Jacob Thatcher lay sprawled starfish-style on his back, in the middle of the Main Corridor, basking in the subdued sunlight. His eyes were closed, which was a bold move in itself, and he was fully aware that he was very much a hindrance to those coming and going the popular area. It's exactly why he'd picked it.
So, his morning (once free from homework) was great. He pranked a bunch of students, scared a random ghost he had no clue the name of or had seen before, and managed to eat an entire bag of chocolates without getting sick. Then lunch rolled around and, of course, his day only improved because food was awesome.
Now it was afternoon. He was bored as hell and couldn't track down his friends to spend time with them. He was aware there was a spell for that, but it took the fun out of everything. He'd found a way to pass the time though, enjoying his free afternoon in the warm sun while on a cold floor.
When someone accidentally (though a few Slytherins did so purposefully) kicked him or bumped him with their shoe as they tried to pass, Jacob had fun giving them a huge fright by screaming in fake pain. He was a bit put out that very few tried to help him, but that was fine. In his opinion, it was genius - a way to relax and also passively prank people. Perfect.
If only Sophia wasn't busy with Quiddich lameness. She'd have joined him, he was sure of it.
Killed by Devin Kudosen by act of the Killing Curse. June #24, RPG year 1 -- he was a 5th year Gryffindor. Jacob died to save his best friend, Luckett Langford.

Grace had tried looking in a few different places for her housemate. She'd spoken to him only a few times, and in general had not many ideas about what he was up to. The common room had been a bust, one that had taken some time to figure out, but eventually Grace had decided that maybe he was outside.
Grace looked through the Main Corridor on her way outside, and to her surprise found Jacob on the floor. That was probably why she had missed him earlier, she thought, if he had been here the whole time. She ran over to him and waved with the arm that hadn't been injured by an imp or a plant in the past 24 hours.
"Hey, Jacob," she asked, "Do you know a spell to get rid of annoying imps? Madam Pomfrey said that they taught one in fourth year." Grace was a little reluctant to reveal more of the reason why she would need such a spell. She had wanted finding the box and key to be a special thing, and maybe Jacob wouldn't want to help out.

Hearing his name in a way that didn't imply it would be followed by a swift kick to his shins, Jacob peeked open one eye. The voice was familiar but he couldn't place it until he saw the first year looking down at him.
Her question immediately caught his interest. He abruptly sat up, eyes alight with mischief and curiosity.
'Annoying imps? Now, that's not a nice way to talk about your classmates,' he joked, then gave her question proper consideration. '4th year? Blimey, you expect me to remember... wait, you mean Snuffrons? Furry things with nasty bites?' Jacob grinned, having wanted to go up against one in a less regulated environment. He'd tried to hunt some down last year but had no luck.
He'd underestimated... whatever her name was.
'Please tell me you know where one is.' He hoped she wasn't teasing him like this. 'I'd be happy to get rid of it... wait, did it hurt you?' Jacob was concerned. First years were so little, and their magical arsenal small, though he did know not to fully underestimate them as he'd still managed to cause all sorts of trouble at that age.

Grace was a little startled by Jacob sitting up so quickly, she nearly jumped, and she crossed her arms and frowned, about to declare that that was most certainly not what she had meant when she said 'annoying imps,' but Jacob's attempt to clarify made her grin.
"Those are the ones!" she said, nodding her head. She was glad that the name of the imp was not the last word she had heard, but it was helpful that she knew what they were called. Calling them annoying imps was probably just another excuse for some of the older students to make fun of her or her peers, as Jacob had.
"Yep! In the Cluttered Room." Grace gave him a thumbs up. She did wince a little when he asked if it had hurt her. "Just a little. Madam Pomfrey fixed me right up, anyways." She showed him the arm that had previously been injured.

Jacob nodded, not really caring about the healing process though had complete faith in Madam Pomfrey. He was glad she'd sought help though, as he knew the bite could be fatal otherwise - hence his initial concern. Then again, she did look fine.
'Then enough talking, let's go.' Jacob was excited, rubbing his hands together. What a great way to spend his afternoon! 'Lead the way,' he said, urging Grace (he'd finally remembered her name) to hurry up. He knew the way, as he'd used that room before to hide things or himself, but wanted to let Grace have her own moment of bravery too.
Jacob kept his wand in hand, ready for action. He tugged his hood up, just in case they rushed by any Professors or students who had it out for him.

Grace nodded, then started onwards back towards the Cluttered Room. Now that she had the additional assistance of a fifth year, this would be a little bit easier, even though she had been hoping to do this all by herself. She cheerfully led the way, hoping Jacob wouldn't ask too many questions about why she had been in the Cluttered Room in the first place.
Her own wand was tucked into her pocket. At the moment, it wasn't going to be useful, and she doubted sending water at something or lighting her wand up would help very much at the moment or even when they went into the Cluttered Room, let alone sending out a circle of fire. Either way, though, she was excited to have the chance to grab the box.
