An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
After lunch, He was careful to make sure he left nothing behind. He almost lost his bag earlier, not because anyone was trying to take it, but just leaving it at the Great Hall when he went to class. This time, he was better.
Passing the Final Flight of stairs, he found himself in the Vacant Halls. "Okay. Hall of Mirrors. Where can you be?" It had to be somewhere with an empty wall, so he begun his search there, looking for secret passages, occasionally glancing at the Parchment in his Hands, hoping it'd react or show him the Way. Realising that the Parchment gave an exact location, he begun to count the Windows, and upon reaching number 7, turned and went to touch the wall opposite, in case there wasn't a Visible door.

When he finished counting, a door-sized mirror appeared on the wall. As he'd placed his hand where it was to be, it also ended up touching the surface of the mirror as well. Upon his contact, there was a brief resistance, as a solid object does, then his hand could sink through. Once he had stepped into the room, the mirror would fade from the outside wall so no one else could stumble upon it.
The large room was lit by torches and otherwise empty, except for a door on the other side. Not far into the room, the floor stopped being typical Hogwarts stone and instead were strange yet big squares. There was a significance to them, though their meaning wasn't clear until he noticed writing at his feet that gave a brief explanation of how to proceed.
Choose your steps carefully to make your way across the room. One wrong step, and it's over. Every safe square is connected to the next, either diagonally or directly in front of it. There is only one safe step per row. The choice is yours.
X = Danger - GAME OVER X = Caution. Is adjacent (not diagonal) to a safe path. X = Safe.
Note:Squares are not numbered in RP - it's just so mods know which one you've picked, so be sure to mention something like "he stepped on the 4th one".
This was a Puzzle. Gerald Realised. One step per row. Right now, he had 3 choices. There was definitely a System, that's for sure. Was this the Ravenclaw puzzle? was this why they had different Houses Listed?
He had to make a choice, so he decided to step onto the One directly in front of him, dubbing it Row-1, Step-4. Maybe he could give Grace the Path when she's ready to enter.
When Gerald stepped into the square, it changed colour to signify his level of danger or safety. There was some sort of magical field keeping him on that square, making it clear that he'd only get to stand on one per row. Now he had to make his next choice, and hope he didn't get any dangerous ones.
"Uh, what was Grey again?" Thinking, it was something about danger directly in front, Right? Not diagonal, though.
That made sense, but it seemed too easy. Gerald wasn't going to judge though. Moving forward, he decided to step on the 5th step. Since he couldn't move sideways, he couldn't make his map, which was disappointing, but he still had to go through.
"Okay, another Grey. I can handle this. It's simple." He said to himself, moving to step 4. It would be unlikely to have anything dangerous, at least that was what he thought.
Upon reaching that tile, he waited, seeing if he was finally on a safe tile.
"Oh, perfect" He said, realising the Colour indicated, and the Safety of his current position. Turning back, Gerald sighed at the Distance he'd travelled. It felt like he'd been here all day, and only now he found a White Square? Wow. He had to review the Instructions to this thing. White was safe, Grey had White either in Front or to the Side, but it wasn't Diagonal, right? The Black were bad, though.
The White path was the Best course of action, definitely, but what made the Greys? He needed to see this path later. Hopefully he got to see them all when or if he finished the Path. Stepping forward, he passed onto the 4th step. Hopefully it was all safe. What was going to be at the End? Hopefully it was one of those Funny Mirrors.
Once again, he'd landed on a cautionary square. It was fortunate that he had enough squares coloured now that he had a better chance of predicting which squares are safe, and he had a feeling that was needed more than ever now - if his next step was going to be something that wasn't dangerous. At least he knew the safe squares were all connected in a single step's reach.
Another Grey Tile? Gerald began to Hmm and Haw. He was close to a safe path, but how would he find it? He couldn't step on any of the Sides, but was there a pattern? Or just guessing?
When Gerald stepped onto the square, there was a WHOOSH of blackness blasting from the also-black square. It felt like he was floating or drowning, which was a confusing combination of sensations. His mind became foggy and he didn't know where he was. As if there was nothing.
Then it was over, and Gerald found himself laying on the floor in front of the door he had used to enter the room. The path he had created so far faded back to regular stones. There was a magical sort of shifting and he just knew that the entire path had been reset. It seemed that "Game Over" actually meant "Start Again". So now he was, quite literally, back to square one.
"Awww" Gerald said, realising that he had messed up. Crouching, he went to read over the instructions again, taking some time to think about it. As he did, He realised that he had messed up, accidentally reading some parts wrong. There was one safe spot each row, but three spots each row he could stand on.
Stepping onto 4, he wondered if he could find the end before the period finished.
