An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
Alora played with her coin in her hand while walking down a hallway at Hogwarts. She was just about to turn a corner when she caught the sound of voices and laugher.
“Hey, you’ve got quite a haul of beans there! Mind ‘sharing’ them with us?”
The words and laugher carried a malicious tone, and Alora needed no coin to make her decision. Determinedly, she pocketed the coin and rounded the corner, her gaze falling upon three upperclassmen – probably 4th years – standing before a girl in glasses clutching a handful of Bertie Botts Beans. Alora immediately recognised her as one of her classmates.
As the boys reached to to grab the sweets as Alora intervened. Because she was only a 2nd year, their hesitation was minimal as well. They cast impish grins her way.
“You got something to add? If not, get lost!”
Alora stood straight before them, facing them directly, not feeling intimidated at all. Her heart pounded, not from fear but from excitement. She was thrilled to give them a piece of her mind.
With a casual tilt of her head, she addressed them.
“Are you sure you wanna eat these beans? I mean, have you looked at the colour? They look pretty nasty, if you ask me!”
She pointed at the beans. Most of them were garishly green or murky brown. Then she shrugged.
“But then again, they might just match you guys. Could even taste like you. Care to find out?”
Before the boys could react, Alora grabbed her classmate’s arm and yanked her along, dropping a few beans in their hurry. They sprinted down the corridor, passing a few doors, until they arrived at another corner. The bullies were hot on their heels. Alora was about to make a sharp turn when her left foot caught on a pebble. She stumbled and the boys saw their chance to catch up – until Alora executed an elegant barrel roll, saving herself in the process.
Caught off guard, the lead boy halted suddenly, causing the others to collide with him, ending up in a tangle.
Her classmate hesitated, but Alora flashed her a grin and pulled her forward.

Even if she didn't realise it, Alora's experience with the Sorting began similar to her sister's had years ago. And with Alora's hair too, the hat sat rather well atop her head -- compared to many classmates, whose faces vanished underneath the dark flap.
She still had somewhat of a view of the hall, which surely added to the nerves as everyone started at her.
---
Whispers grew, as with everyone's curiosity. Since she could see them, they tried to at least be discreet about it... but it was clear. Alora was used to the sound of whispers in the background; could detect them quicker than most.
Even to Sagemores, who had had a magical childhood so privileged that they had seen a few dragons before. From an extremely safe distance, of course. Nothing like this -- free flying overhead, and such an unusual breed
The Sagemores had, in fact, visited Japan in the past. A few times, actually. There was a lot of magical history there, and some rather interesting worksites. There were a lot of festivals too, which Alora and Kamari were given permission to wear traditional robes for one of them. It was about all they could remember; the lights, the Japanese music, and colourful clothes.
The visit in particular that came to mind for Alora Sagemore was quite a while ago so it wasn't very clear. And they visited a lot of places, so things were bound to get a bit muddled over time. It was something about a Museum of Preserved Magical History. Her papa received a gorgeous (and massive) dragon scale as a gift from... someone?
Her papa, who usually handled things with confidence yet respect -- that day, he'd almost been afraid to touch it, as if it was that priceless and special. She had no idea where it was now, but it was a memorable part of that trip because right afterwards, they'd gone on a picnic under some cherry blossoms. A simple afternoon, but a treasured one.
Though the name Dragon Toad sounded somewhat familiar, there was nothing else that came to mind for Alora Sagemore -- she certainly hadn't seen these in person before, or knew much about them until today. Not as far as she could remember, anyway.
This was a brand new experience for a young Sagemore.
The Niffler was easily recognised -- especially for Kamari, as she had the fortune (and misfortune, given the headache their care was), of helping raise three baby Nifflers when she was eight, and Alora was six. She couldn't remember why, or where they came from, and it was only for a few weeks -- but their cuteness was as memorable as the mess they also made if unsupervised.
The second creature was a Winter Hummingbird, which was the most accurately detailed of the three drawings. She'd only seen a few from a distance one dry fall afternoon when setting up camp in a forest. Her Mama said they were so named because of the way they spend months preparing their nest for winter.
To help make things easier, we've sent a far more efficient travel bag than lugging your trunk around, since there's barely anything to bring home. They're personally made by an esteemed merchant on the magical Coast of England. It's a traditional process, and very costly. Please treat them well, but they're yours to keep.
If you have any difficulty with the public between the Front Gates and Hogsmeade Station, look for a bodyguard in violet. She's there to keep an eye out, just in case. We've been in the Daily Prophet more than usual lately, and a few reporters are pushing for comments. Stay attentive, and stick to your sister at all times.

Included with the letter were two stylish satchels, each bearing either Kamari or Alora's first name. It was finished with a little sage leaf; their Papa's sense of humour, no doubt.
Home It was cold and there was a bit of snow in the air, but the grounds itself were a nice break from the stark white they were used to at Hogwarts and around London. The climate was a bit different at the Hollow, for whatever reason. It was a rare sight to be blanketed with snow, and this year didn't include it yet again.
Toymaker's job He poked a cog with his wand, and it promptly spat smoke in his face. Zareb didn't even flinch, just closed his eyes and accepted his fate. This was perfectly normal for a toymaker; he was far used to it by now. Still, it was quite rude of it.
Getting ideas shot down because of practicality or target demographic was always going to happen. For every ten ideas they had, they'd be lucky if one made it to the planning stage. It happened less for the adults who knew this business inside and out by now, but it still happened. It was something the kids were still learning; when they were younger, it did feel like their ideas just weren't good enough.
But they learned by growing up in this life -- and it helped that, now and again, their Papa's ideas got shot down in flames by Aunt Taraji the moment they left his lips. Even he was known for a sulk or two at that.
The Rule of Plans That was a bit of an unspoken thing at the Sagemore cottage, unlike when they were off elsewhere; never, during a slow moment, ask about the plans. Doing so almost always tempted fate. The last time this happened was over the summer. Irene was bored and asked if anyone had plans... not five minutes later, an enchanted fishbowl's spell backfired and flooded the workshed.
No one was even in there at the time, though Kamari still swore she'd seen Ringwald fleeing the scene.
Failure and Colourchanging blankets But they'd also learned there were rare exceptions; if an idea got shot down, it might get a second chance if you can prove it'll work. Unfortunately, the young heirs didn't quite have the skills or experience for that yet.
Only Alora had ever managed it, at the tender age of five, when she'd envisioned a blanket that changed its pattern and colour everyday. They'd said it wouldn't work, because it would be too easily confused with other blankets or get lost. And a bunch of other reasons. So began her month-long mission to swap out their blankets, pillow cases, and bath towels as often as she could.
With Kamari, her co-conspirator, of course. Both girls made a point of saying how lovely it was that a blue towel with fish was now red with lizards. It drove Zareb and Tarji crazy, especially as it felt like nothing was ever given the chance to get used or not knowing what was clean -- but Irene was won over, and they settled on the idea of not using whole blankets but something small and most children would likely only have one of.
The idea evolved from the concept, but Alora had won.
Dust Travel was extraordinarily rare, but was essentially a global passport. The Sagemores perfected the method and created their own dust (even patenting its chalk form), which enabled them to freely travel anywhere in the world they needed. It had the bonus of being far more pleasant than Apparition or Portkeys, though a Sagemore's upbringing included regular exposure to many forms of magical transport to ensure they adapt to any situation or in case of emergency.
The circle had to be as neat as possible, and with enough space around them to not have anything crossing the line or getting too close. Yet not too big that there was a lot of empty space. The destination had to be written very clearly, similar to Floo Powder -- but with worse consequences.
Kamari and Alora knew the story well -- of a Great-Uncle several generations back who accidentally dropped himself, and two sacks of water-activated fizzy-bangs, into the middle of an ocean.
Not that she had such pressure now, as the circle and the writing didn't do anything on its own; it required use of a wand; her parents would surely check everything over before anything were to happen. But this was a big moment, regardless. It was a sign of her growing up, to the point that her training as a Sagemore Heir was becoming more focused and no longer just about learning things -- but also doing them.
It meant they believed she had a solid enough foundation now, and was old enough to gradually become more hands on. Kamari knew the basics -- now it was time to be tested on them, and to be entrusted with new tasks. She knew that also meant there could be consequences depending on her actions or words, and that meant failing or making mistakes would also be her own mess to clean up. With their guidance, if necessary, but this was it.
This was the point every Sagemore waited for. It wasn't the same for everything, but her parents clearly thought she was ready for the next step. Everything came full circle (literally), as Zareb handed off the the chalk to his daughter. He gave her an encouraging nod, then waited for her to begin.
Thankfully, it was magic chalk so the uneven ground or scattered leaves meant nothing. They could draw it in mid-air if they wanted to, though it was absurdly more complex to enchant, and yet Irene had done so a few times in the past. The soft ground of a forest was easy work.
---
Zareb did a, overhead, circular wave of his wand -- dirt and similar organic matter of the clearing spun up from the ground and mixed with the dust released from the chalk, encasing them in a tornado for a brief moment. The powerful whooshing and dramatic display was familiar now, but had frightened them in their earlier years.
The ground beneath them glowed white and spiraled into the dust -- then taking it away, to evaporated overhead. It was a fast, loud, and highly magical process that felt to take a while and yet was surely less than 30 seconds.
As the enchanted dust vanished upwards, their new location was revealed.
Sagemore Clothes Irene handed out their thick travel jackets, complete with a wooly hood if needed and some bigger-on-the-inside pockets. Good for keeping wands warm, too.
They were at a low point of a foresty mountainside, so some hiking was needed to get to Hong Kong city itself, but nothing that they weren't used to. Irene had them change into their "Terrain Boots", which they hadn't done when arriving home; these boots were a Sagemore product they'd always had, but only started selling to private clients a few years back.
Strong, waterproof, and adaptable to all terrains. Comfy, too. They'd wear them all the time if they could, but these were expensive and they could not justify taking them to Hogwarts. But they were perfect for anywhere they travelled. Was it strange to miss a pair of boots?
Lightbulb experiment Last summer they had a bit of an experiment with a thing called a lightbulb. Aunt Taraji explained it was what Muggles used to light things, rather than relying on wands or candles / lanterns. They worked by something called electricity, which was a type of energy that Muggles harnessed in the place of magic.
It was all still quite beyond them and very confusing, but had made for a fun experiment... despite them using magic rather than electricity to show how it worked. And that would explain why it then exploded and issued a lot of smoke. They'd anticipated it though, so there was already a protection spell around it. Not one was hurt just got a mighty big fright -- which even Ringwald survived, despite his shriek and falling from the counter.
Experience with the Muggle World But Alora and Kamari were fortunate in their upbringing, to have seen more Muggle electronics than most magical folk. Except, it was quite unpleasant. Lots of noise, flashing lights, and overall a pain to eyes or ears most of the time. Irene claimed Muggles were used to it and enjoyed them, but the girls remained skeptical of that.
Unlike most parents, neither Zareb nor Irene made any instinctive move to catch or help her. They were accustomed to this by now, and insisted on letting her fall if the only harm was a few bumps or embarrassment. That was how she learned to pick herself up, and improve her own balance.
But they did stop walking, so Alora wouldn't get left behind while she tried to keep her balance and right herself in time. Sharing a glance, they got into attentive move -- as if watching the outcome of a high-intensity sport / game. Zareb nodded as she made her adjustments, then they applauded as Alora succeeded with a V-pose at the end.
'Well done, very graceful,' Irene said, giving Alora a thumbs up then glanced at her husband. 'What do you think?'
'Hmm, it was a mere pebble. But a graceful finish, I agree.' Zareb eyed his youngest daughter seriously, though there was amusement in his eyes and a quirk of his lips. 'I'd give it a solid seven out of ten.' 'I'll go with an eight out of ten.' Irene held up four fingers a hand. 'That pose was inspired. You've come a long way since landing on your back in puddles.'
They didn't ask Kamari for a score, assuming she was probably so over this little routine by now. But it was for Alora's sake, as to never turn her falls into something negative or shameful. And also not to fear falling, just of course be careful in riskier areas. She'd continue to improve, and they were proud of her for that.
Familiar Market At least that was something they knew; rarely did they visit a place like this and not get to try the street food. It was something Muggles and Magical Folk shared, though of course the food itself tended to be quite different.
The market was noisy and bustling with activity, yet it was familiar. Not just for their common trips to places like this for street food almost everywhere they went, but also the general atmosphere of it reminded them of when they hosted a travelling sales cart in Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley when they needed to clear out some stock.
Minus the fact that everyone spoke Cantonese here -- which was not a language Alora or Kamari knew or could even recall a few simple words from. A few English words were in the mix though, so they weren't completely out of their depth.
Food 'Anything take your fancy? Me, I'm partial to Bolo Baos -- pineapple buns. Though, it doesn't actually contain pineapple. I saw some roast goose too; a Cantonese specialty. Lots of dumplings too, of course.'
The Sagemores bought all the things they'd mentioned, and Zareb considered the roast goose to be the best. It was a nice moment, wandering while eating -- with Irene pointing out various cultural aspects or products she knew, and Zareb teaching them a few basic Cantonese greetings.
Zareb sighed in exasperation at the sight. While their parents were clearly far more used to such a predicament, this was only Alora's third dragon (not counting the one that flew over Hogwarts). It was Kamari's fifth. Most of those were from a distance or the dragons were more contained. The memories were a big vague, mostly wrapped in awe and a sense of it being more of a dream than reality.
Apart from Kamari's vivid memory of her third dragon when she was nine, which was a juvenile spikey thing that thrashed a muddy village it had been set loose on. Its tail hit a basket of cabbages, which had flung at her and smashed directly above her against the hut wall she was backed against. A close call, and why she hadn't seen much of if for the rest of the trip since then.
Strangely, she couldn't remember why she was out there alone in the first place. She'd been safe enough away from the dragon itself, but close enough that fling debris could reach her. Kamari just remembered that her Aunt had found her in time, and they rushed back to the group on the other side of the village. Alora and Irene hadn't been on that trip. The rest was hazy at best.
But there was no mistaking the dragon they saw now. The best view they'd ever had of one, though perhaps too good a view -- as there were clear scars on its legs and neck, as well as a croak to its roar as if its voice was strained. Nothing seemed fresh, but the dragon was clearly on guard. And it simply refused to budge from the entrance to the mine.
Chocolate And there was this year's chocolate treat made by Irene -- the finest chocolate they'd ever tasted, sitting on a gingerbread base. Irene was still yet to share the recipe, despite many attempts to ask or figure it out. Either way, it was always unbeatable in taste, and large enough to fit on their whole hand.
This year, the shape was a Hungarian Horntail dragon breathing fire. The "fire" bit of the chocolate had a bit of spice to it. The details were almost too good to eat, but knowing how good it would taste surely was too big a temptation to miss.
Breakfast After a round of hugs and festive greetings, as well as a proud smile from Irene as they complimented her chocolates, the Sagemores all sat down to eat breakfast. There was grilled chicken and onions, some fried pastries with bean filling, and the main dish of eggs poached in a spicy (yet child-friendly) tomato sauce.
Meals were unpredictable when travelling; sometimes they had local dishes or used local ingredients, and other times (like today) they just made whatever they felt like having. This breakfast was a rather typical Sagemore meal -- with Zarebs favourite chicken and onions, and Irene's favourite pastries. There were also goblets of thick, frothy milk to enjoy.
Zareb got out his wand, with its beautifully silver markings decorating the handle. A custom design, and there was some other meaning behind it they were yet to understand; Taraji's wand had the same.
'Overall temperature in Hong Kong is cold but manageable,' Irene said, checking a geographical device that just looked like a bunch of floating gold bits and pieces over a disc to Kamari and Alora.
Zareb sighed, as the question meant they would be spending some time in the Muggle streets. He was not a fan, but also considered it to just be a pain to traverse or deal with. Cities weren't something he enjoyed, though Irene loved to look up at the towering buildings. It was like a whole other world.
Zareb eyed his watch -- his very complicated and magical version of one.
Zareb carefully inspected Kamari's work, even walking alongside the circle. He was known to be quiet serious and thorough in his work, and this was no exception. And in his eyes, there was always room for improvement; nothing, not even his own work, was flawless or perfect. --- 'Have owls been having trouble locating you?' Zareb asked, gaze focused on some gemstones.
That was something he did to try and appear less intimidating than giving his focused attention to someone, but it didn't really work. Not for a man of his reputation, and the tone he used was quite proper.
'Sek,' Irene spotted the man first, giving a wave that the children recognised as a false friendliness -- usually when someone was about to get an earful if they didn't show the proper manners or resolution to a problem. --- Irene turned to the sweet stall, as a means of concealing her annoyed expression -- yet another familiar look for the children who knew their parents' mannerisms so well. That look was reserved for those who neglected to inform the relevant parties of any situation -- in this case, Sek's negligence to owl back exactly what he just told them.
Everyone's doing well, though Ringwald was in a no-treats time out yesterday for having stolen your Mama's favourite scarf.
He'll accepted scratches behind the ear or belly rubs. Dealer's choice.
He knew to stay close -- and was still not the slightest bit aware that his collar, so enchanted that it only existed when needed, had both a tracking charm and a homing spell, should he embark on a misadventure. It also protected him against various terrain and weather conditions. All of this was purely Irene's work, and she added to it over time. Only the best for their silly little weirdo.
how are you both? How are Aunt Taraji and Ringwald? I can’t wait to see you all at home on Christmas!
I’m feeling great, today was awesome!
Today was actually a Quidditch day, and Gryffindor played against Slytherin! Of course I cheered for my house. It was really an exciting and close match. Tied scores until the end!
Too bad our house lost… But next time will be different! For sure!
To be honest, that is also why I’m writing to you. Watching the game was so exciting, I felt like wanting to hop on a broom and join in!
So… can I? Would you allow me to join the team?
Of course I would also need to see if they accept me, but I’m confident they will. Why wouldn’t they, right?
I’d be happy to hear from you, regardless of what you decide on. Give Ringwald and Aunt hugs from me!
I'm really happy I got your permission for Quidditch. And I already have good news: I got a spot at the Gryffindor team, as Chaser! I don't know if Kamari would like to tell you herself, but I just spoil it for you now: She got in as well, same position! How funny is that?
Regarding the broom, I'll have to think a bit about which one I want to have. But I will tell you in time!
I just really wanted to tell you this and also reply to the rest of your letter.
I have to disappoint Aunt Taraji, there was no conspiracy with our letters. Kamari and I found out about that coincidence only at dinner the very same day! Kamari also told me there what Ringwald has done. I hope, you scolded him properly. That is no way to play pranks!
And I wanted to let you know, Mama, that Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff will actually play tomorrow! I will definitely watch the match, so I will write you the outcome! But I'm really curious why you want to cheer them on when they are paired like that, and not when they are playing against Slytherin?
Also, today I saw something awesome: a dragon! A real one! Only from a distance, but still!
Don't worry, it was harmless. It just flew a round around the castle, being curious. And huge and majestic! But it also looked hurt and weird. I didn't recognise the breed. What do you think, where would such a rare dragon normally live or come from?
I have to get going, but I'll write to you again soon!
It was wonderful to hear from you, especially when you took the time out of a Quidditch day to write home. <- Your Papa made me write this. He's sitting beside me, writing to Kamari as well. Aunt Taraji suspects a conspiracy for the timing of yesterday's letters, but we're willing to believe you're both just that in-sync.
We're doing well, though I'm not on speaking terms with Ringwald at the moment. I'm sure your Papa explained why to Kamari. I simply cannot.
We're also looking forward to Christmas. For seeing both of you, of course. Not so much the business flood, as always. Busiest time of year, as you know. We'll appreciate the extra pair of hands, though.
It seems you stayed longer at the match. Kamari didn't give us much details, but I'm quite surprised how close the game was. You'll have to let me know when Hufflepuff plays Ravenclaw, as I certainly wish to cheer for my house before I have to develop a Mama-Bias to cheer on Gryffindor instead.
I miss you! Not too much longer now, then I can give my girls the biggest hugs ever. Stay focused until then, though. Don't let the approach of Christmas distract you. And keep us updated, as we enjoy hearing from you. I'll pass this off to your Papa now, to answer about trying out for Quidditch. Love you, darling!
Papa here. As for trying out for Quidditch, we don't see why not? If this is something you'd like to do, and it won't negatively impact your studies or mental well-being, then you also have our full support. Unfortunately, work prevents us from being able to attend matches as often as we'd like -- but if you make it onto the team, please let us know. We will, of course, also purchase a broomstick of your choosing, should you then need one.
All those training broomsticks you tested out growing up would surely pay off now, huh? In fact, we might have you and Kamari test out some more now you'll be getting a feel for an real broomstick. But don't let your big sis claim she has dibs or higher skill; you both have the same amount of experience on a broom; your age plays no role here.
Mama said she'll pass on your hugs to Aunt Taraji, and even to that adorable little rascal.
