe to assume they were siblings.
As Sophia popped out of nowhere and joined them Kier shifted his gaze to her and grinned. "I plan to avoid the common room like the plague until its gone, though I know the others will need their blankets eventually." He had already untied his blanket from the corner where he had strategically placed it, but most of the other boys had a lot of work to do if they wanted to get to their blankets anytime soon.
Kier was about to say more when he heard a small commotion at the Gryffindor table and glanced over. For a few seconds, an oddly serious expression flashed across his face, but it was gone about as quick as it had appeared. Behind his smile, however, he was strangely annoyed by Jacob's little outburst. Perhaps because a part of Kier respected the other boy and he expected a fellow prankster to be a tad smarter, or at least a little more suspicious.
"They may be brave, but damn they turn on friends easily." Kier chuckled and shook his head, once again happy he hadn't chosen to join Gryffindor. He could probably deal with a friend hating him, hell he wouldn't even care if a friend stabbed him, so long as his friend never doubted him. That was where he drew the line.
He nodded to Mathias as the boy headed off before picking up a piece of toast and nibbling it with a mischievous look again, his gaze shifting to Sophia as he raised an eyebrow. "You think if I started a rumor that Lockyer has a crush on Mardling, Thatcher would believe that too?"
Elara watched as Hanna opened her letter, presumably from her grandparents and hoped that it held the answers she desired about what was going on with the muggles. However, her friends answer left her disappointed as apparently, her grandparents held no answers- or at least none that she was interested in. "I just don't understand what anyone gets from pranking muggles" she muttered, finishing off her juice. Elara found it hard to believe that it was merely a prank, muggle hate crimes existed- even if they didn't always make the front page of the prophet.
Hearing Hanna's curiosity directed towards the Gryffindor table, she studied the table with mild interest. She wasn't one who usually partook in gossip but she couldn't deny that it was tempting to venture closer and find out what had stirred up everyone's interests. "I don't know, we'll probably hear about it in class though" she muttered, the hint clear in her words that she wanted Hanna to make an effort and attend. Rumours spread like wildfire around Hogwarts, so whether they wanted to or not, they'd soon learn what all the fuss was about.
Eleanor pursed her lips together tightly, doing everything possible to maintain her composure as Jacob berated her. She didn't deserve any of this, she hadn't done what she was being accused of, and he wasn't even giving her a chance to defend herself before heading as far away from her at the table as possible. She had noticed the hurt look mixed in with all of the anger, and she was torn on what to do next. She hated that he had been hurt by this awful rumor, but he hadn't even asked her if it were true, hadn't even offered her the opportunity to explain herself.
Anger began to rise to the surface; anger at whoever started this rumor, anger at her house for clearly believing it, anger at Jacob for ending their friendship over something that wasn't even true without even having a rational conversation with her. Anger was much easier to deal with than sadness, and she latched onto that like a life preserver.
Eleanor looked at Marrow, giving him a slight smile at his comforting words, and said quietly, "Thank you for your support. But I've got to clear my name."
She stood, slamming her hands onto the table to get the attention of her housemates, and likely others as she wasn't exactly being quiet. Ignoring the fact that creating a scene might possibly land her in official trouble with professors, which would only fuel the Gryffindor rage against her if she lost any of the precious few points they had, she had to do something to clear her name. Obviously, rational conversation wasn't going to be the way to do so.
"Why would I turn in Jacob and Thomas for anything? It doesn't even make sense! Why don't, instead of listening to the rumour mill dominating this school, you try talking to me and asking me if I had done it? I can guarantee you that I wouldn't have lied about it if I had! But instead, you listen to gossip and spread it further without caring at all about the actual person it's about. How long have you guys known me? When have I ever stabbed any of you in the back?"
She marched to Jacob, tears spilling over as she continued, "And you! You're absolutely right, we aren't friends. Friends don't turn on each other because of a stupid rumor. A real friend would have had the decency to at least ASK me what was going on instead of blindly believing anything you heard in the hallways. Did it even occur to you that if this had any truth to it at all, it would have come out last year when Thomas nearly missed playing in the game? Isn't it a little strange it happened the day after the stupid Slytherins were doused in glitter? Did it never occur to you that maybe they started that in an act of retaliation because they're too stupid to figure out who was behind the prank? No, of course, not! You just automatically believed the worst in me and never once gave me the benefit of the doubt! I can't believe I ever even liked you!"
She turned away, covering her face as she began to cry in earnest, completely embarrassed that she had lost her temper and that she was making a scene, completely heartbroken that people automatically assumed she was a traitor without having any proof, and completely miserable that this was happening to her when she hadn't done anything to deserve it. Ignoring everyone at the table, she turned and bolted out the door, not wanting to be around anyone any longer.
Marrow turned to his table looking at them studying people for a long moment. He sighed and couldn't think on what to do there was a mystery afoot. kept thinking on it but made his way over to rubes table where she was at " good morning lady rubes are we exploring later " thinking maybe the distraction would do him some good he cant believe how quick people can turn on each other confirming some beliefs he had on this world.
Still at the Hufflepuff table, Ruby sat watching the world go round and waiting to see if one of her housemates or maybe a student from another house would stop and talk to her. She'd always found it relatively easy to make friends, but the same time, she understood that other students may not. Sometimes kids didn't know what to say to when they met someone for the first time.
Rubes pondered what she and Marrow might find during their exploration of the castle and grounds that day. She particularly wanted to take a walk along the Forest Path.
Hearing her name, Ruby looked round. "Goodmorning,Marrow.Yep,wecan do some exploring today. Howabout we take a walk on the Forest Path?"
Food vanished from the tables as breakfast ended. Several students remained to chat about the Daily Prophet or the recent rumours, but those who had classes to attend quickly gathered their things and left the hall. The staff table was vacant now, with the last few Professors giving Gryffindor table a stern glance as they passed instead of reprimanding Eleanor for her loud interruption during the end of breakfast.
Professor Snape had needed a moment to recover from the surprise of having a Slytherin approach him during the meal, as surely his students had more sense and tact than that - yet he was intrigued. He also said they could approach him (granted, he'd specifically mentioned his office) today if they had information. He rose from the table last and stared Blackwood down for a moment.
'You have class,' he said. 'Perhaps it would be more prudent to discuss matters in my office once you've concluded your morning lesson?' Snape's firm gaze implied that's exactly what was going to happen. He excused himself and left the hall, still shocked by having been approached like that yet trying hard to hide it.
Class threads are now available. Everyone else has free time until lunch.
Ruby was pleased to see that, once again, her day was getting off to a good start. She'd had a delicious, filling breakfast and was ready to start exploring with Marrow. Who knows what they'd find.
“Hey Mathias!” Becca greeted warmly, “I was thinking maybe we could hang out by the lake? Would you mind if my friend, Lailee, joined us? She doesn’t bite.” She glanced in Lailee’s direction questioningly, as if to confirm that she indeed did not bite. “All of her other friends are off doing things together and I don’t want her to be left out.”
She waited for him to agree or not with inviting Lailee along, hopeful because she was unsure of what to do or say if he declined.
The food vanished and she looked around the mostly empty room, “I guess they’re kicking us out regardless.”
"If I'm being honest," Nathan told Lucas with a slight shrug, "I was just planning to wander around until I stumbled upon something interesting enough to warrant my attention."
And indeed, it was the truth. With no real plans in mind, he had planned to look for whatever interesting was happening around the castle this morning. He had hoped that the Gryffindor spat would have provided more entertainment, but seeing as how breakfast was over and the girl had stormed off, those hopes were dashed.
Nathan watched for a brief moment as Becca made plans with a Ravenclaw boy, then turned his attention back to Lucas, "Sometimes you find out the most interesting information by just being in the right place at the right time. Think of all of the opportunities missed when you're not present for that opportune moment."
Noticing Amara had not shown up at breakfast at all, Nathan wondered aloud, "I wonder where Seabrook is? Interesting things always seem to happen wherever she turns up."

Mathias glanced around Becca to Lailee, refreshing his memory of who she was. So long as it wasn't Seabrook, he couldn't see why not?
'Sure. If she's your friend, that's fine.' He nodded enthusiastically. 'You know me, I'm always up for some company. Almost always. Well...Anyway, I do need to make a stop first so if you like I could meet you there?' Mathias frowned, remembering his words from the other day and the fact he never did make it there.
He sighed, then gave Becca an honest look. 'For real, this time - I'll be there.' Mathias nodded. 'I hope the Savannah is okay. Bit of a walk but worth the view, and I wanna check something there while we're at it. If you had somewhere specific in mind, we can go there next?' Mathias pouted as breakfast disappeared. 'Okay, two side trips....' he muttered, adding the kitchen to his mental list.
Forgetting anything else he had to say, Mathias checked Becca didn't have anything else important to ask him before he turned and hurried from the hall in eagerness to get started. A whole morning's free time didn't feel like nearly enough for his ideas, but he'd do his best.
"That's fine, we'll meet you there." Becca said with a smile, trusting that he'd be there if he said he would, not that she would hold it against him if he got caught up with something else. Sometimes that's just how things worked out. She turned to Lailee, nodding towards the door, "Shall we go ahead to the Savannah then? See, I told you he wouldn't mind, you were worried over nothing."

Sophia followed Kieran's gaze to the Gryffindor table, shaking her head in disappointment. She witnessed things getting worst, as Eleanor had her say on the subject, and she didn't know what to think of it all. It was a mess either way, but Sophia was sure Jacob earned that response to some degree at least.
She covered her mouth to contain her loud laughter at Kieran's suggestion for a different rumour. She couldn't even answer, shaking her head in disbelief. That was hilarious. She was almost tempted to tell him to do it, just to see the reaction. Except, Hogwarts had enough rumours going around to add to it even if it seemed like harmless enough one.
Breakfast ended and people began to leave. Sophia rose from her seat and sighed, hands on her hips as she looked around. 'I think I'm gonna go track Callie down,' she said. 'Might see you around or not.' Sophia shrugged to Kier and smiled, before rushing out of the hall in search of a fun way to spend her free morning.
Too bad her parents hadn't surrendered to her begging for her own broomstick....Yet.

Lucas eyed Nathan thoughtfully as the boy spoke. Sure, they shared a dorm and were on friendly enough terms but perhaps there was a missed opportunity not to get to know the other boy more? He found himself agreeing with everything Nathan said, and it intrigued him immensely.
'Well, I have a few rounds to make. Probably.' Lucas shrugged, trying to sound busier than he was and not at all desperate for the company. 'I suppose we could hang out, if you've got the time? I've been meaning to see what all the fuss is about with that haunted girls bathroom. I could use the backup?' Of course, it wasn't as if Lucas had any intention to investigate all on his own so he hoped Nathan was braver than him.
He stood and waited, since breakfast was over. If Nathan had other ideas though, he was open to considering them. Lucas wasn't about to head off to that bathroom without confirmation he wasn't going there alone. Maybe a girl would be a better choice, since it was a girls bathroom, but he'd sneaked around those enough times (for strictly gossip-hearing reasons, nothing else) to not be bothered by it.
Unable to resist a bit of humour, as it was a rather silly request, Lucas gave Nathan a bright grin and contained his laughter. 'Want to come search girls toilets for ghosts with me?'

Despite his distance further along the table, Jacob startled and dropped his spoon when Eleanor slammed her hands on the table. He frowned at her, though listened intently to her loud speech. She could hardly prove she wouldn't have lied, but Jacob couldn't deny some shred of reason reached him. Rumours weren't always true, but from his experience the big and bad ones typically had some truth in them at least. The hurt of hearing she'd betrayed him was too strong right now to consider an alternative.
'Me?' Jacob stuttered, startled by Eleanor's fast approach to start yelling at him. He didn't catch most of it, trying to form a reply and work out what the heck he was supposed to do. Somehow, even though he was the one to tell her they weren't friends anymore, hearing the same from her just dove the hurt deeper.
He should have listened, but Jacob still felt he'd been made a fool of. His cheeks were hot with the embarrassment of being yelled at in the middle of the Great Hall. Where was Thomas when he needed him? This wasn't fair, why was he being yelled at? He didn't do anything!
'Well, maybe you're just a good liar,' Jacob shot back. He almost regretted it, seeing she was really upset about it all. Even if she had betrayed them, she clearly felt bad about it all. He had no idea what to do or say, so just acted on his own frustration. 'Hey, this is a load of-' He halted, her words sinking in for a moment. Nah, she probably hadn't meant liked like...Right?
Eleanor cried and ran out of the hall. Jacob stared after her, not even noticing the food vanish as breakfast ended. Lots of eyes were on him, and for once - he hated it. Jacob growled, dropping onto the seat and crossed his arms on the table in anger. This was stupid. He didn't do anything! Why was he the one getting yelled at for this? Yet it really unsettled him to see her cry like that. Worst, to consider maybe he had caused it. Maybe he was wrong about all this?
Fed up, Jacob stormed from the hall and made his way outside to clear his head before he did something else he'd regret. This whole situation was really bloody unfair.
Killed by Devin Kudosen by act of the Killing Curse. June #24, RPG year 1 -- he was a 5th year Gryffindor. Jacob died to save his best friend, Luckett Langford.
