An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
Amelia had left the castle with the parchment and was looking for Mud Toadstool and Algae. She knew that the Mud Toadstools grew in damp grasses and with the rest rain, she was sure to find some. And it liked the mud, so she made her way to the edge of the Savannah not far from the lake itself. It had to be around here somewhere...
She still worried about the other thing though and wondered how in the world she was going to get that particular item. Maybe she could get someone to go with her? A professor would be ideal... But she didn't think she would have time for that. Exams were coming up... Another thought was Lucas, but she hated that idea too... She hated asking for anything from him, since he always liked to hold things over the heads of other.
Focusing back on her task, she looked in the grass for Mud Toadstools.
With no luck on the Mud Toadstools, she began searching closer to the banks. The ground was softer here, so she was careful. But, one had to get dirty to find the things she was looking for. It was too bad Kassia wasn't here, they could look together and maybe they could both take a trip into the forest to find the needed ingredient... How else was she going to complete the task for the Professor?
Kassia had tried to go relax in her dorm room after extra-curricular work, but found her mind disquiet. With exams coming so soon and having to skirt around drama in her day-to-day life, she hadn't spoken with Amelia in quite some time. She was sure she felt lonely. Eventually, Kassia gave up on resting and left the castle, heading towards the lake.
She knew Amelia was focusing on potions lately, so she'd be out looking for ingredients. Kassia looked around the shores of the laked, peeked in the boathouse, and made it to the savannah before she spotted the very familiar mop of red hair. Kassia glanced around, but it appeared they were alone. Most students preferred to be cramming in the library at this time of year, it seemed.
Kassia walked over to the Gryffindor, who was hunting by the banks for ingredients. Kassia hadn't been there that long ago, searching with another much smaller Gryffindor. She stopped, observing the filthy splendour of the lakeshore.
"You know, a decent gardener could do wonders with this mess."
Amelia looked up when she heard someone speaking and smiled when she saw Kassia. If someone did garden this place, it would loss the different plants needed for potions. Amelia felt it was prettier just like this and stood up, putting her hands on her hips.
"No, I think it is prefect... Besides, with a garden, we couldn't find the toadstools or the algae I need," she offered the list of three items given to her by the Professor.
3 Mud Toadstools 2 Jars of Algae 2 Jars of Higgus Spores
One might catch her attention as being in the Forbidden forest, but it was what it was. How Amelia was going to get it with just the afternoon left, she had no idea. But, she would think of something.
Kassia supposed she wasn't surprised by Amelia's response. She'd grown up in nature while Kassia preferred the structure and careful manicuring of city gardens. Still, the fact that her friend didn't seem to be angry was a good sign. Kassia stepped forward and looked at the list. She wrinkled her nose. Two ingredients were quite filthy indeed, and the third was in the Forbidden Forest.
"All this for Snape? Well, let me help."
Kassia crouched down, wishing she hadn't worn her nice lavender cardigan. She searched the muddy banks with her gaze, looking for any signs of toadstools. As she did, she glanced at Amelia out of the corner of her eye.
With their combined efforts, the Mud Toadstools were much easier to spot among some nearby reeds -- a bit out of reach, so would require moving through some of the thick mud near the bank. Nothing too deep, but messy and rather slick to move around in.
It was a great find, though. Four viable ingredients -- though neither could take more than three. Or they could split it however they chose.
Kassia selected one single mud toadstool for herself and held her hands out to Amelia to indicate she should take the other three. She would never turn down a free ingredient, although her delicate fingers and tall boots were now speckled with mud. Surely wizards could have their ingredients come to them rather than this peasant labour.
"How unfortunate that we are reduced to wading. I suppose you're planning on visiting the Forbidden Forest later today?""

Amelia smiled when she saw the Mud Toadstools and went out to get them. She was careful, not wanting to fall. But she got them out and put them in her bag. At the question, she looked towards the forest.
"I need that one ingredient... I swear, Snape is just trying to get me put in the hospital." At least, that was her opinion.
Kassia looked around herself at the sea of mud. She was surprised the boarites she had cared for weren't found here, rolling to their heart's content. She waded closer to the water's edge, looking for where algae might have been washed up from the previous night. Why couldn't potion ingredients be something pleasant, like lavender petals?
"He does like to make the Gryffindors work twice as hard."
Amelia looked over at Kassia with a duh look before they searched for the Algae she needed. She had some jars with her, but the job was finding the stuff. As she looked, she was careful not to slip or fall. Her eyes on the water's edge, searching for any sign of the algae.
"That is because Snape is a cruel man... You know, if he left Hogwarts, I would likely celebrate," Amelia said and glanced over at Kassia. "Sorry, I know he is your head of house... But... He really does bully others not in his house."
Kassia stuck her fingers into her skirt pockets, as they were beginning to get cold. It was possible that algae would be floating on the water surface, but she didn't fancy going out any deeper. She listened to Amelia as she spoke. Kassia was hardly going to begrudge anyone for having a problem with Snape. The man had issues.
"I'm well aware, dear. You know, it's unfortunate. My House has some of the most passionate and clever people, but too many think they can only get ahead by being... well, nasty." She huffed. "As you unfortunately saw for yourself."
Amelia stood and gave up on the Algae, she could come back later, after lunch or something. She walked away from the muck and crossed her arms as she looked out over the lake. It was true, but she had seen that in all houses.
"I don't think it is just a Slytherin-thing... I think any person can," she said as she let out a sigh. "Maybe Slytherins just seem to do it the most because people like to target them as the threat," she said with a sigh and shook her head.
Kassia followed her friend out of the muck, lifting her skirts to prevent them from being dirtied. Perhaps the rain had washed all the algae away. She followed her up the bank and then sat on a grassy knoll, crossing her legs in a lady-like way.
"You are correct. Slytherins are expected to act a certain way, and so many of them do. But having respect is so much better than being feared. I wonder if other magical schools have this problem."
Amelia stood there for a bit, just looking over the lake and up at the castle. With the recent rumor, she was just trying to make it to summer. She still needed t write home to her parents. Maybe now would be as good a time as any.
"That is a good question, we should try and find out one day," Amelia said as she found a dry spot and sat down. "Hey, I need to write this letter home, so give me a few, okay?" Amelia took out some parchment and began to write her mum the letter.
Hey Mum,
So, the school year has to end with some drama... Someone began a rumor about me hitting another student. Just so you know, it didn't happen. I never touched the girl, I wouldn't do that and bring shame on you and dad. Yeah, I know I have a temper, but nothing that drastic. At least, I don't think I do.
Anyway, through it all, Gryffindors have had my back and I have constantly been telling those who believe me that I didn't do it. Through it all, my friend Kassia has stuck with me. For a Slytherin, she is really loyal and I don't know what I would have done without her. I really hope you guys will meet her one day.
Love, Amelia
She rolled it up when she was done and put it aside. It was a quick letter, but she needed her parents to hear about the rumor before someone else told them... Like Tobias or Martha.
