This wasn't on MJ's list of 'Things to do Before Winter Ends' but it was a necessary evil.
She removed her scarf, gloves and hat and placed them in a neat pile next to her satchel. Next she removed her winter cloak and robes and folded them neatly as well. Maybe she was trying to delay the inevitable but MJ knew being prepared for when she exited the water would be important.
That and she would need to see Madam Pomfrey no doubt.
Why couldn't a magic school have a nice, temperate Lake all year round? MJ opened her satchel and got out her Potions Kit. She had already done this once before for Amara and her precious knife.
MJ removed the knife and tied its sheath around her wrist with the cords provided. It would be useful to cut the Mercy's Lace free if she needed it or defend herself in the water...
She remembered last time and shuddered. That giant fish had tried to drown her and MJ wasn't going to let it have a second go.
Well, she had prepared as much as she could. MJ removed her winter boots and decided keeping her socks on wouldn't make much difference at this point. She had stripped down as much of her uniform as she felt comfortable and then went to the edge of the dock.
There was no easy way in or out of the water from the Boathouse so MJ just jumped off, doing a pencil dive into the water.
At least this way she wouldn't disturb the water too much and would have a better chance of getting the Mercy's Lace she needed.
Pale shapes in the water, against the mossy stone structure, were promising. However, there was no way to reach them from the safety of the stone dock. If willing to take the risk, it was time to go for a swim. If not, it was best to move on.
Disregarding weather or season, the water was ice cold and distracting. Submerging was the only way to try and reach the ingredients, but didn't help with getting a clear view. The water was rather murky today, as if something had thoroughly stirred the kelp deep below.
Reaching blindly for the Mercy's Lace, it was discovered that one of those three pale shapes weren't a plant or fungus at all -- but rather, the whiskers of a particularly round yet huge fish that was as pale as the genuine ingredients nearby. It woke suddenly, and made an instinctual gulp to “eat” the hand that grabbed it.
The inside of the mouth rubbed one's skin like sandpaper, though mercifully the fish only had a few stubby teeth that hurt but didn't puncture. Everything happened so fast. In its startled state, the fish frantically twisted in the water.
Having realised the hand wasn't food, or the one attached to it was too big to be eaten, the fish released its hostage. It fled into the kelp depths of the lake, leaving behind the student who was hopefully a decent swimmer -- as all that splashing made the docks too slippery to climb back onto. The stone boat ramps would have to do; it was a tricky alternative, but doable with enough determination.
The water stilled again. After that ordeal, it was a matter of deciding to go for the actual ingredients or leave the water as quickly as possible.

MJ shuddered in the water -- despite having done this before (and not too long ago) it was still a shock to the system just how cold the water of the Great Lake was.
Her stomach knotted when she saw the water turned murky and she felt like she knew what was coming next. MJ took a big breath and readied her knife...
She moved towards where she thought the Mercy's Lace was and grabbed for it, only to find she had made the same mistake as before. MJ would have cursed if she was so inclined but she kept a cooler head this time.
The fish clamped down on her wrist and MJ fought the urge to cry out, the sensation of the fish's mouth against her skin was just as unpleasant as she had remembered. She felt the first, strong tug as it tried to pull her down and she struck out with the butt of the knife.
She didn't want to injure the fish too badly but scare it off to leave her alone.
MJ also didn't want it too close to the Mercy's Lace to ruin the ingredient. She hit a second and then a third time, the fish fighting back just as strongly. She felt herself being pulled under and was glad she had prepared for this.
The whole fight probably only took, at most, ten seconds but to MJ it felt like a lifetime under the water. The fish stirred up mud and stilt from the bottom so it was hard for her to get a good look at it.
Both of them fought and struggled in the water -- MJ using her free hand with the knife to punch and jab (again, with the butt of the knife) at the fish and kicking with her legs.
Her heart raced as the seconds ticked away and she was convinced that the fish had got the better of her, that her efforts had been in vain and she would sink to the bottom of the Great Lake. Forgotten.
But just as sudden as the fish had grabbed on, it let go and swam off.
MJ stared dumbly in the direction it had fled and then quickly looked behind her -- just in case something bigger had lurked nearby. Or maybe it had been the fabled Giant Squid that resided in the lake.
Whatever had happened, she was free now and MJ didn't waste any more time. She resurfaced with a loud gasp and checked her hands for cuts, bruises or bite marks. Suddenly the coldness of the water didn't seem like the worst thing.
She took a few moments to calm down and recooperate.
MJ swam towards the Mercy's Lace once more and was glad she had spotted the actual ingredients this time. She removed the first one from where it grew and set it next to her Potions Kit. She would have to get out of the water before she could put it away.
At least the dock was a safe enough spot unless another student came back and ruined everything.
Unlikely, given the weather today. MJ smiled and removed the second Mercy's Lace, placed it with the first and was glad she had found two. This would give her exactly the amount needed for Extra-C! Nice! She swam around until she was at the stone docks and made a face.
She hadn't enjoyed climbing up on these before but there was no other choice.
It wasn't like the school was going to encourage people diving in and out of the Great Lake, especially around the Boathouse.
With a grunt, MJ hoisted herself out of the water and felt the sting of the cold, stone digging into her knees and hands. She got herself upright and hurried over to the ingredients.
Crouching next to her Potions Kit, MJ ensured they were properly stored away and only then did she relax.
Now this was a fine mess she had got herself into. She used her winter cloak to dry herself off and got dressed again. Everything was packed away and MJ made sure to keep her knife out of sight.
She was almost done. Just a visit to Professor Snape's office now.
