MJ had taken care to ensure she was bundled up for the cold weather before leaving the castle.
She was thankful she had thought ahead to bring her coat, hat, gloves and scarf downstairs with her at breakfast time since it really did save her having to go back upstairs for everything. She didn't fancy catching a cold just as the new school term was beginning - sitting through classes feeling sick and sleepy wouldn't be fun at all. MJ would be annoyed at herself if she missed any classes, any opportunity to learn something new.
And if she had to miss out on Quidditch too.
No, she was determined to stay toasty and warm as she walked across the snowy grounds towards Hagrid's Hut.
This wasn't a place she had been before but she had heard other students talking about getting pots from the grounds keeper here. He had seemed nice and friendly at the beginning of the year too but this morning's new worried her - she could only hope he wasn't too upset about her disturbing him so soon after breakfast. Well, at least it took her some time to walk there.
MJ approached the door and knocked as loudly as she could manage, "Excuse me? Mr Hagrid, are you in?"
Misuk had to run back towards the Ravenclaw dorms first to get their coat and scarf, before eventually following MJ along to Hagrid's hut for some herbology things. "You're really in high spirits," they commented as they walk up to MJ who apparently already had knocked and asked if anyone's home.
"Got a whole to-do list?" they asked with a bit of a grin, and ... frankly, this wasn't even far from the truth given what they had heard at the breakfast table, even if they also were a bit spaced out during that. Now, they did feel a bit more awake and ready for whatever task Hagrid might send them on to get their pots.

"Oh Misuk!" MJ felt a bit bad she hadn't waited for her roommate now, "I wasn't sure if you'd want to come along... I should have asked, I'm sorry."
She knew her room mate wasn't the kind to get upset about such things but still, she didn't want to hurt Misuk's feelings at all. They were a good friend and MJ felt lucky to have them in her dormitory as well. "Yeah, I've been so focused on what I wanted to do today." Which partially explained her leaving Misuk behind. She wondered if anyone else would show up at Hagrid's now.
"I just knocked so I think he'll answer soon~" She assured her friend. It really had only been moments since she knocked. MJ was excited about getting her starter pot for the Greenhouse. She wondered what kinds of plants she would be able to grow... Oh, would Professor Sprout be at the Greenhouses today? MJ bit her lip as she thought about this and worried.
They would just need to be as quick as possible with Hagrid and then they could go see Professor Sprout together as well.
Misuk shook their head determinedly, "I should have said something during breakfast, too. Was kinda ... spaced out. I just read more about dinosaurs recently, and apparently their ... categorisation," they slowly spoke, before speeding up again, "might also be kinda messed up. Like, what do we really know, and what is just speculation ... and if it can be disproven, how much needs to be adjusted?"
Given the fact that there was also a very no thoughts, head empty look on Misuk's face during breakfast earlier, these sure had been some thoughts in between.
They grinned at MJ's words, nodding. "Let's make today a good one, too!" Now, they definitely felt a bit more awake - and the fleeting thoughts of existential dread over misfiling disappeared - and could proccess their actual surroundings a bit better. "I do hope he opens up soon ... it's really gotten cold." Sure, they were wrapped in layers over layers, but standing wasn't known to help with the cold.
After a moment, they heard the subtle crunch of large boots against the snow. Fang barked and came into view, shortly before Hagrid joined him. Fang shook loose any lingering snow -- splattering it towards the two first years. 'Ah, hello.' Hagrid stopped, surprised to see he had company awaiting him. 'Hope yeh weren't waiting long. How can I help yeh?' he asked, opening the hut to put away a few things before returning to the doorway.
Fang dashed inside, whining as he curled into the warmth of his bed.

"Mister Hagrid!" MJ greeted the Groundskeeper with a bright smile, not expecting him to come from anywhere but inside his hut. She stood aside, giving space for him to go inside and tried to get a good look at his dog as well. It was a large breed but MJ didn't know the name but her curiosity was piqued. Still, she couldn't allow herself to get so easily distracted.
Okay, maybe asking a few questions would be okay. She glanced at Misuk before speaking.
"First off, what kind of dog do you have? And does he or she have a name?" She loved animals, having been raised on a small, hobby farm. MJ wondered if they would be allow to bring Hagrid's dog a treat some time...
MJ shook away the distracting thoughts and then revealed the purpose of their visit.
"And secondly, we heard that you would be able to help us with something. Me and my friend, Misuk, we both want to grow our own plants. The only problem is, we don't have any pots to do that." She omitted their lack of seeds as well but they could solve that problem later, "You wouldn't happen to have two spare pots? One for me and one for Misuk?"
'This dopey dog?' Hagrid gave him a fond look. 'That's Fang. He's a Boarhound, but also a bloody coward.' He chuckled, shaking his head at the oblivious expression on Fang's face as he snuggled further into the blankets.
Though he felt bad about not inviting the first years inside out of the cold, he was rather busy today. Hagrid listened, nodding as he heard their request. Professor Sprout must be so proud of her students this year, as these requests kept coming.
'Reckon I've got some for yeh both. Won't be a moment.' Hagrid headed back into the hut, moving some things around. A few bats screeched overhead, annoyed their sleep was desturbed. 'Here yeh go.'
He heavily handed off a garden pot to each student, filled with fresh soil. 'Anything else yeh need?' he checked.

MJ peeked in past Hagrid (or tried to) and waved at Fang. He looked so cosy, wrapped up in his blankets, "Nice to meet you too, Fang!"
She smiled as Hagrid confirmed he would be able to get them pots and waited patiently next to Misuk. This would be the first step of their task taken care of and then they could go to the Greenhouses. Hagrid offered them a pot each and MJ took hers with a grin.
"Thanks so much, Mr Hagrid!" He had even provided them with soil! How kind! "That was all we wanted, so thank you again. I hope the rest of your day is pleasant."
Of course, she remembered now how he had rushed out of the hall with a few other staff members and hoped whatever had happened, it didn't ruin his day. She waved again to Fang and then to Hagrid, stepping away with her new pot. MJ waited for Misuk so they could make their way to the greenhouses together.
Unlike MJ, Misuk did not have that much self-constraint when it came to staying focused - it was definitely getting better, but it's a slow progress. They, too, stepped aside to let Hagrid and his dog pass, but couldn't help but stare at the large, huge dog, wondering what kind of breed it might be.
They did manage to catch MJ's glance and nod as they assumed MJ might ask - and yep, she did. There was a grin on their face now. They also approve of omitting any information that might not be benefitial to their situation, even if Hagrid probably would rather help them than deny them the pots, if Misuk gave it another thought.
"A boarhound ..." they repeated then as Hagrid answers the first question, and smiled at Fang curling up inside. "He definitely knows how to be cosy," they commented.
Their eyes sparkled a bit at the idea of their first own pot - it ... didn't sound too exciting, objectively, but it was nice. And probably not as endangered as the plants that they had tried to grow at home. "Thank you very much, Mister Hagrid," they thanked Hagrid, taking the pot.
Agreeing with MJ that there is nothing else left, they gave Hagrid a little bow, "Yes, that's all. Thank you again!" And off they went to the greenhouses.
Nova had made sure to wait a respectful amount of time after breakfast had ended. She wasn't sure where Hagrid had run off to with the other Professors, but she hoped he was home. Wrapped up in her robes and her Hufflepuff scarf up to her nose she scurried her way through the snow path leading up to Hagrid's hut.
She noticed a couple sets of small footprints and she wondered who else had come here today. Hopefully there would still be some pots left! She had been so determined for this today and if it ended up not working out she wasn't sure what she'd do. Nova put that thought in the back of her mind, she'd figure that out if it ended up happening.
Hagrid's hut was larger up close and she studied it in awe before making her way to the front door. For a moment she was slightly nervous. Hagrid had always seemed nice, but whatever had happened this morning she hoped he was okay. She'd be out of his hair quickly!
Knocking firmly with her gloved hand she tapped three times. "Mr. Hagrid? Are you home?" Maybe he had left again after whoever else had come to visit him. Leaning against the door she put her ear up to it and tried her hardest to listen.
'Did yeh forget something?' Hagrid opened the door, but realised it wasn't the students who'd recently left. 'Oh, hello. Yeh just missed some of yeh classmates.'
He opened the door fully, and glanced around for any sign of company. Looked like the Hufflepuff was on her own for now. He gave her a bright smile, suspecting he already knew what she came there for. 'Yeh after a garden pot too?' Hagrid asked, amused. 'Or is there something else I can help yeh with?'
Hagrid must have mistaken her for someone else has he opened up the door. Yet that thought quickly escaped her mind at seeing him towering before her. He was still home! This was perfect! She glanced back at the path behind her wondering which classmates she had missed. They must have just missed each other!
"I guess others had the same idea as me this morning," she said with a smile and a friendly wave to the groundskeeper. She peeked around him a moment to get a glance inside his hut before remembering her mission.
Before she could even open her mouth to ask he was already saying exactly what she was here for.
"Oh yes! I'd love a spare garden pot if you still have them. I've been wanting to grow my own plants and I was told you were the one to come to!" Clapping her hands together happily, she hoped he still had some to spare after whoever had come before her.
Hagrid smiled at the eager student, then headed into his hut to retrieve a garden pot. He'd just had time before her visit, after the others had left, to fill some pots with fresh soil in preparation. He knew school term resumed tomorrow, so it was a likely assumption that many would be rushing to finish up some tasks while they had the free time.
'Here yeh go,' he said, heavily depositing the pot into her arms. 'Are you all set now?' Hagrid asked, just in case there was something else she needed his help with.
Nova waited with a mix of excitement and as much patience as her little body could muster. As soon as Hagrid handed her the pot she nearly toppled over from the new weight but was able to catch her balance in time.
"Whoa! Thank you!" she giggled, blushing a bit from almost making a fool of herself. "Yes I think that's all I need for now. I better go find Professor Sprout! We've probably taken up enough of your morning. Thank you so much Mr. Hagrid sir!"
She would have waved but both of her hands were occupied so she just nodded in thanks to him. With the first step in her Herbology mission complete, she carefully turned around and headed back down the path. Next stop...the Greenhouse!
