MJ stood outside of Professor Rickard's office, taking a breath. She hadn't been in here before and wondered what it would be like.
Of course, she had heard some students talking that he had an extensive, personal library and that alone was enough to pique her interest. Luckily, she also heard about the Sorting Hat being stored there too. She was curious about the start of year song and wanted to pick its brains - so to speak. Something about it was very curious indeed.
She knocked on the door and waited for an answer, hands linked in front of her. Of course, there was the worry that the Professor wouldn't be in or wouldn't be in a good mood to allow her entry into his office. Well, all she could do was wait and hope for the best.
Headmaster Rickard waved his hand, and the door swung open to reveal the young Ravenclaw waiting on the other side. He was rather difficult to read, though appeared mostly neutral -- though a bit surprised to have company on an afternoon when something as attracting as a duelling tournament took place elsewhere.
He stood behind his throne-like desk chair, having turned away from his window view when MJ had knocked. He remained there to study her curiously, one hand tucking into his robes pocket in search of a watch on a silver chain.
'Yes?' Rickard asked her, glancing away to check the time. 'May I help you, Birdwhistle?'

A shiver ran up her spine when she was addressed by the Headmaster. She was surprised that he knew her name but then again, he had to be a very powerful wizard and know a great deal of things. MJ took a breath and met his gaze, calling upon whatever confidence she could to answer his question.
"Sorry to disturb you Headmaster. I had heard you had a wonderful library and willing to let students help you shelve books. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to help as well?" She wouldn't ask about the hat.
She didn't want him to possibly turn her away if she mentioned it. Besides, she did intend to shelf some books at least. She could do both at once, right? She gave the Headmaster a polite smile and waited for his answer.
Rickard wasn't surprised by her request, as it had been happening more frequently lately. Why she preferred to do this over watching the duels was unusual, but he didn't fault her for it. If anything, he considered it a show of good character that someone her age would consider this something relevant and considerate enough to pass up on other opportunities for.
'Very well.' He nodded, moving around his chair so she could see him better.
'Tracking Charms. The crates may seem never-ending,' he explained, pocketing his watch before he sat at his desk to sort paperwork. 'Arrange them alphabetically, by author. You can work for as short or long as you wish, and leave of your own accord. The afternoon is wearing thin, but you have a moment.'
The wall was rather tucked away at the other end of the office, providing MJ with the privacy to work without interrupting Rickard or being overheard. Somewhere around the middle, out of reach but able to be easily conversed with, was the Sorting Hat. It was still and quiet, yet the folds of its eyes and mouth fidgeted enough to let the Ravenclaw know it was aware of her presence.

MJ let out a mental sigh of relief when he agreed. The mention of tracking charms had her raising her brows, curious. Any mention of advanced magic always had her curious and excited for the future.
Nodding at the instructions given, MJ's attention went to the books, "Thank you so much, Sir." She smiled and nodded, mlving off to the wall of shelves.
Picking a few books from the first box, she sorted them into their proper places. MJ happily put away a few dozen before she looked at the hat. MJ picked up a few more books, moving a few steps closer.
"Hello, I don't know if you remember me. You sorted me at the beginning of the school year. I never got to thank you, by the way, I'm really happy in Ravenclaw." She smiled, thinking about her Head of House and then her friend as well, Misuk.
"But I wanted to ask you... The song you sang at the feast." MJ paused for a moment, wondering the best way to ask about the lyrics. "You mentioned house legacies, was that... Just for the song or did it have a deeper meaning? Is there something the founders wanted us to know? You said that the origin of your job was forgotten and the founders' tale is misunderstood..." She sorted the books she was holding, waiting for an answer.
If the hat would even talk.

'I remember, Birdwhistle.' The hat spoke in a general tone, which wasn't the same quiet one Sarah heard in her head during sorting -- yet not nearly as loud as the bellow that tended to follow. 'I remember every student who entered these castle walls. Every one who sat atop that stool and placed me on their head.'
The folds that formed its "face" shifted, almost as if the mouth-like fold was upturned at her gratitude. To the best she could tell, it almost seemed as if the hat was smiling.
'Adventurous and loyal. I know you well,' the hat said. 'A true Ravenclaw. The legacy of a Hogwarts founder lives in all members of their house. You are, as all Ravenclaws are, her legacy.'
It regarded her curiously.
'There is deeper meaning in everything, you know. You are a legacies not simply for being placed in their house, but because you each carry with you the representation of what those founders stood for,' it said, tone firm as if imparting on her something she needed to know. 'They may be dead and gone, yet in you a part of their existence lives on. It is more powerful and special than you know. And they want you to know.'
The hat went quiet for a moment, which also gave her time to sort more books. Perhaps there was more to be discussed, but the hat also knew dinner approached and their time was limited. MJ asked the right questions, and it decided to be thorough sooner rather than later.
'Not all stories end, even the misunderstood ones -- sometimes, it is passed on. The founders had as many secrets as they did knowledge of magic. They needed far longer time than they were given to impart it all to their students,' the hat explained to MJ. 'Perhaps they left enough behind. Many others come and go, trying to devise the meaning and uncover the secret knowledge or magic of their founders but... no, they never did find the founding artefacts.'

As the hat spoke, MJ sorted more books and listened carefully.
The legacy of a Hogwarts founder lived in all members of their house... She smiled a little, nodding to the hat. She felt like she was a good match for the house the hat had settled on for her as well. Still, she had been given a choice too and wondered what would have happened if she had picked otherwise.
But she could think about that another time. MJ's brain was whirrling from the answer she had been given. So the founders did want them to know something as well and...
"Secrets... Left behind... Founding Artefacts..." She repeated snippets of the hat's explanation, making sure the books were in the right order as she did so. Wait, Founding Artefacts...?
"These founding artefacts, what are they exactly?" She couldn't recall reading about them in any book, "Does the Headmaster know about them or the Heads of Houses?"
Already, MJ was given a lot to think about. The hat's words echoed in her thoughts and she thought, it alone was a curious thing too. MJ hung around, just in case it was in the mood to answer her other questions. The light in the office shifted and she could tell her time was limited.
She had to go ask someone else about these Artefacts, it seemed.
MJ couldn't determine the exact reason, but the hat didn't answer after that. It remained still and quiet, as if it were any ordinary hat sitting on a bare shelf.
It clearly heard her, though either chose not to reveal anything else or perhaps it was not meant to be the source of further information. Wherever the truth and task lay ahead, it was up to MJ to figure it out if she wished to discover more.

The hat went quiet and MJ nodded, understanding that she wasn't going to get much further eight now. She shelved another stack of books, to help out Headmaster Rickard before giving the hat a final smile.
"Thank you very much. Maybe we will get to talk again." She left, walking around the shelves and back to the main area of the office.
"Sir, I got some books sorted. Thank you for allowing me to help but it's getting late and I'll go now." Regardless of him saying she was free to go as she pleased, she felt it was important to thank him. She smiled politely and turned, heading out of the office.
She needed to talk to someone about the Founding Artefacts and, thinking about it, she knew the History of Magic Professor would be a good bet. MJ smiled to herself, heading towards the staff room.
After all, why leave it for another day when she might be able to do it now.
