"There you are." Was how Martha decided to greet Jaxen as she dropped into the seat opposite hom.
She was starving after getting up early to study at the library and then racing to Ravenclaw Tower to catch Jaxen but she must have missed him.
But now she found him.
Martha piled her plate up with food and poured herself a drink. After a few moments to think about it, she pocketed it some fruit and nuts.
"I wanted to talk to you about my Ministry Internship. I found out some helpful stuff." She explained, keeping her voice down so no one would overhear their conversation. It helped that the Great Hall was so noisy in general.
As she waited for Jaxen to answer, Martha started to eat.

Kody was practically vibrating with excitement in his seat. Today was going to be a good day because he had Care of Magical Creatures class.
Was was one of the best classes at school! He was so excited to find out what Fairburn had in store for them.
As he grinned, like an idiot, while thinking about it, he dunked the sausages he had speared with a fork in each hand into some brown sauce.
He took a bite out of each as his eyes travelled along the table.
Spotting the bowl of apples, he juggled his sausage forks with one hand and reached to grab an apple. Apples were so important! Kody polished it on his robe and then shoved it into his bag for later.
Of those who were the happiest about trading snow for sunshine, it was the owls delivering their daily mail. With loud, cheerful screeches -- hundreds of owls swooped into the Great Hall with higher energy and enthusiasm for their task. A bit too much enthusiasm, as a rather confused Tawny went face-first into a bowl of eggs at the Ravenclaw table -- making a mess for those nearby.
Owls carried letters or packages from home, as well as today's issue of the Daily Prophet. As its news began to spread, allowing Silvana Lawrence and Harrison Kolt to rejoin their house tables with less fuss, Gryffindor table received a lot of attention. Yet many Gryffindors had already seen the headline, and adopted a general disinterest in anyone trying to get their attention to whisper about the Sagemores.
Gryffindors were more than used to this by now.
Not all the attention was curious or praising, which wasn't so easily ignored for those who shared different opinions; many older Gryffindors shot glares and warning looks at those who had nothing better to do than complain or judge the young Sagemores for their fame. Also nothing new, though less tolerated today as it threatened to spoil their fresh Spring morning.
The Twiggs family also has heads turned in their direction, particularly over at the Hufflepuff table, but it was less obvious or bothersome -- for the most part. Thankfully, unlike the Ashworths in the past, when they were mentioned in magazines, the Sagemores were protected from receiving any letters from strangers. Aunt Taraji always ensured it, no matter the headlines.
Although the distinctly broomstick-shaped packages that arrived to the Gryffindor table did stir less-favourable opinions about the Sagemores; the timing worked against them, with several jealous students whispering that they were clearly being rewarded for all their fame and attention with expensive, shiny new brooms. Yet another assumption that the Sagemore celebrities were rich and spoiled.
As a wave of mixed reactions spread around the hall, Professor Rivera (with a deadpanned expression) set aside her unread copy of the Daily Prophet, as to not investigate it today. She leaned over a fresh mug of steaming tea, ignoring Madam Pomfrey's restrained look; Rivera wasn't open to suggestions right now.
Professor Traddles, however, keenly sought the Healer's advice.

Sagemore Interview (continued): Page 7
“Attending the Gala was a bit overwhelming at first,” said Alora, before praising the opportunity.
It was an exceptional experience for the Sagemore heirs, to attend the Christmas Gala in Paris last year -- and even present a speech, on behalf of a new Sagemore Toy Drive.
“Kamari and I started this toy drive to collect and donate toys to children in orphanages,” Alora told the Daily Prophet. “We believe every child should have the chance to enjoy playing with different toys and sharing them with their friends, no matter their background.”
A goal, they believe, that everyone can help achieve. The toy drive has since doubled its reception, and is currently ranked #3 in the Gala's charitable scores. It primarily accepts toy donations, instead of Galleons; our readers can reach out to the Daily Prophet for more details, until the end of this month.
“My decision to host a toy drive came from the experiences I was allowed to have within my lifetime,” said Kamari, before discussing the Gala and their contributions. “I was and still am, hopeful and humbled by the entire process.”
During the Sagemore's arrival at the Gala, photographers and fashion enthusiasts admired the set of earrings worn by both Alora and Kamari -- since confirmed to be by a student designer.
Joshua Twiggs is the eldest son (alongside his twin, Samuel) to the Twiggs family, who made December headlines prior to the Gala, as winners of the annual Daily Prophet Grand Prize Galleon Draw. It was announced during a Fundraiser Ball held in Manchester, which the Sagemores also attended. Both showed support for orphaned or homeless children at that time.
This fuelled rumours between the two families, but Kamari Sagemore sets the record straight -- that Joshua Twiggs is just an acquaintance that she'd met a few times. She graciously shared that the status of him being a designer was not her call to make.
“He is, like most of the Twiggs family I have had the pleasure of meeting, generous and kind.” Kamari said. “I gifted the earrings to my family because they were unique and I liked them. If Twiggs decides to be a designer in the future, I wish him well. For now, I cannot speak on if that is his goal.”
It has been an honour to host Kamari Sagemore's debut interview -- the first of many to come. Both Alora and Kamari Sagemore have a bright future ahead of them, and the world is watching. Despite their extraordinary opportunities and achievements already, they presented during the interview as good kids who dream big. Truly worthy of receiving the Kindness Award.
“I am honored to have been seen and heard on behalf of children worldwide,' Kamari told the Daily Prophet. “I believe everyone can reach their goals if they try hard enough. If no one else it rooting for you, know that whomever you are, wherever you are, I am.”
(Includes a spread of three pictures featuring both Kamari and Alora -- and several well-posed shots of Kamari herself, as the main focus of the overall story.)
Thank you for your letter, and do continue to write when you have the time or wish to.
Learning to Apparate isn't easy for anyone, despite how it may seem for those with an affinity for it. Unfortunately, it's not an area of magic that any amount of study will be of much use; it really comes down to concentration, and practice. I would recommend attending each lesson you can, and just keep trying your best.
As for your request for an owl, I'm afraid that's not one I can grant at this time. As a Ward of the Ministry, it's difficult to predict the circumstances between now and graduation. A pet may cause an unpredictable issue.
However, I acknowledge your request and will discuss it with my Department. I'll inform you if the decision changes, but for now you'll have to continue using the school Owlery or a friend's owl.
I hope you are well, and that your N.E.W.T prep is also on track.
Thank you for your letter, and do continue to write when you have the time or wish to -- no matter if it's soon, frequent, or lengthy.
As you may be aware, Alan Twiggs is a colleague of mine -- he is an essential part of the Accidental Magic Reversal Squad. They have a good influence at home, but I believe your approach to this matter is missing an important question: how do you feel about Joshua and Samuel Twiggs? Or how do you feel about Reena Ashworth?
Where someone comes from; their parents, their home life, and their views... these are important, of course, but if someone is desirable company or not really comes down to how you feel about them. If their actions and words are likeable, considerate, and something that you enjoy.
I can confirm, from what I know of their families, that their company is not someone I would discourage or caution against. So if you would like to get to know them more, or if you'd rather avoid them, that is entirely up to you and how you feel about them individually. Making friends isn't always an easy task, but if you're at least curious about them then that's a good first step.
Perhaps try to find some things you have in common? Such as interests or favourite classes. While also keeping an open mind about things you might not have in common; it's an opportunity to broaden your perspective. But above all else, the most important thing really is just if you enjoy their company or not. Once you figure that out, the rest should make more sense.
William, I must say, I am very proud of you for continuing to venture outside your comfort zone -- such as with the gardening, and the writing. As to encourage you, I've sent a book that might be of interest. You're doing really well, and I hope to hear more of your growing adventures or hobbies. It's okay if some don't work out, just keep trying.
I hope you are well, and that your O.W.L prep is also on track.
From: Dae-Hyun Tolliver
Included was a new book with a rather bright cover: A Whimsical Guide to Creative Writing.
The language was less strict and wordy than he was used to from textbooks or tutor-provided study materials. Its pace and tone were also unfamiliar to him, as though there was a purpose to the book other than to provide information and guidance. Was the author trying to entertain and inspire him as well?
Accompanying it was a notebook filled with blank parchment, as it might be easier to use if he wished to follow some activities or try some writing prompts from the book.
I'm happy to receive your owl! I hope things are going good at Hogwarts. You can write anytime, I promise I don't mind. Reading a letter from you or Elizabeth immediately brightens my day.
You don't need to thank me for the Christmas gift; I'm just happy you liked them.
It warms my heart to know you're giving gardening a try. I've many fond memories of you and Elizabeth helping out on the grounds now and again. Remember those mystery roses we planted a few summers ago? They're twice their predicted size now! Their beautiful orange and pink petals almost make up for the occasional swing of a thorny vine.
Magical seeds are quite durable. I'd say, if they were stored properly and aren't more than a few years old, they should fare well with the right cultivation and care.
A piece of advice I'd give about gardening is to be attentive to your plant's condition. Like people, they've a range of preferences and needs. Some need a lot of care or attention, and others might wilt if you're overly attentive. But also, don't set too big expectations; watch them grow and flourish on their own -- it's about the process, more than the outcome.
If you care for and harvest a few more plants in the Hogwarts Greenhouses, let me know. I have some rare seeds you might like to give a try -- when you're ready, and if it's something you're interested in growing.
Keep it up, William! Maybe we could plant something together again this Summer? If there's anything specific you'd like to grow, I'm sure I could get my hands on it for us to try at home.
I have to answer this one on my own, as your father is busy agonizing over Pierce's letter. Apparently, there's been another incident in your brother's attempts to make friends.
Something that you're not having trouble with, I see? The name Caleb Bradley doesn't ring any bells, I'm afraid. Your dad hasn't heard anything, either -- apart from a tragic incident a few years back that nearly wiped out an entire family, but that was probably a different Bradley.
This Caleb sounds like a nice boy. We hope to hear more.
As for the Ashworth family, oh yes. Quite infamous, those lot. Such a sad story there, too. I'm glad that you've made friends with Jaxen, and I do recall a few mentions of him. The fact that we have yet to meet many of your friends is overdue, wouldn't you say? It's wonderful that you're making so many friends -- hold onto those worth keeping, and you could cherish those bonds for life.
Are any of those you've mentioned interested in going to the Quidditch World Cup? (Please don't mention this to Tobias, as to not get his hopes up, but plans are soon back underway to host it the coming Summer). It might be an opportunity for us to meet them! Of course, we've no doubt of seeing Sophia there, as always. How is she doing?
Your dad heard all about your internship. He hoped things were okay for you, given the busy day and something relating to an incident in the lobby? We're very proud of you for taking part in this program, and it must have been quite the fuss to meet Hyo Kahn, of all people. What an opportunity! To have his name on your career file is going to help set you apart, for sure.
To help celebrate your hard work (all of you), I've made an extra chocolatey batch of fudge. Please share it with your siblings.
We love you, Martha. And keep studying hard; N.E.W.T exams are not to be taken lightly. Hopefully, your brothers are preparing well for their O.W.Ls too. We're proud of you, our Prefect and only daughter. Do keep us updated, as we love to hear from you.
P.SKeep an eye on Joshua, won't you? He was in the Daily Prophet this morning, and might be feeling rather overwhelmed by the attention. I didn't want to add to it by writing to him today, but hopefully he keeps a level head and has his friends close. Check on your brother for us, when you can?
From: Mum
Included was a container filled with homemade chocolate fudge, wrapped in a yellow and blue cloth. It wasn't too sweet, considering all the extra chocolate, but came in plentiful squares-- perfect not only for sharing among her many siblings, but some friends as well.
It was one of Molly's best batches; a lot of love and care had gone into it.
Do you remember when you were seven, and we discovered an odd variety of Trumpeting Toadstool across the creek at home? I conjured us a temporary bridge across, so we could watch it grow. You keenly took notes, and everyone did such a good job in not disturbing it (mainly because Tobias was supervised at all times).
After 40 days of watching and waiting, and of protecting it from weather or pests -- it finally changed colour and started responding to sound. I wouldn't be surprised if you still have your notes on this somewhere, as it was quite a delightful little discovery we all studied together.
I'm sure it played a part in why you're so diligent with your notes now, but it was wonderful to see you that attentive and eager to learn everything about it. During your note-taking, you came to understand many of its patterns, and tried all sorts of sounds to see which it responded to.
You created a long list of what worked and what didn't; of the Trumpeting Toadstool's preferences, dislikes, tunes, and basically everything -- over the course of months, especially as it only had a year to trumpet or it would die.
What does this have to do with Kody Ashworth, you may wonder? Think about it, Pierce. You studied and covered every imaginable option, creating a truly impressive list. Once complete, nothing changed. You went above and beyond. And yet, we determined that perhaps the Trumpeting Toadstool was just a bit too odd a variety, as it was yet to actually trumpet. A whole range of sounds, but no trumpeting.
Then I brought Samuel to work with me, right as Spring started like it has today. While there, he heard an old man in an elevator whistling a strange tune. Samuel liked it so much, he kept repeating it; drove half our house mad for weeks.
And after that, he came running into the house saying that the Toadstool trumpeted at him when he whistled the tune. You kids fought over this for weeks. During which you tried to explain, until you were blue in the face, that it didn't work that way; that what he said didn't fit the list. That you had tried whistling, and you got a stinky puff in your face. Gosh, I remember that took your mother two hours, and giving you five baths, to remove.
Pierce, sometimes you can account for everything and still be surprised. There are some things that are so precious and mysterious in life that they wait for the right time, regardless of any list.
As Samuel proved, when he dragged you out across the bridge at the crack of drawn -- both of you getting your pyjamas muddy from the recent rain. He whistled that strange tune, and the Trumpeting Toadstool trumpeted with all that it had. A beautifully strange sound that never made your list.
Making friends is like a Trumpeting Toadstool. Some patterns are obvious and easily referenced, like from a list of someone who knows what they're doing, but sometimes there's a surprise or a really obscure and rare moment not everyone is blessed to experience. I'm sure you remember, but each Trumpeting Toadstool has a slightly different tune; people are like that too.
My point is that you can't rely solely on lists when it comes to matters of the heart. There's bound to be discrepancies. Don't miss out on someone's beautifully unique tune, meant specially for you, just because it doesn't follow a pattern you anticipated. A friend is someone you enjoy being around, talking to, and sharing ideas with. How to be a good friend, that may benefit from a list -- with that person's input, but making a friend is as simple as the right whistle.
Had Samuel never discovered that whistle by accident, you'd never have known the potential of even an odd variety of a Trumpeting Toadstool -- as you know, if it doesn't trumpet before exactly one year since it sprouted, it wilts. Don't let a potential friendship wilt as well. I think, perhaps, you owe Kody Ashworth an explanation -- or an apology?
Please let us know how it goes. Good luck!
From: Dad
It arrived with a box containing several new ink bottles, and a few thick notebooks. Nothing second-hand, as these sort of things had to be bought new, but neither were they the usual (far cheaper) brands he had grown up with.
Unfortunately, they were the sort of quality that once one tried it, they'd realise how much more efficient and preferable they were. These were the kind of supplies that his ordinary (non-rich) classmates got. Pierce was about to learn what he'd been missing out on, and how much nicer it was to be at the same level at mostly everyone else.
Our trip was an interesting one, to say the least. We're back home now, briefly. We'll be headed to Italy soon -- a friend of mine has had quite an accident, and needs someone to help manage her little pottery shop for a few weeks. Grandpa is excited to try pottery while we're there, and I haven't the heart to tell him not to get his hopes up.
Congratulations to both you and Jaxen for the Duelling Tournament! I always knew us Ashworths were strong fighters, and you kids are no exception. I'd lost track of how many times I had to separate your dad and uncle as teenagers, as they learned a new duelling spell or another and thought our backyard could handle it.
It's a smart idea, the Internship. Take as many of those as you can; you'll need to work hard for the Application to get into the Academy. The Research Healer we spoke to on our trip gave us some insight into the Program you need to be approved of, and Merlin it is not going to be easy. But you're bright and dedicated, so we wish you all the best in achieving your goals.
We'd intended to talk more about the Research Healer and what we learned, when we see you in person. Unfortunately, we're uncertain if that will be before the summer. So what I can say is that a Research Healer is a very powerful position, and requires an absolute understanding of the interaction between magical properties -- similar to Curse-Breakers, in that respect.
The Program is mysterious and top secret. I suggest you see what's on offer during Career's Day, but I suspect you'll be given more specific preparation materials in N.E.W.T year.
But as a Research Healer can conduct their own projects -- you should also broaden your activities, to include some safe yet practical ways of discovering new things. About people, magic, or even the castle itself. Investigation or obtaining knowledge will be a key part of your job.
Reena, you've chosen a very prestigious and difficult path ahead. We're sure you can raise to meet it, but you need to be more intentional in your studies and time now. Surround yourself with people who foster similar determination and knowledge. Perhaps even try to find someone your age or older who is also walking this path, if possible.
If you really intend to become a Research Healer, I'm sorry to say that it must become your life now. In some way or another, everything you do must point towards it.
I wish I could write more, but I must be packing for Italy. We love you.
I'm glad you found my advice useful, and that things went well on your Internship. Those experiences are invaluable.
The patient you mentioned, yes -- I am familiar with her. Never assume that age makes someone harmless, however. In her case, perhaps that may be true but exercise caution. That's all I can say over a letter. You don't need to worry, just don't let your guard down based on appearances.
Things aren't always as they may appear.
Yes, I was aware of your mother's visits. Not of what they detailed, however. I find it interesting that she told him to expect you. Without giving too much away, what exactly did he say or imply?
He would know of the condition though, yes. He has treated you kids in the past, mostly the boys. My memory there is a bit fuzzy, sorry.
But I am amazed that you met Curse-Breaker Hyo Kahn. He remains of interest to me, but Reena please don't contact him on my behalf. For one, that's not how it works with a Kahn -- and it's not a chance you want to get wrong. Secondly... it is quite hard to explain. It simply can't be done via owl.
Let me worry about that, but it's good to know he's active again.
As for Jaxen and cursing him during duels... I mean, I'd hope you're only using curses permitted at Hogwarts and certified for offensive duel practice (against your brother, I mean) -- in which case, don't worry too much about using them during casual duels. His condition does not react that way to standard combat magic.
While many consider all curses to be Dark Arts, and yes in a way I suppose they fit that category -- technically, it would only be the true Dark Arts that may harm him. So no, he can handle normal curses. In fact, it may even be beneficial to build a tolerance
With all that out of the way -- how are you doing, Reena? I'm glad Winter is over now, though make sure you don't get caught outside in the rain too often. O.W.L year requires absolute focus, especially with your choice of career, but eating well and getting plenty of sleep are just as important.
I heard about the visit from the Minister of Education. Have you kids signed up for any clubs? It's mandatory for you this year, isn't it? Which did you pick? Do I also have the gift of seeing you dressed in a costume and singing carols in Hogsmeade? Ha ha.
I'm doing okay, I suppose. Just missing my family. The house was too quiet, so I'm writing to you from this beautiful little Hamlet in the countryside. I'll be here one more day, then on the move again. But don't worry, your owls will always find me no matter where I go.
I heard you got into a fight at school, with a Hufflepuff from Reena's class? A fight, Jaxen? That's not like you.
Care to explain what happened, especially after all our talk about being careful? I expected you to know better by now, with your condition. Was this a boy thing? Was this fight related to Reena in some way, since he's in her class?
I expect you to write to me before the end of day, with an explanation as to what happened. I want to hear your side of the story, and why you took such a risk. Are you okay? I understand things have been rough for you lately, Jaxen, but getting into fights? That only makes things worst. Trust me, I know.
You can ask Filch. I'm sure he still has the receipts. This is a joke, please don't
As a N.E.W.T student, getting into fights can have even bigger consequences as well -- especially for a future Auror. You do not want to risk this going on record. I want to understand what happened, but I also hope you've learned your lesson from this and won't do it again (with your fists or your wand).
I personally heard all about the Minister for Education's visit. He mentioned your class was one he sat in on during his visit, and that it was an interesting experience. I'm glad to hear that.
He gave your aunt a full rundown of the clubs; it's beneficial for us to know what kind of interests and trends students have these days. But we cannot choose a club for you, my child. Just choose wisely, as it is a form of commitment that you're expected to honour on top of your studies and other activities.
I can only recommend picking something you would enjoy.
Despite your good intentions, we won't be sending any magical toys for you to share with your classmates. This is a slippery slope, Alora. While I'm sure this MJ would enjoy the experience, it is not up to you to teach her. There are many ways you can show her the delights of magical toys, without the risk of being taken advantage of or raising expectations in others -- that they can make such requests from you.
You must be careful about these things. What if word got out that if someone approached you with a similar story or nice manner, you'd be able to grant them such benefits? I know your intention was just to share magical toys with a classmate who has yet to experience them, but think of the bigger picture.
You are special, my child. The resources you have are also special. Boundaries are important for this very reason, and you must not accidentally set yourself a trap later down the road. If this MJ is a potential friend, of which we'd like to hear more about her, then instead there are other ways to share magical toys with her.
Like over the summer, in a safe and more private setting. Or by taking her to one of our toy expos, which I'm sure she'd love too.
We don't know this MJ, but just from reading your letter and the fact her friend is also interested in this topic, it does sound as though you may be taken advantage of. Not necessarily by them, but try to remember that while we make toys for all to enjoy -- we must also safeguard our products, our business, and ourselves.
As for the friend of MJ's who is interested in making toys, I see no reason to avoid him. As you know, we do not shy away from competitors. But obviously, as I mentioned about safeguarding -- keep your conversations to general topics, and nothing specifically Sagemore. If he is simply curious, there's no harm in making a friend there.
If he seems too keen for specifics, then you may need to rethink the situation. Of course, you're welcome to also mention our toy expos to him -- and that we do, at times, offer opportunities or workshops for those interested in making their own magical toys.
We sincerely hope you find classmates with the potential to become your friends. If anyone catches your interest, please inform us. Your safety is our utmost concern. Not everyone has good intentions, and sometimes even an innocent moment too hastily jumped into might bite you back.
It can be exciting to talk to people about things you specialise in, but I advise you to first get to know them more. Understand their intentions, and take the time to determine if they can be trusted. But even among friends, our business must be safeguarded. Always remember that.
We hope you enjoy your new broomstick. Good luck for your first match!
From: Papa
Included, as if the shape hadn't already given it away, was a brand new Icebolt broomstick. Several students nearby gave her urging looks to reveal it under its colourful wrapping, and passerby's gasped in awe -- or jealously, when noticing it.
We hope you enjoy your new broomstick, and your Papa said to wish you good luck in your first match.
Also, well done for your debut interview. Your Mama has saved a copy of it as though it's a piece of art. But we are very proud of you. Keep in mind though that making a full-page spread of the interview is highly unusual, and likely only because it was your debut -- as well as the debut of a freshly-funded department of the Daily Prophet.
In future, your answers need to be much more concise and quotable, with a small article space allowance in mind. But this was a good debut, and you handled it well. From now on, we begin filtering potential interview requests -- with your official debut to the public, you are now in the spotlight.
This is the moment you are no longer just the child of a Sagemore, but the heir to a world-famous company. Maintaining your boundaries, while also being aware of public opinions, is crucial. Always tell us if anything happens, no matter how small. We're in this together.
From: Aunt Taraji
Included, as if the shape hadn't already given it away, was a brand new Moonclaw broomstick. Several students nearby gave her urging looks to reveal it under its colourful wrapping, and passerby's gasped in awe -- or jealously, when noticing it.
Though Alora's broomstick, being a fancier model, certainly earned more looks and whispers. But it balanced out with the fact that Kamari's face was still all over the front page of the Daily Prophet. There wasn't a single moment of peace for her during Breakfast today, since the owls arrived. It was likely to continue throughout the day, until students gradually lost interest.
Are there any Twiggs kids in your class? Just curious. Briefly met one at the Ministry for Magic the other day. Internship.
Is Hogwarts nice in the Spring? It's still Winter in South Korea. How are your classes going? Some big decisions coming up soon, right?
A target last month cast a spell I won't go into details of, but the ashes the spell left behind had a cool effect. Uncle Hyo has thoroughly checked it for any harm. I just thought you might like to see it, which you can keep.
Write to me sometimes, won't you? Or to Dakho, at least. It's too quiet at home.
From: Appa Hwan
The letter was written in Hangul (Korean). Included was a small jar of black ashes that, when shaken, turned a vivid violet to rival any paints or spells. Magically, it could not be opened or damaged by any means.
I am sure there will be opportunities to join the Archery Club when you're ready. There's always next year, but don't be complacent; try to get in as soon as possible.
Keep this between us (our family), but I was asked to stop by the first Archery club meeting on Valentine's Day. As I'll be at Hogwarts, we could meet up afterwards if you have some time?
We're not sure about anyone having a pet. If you did, it would have to be something small and low maintenance, but I'm going to say no to any pets for now. If we have to move suddenly, they become a liability and a risk. Our situation may cause them harm.
If you're not sure what you want, I say that lacks a certain desire for a pet and the long-term responsibilities of caring for it. This is something we may revisit later, but for now it's a firm no. You're only a 2nd year, and next school term you'll be able to interact with more beasts overall (have they told you that yet?).
I realise that's not the same, but it has to be enough for now.
Tell me more about this friend you've made? Alora Sagemore is a name I recognise well. I have met Taraji Sagemore a few times, and their family has a lot of potential. Both heirs are in Gryffindor house, right? It's an interesting development. Keep me informed.
If / when you are seriously considering Alora as a potential or active friend, I'll reach out to her family and we'll go from there. Keep your guard up, as the Sagemores are very much in the public eye -- especially now. Watch a friend's back, but also present your best self and reflect on this experience.
Well done on working to improve your Potion-Brewing. And Dakho sends his love, as always. He also wanted to send you an entire Persimmon (Gam) tree, but we convinced him to spare the poor owl.
From: Appa Hyo
The letter was written in Hangul (Korean). The bottom was "stamped" with bright blue paint; Dakho's handprint contribution.
Class threads are now available.

Pierce’s reading was interrupted by the screeching of owls. As he was fully aware of how disastrous landings of owls could be, he quickly secured his precious book and awaited an owl to arrive. And two did. They gracefully landed in front of him, one with a copy of the Daily Prophet, one with a package and a letter.
Pierce took everything and expected the owls to take their leave, but they just sat there as if awaiting something from him. He raised a brow at them, then sighed, picking up two small pieces of ham and offered them to each. Pleased with the treat, both owls nibbled them away before flying back the way they came from.
Normally, Pierce would have started with the letter and package from his family first, but the picture on the front page of the Prophet caught his attention as the face on it was familiar to him. Kamari Sagemore. Having piqued his curiosity, Pierce began to read the paper. According to it, the Sagemore girls had started a toy drive over Christmas. Only know Pierce got why they had been called out yesterday during breakfast.
Well, being often on the receiving end on having money troubles, Pierce welcomed the action. While he normally would say toys weren’t as educational as necessary, in Sagemore’s case, it was different. He didn’t know too much, but he did know they often designed toys with a purpose, ones that encouraged learning and development. For a brief moment he tried to remember if they ever had received toys from them, though he guessed he preferred books over toys anyway.
His gaze came to a hold when he read his brother’s name in the paper. Again. Hopefully, by now, Joshua had made a decision for his path forward, and let them all know.
Flipping through the pages of the Prophet, Pierce skimmed over the article about new educational policies as they could have an impact on their student life, then put the paper aside to sneak a peek into the package. To his delight, a bunch of new ink bottles and notebooks were stored inside – and with one glance it was clear to him that those weren’t the usual sort he got from his parents, though he knew them from classmates.
His eyes went wide, and Pierce immediately knew he would treasure them, though also itched to test them. But why had he suddenly gotten those, and not the usual? Maybe his Dad had written something about it in the letter. However, already after the first paragraph, a deep frown appeared on Pierce’s face.
Of course, he remembered! He had taken notes for months, tested everything out in every possible way, getting stinky puff in his face, only for Samuel to come around and solve it by chance. Pierce still was kind of hung up about it, though mostly because he himself hadn’t been able to solve it, despite all his effort. In addition, the whole incident had left him with a mix of amazement and annoyance, as he had to accept that there wouldn’t be always something which could be explained or had a pattern, despite in his personal opinion, Pierce really wished for it.
It just made life so much easier! That was also why he loved rules and lists. It all brought order and structure into life – but apparently, nature didn’t always like to have such ways. A fact Pierce found intriguing and utterly frustrating at the same time. How could one then predict actions or occurrences? One sometimes had to leave it up to fate... Not something Pierce particularly liked. He wanted to shape his own future.
He wanted to account for everything, though according to his Da he would never be truly able to. There would be always something no one could predict, not even with Divination.
While reading with a frown, it took Pierce a moment to truly understand why his Dad even wrote about the story or mentioned Kody: because Pierce had mentioned him in his sidenote, and his friendship checklist. And according to his Dad, the list... couldn’t fully capture what a friend really was. Or how to recognise one.
Similar to how the odd variety of a Trumpeting Toadstool had shown it liked a unique tune, apparently friends could be found outside of a pattern.
But... how should Pierce then find someone? How should he then determine if someone was a friend or had friend potential if he couldn’t go along a list? The thought made him feel uncomfortable.
As if his Dad had predicted his trail of thoughts, the next sentence provided Pierce with at least a start: ‘a friend is someone you enjoy being around, talking to, and sharing ideas with’. Mhm. If he now applied it to Kody... it fit. Completely. He liked visiting the Nifflers together with Kody, and he enjoyed their conversations. It was easy to talk to the Gryffindor, he even listened to everything Pierce explained about things, and Kody provided him with his own knowledge in turn.
Pierce blinked before his eyes widened in surprise upon the realisation. So... Kody could in fact be a friend? But how could Pierce truly know? He frowned again at his Dad’s words in the next sentence. Making friends was as simple as the right whistle? Then it wasn’t simple at all! It had taken forever to find it – and a lucky encounter. But Pierce didn’t want to rely on luck here...
But there was one action he could take, one his Dad even proposed to him: talking to Kody about it. Pierce remembered the Gryffindor’s words, and according to those, something had made Kody think they were friends, while Pierce didn’t have a clue. So, he would ask. And hopefully, he would get an answer.
However, Pierce still had no good clue about how to really make friends or be one. Although... according to his Dad, he maybe could make a list regarding the latter one... It seemed as if more research was due. Or adding this to the list of what to ask Kody.
Pierce pulled out his agenda of today, and quickly added ‘Talking to Kody about friends’ to it, though had no idea yet where to put it timewise. He would have to ask Kody, and hope the Gryffindor had indeed time. Best course of action would be to ask him before classes would start. How, Pierce had no idea yet, but he would think about it on his way there.
Having finished his meal, Pierce packed away the Prophet, package and letter and headed out with purpose in his mind.

Ryan had been up early.
Now equipped with a purpose, and having finally felt comfortable at Hogwarts even when going around on his own, Ryan had discovered that he's a bit of a morning person. Not effortlessly, but he enjoyed seeing the sunrise and how quiet the castle was before the rest of the school got up. So long as it wasn't completely dark, of course.
He'd tried to wake Joe at first, but got no response. Shrugging, he'd quickly changed his clothes and headed to the Common Room -- then rushed back to the bathroom to brush his teeth, and fix his tie. He'd religiously studied a book on how to tie ties, and now considered himself a bit of an expert.
Knowing exactly what classes he had today (and not looking forward to either of them), Ryan had packed his bag and headed out of the Common Room for his morning exercise. That was, simply making his way down the damned steps of the damned tower. Did wizards not know anything about elevators by now? Or maybe he should learn a spell to turn steps into a slide...
Shaking distractions from his mind, Ryan set out to explore his usual route to the Entrance Hall and Great Hall. He'd gotten up a little before breakfast started, but that was his plan. Adjusting the straps of his bag, Ryan set out on a mission to find people who'd want to duel him later.
After a while, he made his way to the Great Hall to join the rest of the school for breakfast -- now feeling starved, but content. Easily spotting his weird-haired friends at the Ravenclaw table, and in their usual spot, Ryan hurried over and squeezed his way onto the seat between them.
'Morning... what happened to you?' Ryan peered close to both their faces in turn, wondering why they looked like zombies today. Was that a thing? He hoped not! 'It's been morning for ages. Wake up, we have classes soon.'
He clapped his hands, startling himself at the sound, then silently judged their choices of breakfast. Ryan's energy remained high, and he rather liked it. 2nd year was a million times better than 1st year, and he was starting to already look forward to 3rd year too.
Too bad today had some of his least favourite lessons, all together too. Why couldn't he have a bad one, then a nice one as a reward? At least it wasn't Potions -- he shuddered at the thought.
'What are your plans for today?' Ryan asked, while wincing as he accidentally rubbed the fresh bruise forming above his eyebrow. His hair was a bit of a mess too, but he didn't care. 'I have my whole day planned out. Exams are coming up soon too, you know. You've been studying, right?'
He shot Toby a particularly curious look, as he was able to personally remind Joe in their Common Room or Dormitory not to slack on any homework tasks or leave his notes messy.
Just as Ryan pondered if it would be useful information for them to know exactly how many steps there were to the dreadfully tall Ravenclaw Tower, owl post arrived. Ryan winced as the owls swooped and dropped packages or letters, as if he considered them bombs in disguise.
It was always chaotic at this time of breakfast, and his least favourite part of the morning. Ryan managed to locate his copy of the Daily Prophet, and frowned as he recognised the name on the front. Leaning intently to read through the main article, and the continued one on page seven, Ryan paused in reading anything else to go over it in his mind.
Not the contents, which frankly didn't mean anything or make much sense to him. Something about toys for orphans, and being kind. That was nice, but...
'Are they allowed to write about kids like this?' Ryan asked Joe and Toby, a bit quietly. 'They're talking about Alora, right? I suppose, if she answered their questions then they must have had permission. But it's weird when it's about someone we know, isn't it?'
He peered curiously to the Gryffindor table, shuddering at all the attention being directed there now. He was suddenly glad to be a nobody; being famous looked awful and suffocating. But he didn't really know Alora personally, so Ryan didn't know how he felt about it all or if he cared enough to check on her or something.
Nah, it wasn't any of his business. And she was a bit scary sometimes. It just felt wrong, having everyone talk about one of his classmates just because she went to some fancy party or whatever. He assumed Kamari was her sister, or something? Sighing, Ryan turned his attention to the other articles -- first carefully reading over the education policies and pretended they weren't boring.
'More dragon sightings.' He poked Joe. 'And look, they wrote an article for you.'
He poked Toby, giving his friend a cheeky grin as he pointed to the Spring Cleaning article. Though, it wouldn't hurt to have Joe read it as well. Ryan had tripped over his things last night, and nearly said his first curse word.

Post by Amara Seabrook on Nov 14, 2024 22:58:38 GMT 10
Amara squinted at Reena's answers, not buying it as the full story. It didn't seem she was being lied to, though. Did Reena even know the answers? No, she was far too pink for there to be nothing going on with Taesang Lee to some degree.
She sighed when Vicky started talking away about it. Amara had deterred her from gushing about Taesang himself, but of course that didn't limit Vicky's topic options. And talk, she did. Hence the sigh. Amara was tired in a way that had nothing to do with the bright new morning.
No longer the wild Amara Seabrook that she had been for the past five years, now matured and finally able to heal after the summer she'd freed herself from her father -- Amara simply focused on finishing her breakfast, though listened to the conversation. It was no wonder Vicky wanted to be a reporter, though Amara played to anyone who listened that Vicky didn't choose the gossip column when she achieved her dream.
Setting aside her bowl, Amara sighed again -- casting Vicky a look to shush for a moment.
'Just hanging out isn't that great, either,' she pointed out. 'He's so popular, it would be foolish to treat even that so casually. Also, no-strings-attached is not everyone's style.'
Amara hoped to simmer down Vicky's enthusiasm, while also appreciating that those proving questions had been asked. She told Vicky to shush and stop with the boy nonsense all the time, but that didn't mean she was as dismissive of Vicky's words or perspective as it may appear by the time Amara had enough of hearing it.
'Also, of course I've heard things too.' She frowned at Vicky so much of implying that Amara was less-informed in any regard. She glanced back at Reena. 'He's not a bad option. I'm merely curious, all right? If something happens with him, it'll be the talk of the school.'
She hoped Reena at least realised that. But Amara was not about to discredit her, as they had chosen Reena for a reason, after all. Amara was confident that Reena was not one to overlook something like that.
'If you're embarrassed to tell others, fine, that's your thing to work out.' Amara shrugged. 'But be honest with us, yes? We're the ones who'd have your back, if anyone starts something. Spare me the details, just yes or no. Do you know like? Are the rumours true?'
Giving Reena a moment to consider her response, Amara glanced at the arriving owls with annoyance. She held no expectation for any mail, so reached for the Daily Prophet to at least pass some time before class. She wasn't in any rush to get to Transfiguration despite generally enjoying the subject.
Seeing the front page of the Daily Prophet, Amara immediately pulled a face and discarded it -- deeming it unworthy of her time today. That's what they considered news, these days? The sooner Vicky worked there, the better.

'Nah, textbooks ain't my type,' Sophia said, frowning at the food on her plate. 'Leave the posters to Silvana. Also those efforts are kind of lazy, don't you think? Posters, hoping someone saw me? Get your butt to the library yourself and rescue me, ya dunce.'
Despite this, she had to cover her mouth to contain some of her laughter at Lucky's description, especially about approaching with food and caution. And making sure she wasn't liable for book-throwing. Lucky was hilarious. Sophia was almost confused why no one else was laughing this hard. Maybe they were being polite and not eavesdropping?
'Martha brought me snacks,' Sophia added, in case Lucky was that concerned. 'She loves me proactively.'
Ugh, now she knew words like proactively. Studying was the worst.
She eyed her pile of food again, which seemed to have grown on its own while they were talking. Pulling a face at the sausages, which were definitely not to her taste, Sophia flicked her fork at them -- gradually (with no regard for food hygiene) rolling them off her plate, and over onto Lucky's.
Impressing even herself, Sophia withheld any sausage humour jokes. It felt too embarrassing this time, for whatever reason. Her gaze lingering on Lucky's hair a moment, Sophia quickly grabbed her goblet -- almost spilling it, just as Lucky had moments earlier.
'Something's wrong with this one.' Sophia hid her clumsiness by examining the goblet, as though it was to blame. 'Faulty, somehow. If I end up soaked in pumpkin juice, I'm blaming you.'
She poked her fork mock-threateningly at Lucky, then took a sip to drain the goblet halfway. For safety reasons.
Sophia's mouth hung open at Lucky's question if she was going to eat all that food.
'Are you kidding me?' She lifted the heavy plate, acting as though it was the weight of several Bludgers. 'Not even a starved king could eat all of this. I'd have to crawl to class. Also stop talking about books, ugh I hate theeeem.'
Sophia whined, kicking her feet a little.
Huffing, she speared some bacon and stuffed it into her mouth. She intended to sulk as long as possible, but the arrival of their daily mail distracted her enough to forget about it. Still taking bites of food in between everything, as apparently she had a ton of food to consume, Sophia tried to blindly reach for the Daily Prophet across the table without slowing down.
Under the table, she kicked at Lucky's ankles -- trying to urge him to his use longer limbs to retrieve the newspaper for her. Eyebrows raised as the hall became more chatty, with looks turned towards both Gryffindor and Hufflepuff tables, Sophia kicked harder with more urgency.
'Is it anything good?' She wondered, through a bite of eggs. 'Don't tell me if it's boring. Or about stupid books and studying. Is it too much to ask for a more Quidditch focus? Lucky, gimme.'
Sophia bit more bacon, leaning against him as she still tried to reach for the newspaper -- without too much effort, as he had much better reach than her. She tried to ignore how warm he felt beside her, in their proximity. Well, it was Spring, right? It was warmer now, so.
Why her ears felt warm too was just weird. She ignored that as well, trying to use her fork to cut into her pancakes while still chewing eggs.

Joshua was glad he wasn’t looking at Amber as she reacted to his message from Zack Mercer with the utmost delight and excitement in her voice. No need to look at her face and have her expression twist the proverbial knife in his heart.
The explanation did not make him feel any better. Not really. Instead he wondered what else they got up to in that Prefect Room.
No. He shouldn't be bitter.
Of course Amber would like someone as impressive as Mercer. And it was about time someone like that recognised the brilliance that was his best friend.
He was glad he locked eyes with William when he did. Doren even started a little wave, though then stopped to tap his hat.
Joshua's mouth formed an 'O' as he watched Doren's hat melt upwards. That was so cool!
Those girls did not appreciate genius when it was staring them in the face. He shook his head disapprovingly at their departure, then gave William a bright smile and another thumbs up.
It was a little silly, wearing the hats, but also so much fun! And they had had fun making them -- or at least Joshua did.
Owl post arrived with a flurry of feathers and Joshua out of habit lifted his plate out of the way just in time before the owl bringing his prophet landed in his breakfast.
He fed it a piece of bacon before it fluttered off again and he glanced at the cover story -- only to get a little pale when he caught sight of his own name in it.
Kamari Sagemore was waving very friendly at him however and he opened page seven to read about her interview.
He smiled as he read it. Kamari was such a kind girl, he was glad he had sold her earrings. It was also very tactful of her to set the record straight as she did.
Joshua's smile lasted about as long as it took for the first random background character student to ask if he was going to be a designer then. For a moment he feared he might get overwhelmed again -- but then he decided against it.
Joshua quickly folded his newspaper back together and gave them a knowing smile. "Wait and see." He winked at them as he packed the paper into his bag.
"Meet me outside?" he asked Amber and Caine, letting them know he'd like to walk to class together.
As he got up, he turned towards the Gryffindor table, eyes searching the faces of the students there. Not for Kamari -- as that would only attract the unwanted kind of attention, especially now as she had just disregarded the rumours.
Ah! There he was.
"Hey Kody," Joshua gave the boy a friendly grin as he set his bag down next to him. "I got a question -- Keeper to Keeper."
Then he leaned in to remind Kody of the offer he'd made at the Flying Course before Christmas and they settled on a time and place to meet up at after their morning classes.
"Good talk. See ya!" Joshua chuckled as he left the Gryffindor table in good spirits.
Now, to find his friends and get to Care of Magical Creatures.
[Ooc: Kody Ashworth mentioned with permission -- and Exit]

”Morning!” chirpy as ever, Caine greeted Oscar with a bright grin and a wave before turning his attention back to Joshua and stuffing his face between words.
It wasn’t the most refined way to eat, sure, but he wasn’t one to focus too much on all that. Right now he was good to just… partake in what was delicious - both idle chat and food.
When Josh straight out asked Amber about Mercer he nearly choked on some toast. Blue eyes widened slightly as he glanced between the two like a gossip fiend. First one friend, then the other. Back and forth.
He felt oddly in the middle. Kind of familiar, that feeling. He didn’t much like it.
About the only bright part of this whole interaction was the agreement to play Gobstones.
”Dad promised me a broom upgrade if I do well.” he muttered, glancing over at the Gryffindor table with a furrowed brow. He had the Thunderstrike, yes, but he’d been made a promise and… well… his dad was good at coming through on those if he did his part.
Fiddling with the toast and feeling far too awkward, Caine shot Amber a curious glance. He’d shown her the Prefect Room? No way!
Those were details he was going to need and stat. Sounded like Amber Lloyd was holding out on him for the gossip! Rude of her, really.
He opened his mouth to say something but the flurry of owls stomped it out of him. There were wings and feathers and letters flying. He huffed, stuffing the rest of his toast into his mouth before reaching out to take hold of the Daily Prophet and read what its pages had to offer.
Hm.
New Educational Policies. Weird Sisters (oh, that was exciting! He wanted to read that!), Dragons, Cleaning (ew…) but then, right there on the front, was Sagemore.
Ugh.
He’d seen first hand the damage that could come. Poor Josh had been overwhelmed with the whole earring thing and now he was mentioned again.
Without turning his head from the paper, Caine glanced at his friend to see how he was taking it. But… he didn’t seem overly bothered.
Following Joshua’s lead he folded his paper in half so he could read about the weird sisters later and tucked it safely away in his bag.
Joshua had said something about needing his help later so he figured he’d be on that. Not that he minded. Nah, Josh was his best friend.
His friend stood and said to meet him outside and Caine nodded once, gathering his own stuff just to make sure it was good to go. Yeah, yeah he could do this.
”Want to walk with?” he asked Amber, offering his arm out for her to take. ”We can wait together?”

"Mornin'," he mumbled as Toby slid into the seat beside him. His best friend looked about as tired as he felt.
There was a strange comfort in that. Joe leaned his head against Toby's shoulder, for a moment sinking into the one armed hug. He shook his head no, though none of his friends ever really needed permission to have some of his food -- especially food he didn't actually want to eat.
Joe gave a tired "Hmm" noise to the comment about their first class, wondering if Professor Archerose would be terribly offended if Joe fell asleep in his class.
He did not have much time to think about it however, as Ryan soon squeezed in between him and Toby.
Joe stared at Ryan for a moment, blinking, as he was trying to register what he'd said.
Then he startled at the clap.
Where'd he get that energy from?
"It can be morning forever for all I care," he muttered groggily, then stared at his plate.
None of the items looked particularly appealing to him, now that he was a little more awake.
"I'm not sure. Had planned to sort through some notes, but I took care of it when Transfiguration was canceled." His day was now wide open.
Perhaps he could stop by the greenhouse again. Or pumpkin patch.
"What are you doing today?", he asked curiously. Ryan often had the most wonderful ideas -- unless he decided to hole up for studying.
Owl post came and Joe was busy reading a letter from his mum when Ryan asked about something in the Prophet.
"Hm?" Joe gazed onto Ryan's newspaper and soon frowned.
"It is super weird," he agreed. "But it's also kinda cool, knowing someone who's in the papers. You know her a little better, don't you?"
Joe looked at Toby for the last part.
"An article. For me?" Joe furrowed his brows as he finally opened his own newspaper to look for this article.
Concentrating on reading did make him feel more awake, sp that was something. He also stumbled upon something about Spring Cleaning for a Clear Mind? That wad odd.
Was Ryan hinting that he should be more tidy?
Joe gave his best friend a gentle poke in the side -- which turned into something of a tickle.
Then he sighed.
"Guess it's time to go to class." Packing his stuff, he got up and looked at his best friends.

MJ arrived at the Great Hall at the same time as the owls.
She sat at her house table as a tawny bird dropped a paper on top of her plate -- good thing she hadn't had a chance to grab any good yet! She traded the paper for a piece of bacon and smiled as the owl seemed to appreciate the snack.
It flew off and MJ unrolled her paper. Reading the front page with care, she buttered some toast and added marmalade on top. Sagemore...? Oh! Alora! MJ remembered her classmate talking to her about magical toys when they had duelled together.
Her mouth fell open as she read the article -- she had no idea her classmate was so famous in the magical world.
When she thought about it, it really did explain how some students had treated Alora over the months she had come to know her. Huh. A celebrity in her class... That was a bit mad to think about!
MJ took a bite of her toast as she scanned the rest of the paper. The subtitle about 'New Educational Policies' peaked her interest. Mr. Inkwood had been a very interesting character and MJ recalled everything he had told her about education and schools. She needed to visit the library as soon as possible!
She had no idea who the Weird Sisters were but a European tour did sound exciting. She'd have to ask a classmate about them, maybe borrow a CD or something.
Dragon sightings in Russia did intrigue her but MJ noticed the time and folded up her paper again. It was quickly shoved into her satchel as she grabbed her second piece of toast.
Hopefully she wouldn't get into trouble if she ate it on her way to class.

After his sixth sausage, Kody started to feel full and welcomed the distraction of owl post. Though it did remind him that he needed to write home again. Kody offered the end of his last sausage to the delivery owl who snapped it up happily.
"Thanks for working hard! Go get some well deserved rest." He urged with a smile. The owl seemed to nod in acknowledgement of his words (or was it his imagination?!) and hopped off to take flight again.
Kody scanned the front page of the newspaper, gasping in surprise at seeing Kamari smiling and waving at him. Even though it was just a picture, he waved back and skimmed through the article. It seemed to be about some amazing event they had attended over Christmas. It sounded fun but tiring, probably something Kody would have easily gotten bored at.
But Kamari was amazing like that.
He intended to flip through to read the rest when he saw something about dragons in Russia and that peaked his interest. Kody had tucked his precious dragon book into his school bag so maybe he could use it to find out what kind of dragon it had been!
Turning to the right page, Kody scanned the article for anything that would help him ask the book about the dragon when a voice cut through his thoughts.
Looking up, Kody was surprised to see Pierce's older brother addressing him but this surprise quickly turned to excitement, "Oh yeah! Let's do it!"
Kody wasn't the kind of person to break a promise if he could help it. Besides, it would be fun to fly around with the other Keeper.
He decided he could check about the dragon on his way to class so Kody picked up his things and hurried out of the Great Hall. DADA was first today which was going to be an interesting class, no doubt...
Post by William Doren on Nov 15, 2024 9:09:18 GMT 10
William didn't have too long to worry about the disinterest (or disgust) of girls when there were letters landing on his plate. Eggs and parchment were not an ideal combination so he removed them quickly and waved his hand to dismiss the owls.
Whoever trained them to deliver the post definitely needed to brush up on their aim and landing. William sniffed with distaste at the stain on one of his letters when he noticed a parcel had been left behind as well.
He suspected it had been some kind of mis-delivery when he read the label -- and was surprised to see his name on it.
The handwriting matched the stained letter and William quickly realised he knew who had written to him. Mr. Tolliver, of course.
He opened the letter, keen to know what insight Mr. Tolliver would provide when it came to his dilemma with the Twiggs twins and Reena Ashworth... Oh. Oh no.
Why was Mr. Tolliver talking about feelings?! Why did they matter when it truly was someone's background and upbringing that distinguished them as being worthy of acquainting or not.
He glanced down the Slytherin table and caught Reena Ashworth sitting with Amara Seabrook and another one of her cohort. See? That was the kind of association he should aspire for -- which just meant Reena was worth getting to know better.
Though the rest of the letter was very confusing. William re-read the same sentences that told him (or rather, encouraged him) to make the decision for himself.
He swallowed down his unease.
Why couldn't Mr. Tolliver simply tell him who to befriend or align himself with? With a troubled sigh, William set the letter down to picked up the parcel and think about what his parents would want him to do.
It wasn't like they were going to be in Azkaban forever, right? There was a chance, surely, that the judge would realise the mistake they had made and overturn the ruling. This thought made William sit up a bit straighter and he felt a bit lighter.
His parents could be home before the summer!
He thought about this as he unwrapped the parcel and realised it was a book. What a wonderful gift to receive! He scanned the letter and realised he had stopped reading before Mr. Tolliver had explained about the book.
"A Whimsical Guide to Creative Writing." He read from the bright cover. William's earlier elation at receiving the book waned somewhat when he took a closer look. This was nothing like the books he was used to studying from.
It was...
Well...
Whimsical.
The mere word was enough to make William shudder slightly. Oh dear. Still, he knew it would be bad manners not to write back to Mr. Tolliver about the kind gift so he tucked it into his schoolbag with care. He could worry about that later.
There was a rather lovely notebook attached with the book and William could appreciate that, at least. It was also placed into his schoolbag with care and now William could move on with his other letter.
"Now..." William picked up the second later and for a moment had forgotten who else he had written to -- Uncle Gilbert.
Though it was still rather odd to think of the man as his uncle. William wasn't entirely certain which side of the family they were related on, or if he did know, it wasn't something he could recall at that moment. He opened the letter and read the contents thoroughly.
Gardening had proven to be somewhat enjoyable the more William tried his hand at it. He wasn't always the best and the smells and mess was something to get used to but... There was a strange peace that come over him whenever he worked on his plants.
And being rewarded with potion ingredients that he had a hand in growing wasn't entirely bad either.
William had forgotten all about the roses he had helped Gilbert to plant and to hear how well they had thrived did spark some curiosity within him. Would he be permitted to study them during the summer?
He would definitely write back to his uncle as well... Once he had visited the Greenhouse that morning. The offer of some rare seeds was rather intriguing as well...
With that thought, he folded the letter in two and tucked everything away into his schoolbag. He hadn't made time to read the paper that morning but perhaps he would be able to after class or in the afternoon.
William finished up his breakfast and neatly arranged his used cutlery on his plate before he rose.
Another glance towards Reena Ashworth made him hesitate for a moment. They had the same class together that morning but it would be presumptuous to ask her to walk with him, wouldn't it?
Forgetting that he was still wearing his boater hat, William exited the Great Hall to head towards Divination.
Post by Reena Ashworth on Nov 15, 2024 9:40:59 GMT 10
Reena frowned a little as Victoria blurted out with a smirk. Not that she minded a little teasing here and there, she liked Victoria well enough most of the time.
Though she had to raise an eyebrow when her choice of words implied she was much older than her.
"Hm. What did you call it in your days?", she responded flatly, as though the sixth year girl were ancient.
However much she had tried to mask her nervousness, the moment Victoria said 'tame' like that, Reena could feel herself get flustered. And that was about that time Reena knew she had lost this round.
She could not offer the kind of gossip Victoria was hoping for, that would be a lie, untrue to both Tae-Sang's and her character. But she had the sinking feeling, that if she'd deny it, she would not be believed, either.
It made her wonder what Victoria was doing with boys on her down time, with that no-strings-attached-style she'd mentioned -- though she probably didn't want to know.
All she knew was, she regretted sitting down here this morning. It was way too early for any of this.
This breakfast was turning out to be rather frustrating -- especially since neither Amara nor Victoria revealed any specifics about what those rumours actually entailed.
Amara's questions were keeping her a little calmer however, and Reena felt like she could allow herself to think about what to say for a moment.
"I am aware." Reena nodded calmly. Tae-Sang had warned her about drawing attention and she had experienced it first hand the day she'd met him -- which had later escalated into that embarrassing scene in the courtyard.
Amara was right though. "Suppose I do have some things to work out," she admitted. It was embarrassing to be embarrassed. It should be more clear cut. Yes, or no. Like Amara's said.
Only it wasn't this easy, and it was terrible, being fifteen. Her least favourite age so far.
Well, no. Actually, her least favourite age to be had been ten, but that had been mostly due to Jaxen being eleven and leaving her behind to fend for herself.
"I know you'll have my back," she nodded pensively as she deterred one of the owls that had brought her letters from stepping into her yoghurt bowl. She lured it away with a slice of ham, glancing at the envelope and happily recognising her grandma's handwriting.
Though she supposed those letters were better read in quiet.
"I haven't really heard those rumours, so I can neither confirm nor deny anything." Reena decided to go with the truth, at last. She usually felt better about telling the truth than she did lies, and she thought it best not to lie to Amara of all people, anyway.
"If you're asking, if there's anything... romantic going on, I honestly cannot tell you. I think he and I both enjoy time spent together but we haven't talked about anything in that regard."
She only just managed to surpress the urge to shrug. It was bad enough she was flustered, no need for non-commital body language.
"Excuse me, if I don't make much sense, it is all rather new to me."
