Twigs crunched underneath Kassia's feet as she followed her friend to the edge of the forest. Though it was a partially sunny afternoon, the Forbidden Forest looked as dark and haunted as ever before. Unwilling to show any trepidation, Kassia applied a beeswax lip balm. She had her wand with her as well as a very sharp nail file if necessary. That was all that was needed.
She nodded to Amelia. "Lead the way, brave Gryffindor."
"Its going to be dangerous..." Amelia said, thought it was mostly to remind herself. She pulled out her own wand and check to make sure she had her jars for the spores. She had done her research on where to find them, knew she needed the jars.
She began the walk into the forest, her wand at the ready she looked ahead. Her heart was pounding in her chest and she swallowed. She was probably brave bordering on stupid... but if Snape wanted to hand out these assignments, she was going to do it.
Kassia also pulled out her own wand and walked directly behind Amelia, at an angle so she could watch their backs. She had rarely been in the Forbidden Forest even for her own needs. She usually just bought them off of Mardling. But Snape wanted Amelia to find the ingredients herself. On top of which, she probably didn't want to speak to him now. Kassia didn't blame her.
"Yes, but I laugh in the face of danger," she said, hoping her confidence would relax Amelia.
Amelia smiled over at Kassia in her confidence and looked ahead. She kept her eyes open and began the search of the ground. She knew she had to get away from the edge of the forest, so she moved carefully into the forest, searching for the bulbs that would indicate where to dig.
Ugh, she was going to get her hands dirt for Snape. She wrinkled her nose at the idea. Her parents were going to ground her if something out here managed to kill or maim her... But, she needed this dang ingredient.
Despite the time of day they chose to venture into the forest, there was still an unsettling feeling that they were being watched. Even if they looked around and tried to pinpoint a culprit, it would always remain a shadow in the corner of their eye or a whisper on the wind.
Regardless of how brave or bold either of them felt, surely a shiver was running down their spine at that very moment.
If they managed to ignore this, in a few steps Amelia would have noticed the ground beneath her feet was beginning to squelch.
Only a few feet away, crowded in the undergrowth, was a small cluster of bulbs. There were two that had fully grown and would be usable as potion ingredients.
However, they seemed to be oozing some kind of thick slime which had flowed down over the bulbs and puddled around them. Only the tops of the bulbs were above ground, open to signal their maturity, so they would have to extract the full thing in order to get what they really wanted - the Higgus spores.
This was going to be a messy, sticky task if Amelia and Kassia were up for it. At least there was one silver lining, the bulbs nor the slime seemed to smell of anything really. They were just very slippery looking.
The darkness and unsettling feeling that came over Amelia sent a true shiver down her spine and she felt her heart quicken even more. Something lurked in the shadows, but when she turned, she never saw anything. It was there, just at the corner of her eye... But, she couldn't quite place it, couldn't quite figure it out.
Then she saw the cluster of bulbs and wrinkled her nose at the oozing, think slime that was there as well. She searched her bag and sighed in relief when she found the gloves she used for herbology. They were buried, but she was glad she hadn't taken them out.
Giving them a quick slap on her leg, she put the gloves one, juggling the wand while she did so. If there was one thing she wasn't going to it, it was let her wand fall from her hand. Looking over at Kassia, she smiled.
"Found them," she said in a hushed tone before she went to work getting out the ingredient in order to put them into the jars. It was nasty work, but she was glad she had the gloves. She still kept an eye out, glancing up while she dug the whole thing out and putting it into the jar. It didn't smell...
"I just want to get the hell out of here..." She growled to herself and Kassia as she fought to find the spores and get all the stuff out. Her gloves were filthy at this point, but she didn't care. She was going as fast as she could without losing anything.
Even with her gloves, it was evident to Amelia that the slime covering the bulbs would make this tough work.
Digging down into the soft ground, she was quickly covered in odorless slime up her arms. It clung to her clothing and any exposed skin, gooey and cold.
But despite working hard, her grip would slip and slide. The more she tried, the more the slime caused her gloves to become slick.
Now her gloves were working against her rather than helping her with her task.
She would have to consider removing her gloves and use her bare hands to dig through the slime covering the bulbs and scoop out the spores into her waiting jars.
Kassia kept guard behind them both, eyes flickering back and forth. No wonder people had cut down forests with such reckless abandon- they were creepy. How could anyone bear to be somewhere where it was impossible to tell if something was about to sneak up? Kassia had half a mind to invent a tree-cutting spell and knock these all down.
Luckily, it didn't take long for Amelia to find the Higgus spores. Kassia watched and waited as she attempted to claim them. Kassia had no interest in the ingredients herself, but would offer assistance to Amelia if she needed it. She was content to keep a watchful eye out.
Amelia was covered in slime, she hated it and this just only solidified her hatred for a certain potion's master. Why in the world would he do this to a student? Force them into the forbidden forest? It was like he knew that students would just fail this. Nope, not Amelia Twiggs... She was either brave or stupid for this.
She ripped off the gloves and tossed them at her bag, digging deeper into the dirt and slime. She was going through the slime with her bare hands, pushing it aside to get to the spores so she could scoop them into the jars. It was work that was making her sweat a little, but she refused to rub her arms across her forehead. She needed a shower now, especially before she went and saw Snape.
"At least the Algae won't be this hard," she said in a grumble while she worked her way through the slime. The jars were right there and then she saw it... The bulbs that were what she needed, the spores... Smiling, she grabbed the jar and used hand and jar to scoop them up. She did the same with the second jar and put them in her bag before she stood and put her gloves in there as well.
"Got them, lets go," Amelia said with a smile, wand out and ready to head out of the forest. She began walking the way the came, eyes wide open as she held her wand up.
The spores were trapped within the slime and it took a few attempts for Amelia to fish them free, each one slightly squishy and roughly the size of a golfball.
A few times she would think she had one in her grasp, only to find it would slip through the slime. She would have to pinch each one carefully, a balancing act between hard enough to remove them and gentle enough not to damage them.
Retrieving enough to fill each jar, about a handful for each, certainly took it's toll on Amelia. She would be tired, each spore a battle between herself and the slime which would cause them to slip away more often than not.
A shower and change of outfit was much needed after her task was complete.
But, now it was time for them to leave the forest and it would be a good idea for them to keep a close eye on their surroundings.
Kassia nodded to Amelia as she claimed the Higgus spores. "Well done. Let's get you cleaned up."
She led the way, glad that they had not had to venture particularly deep into the woods. She had her wand at the ready, suspicious of every moving leaf or snapping twig. Kassia was sure her boots were covered in horrible unmentionables, and tried not to think too much about it.
Amelia walked with her wand up, retracing the way they had come. She needed to go back to the Savannah and she didn't turn her head when she spoke to Kassia.
"I still need Algae from the Savannah... Once we get out of here, why don't you head back, I'll run there and try and find that." It was all part of her plan. If she could get the Algae, she could get a quick shower and run it down to the Dungeon for Snape.
Everything in the forest was scary as they came. She kept turning her head to shadows, but she felt like they weren't shadows. She looked ahead, hoping to see the light at the end of the tree line.
A growing sense of foreboding follows them to the treeline, making their steps have an edge of urgency to them but as soon as they break past it... The pressure dissipates.
Maybe they don't talk about it but if they share a lot, both girl knows the other felt it too.
A weak wave of sunlight breaks through the clouds and warms them both for a moment. Their jaunt into the forest was over and they both got away unscathed.
Amelia let out a sigh of relief when they were out of there. She was disgusting, but for now, she needed to do one more thing. She smiled at Kassia, a smile for only a true friend.
"Thanks Kass," she said with her bright smile, her fiery hair framing her face. "I'd hug you, but..." She opened her arms and looked down at herself. "I'll save you the mess... Until later, love?" Amelia smiled and headed towards the Savannah. Having Kassia at her side only showed she had good friends.
