An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
It had been an hour or so since Sebastian's unfortunate experience in one of the secret rooms located near the Sprial Staircase. He still didn't know what to refer to them as, but they weren't necessarily a secret anymore. His particular challenge had him try and choose a safe vial out of three, so his boiled down to luck. Were these secret rooms really luck rooms? That didn't sound right. And, the more he thought of what to call them, he reckoned they involved a degree of skill. Moving forward, he'd refer to them as skill rooms. Something about that sounded right.
Sebastian meandered the grounds, a slight headache dwindling from behind his eyes. He had rested in his dormitory to rid of the majority of the nausea and pain from the potion he had consumed, but knew that fresh air would do him better. Bash slowly strolled the populated campus, eventually shifting his direction toward the Beast Reserve. Sebastian hadn't spent much time there yet, but wanted to change that. Ever since the Braxorn attack, Shores had wanted to become much more involved with the magical creatures on Hogwarts' premises.
As he walked, a couple gems gently rattled in his robe pockets. It reminded Sebastian that he could pay the cute creatures at the Niffler Sandpit a visit. He had yet to do so, and this was the perfect opportunity to do just that. With that in mind, the Slytherin hurried toward the shallow depression in the ground just ahead, which was vastly filled with fine and Niffler-trodden sand.
Bash carefully squatted down at the edge of the pit and retrieved the gems from his pockets. And, instead of greeting the creatures with words, he simply made a series of kissy sounds, his pitch heightening in an attempt to attract them toward him. The sounds were pleasant enough, and would be loud enough to carry across the expansive area while also cutting through any background noise. Sebastian wanted to be noticed, so that the Nifflers could take his gems in exchange for a potential set of keys. He was hoping for another Bronze key in particular.

Victoria was bored, but was happy to have some free time. She spent the afternoon wandering outdoors among the greenery. It offered a little escape from all the excitement earlier in the day when a very few select students were given the opportunity to attend an afternoon tea in Hogsmeade with the Minister of Magic. What a lucky lot they were! But it begged the question: what made them more special than everyone else — but specifically her, Victoria Vargas?
She moseyed further onto the grounds, eventually catching sight of Sebastian Shores. Victoria and Sebastian were becoming fast friends this year, but that was because she wasn't spending all her time with her former bestie, Nyx Nordstrom. There was some bad blood brewing there.
The grudge that formed stemmed from Victoria being stood up over the summer, not once but twice. If Nyx didn't want to put effort into maintaining their friendship anymore, Vicky would allocate her energy toward someone else — someone that appreciated it, like Sebastian.
'Sebby!' She rushed toward him, her brunette hair whipping in the wind. 'Wait up!' Victoria picked up her pace, almost jogging now. She came up behind him at the sandpit, watching while he beckoned the creatures with some shiny gems. She had some of those gems too.
'Where have you been all afternoon?' Her question was pointed, but her tone was normal. Victoria hadn't seen him for hours, not since their most recent meal. 'I've been so bored. All everyone is talking about is tea this and tea that.' Victoria was still bitter about not being selected for the event. She lowered beside Sebastian with a groan of complaint, reaching into her robes for a shiny gem of her own and immediately offered it to any oncoming Nifflers.

Seebastian's efforts to get the attention of the nifflers worked, as several peered out from bushes or the sand itself. With more than one student present, they were quite intrigued yet some a bit too shy to approach. Two nifflers hurried over, peering at one student each.
A round, fluffy boy eagerly stared at the gems Sebastian had, though had just enough restraint not to grab them all and flee. He waited, eyes wide and desperate, for Sebastian to decide to bestow one as a gift.
A sleek niffler stared up at Victoria, wondering if she had gifts as well but wasn't able to see any clearly. She sniffed around the girl's shoes, as if that would somehow help her in the quest for answers and shiny gifts.
Sebastian was taken by the sudden voice behind him, as he turned to look over his shoulder. It was none other than Victoria Vargas. Bash had grown quite close to the girl since the start of term, the pair of them spending a decent amount of time together inside and outside lessons. He enjoyed her temperament, finding her sassy but not too sassy. Sebastian enjoyed a variety of conversation, but Vicky in particular constantly offered a gossipy dialogue, which he hadn't experienced prior to her. It was appreciated as it kept Sebastian otherwise in the know.
"I've been trying my hand at the skill rooms," he started to say, before realizing she probably had no idea what he was talking about. "You know, those locked doors around the Spiral Staircase?" he mentioned, tilting his head. She probably knew of the doors, as everyone should, but was unsure if she knew that they actually led to somewhere special.
He turned his attention to the sandpit, immediately taking notice of the cute creatures making their presence known. There were a lot of them, all in different locations. His eyes locked onto the round, fluffy boy that approached him and eagerly eyed the gems in his hands. He beamed, resisting the urge to scoop the creature up into his arms and coddle it to death. Instead Seb leaned down to reach eye-level with the creature, allowing it to see just how happy it made him. He bestowed one, single gem upon his finger and thumb for the Niffler to collect.
"Yeah, I don't get the excitement surrounding afternoon tea with the Minister," he disclosed, glancing over at Victoria again. "My grandfather served in the Wizengamot before he retired and my father followed in his footsteps—he's in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement," Sebastian said with undeniable boredom in his voice. "It's been generations since a member of my family hasn't held a significant office," he added.
"I hope to break that chain. It's all very stuffy," Sebastian muttered, his eyes shifting back toward the sandpit. "This is the type of thing that makes me happy," he stated with a smile, curling a finger toward one of the Nifflers in the pit, as if giving it a miniature wave.

'What are you going on about?' Victoria pulled a face, staring at him in confusement. She never heard of these skill rooms he apparently spent his afternoon in and Victoria prided herself on knowing everything. 'Oh, those.' She laughed in amusement, shaking her head. She didn't know people were dubbing them skill rooms, but she supposed it made sense.
Victoria was looking at Sebastian when the sleek creature startled her. She took a small step back, but remained close enough for the Niffler to sniff around her shoes. Had she stepped in something? She remembered being careful on the grounds, but there was always the possibility she did. Victoria already had a gem in her hand and reached down to offer it to the feminine critter. She assumed it was at least feminine based on its smoothness and the way it moved.
'I remember you telling me that your father wanted you to enter that line of work.' Victoria twirled the shiny gem in between her fingers, dangling it like a prize to be taken by the creature in front of her. 'You're precious, you know that? I think it's sweet that you find joy in magical creatures.' She shot him a warm smile, her toffee hair falling in her face.
Vicky always found Seb to be handsome and wanted to date him at one point. They were friends and a great pair at that — but every time she made an advance, Sebastian didn't seem interested. She eventually stopped pursuing him and settled into them being buddies.. but it bothered her to a point. In her mind, there was no way he found her unattractive, so why?
'You know how my father was a pro Quidditch player? I was considering the big leagues after graduation, but I didn't even tryout for the Slytherin team this season.' She shrugged. 'I want to focus on my writing this year, but I think if Amara gets an opportunity to change my mind, she will.' The opportunity was sure to come eventually.
'I guess I agree with you about afternoon tea. It does sound stuffy.' She nodded in slight agreement, then hesitated. 'If we're being honest, I'm just bitter. I'm annoyed that Anjay Xcalyn didn't ask me.' Victoria grinned, swiping her hair behind her ear. 'He's so cute, isn't he? And those lips? Kissable.' She giggled like a little girl, one of her crushes obvious. Vicky tried to scale her giggles back, not wanting to frighten the curious creatures.

The round niffler clutched the gem, giving Sebastian a shy look before he secured it. He crawled across the sandpit, then burrowed deep in search of a key.
Victoria's niffler clutched the gifted gem just as eagerly, hugging it for a moment before she secured it. However, she took her time wandering the sandpit as if searching for the ideal digging spot. She burrowed deep, searching for a key. She wasn't gone long, emerging with a silver key clutched in hand. She held it above her head for Victoria to take. Once free of it, she checked her gem remained secure then hurried off into some bushes.
Sebastian's niffler finally returned, empty-handed. He looked rather disappointing in himself, sitting on the sand to watch the Slytherin boy in anticipation for his reaction. He'd really wanted to find a key, but maybe Sebastian had another gem to trade for a second attempt?
"I suppose sweet is one word for it," Sebastian began, a little laugh escaping his mouth. "However, my father would beg to disagree. I think he would refer to it as nothing but a big disappointment," he admitted, his tone souring. If it wasn't clear to Victoria yet, Sebastian and his father didn't have the closest relationship. His father had expectations for Sebastian's future—a Ministry life mainly—but that wasn't the life Seb wanted for himself.
He watched as his Niffler clutched the gem from his fingers and crawled off into the sandpit. Sebastian wasn't necessarily picky in what kind of key he received, if at all, but preferred another Bronze key. He was dissatisfied with his first attempt in the skill rooms and wanted an additional opportunity to prove himself capable. Sebastian also hoped that if he were to get another room, it would be a different one. He didn't want one that heavily relied on luck.
Sebastian nodded as his friend spoke of her former plans regarding Quidditch, but her desire to focus on her writing. It appeared as though they were similar in that respect. Both of their fathers had entered a line of work that applied certain pressures on them, but like Sebastian, Victoria wanted to divert onto her own path. Sebastian wanted to encourage that mindset.
However, before he could, Victoria brought up a dreaded subject. Boys. Sebastian's face went red as a peony, the color crawling across his face like a stain. He didn't know how he could hide his obvious reaction, desperately trying to find a way to suppress his internal panic. Why was she asking him? Did she know his secret? Then, she mentioned Anjay Xcalyn and his lips. He looked down at the sand and opened his mouth with a shaky laugh, attempting to play it off.
"Anjay Xcalyn?" he repeated, his jittery tone betraying his attempt. "I'd keep that one to yourself if I were you," he started to say in warning, but didn't know if it was for Victoria's sake or his own. "If we're talking about Amara, I doubt she'd be enthusiastic about that observation," Sebastian quipped, doing his best to appear normal. It wasn't easy.
Thankfully, his round, fluffy friend returned at the right time, but was unfortunately empty-handed. Sebastian exhaled, not out of disappointment, but out of relief that something took his attention away from the conversation he was enduring. He immediately offered the adorable creature another one of his shiny gems, and in addition, a sincere smile of encouragement.

'Parents suck, don't they?' She gave him a sympathetic look. 'I love how they think they know what's best for us.' Victoria scoffed, shaking her head. 'I'm a firm believer in you knowing what's best for you.' She aimed to poke at his shoulder while speaking to better assert her point. 'Always make decisions for yourself and make sure those decisions are only influenced by things you want and not what someone wants for you.'
Victoria paused for dramatics. 'Well.. unless that someone is Amara Seabrook.' She suddenly sputtered into laughter, almost collapsing into herself. But her own amusement quickly faded when she realized she wasn't telling a lie. If Amara cornered her later and asked why she didn't tryout for Quidditch, Victoria knew it would end with her being recruited.
'Sebby, I'm not a moron.' Victoria shot him an offended glare after his recommendation of keeping her crush to herself, but it didn't last long. 'The only way I'd let that observation slip is if someone splashed Veritaserum in my pumpkin juice.' Vicky laughed, pretending to zip her mouth shut. 'My lips are sealed. Amara won't find what she isn't looking for.'
Vicky turned to notice her Niffler approaching with a key in its tiny hands. She grinned, collecting it from the sleek animal and examining it. It was beautiful, the surface shining a bright silver. She smiled at the creature and thanked it before it disappeared into a bush.
'I wish you'd get a key already.' She groaned, dropping the silver key into her pocket. She rested her chin on the heel of her hand and watched as Sebastian offered up another gem. 'If you get a silver one, we can go to the Astronomy Tower together.' If Sebastian didn't get a key this time, she wasn't going to wait around for him anymore. It was taking too long.
Sebastian's niffler was excited to receive another gem, with the noises it made highlighting that enthusiasm. He secured it, having a bit of trouble since he already had one of the gems to account for, then hurried to another spot of the sand.
Once again, he was gone a little while. Then he emerged with a bronze key clutched in hand. He offered it for Sebastian to take, looking very proud of himself. Once the key was accepted, he wandered off into some bushes.
Sebastian chuckled, nodding his head. He was amused by her reaction, already knowing she wasn't moronic. He just felt the need to remind her, given that Amara Seabrook was known to have a great distaste for Gryffindor and all that came with it—primarily those in it. He hadn't forgotten that Victoria and Amara were roommates and didn't know if the topic of boys was something discussed amongst them. Then again, he couldn't see Amara discussing something so trivial. She surely had other things on her mind, like who initiated that glitter prank?
"My little friend is trying, alright?" Seb retorted, a harassed look crossing his expression. "You're so impatient sometimes," he added in her direction. Bash then smiled for good measure, trying to soften his face. He enjoyed her company, but she could sometimes be too pushy. He had eventually learned to deal with it, knowing that Victoria meant well—at least that's what he assumed. But they were good enough friends to point out one another's flaws.
"I've yet to get a silver one. Is that where you go for those?" he asked with keen interest, hoping to learn something new. He hadn't heard about those, only knowing of the bronze-colored key's use. Sebastian was aware there was a gold-colored key as well, but knew that one was especially rare. He would make it a habit to visit the Niffler Sandpit, even if just to visit the creatures, so it was only a matter of time until he obtained all the key variants.
Seb perked up, watching as his round, fluffy friend emerged with a key in hand—a bronze one, too. He smiled big, thrilled with the outcome as it was the one he wanted. Sebastian collected the key when it was offered to him, and reached out to give the cute creature's tummy a little rub of gratitude. He took a moment to check out the key, before slipping it into his robes.
"I'll save this for another day," he mentioned, patting the key within his pocket. "Are you going to the Astronomy Tower or saving yours for later?" Sebastian asked, wondering if she still planned to go even though he hadn't acquired a Silver key. "I think I'm going to take it easy until the feast," he added, standing to full height. He had every intention of heading toward the common room after their conversation, where he'd likely read for a bit.

'Tell your little friend to look faster then.' She playfully huffed and turned her attention to the sandpit, toffee hair swaying after her. 'I wonder how deep the pit is anyway. How do they breathe when they dig deep beneath the dunes?' Victoria didn't understand how it worked but believed Sebastian would. He was into creatures and signed up for that elective class. Vicky didn't. She wanted a free period to focus on other hobbies like her writing.
'Yeah, there's a chest in the Astronomy Tower.' Vicky nodded. 'You'll know it when you see it. It's not hard to miss.' She swayed her head with a smile. 'But it can be difficult to unlock — or so I've heard.' Victoria never opened any chests herself but heard through the gossip mill that's how the silver key worked. She planned to visit the tower soon to fact check.
Her brown eyes flicked toward the Niffler when it poked out of the sandpit, key in hand. Vicky hoped it was a silver key, that way she and Seb could do something fun together. She edged closer to the sandbank for a better look, only to moan with obvious complaint. It wasn't silver.
'There goes that idea.' Victoria stood up when Sebastian did, a look of letdown on her face. 'I'll save my key for another time, maybe when you have a silver one of your own.' She flipped her hair out of her eyes and began up the hill. 'I'm going to hang around the Great Hall until dinner.' Vicky waved her hand to him before leaving. 'See you, Sebby.'
