Kat had lingered and eyed Nyx before heading out to the bathroom. “I’ll see you in a little bit,” Kat decided to say before stepping outside the classroom. She didn’t quite trust Hathmore and Kat got the sense most of the other students didn’t either. ‘This way he knows I’m expecting her,’ Kat thought protectively.
Kat tried to make it to the bathroom quickly as possible without being seen. It was almost helpful that her hair was so frazzled, it made it easier to hide her face behind her notebook in the hall way. Kat was wondering what Hathmore wanted to talk to Nyx about, she hoped her friend wasn’t in trouble for speaking her mind. ‘Of course she wouldn’t be, what teacher was petty enough to take anything a student said to heart anyway,’ Kat thought to herself. She was so wrapped up in her own thoughts she didn’t realize she had walked completely past the bathroom for a minute. ‘Where even am I?’ She thought for confused second. You would think after 5 years she would know where to go. Once Kat realized where she made a wrong turn she backtracked and headed in the right direction.
When Kat finally arrived at the Grand Bathrooms she placed her bag on the counter making a large thump. She heard what sounded like a cough and Kat scanned the room for others but didn’t see anyone. ‘I must be going crazy... or it me?’ Kat looked at herself in the mirror, “What a mess,” She said out loud. Kat knew that she had made up the thing about Amara being sick, but maybe she really was and Kat was catching whatever she had. ‘Nothing a little hair and makeup can’t fix,’ Kat thought getting her makeup kit out while waiting for Nyx to show up.

Lucas had strolled out of class, pleased with his progress but most especially just glad the whole ordeal was finally over. And no homework - bonus! He lingered back, looking busy with his books while the rest of the students left the classroom. He peered around the doorway, curious about what Hathmore needed to speak to Thomas and Nordstrom about.
Unfortunately, not even his eavesdropping skills were that good. Hearing across a whole classroom was a bit much of an ask. He needed to invest in some extendable ears, for sure.
A smirk formed as he watched Maples wander towards the Grand Bathrooms area. He had overheard her words to Nordstrom - and if there was any surefire way to overhear gossip, it was in a girl's bathroom. Luckily, he was an expert at sneaking into a stall and listening in. At least this one wasn't haunted.
Lucas casually made his way towards the bathroom, aware of his surroundings and anyone nearby but he didn't slow or falter when nearing the girls' one. Hesitation would look suspicious. He simply entered once the corridor was clear, then timed his extra sneakiness with when Maples retrieved some sort of bag or kit. His shoes were perfect for being sneaky, so he easily crept to an empty stall that had good listening reach to the main area, then shut the door.
He held the door carefully, using his fingers to buffer any noise it could make. Once secured, he locked it and put the toilet seat down. Lucas sat cross-legged on it, his bag in his lap, and eagerly awaited someone else to join Maples. Hopefully he'd hear something useful, though to a schemer like him - everything was useful.

Amara was glad she'd opted for leaving off her robes that day, as the lack of added layers made her less constricted. She tugged at her tie to loosen it, other hand raking through her dark hair as she walked quickly away from the classroom.
Her breathing heavy, she dashed into the nearest bathroom. Amara pressed a hand to the cold wall, regaining her composure for a moment and letting the cool temperature ground her as it often did in the Dungeons or Slytherin common room. She briefly covered her eyes with her hand, fighting the urge to cry or hurl or anything. Hands shaking, she exhaled a long breath and headed to the sinks.
She gripped the sink, steadying her breathing and composure. She was painfully aware she wasn't alone, which she revealed by giving Maples a warning glare. She couldn't find the energy to properly react right away. Amara bowed her head, hair splaying over her shoulders, and grumbled at her poor attempt to keep her breathing under control.
She couldn't decide if she was most annoyed at herself for being on the verge of falling apart, or the fact that Maples was there to witness it. Amara yanked her tie again, undoing it entirely. She wanted to cry or hurl, but couldn't now. Not when she wasn't alone. She hated that she wasn't alone.
Maples knew about (or was present for? Amara didn't exactly pay attention to those she hadn't deemed important) the rude awakening that morning in their dormitory, so she could surely take some sort of guess as to why Amara wasn't herself to day but still...Any information was too much. She needed to hide it, but couldn't force the ability to do that yet. It was getting worst over the years.
'Breathe one word of this and you're dead,' she growled. Her voice was shaky, but her words deadly.

Kat was in the middle of applying lipstick when Amara bursted into the bathroom. She was upset, instinctively Kat looked around to double check they were alone. Dumbfounded she stood there lips parted for a second watching Amara slow her breathing. ‘Oh crap,’ Kat thought. She’d better try to calm Amara down before someone else came in the the issue escalated quickly. Kat put her lipstick back in her bag and traded it for her wand. She moved slowly and deliberately, watching Amara out of the corner of her eyes.
Kat had to stifle a snort when Amara threatened her though. Honestly Kat thought Amara’s response to her presence was comical. Kat didn’t want Amara to think she was laughing at her. Kat straight faced put both her hands above her head feigning arrest, all while holding her wand. “Wouldn’t dream of it,” Kat said loosing her grip on her wand so it dangled above her in her hand. After a brief pause and what seemed like an intense stare down they had gone back to being individuals using the bathroom.
Kat wanted to ask if Amara was okay or if this had anything to do with her earlier this morning, but she decided against it. Thankfully Kat was an early riser and getting up after Amara kicked them out of bed wasn’t an issue for her. ‘I need to be smart about this,’ Kat thought cautiously. “What makes you think I would anyway?” Kat asked “Talk about you I mean. We sleep in the same room together I rather not get on your bad side.” A look of annoyance and deeper feelings flashed across Kat’s face, “I’m not stupid you know.” Kat said under her breath not even realizing she spoke out loud. Kat quickly tried to rectified her face back to a cheerful welcoming warm one before Amara even noticed. Kat waited to see if Amara stood silent or not, if so Kat would attempt to change the conversation. Perhaps Amara’s thoughts about Professor Hathmore and his class were safe to talk about.

Amara silently glared at Maples while she talked. She raised eyebrows at the shift in her expression after having muttered under her breath about not being stupid.
'I've no reason to think you wouldn't,' Amara grumbled. She stared in the sink again, still gripping it tight as she tried to focus. She didn't argue further, thinking there was no point in wasting the energy. She and Maples hadn't exactly interacted much outside of usual dorm, meal, or class moments. So far, Amara had no reason to care Maples even existed. Except for awkward and tense situations like this one when she'd seen too much.
'Whatever, sod off.' Amara waved her hand dismissively, wanting at least some more distance between them. 'Clearly, I'm not keep on conver-' She clasped a hand over her own mouth, trying to keep herself from wanting to cry again. At least the urge to hurl had faded somewhat.
She did warily eye the wand though. Amara was tempted to grab her own, but at that point didn't even care. Except, of course she cared, but her brain wasn't making sense. She tried to stop thinking about her father, the nightmares, and Hathmore betraying her confidence all those years ago. They were far enough into the new school term that she should have a hold on this now, yet the previous summer was one of her worst.
She let go of the sink, her hands still shaking as she messily tied back her hair so it wouldn't get in her face as much. Amara re-gripped the sink, trying to pretend Maples wasn't there but that was impossible. She should have gone to their dormitory for the privacy, though doubt she'd have made it that far without humiliating herself and losing it completely.
“Well that’s paranoia if I ever heard it,” Kat responded bluntly not even looking at Amara. Kat was busy fixing her makeup around her eyes, however she kept one hand on her wand as it laid on the counter. ‘Don’t let your guard down’ Kat told herself. Kat knew Amara could go 0 to 30 in a second, and she wanted to be prepared. Kat scoffed at the idea that today’s lesson could potentially come in handy if Amara went to far. Kat shot Amara a quick glare when she was being dismissive before going back to painting her face. Kat didn’t care if Amara wanted to talk or not, she was there first and was going to do whatever she wanted. If Amara didn’t like it she could go find some broom closet to cry in. Or better yet join Myrtle in her bathroom. And to be perfectly honest Kat could talk for the both of them.
Kat continued to talk to Amara all while looking at herself in the mirror. “We’ve been in the same house, dormitory, and classes for 5 years now. Have you ever heard me talk bad about you? Or even about you at all? I think there’s something wrong with your logic here. But if you want to brood and feel sorry for yourself go ahead.” Kat turned to look at Amara to share some wisdom and try to comfort her from what she had pieced together about her past. “Not everyone wants to hurt you, and we all have some sort of baggage. Personally I believe in doing something about it.” Kat hoped she didn’t over step but somebody had to set Amara straight. Her history might have been darker than the rest of their’s but that didn’t make her special.
They were alone so Kat wondered if Amara would actually listen to her or if she’d act all macho macho after she just witnessed her crying. ‘Stop feeling sorry for yourself, it ain’t cute.’ Kat thought about Amara as she turned back to the mirror to put on the finishing touches of her face, gripping her wand tighter just in case. Kat took a deep breath and another look at Amara as she seemed to be thinking about what she said.
“Some people just want to be nice,” Kat said holding out her concealer to Amara. Kat wondered if Amara was going to cry so much her eyes would get red. Kat knew that was the last think Amara wanted to look like. After a moment of holding it out to Amara Kat just placed it on the counter next to her. Kat knew Amara would be a powerful friend to have, maybe a little erratic but powerful none the less.
“Anyways,” Kat continued to talk deciding to try and change the subject, “You seem to know a bit about Professor Hathmore, what did you think about that class? Personally I thought it was a bit rough, and for a moment I thought you were going to run to Mardling’s aid when he flew across the room.” A sly but kind smile creeped across Kat’s face. Maybe boy talk is what Amara needed to distract her.

Amara glared at Maples, anger rising fast as she gripped her wand as if intending to do something about it - but the anger fizzled out. She shook her head, staring into the sink. She'd have lashed out by now and only resisted because it took a lot of energy, but also Maples was a Slytherin. One who she shared a dormitory with - so that gained the other girl a bit of patience for now. Though Amara was not known for her patience, regardless of the situation.
'You're an idiot,' Amara muttered. She glanced at the concealer, then ignored it. She didn't need it, and had her own supplies if it came to that. She refused to let it come to that. 'You really think being in the same house and class warrants enough familiarity and information to know if someone's trustworthy? I don't know you, Maples, not in ways that matter. Not everyone is how they appear to be. It's your logic that's flawed, not mine. Maybe not everyone wants to hurt me, but it's far safer to assume they will only to be proven wrong, than the alternative.'
Her anger was back. Maples was being insulting - acting like Amara was some brooding teenager who'd had a bad day. As if she had any idea the horrors Amara had seen and endured, the sheer danger she was often in, and...Well, that was the point - wasn't it? Maples had no idea. She had silly ideas about being just wanting to be nice and that not everyone was a danger, but she didn't know better. Not yet, anyway.
'I'm not here to waste my time talking to someone who degrades my suffering by saying I'm feeling sorry for myself. You know nothing about me.' Amara's hands finally stopped shaking. She still had her wand out though, and now she intended to use it if Maples decided to continue her way of thinking. Amara was highly offended by the words and implications. Her problems were far bigger and greater than most of her classmates could even imagine.
She had little interest in talking about Hathmore while annoyed, especially by someone she didn't consider worth her time. Nothing about Maples interested her or gave Amara the impression she had anything of value to offer. So she ignored the questions, despite being unable to stop the blush across her cheeks at the mention of her earlier consideration of rushing to Lucas' side when he was thrown onto the floor.
She shuddered, imagining how much more embarrassing it could have been had she actually done that.

”Uh-huh,” Kat grunted while listening to Amara go on. Kat nodded her head to signal she was listening even though she didn’t agree. She wanted so bad to tell Amara off. Didn’t she realize that if Kat wanted to betray Amara’s trust she could walk out that bathroom and find five people and tell them that she was in there crying? Or better yet Kat could let them know she had nightmares. I mean if Amara thought she was going to do it anyway what was stopping her? ‘... the fact that she would literally kill you,’ the thought popped into Kat’s head.
Kat was getting annoyed with Amara at this point. ‘How dare someone so closed minded call me an idiot,’ she thought. Kat at this point wanted to leave but her friend was on her way, not that Amara could sympathize with that. She didn’t have any friends. Kat wanted to try and be friends with Amara but wasn’t sure about it now. Amara seemed to think a whole lot about herself and that was it. ‘Woe is me,’ Kat thought mockingly in her mind. Kat knew one thing though, she no longer felt like sharing her concealer with Amara. ‘Let her walk around with red puffy eyes!’ Kat thought snatching the concealer of the counter next to Amara.
Kat was wondering what was taking Nyx so long, things were getting tense between Amara and Kat. If Amara didn’t want to talk then she should just leave. Kat certainly wasn’t going to put up with her attitude much longer, as soon as Nyx fixed her hair she would be leaving to do something much more interesting. ”You’re right I don’t know everything, because you won’t tell me. And if you don’t want to talk, because for whatever reason you don’t trust me, then I think you should leave. Nyx will be on her way soon and I’m sure you trust her even less.” Kat said plainly. She wasn’t trying to challenge Amara, Kat had no desire to be the Big Bad that scared off Amara Seabrook. Kat was just stating facts and warning Amara that it wouldn’t be just the two of them much longer.
Kat had half a mind to continue talking about Lucas when she noticed Amara blush but she knew the two of them weren’t at that point yet. There wasn’t really a friendship there yet. ‘If she continues to act like this her whole life she’s gonna be lonely, nobody wants to deal with that hostility.’ Kat thought almost taking pity on Amara. But Kat knew that was the last thing Amara wanted or even deserved.

Amara rolled her eyes. 'What reason could I possibly have to trust you? Respect and consideration are one thing, because yeah we've had that as dorm-mates for years, but trust? No way, I don't trust many people, Maples, and you're certainly not one of them just because get got along okay. I'm not going to open up to someone I don't know anything about. Why should I, seriously? We're associates and classmates - we're certainly not friends. Trust is earned, not given.'
It was ridiculous to her, that Maples was actually annoyed Amara didn't tell her anything about her life. It wasn't as if she showed any care or interest in learning about Amara, so why should she reveal secrets and personal information? What planet of the nice people did that girl come from? Why would she trust a stranger just because they were on good enough terms?
'I'm from a very influential and powerful pureblood family,' Amara said casually, though tensed at the thought of her father. 'Trusting the wrong people is deadly. You seem to think trust is a fickle thing granted to anyone who's nice to you, but in my life...Look, if you're offended that I don't trust someone I hardly know then that's your own bloody fault. I'm not going to tell you my secrets when we're not even friends, okay?'
The last bit of the conversation really irked her though. Amara was well-known and appointed as the "Slytherin Queen" and it was a title she took rather seriously. No way someone just suggested she be the one to leave. Did Maples own the bathroom now or something?
'Don't you dare imply that if I'm unwelcome that I should leave. Unlike you, I didn't come in here to chat and judge. If you don't like it, how about you leave? You're the one who's making a fuss and insulting me.' Amara scoffed. She untied her hair and fixed it into a neater ponytail. Her hands weren't shaking and she was breathing better, but leaving the bathroom yet was out of the question.
'Besides,' she added, concealing her smugness at getting one over on Maples. 'I actually do consider Nordstrom's company preferable to yours right now. I have a better idea of where she stands, and she doesn't have foolish notions that getting along with someone makes one owed to being trusted.' That was an assumption on her part. Amara didn't know Nyx very well either, but Maples was annoying her and being all judgey so she was certain the Ravenclaw would be more worth her time to tolerate.
"Katherine Maples–Gonzalez," Nyx sang aloud with a melodic tone, indicative of her happy state. I mean, after being named captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team, who wouldn't be? It was a coveted spot, a responsibility only the most talented could truly be awarded. Nyx hadn't fully entered the bathrooms yet, unaware that her closest friend wasn't alone. You could understand why it took her by surprise when she fully emerged into the large lavatory and noticed both her friend and Amara Seabrook having some sort of showdown. At least It appeared that way. "Seabrook," Nyx cordially added, making her way toward the girls.
Nyx's movements were casual and uninhibited as she took the unoccupied sink between the pair, unknowingly separating them and keeping them at arms length. What was going on? You could cut the tension with a knife. Nyx's eyes darted between the two Slytherin students, trying to determine how to approach the seemingly awkward situation. "So, what are we talking about? How uncivilized Professor Hathmore is as an instructor?" she asked abruptly, venom dripping from her every word. "Or, are we celebrating the fact that I'm the brand new Ravenclaw Quidditch Captain?" Nyx concluded with a simper, an uptick in her tone.
She immediately turned to flaunt her flashy new badge at Kat, the accessory similar to the one that Amara Seabrook donned as a captain, too. Nyx was certain her friend would appreciate the achievement more than Amara, given that the latter would be one of her competitors. "It's brilliant, right?" she asked, already knowing the answer. "Unfortunately, McGonagall gave the Gryffindor captaincy to that Thomas girl," Nyx continued, tracing a well–manicured fingertip across her shiny, blue pin. "I personally can't wait to show her a thing or two on the pitch. How about you?" she questioned, glancing to her right at Amara Seabrook.
‘What the hell is wrong with her?’ Kat thought about Amara. Kat knew that Amara was infamous for being rude and hard headed, but she didn’t think she’d be so delusional. From Kat’s point of view she was in the bathroom waiting for a friend to fix her hair when Amara busted in and started to break down. Then when she tried to find out what was wrong she was met with hostility. It was never Kat’s intention to offend Amara, Kat actually thought she was being cautious. However it seemed that Amara loved to argue and make a big deal over everything.
Kat had to just roll her eyes dramatically at Amara when she tried to get her to leave the bathroom. ‘What? Was Amara really trying to take her place as Nyx’s bestie.’ Kat didn’t think so. She almost laughed at the idea. ‘As if,’ Kat thought smugly.
Kat was just about to respond to Amara’s accusations of making a fuss over the fact Amara wasn’t sharing her life secrets. Or the fact that Amara wasn’t making any sort of effort to get to know Kat. ”Well, I don’t think tha-“ Kat started, but right then she heard Nyx’s melodic voice singing her name. ‘Well I guess whatever Hathmore wanted had put Nyx in a good mood.’ Kat thought. Kat’s face made a complete 180 degrees from disgust to admiration.
“Hey Nyxie!” Kat smiled excited to see her friend outside of class. She could tell something amazing had happened to her, actually Kat wasn’t sure she’d ever seen Nyx so happy at school before. Kat had to stop what she was doing and give her friend her full attention when she flashed her shiny badge. A huge smile came across Kat’s face when she heard the news. ”Oh... my... GOSH! CONGRATULATIONS NYX! And LOOK it’s polished, just like you! Kat shouted excitedly as she jumped up and down clapping her hands. Kat thought about going for a hug but she didn’t want to wrinkle Nyx’s robes, and Kat wasn’t in the right after what transpired with Amara.
”And I asked Amara what she thought about Hathmore, however apparently she’s not in the mood for talking. At least not right now, to me.” Kat said dryly. She didn’t think there was much else to say at the moment. At least not while Amara was still there. Kat would fill Nyx in later but she was pretty confident that she could figure out what was going down in that bathroom. ”Yeah... I don’t know her very well, but I guess she is a Gryffindor so...” Kat felt like something else might have happened between them. ”Why did she do something to you?” Kat asked protectively.

Amara washed her hands and cast a drying spell, then sighed in annoyance to re-tying her tie. Old habits; having to be presentable when in the company of others, even if said company were being bothersome. She didn't turn when Nordstrom entered, but eyed her through the mirror's reflection - curious what the heck had her in such a good mood.
Amara was not pleased when she found out. 'Nordstrom,' she replied just as cordially, nevertheless. 'We're certainly not celebrating the latter,' the muttered - her gaze fixed on the shiny new captain badge on the Ravenclaw's robes. She huffed, displeased in the context of gaining new competition, but supposed at least Nordstrom was a worthy enough opponent.
'Thomas was made captain?' Amara scoffed. 'First match of the season, and I'd be taking out Thomas and whatever team she throws together? Easy pickings, if you ask me.' The thought of getting to bludgeon some Gryffindors and disgrace their new captain momentarily boosted Amara's mood, though she remained less loud and confrontational as she usually did. The fact there were more people around when she wanted to be alone was not appreciated, yet apparently she'd just have to endure it or leave.
She rolled her eyes at Maples' reaction to the captaincy, despite Nordstrom being the competition. This is why nice people can't be trusted, she thought.
'Yes, exactly...Not you you.' Amara grumbled, turning to face them properly. 'Let us not forget you expected me to just share my privileged information on a whim, despite you being of no interest to me. You think I just give away details to anyone who asks? Especially with all this nonsense about wanting me to trust you when we're mere acquaintances.' She brought it up again to set the record straight with Nordstrom. Amara didn't care at all what the Ravenclaw thought, but wouldn't have Maples talking as if Amara was being standoffish for the sake of it.
Feeling spiteful and wishing Maples would leave her alone, Amara turned her attention to Nordstrom. At least she had the sense of someone more dignified and of proper upbringing, from what Amara had seen. They also shared a common dislike for Thomas, so there was some respect there.
'If you're displeased with Professor Hathmore's teaching methods after one lesson, you're going to continue to be disappointed,' she told Nordstrom. 'His methods are quite intricate, if not a bit barbaric. But he understands true power and that looks can be deceiving.' She shot Maples an annoyed look, then resumed facing the sink.
She didn't do anything, but wanted to put a bit of distance between them - still craving time alone to calm down properly. Now she had to put on more of her usual show, with two witnesses nearby. Amara briefly considered going to a stall and hiding out, but at that point of their interactions it would be difficult to do without looking as if she was trying to get away. And Amara Seabrook didn't back down, no matter how much she felt she was still at the edge of falling apart.
Nyx listened to both Kat and Amara's brief exchange, coming to the quick conclusion that an argument had definitely taken place before she arrived. She didn't know the depths of Amara Seabrook's psyche, but she knew the type of individual Katherine Maples was; Kat just wanted to get to know others, she wanted to make friends—especially if the person she was seeking out was her bunkmate. She wasn't your typical Slytherin, just as Nyx wasn't your run–of–the–mill Ravenclaw. But from what Nyx had heard of Seabrook, she wasn't an open book by any means; so someone poking and prodding her for information likely wouldn't end well, despite their good intentions. With that, Nyx understood why there was so much present hostility.
Then, despite the comments about Tiana Thomas, the subject of Professor Hathmore surfaced and it was too good an opportunity to pass up for Nyx. Unfortunately, trash–talking Thomas would have to be something saved for another day. "See, that's quite interesting to me," Nordstrom began, "Most of us don't know anything about Professor Hathmore. We don't even know where he came from. It's a massive mystery, right?" she asked, turning and nodding her head toward Kat, seeking confirmation. Nyx then shifted her attention back to Amara, "But then you spoke up at the end of class—like right now—and seemed to know a lot about him," she concluded, attempting to goad her into acknowledgement.
Nyx was aware of the irony, though. She was also seeking information from Amara Seabrook, just as Kat supposedly had moments before. But Nyx was trying to take a different approach, one filled with factual evidence. Perhaps Seabrook would respect the angle and even oblige. After all, Nyx found herself loathing the new Defense Against the Dark Arts professor and if the infamous Slytherin girl felt the same way, then they had a common enemy. "I'm assuming you already know, but Hathmore is or was affiliated with the Ministry of Magic," she said with caution, not entirely sure of her information's validity. "There was a note on his desk with their stamp; it looked dated, but still very much intact,” she continued, now looking at herself in the mirror, "It was beside a lengthy letter from Professor Snape."
Taking a moment to herself, Nyx slicked back her platinum–blonde hair, marveling at her reflection in the mirror above the sink. Her complexion was a white and illusive pink, her long lashes sweeping across her cheekbones as she peered downward to wash her hands. The pause in conversation allowed Nyx a moment to think before she spoke any further. If I don't ask, I'll never know, she thought to herself. "Why do you dislike him as much as I do, Seabrook?" Nyx finally asked. "Did he do something to you or your family?" she inquired, glancing at Amara. Nyx's eyes had a determined gleam to them, her expression focused.
Kat stood quietly as the two conversed about quidditch. Honestly the sport wasn’t her most favorite thing in the world, only because she was rotten on a broom. However Kat enjoyed watching the sport and feeling the energy in the crowd, especially when her friends were the ones playing.
Upon Amara’s retort to what Kat had said was going on in the bathroom, she just got more annoyed. ‘This chick is blowing things way out of proportion,’ Kat thought before saying plainly “Literally you came in here crying and asked what was wrong, that’s it. You’re the one who got defensive. But whatever.”
Kat went back to looking at the mirror and got her hair brush out for Nyx. A smug smile crawled across Kat’s face as Nyx started to ask questions about Amara’s life and her connection to Hathmore. ‘Let’s so you put your money where your mouth is’ Kat thought remembering how Amara said she’d rather talk to Nyx. However Kat did find it interesting that Nyx had some new details. Especially if Hathmore was involved with the Ministry and she wondered what Snape had written in his letter. There was something definitely weird going on.
Kat kept quiet as Nyx explained the situation with Hathmore and asked if Amara knew anything else. However Kat made eye contact with Nyx and motioned to her hair, hoping she would get the message. ‘I want to get the hell away from her right now, please fix my hair so we can leave soon.’ Kat nearly had a heart attack when Nyx asked about Amara’s family. That was a definite NO GO. Everyone in Slytherin knew that was not a topic Amara even wanted them thinking about. Kat’s whole body tensed up and her eyes widened, immediately her grip tighter on her wand.
Even though she was trying to solely focus her attention on Seabrook, Nyx had remembered the look Katherine shot her. It was clear that Maples wanted to leave the lavatories as soon as possible, and Nyx could understand why. After all, she didn't know how long the two Slytherin students had been going at it before her arrival—but all bets were on it being long enough.
After a momentary hesitation, Nyx diverted her eyes from her fellow captain and fetched the handled brush that her friend handed her. She took the hairbrush to Maples' hair, attempting to tame her unruly locks. This is really, really dreadful, she thought to herself, realizing it might have been a lost cause. "The voltage from those currents really did a number on your ends, Kat," Nyx lamented, as she forcibly dragged the bristles through Kat's mane. Her strokes became vigorous, unwilling to stop until it had been returned to a normal state.
The thought of using magic had obviously crossed Nyx's mind, but reaching for her wand didn't seem like the intelligent thing to do. At least not at the moment. Seabrook already appeared on edge given her argument with Katherine, and after laying a series of possibly unfavorable questions on her, Amara could see the wand retrieval as a sudden call for a duel. "There we go," Nyx boasted, watching her friend's tangles transition into natural brunette tresses. "No magic needed," she assured her, fluffing Maples' wavy hair at the mirror ahead of them.
