Backstory
All Joe knows about his parents' love story is that they met again at a class reunion and started to travel together for his father's work. He has also caught on the fact that his father's family don't really like his mother nor him.
His mother had abandoned her travels and eventually settled down in a small muggle town to raise her son equally equipped for both the muggle and wizarding world.
Joe's father tried to take jobs closer to the family home his girlfriend had built to have an active role in his son's life despite his struggle with the muggle-environment.
When Joe was about four years old his mother started growing her own garden with magical plants for their own use that she shielded magically from muggle view. She had relatively tame plants and let Joe "help out" from an early age.
After showing his first signs of magic at the age of seven, his mother let Joe part take in group activities for young wizards and witches and swore him to secrecy. He liked having a secret at first but he soon noticed that it made him the odd one out and he struggled to maintain friendships in both the group for young wizards and muggle school.
It was around that time his paternal grandparents started showing interest in him, sending him gifts for his birthday and an invitation to their home once a year. Joe disliked going, however, as their house seemed unfriendly and his grandparents demeaning.
Joe's most prominent constant during his formative years were his mother's side of the family with his cousins @elara and Zephyr, whom he grew fairly close to.
Once Joe reached the age of eleven his parents decided that they would pick up their old ways of travel, sold the house in the muggle town and moved Joe to live with his mother's brother in Zephyr's old room (his eldest cousin having just moved out). Thus he now lives closer to London in a street inhabited by magical folk.
He spent his summer bonding even more with Ellie, and could not stop asking her questions about Hogwarts and Quidditch.

Personality
Joe is somewhere in the middle between introversion and extroversion: Shy around strangers, authority figures and bigger groups, yet highly social and likes being the center of attention within a small group he feels comfortable with. He enjoys making people laugh or smile with his antics, wants to be liked by all and is thus susceptible to peer pressure.
To his established friends, he is loyal to a fault and may turn a blind eye to their flaws. Even if he saw them tease someone else, he would be unlikely to call them out on it, more likely interpreting it as banter and might even join in.
In contrast to that, if his friends are being teased or treated poorly, he will be quick to back them up – but since he hates getting into trouble he oftentimes offers emotional support in the moment and goes to hedging a plan for vengence after. He can be quite spiteful if he feels his friends have been wronged, slower to anger if it is about himself.
Joe has a creative side to him and is at risk of losing himself in a daydream or following an enticing thought at any given moment. He especially enjoys stories about heroes – be it superheroes in comics or sports heroes in Quidditch (which he is a big fan of, his personal hero being Tammy Doyle of the Bally Castle Bats) – And he dreams of being a hero himself one day.
Joe has a love for animals and creatures and a keen interest in Herbology. He is fascinated by the inner workings of all living things, yet his approach to them is an emotional one more than a factual one. He feels weird about testing magic on animals, despite the adults‘ reassurance that no harm comes to them.

Backstory
Joe’s parents both attended Hogwarts around the same time, yet only got together after a class reunion years later and started to travel together for his father's work. While they certainly and (grossly) obviously are very much in love with each other, they have always emphasized their independence, especially his mother, which is one of the reasons they haven’t gotten married.
Another reason might be, that his paternal grandparents don’t seem very fond of his mother nor him, although, knowing his mum that might actually be an argument towards marriage.
When he came along, his mother abandoned her travels and eventually settled down in a small muggle town to raise her son equally equipped for both the muggle and wizarding world.
Joe's father tried to take jobs closer to the family home his girlfriend had built to have an active role in his son's life despite his struggle with fitting in to the muggle-environment.
When Joe was about four years old his mother started growing her own garden with magical plants for their own use that she shielded magically from muggle view. She had relatively tame plants and let Joe "help out" from an early age.
After overhearing a rather heated argument between his parents, which his mother won, it was decided that he would attend the primary school in the muggle town they lived in.
After showing his first signs of magic at the age of six, his parents sent Joe to part take in group activities for young wizards and witches and swore him to secrecy. He liked having a secret at first but he soon noticed that it made him the odd one out and he struggled to maintain friendships in both the group for young wizards and muggle school.
It was around that time his paternal grandparents started showing interest in him, sending him gifts for his birthday and an invitation to their home once a year. Joe disliked going, however, as their house seemed cold, empty and his grandparents distant.
Joe's most prominent constant, aside from his parents, during his formative years were his mother's side of the family with his two older cousins, whom he grew fairly close to on almost weekly get-togethers.
His eldest cousin liked to scare him with stories about ankle-grabbers when he was a child. He was skeptical of them at first but wary of leaving his foot out of his covers at night.
Later some kids in his primary class were telling similar stories, which is when the nightmares began.
Joe slept in his parents' bed for a while until he thought he was over his fear of the ankle-grabbers.
That was until the very end of his first year at Hogwarts, when his ankles were actually grabbed by a monster in a pond, trying to drag him under.
Once Joe reached the age of eleven his parents decided that they would pick up their old ways of travel, sold the house in the muggle town and moved Joe to live with his mother's brother (his eldest cousin having just moved out).
He spent his summer before his first year at Hogwarts bonding even more with the remaining cousin, whom he came to view as more of an older sister. He could not stop asking her questions about Hogwarts and pestering her to practice flying and playing Quidditch in a secluded area.
When he finally got to attend the school for witchcraft and wizardry, he was sorted into Ravenclaw house, which wasn’t the same as his cousin’s, but he soon grew to like it there.
He did not make friends immediately, but he soon got close to his Gryffindor classmate Toby Twiggs and his dormmate Ryan Barrow.
It did not take long for them to become his best friends and he has never been happier in his life, he hadn’t even known he had been lonely at times before meeting them. Joe and Ryan even got to spend Christmas at Toby’s house.
Joe was also given an owl named Fogaell by his grandparents, which he has grown rather fond off for her feisty personality and (in his eyes) funny and curious behaviours at times.
Aside from his best friends, new pet and homework, Joe tried out and made Chaser on his House Quidditch team, which he loved and plans to continue, even though the Captain was a bit intimidating.
On Careers‘ Day he and Toby, who also played for his own House, got to meet star chaser Tammy Doyle of the Ballycastle Bats, his favourite team, a meeting which confirmed his dreams of becoming a professional Quidditch player in the future, a dream he and his best friend seem to share.
Now, that he has a goal for his future for the first time, the thought of loosing the opportunity to work towards it by not making his house team or being removed from it, is terrifying to him.
He is eager to return to school and prove himself all over again, but especially to be reunited with his best friends.
