Please read this first -- it's hidden to save space, as this guide is referenced frequently throughout the school year:

This is an essential RP guide that helps with immersion, and provides a clear visual layout of each classroom -- as well as list key relevant information for the class. It's a useful reference whether you're a new member or have been on HAU for years. It also simplifies modding; staff don't need to describe the classroom or seating, with the exception of small details / setup changes for a specific lesson.

Includes any OOC details needed for going into that class. Information about the classroom's location can be found in the Classes section, accessed on the main page. Classroom layouts and descriptions are spoiler-tagged (aka hidden), for those who only want to see them when attending the class and not be spoiled for future ones. This guide covers the N.E.W.T classrooms, which are only used by 6th and 7th years.

Layouts are official and accurate, but try not to to take the images too literally -- such as the Herbology greenhouse is filled with vibrant plant life, but the layout seems rather plain. Available seating may not be enough for classes like Charms or DADA, but that's just for the visual aide of its setup. IC there's always enough seats, and we leave it vague in RP how many there actually are, if the class size exceeds the layout count.

Colour-coding is for our reference only; the teacher's desk isn't actually purple -- it matches the student desks or is an armchair. If student chairs are the same colour as their desk, they're standard wooden chairs. If seats are a different colour from the desk, they're actually armchairs.

For their first lesson in the class this RPG year, every classroom is new to 6th year students; having never seen them before. Some may not have even known that there are different rooms for N.E.W.T level. Even so, there's an undeniable improvement of both quality and architectural design compared to the standard classrooms -- and N.E.W.T students are entrusted with a wider range of tools, etc.

Every N.E.W.T class is elective; students taking it are always listed, which member can reference to check who's taking what and to keep track of their classes -- especially as two classes often take place at the same time.

Noise level
3 -- Normal. Chatter is allowed, as long as it's not disruptive and that work gets done. Students can also speak freely, and ongoing discussion of the lesson's topic is encouraged.

2 -- Varies. Ranges between Normal and Focused, depending on the particular topic that day.

1 -- Focused. Students must be attentive to the task at hand, as the lesson may prove dangerous otherwise. Light conversation is allowed at appropriate moments.

0 -- Quiet. Same as Focused, but the Professor insists on a quiet classroom -- either as a personal preference or for safety reasons. Student talking is minimal and in quiet tones. They must be called upon when raising their hand; all other noise levels only require you to raise it before speaking.

Potions

Moderately lit, and much colder than other parts of the castle. Has comfortable and open atmosphere to it, especially with the stone pillars, when compared to the standard classroom.

Storage area has drawers and open cabinets filled with a variety of ingredients. Workspace is where the cauldron burners are located, and a decent area for potion-making. These counter desks include drawers for different tools, and stools should be tucked away while brewing.

Noise level: 0

OOC notes: requires use of the Potion-Making feature, which may be difficult to implement if posting via mobile. Every icon must be correctly used and ordered for a successful potion at the end, to match the complex nature of the subject -- though a fewer range of icons may be used (as opposed to with the Potions Kit outside of class). This class can be very dangerous if your character isn't careful.

A difficult but rewarding class, though the instructions are stricter as the potions become more complex or dangerous. If you don't have a Potions Kit, it would be highly beneficial to get one as soon as you can if taking this class.

Professor Snape has been teaching for many years. He is attentive and strict, with the impression that there's zero room for mistakes. Many claim he has a bias towards Gryffindor students, whereas others say he has higher expectations for his own house. Opinions are mixed, but many agree he is a tough (and often harsh) teacher who doesn't hesitate to dock points or hand out detentions.

Transfiguration

There's various advanced Transfigurations or diagrams outlined on self-drawing chalkboards by the two side walls, where there's also a range of different yet empty cages. There's a beautifully hand-crafted, red rug in the middle of the room.

Noise level: 1

OOC notes: relies heavily on Free-RP. When given a task to transfigure something, you have full freedom to determine how it goes and their level of success. Given how difficult the subject is, the class task is considered complete if you've spent at least 2 posts working on it. Rather than being based on if they succeed or fail -- or achieve a partial-transfiguration, which is most common.

An expansive study of magical alteration, including the complex theories and techniques involved in the process or its origins. Includes aspects of human transfiguration and a broader range of spellcasting, as the subject becomes more advanced and intricate.

Professor McGonagall has been teaching for many years. She is rather strict, but has the respect of her students and isn't considered unreasonable; she has a similar straight-forward and no-nonsense approach as Professor Snape, but with far more patience or fair consideration.

History of Magic

Despite having no windows, this classroom is well-lit by floating lanterns, lined beautifully along the side walls. They're enchanted; they never drip wax, and their glow is atmospheric yet somehow there's zero difficulty in seeing one's parchment or making out details across the classroom.

Below the lanterns, starting at the base of the stone wall, is an entire length of a glass frame containing countless newspaper clippings from throughout history -- and a few recent ones. The atmosphere is relaxing / peaceful, but without any sleep-inducing quality once associated with the subject under Professor Binns.

Noise level: 3

OOC notes: primarily focuses on note-taking, answering questions, and exploring the subject matter from different perspectives. It not only encourages student participation, but also rewards it at a higher rate than most other classes.

A deeper exploration into the various aspects of magical history, including in-depth discussions regarding such topics. Cultivates free-thinking and a more thorough understanding of history beyond the confines of a set curriculum.

Professor Archerose started teaching last year. He has a contagious love of history, and is trying to rebuild the subject's reputation following the dull and limited curriculum offered by Professor Binns, who finally left the post after many centuries teaching it as a ghost. This classroom, combined with Professor Archerose's enthusiasm, breathes new life into the subject itself.

Defence Against the Dark Arts

The classroom is very well-lit. Two iron chandeliers hang from the ceiling. The room is comfortably open and free-range, allowing students to move around and even sit on their desks or the floor at any time, so long as they're mindful of the Training Area if a creature / otherwise is present.

The huge Training Area is not just for learning new spells or facing a particular creature. It's also used for demonstrations, and is occasionally set up to mimic a habitat / designed vivarium-style for further study.

OOC notes: relies moderately on Free-RP. Tasks and risk level vary, but you often have full freedom to determine how it goes and their level of success.

Extensive training against various dark forces and creatures, including protective warding and combative techniques. An essential part of your magical education, which increases your chances of survival within the Wizarding World as a whole. Not particularly Ministry-approved, but provides real and invaluable experience.

Professor Hathmore started teaching last year. This is a challenging class, and oftentimes very dangerous. The Professor is a non-nonsense teacher who frequently puts students on the spot or throwing them head-first into a wide range of situations. Despite his often controversial and risky methods, he is attentive to his students, and believes they'll rise to the occasion. In fact, he expects it.

Charms

A bright and beautiful room. Feels bigger than the other classrooms -- maybe it is, or it could just be the way it's set up and is so open. Various spell wand movements decorate the ceiling, depicted in the style of constellations. The walls are adorned with hardwood paneling. There's a sense of elegance throughout the classroom. The desks are a rich walnut. Chairs are as well, while are also cushioned for added comfort.

There's a freshness to the classroom, as if being outside or somewhere tropical. The Training Area is quite big; students have plenty of space to move around -- but if not needed that lesson, the area's empty.

Noise level: 2

OOC notes: often relies on a combination of Free-RP and modded outcomes -- while still allowing you to a level of freedom to choose differing results and determine their level of success.

An expansive study of various charmwork -- including deeply complex magic, but also those with everyday use, to assist you on your journey regardless of the goals and ambitions set before you. One of the most essential classes taught at Hogwarts, as spells learned in these lessons have many applications throughout your character's life.

Professor Rivera started teaching last year. She's popular among the students, and her lessons tend to have an element of interaction; many tasks are done in the form of competitive challenges or games. Charms class, under her teaching, has already established itself as a creative learning experience -- but no less serious or complex than that of DADA.

Academics

Has the design and style of a business meeting room, while still being bright and open. It's the only class where students all share the same table. The classroom is an odd one out, compared to others; even the quality is much higher, with a mature and professional feel. It's a room one might expect more from somewhere like the Academy.

Workspaces have a variety of uses and supplies, depending on the nature of the lesson -- working on an individual task, used as an art station, for crafting or planning, and so on. It's magical and versatile; adapting to what the student needs.

Noise level: unknown; students are still figuring this out.
OOC notes: Academics is exclusive to N.E.W.T level, and has no grade requirement. Covers a variety of general subjects. Exp rewards are much higher, and include a wider range of skills. Exceptionally praised on Career Files, particularly for Ministry or Academy applications.

Waiting for this class may prove hazardous, due to the corridor outside being one of Peeves' favourite pranking spots. It's rumoured to be the reason why the previous teacher, Professor Tully, dramatically quit -- being at her absolute wits end from years of fighting with Peeves, and her failed attempts to trap him.

Professor Shaydwin is new this year; not much is yet known about her or her teaching methods, though there are whispers that (given her background) she's a rather odd choice for this class.

Divination

Low lighting adds to the warm and cosiness of the room -- though some find it a bit stuffy. Armchairs are multicoloured, comfortable, and of high quality. The tablecloths are made of a non-slip material, while also having a nice touch and design to them.

Storage cabinetry is filled with teacups, crystal balls, and various supplies for a variety of Divination methods. Workspace is where kettles are boiled for tea, as part of the a Tea Leaf Reading lesson or simply to enjoy while working. There's some light snacks as well -- mainly fruit or muffins. Burning incense is mild.

After being heavily requested by students over the years, the classroom is now accessed by an iron, spiral staircase which is quite narrow -- replacing what used to be an unfolding ladder.

Students start in the Relaxation Room. It's filled with comfy seating -- beanbags, window seats, and sofas. There's also enchanted bookcases, with its contents provided by Divination students for free use or personal safe-keeping. Books can only be removed from the room by their owner. The staircase entrance is by the far wall, built into the tower. The locked Standard classroom is on the first platform, with stairs continuing up to the N.E.W.T one.

Noise level: unknown; students are still figuring this out.

OOC notes: You must own a 6-sided die, which is used for the self-modded lessons. Online dice / generators are unreliable as not truly random. We've also found that the physical action of rolling a die makes it more personal and increases immersion, as well as fairness. Also keep in mind that predictions, especially if made by the Professor, should be worked into your future RPing.

De-mystify the future, to discover more about yourself and how to make the most of the opportunities ahead -- or to avoid perils awaiting your every misstep. Exp per student is assigned a mostly random skill, providing an opportunity to make progress in all areas.

Professor Traddles is new this year; not much is yet known about him or his teaching methods.

Herbology

A lush and vibrant greenhouse, lined with counters. Some counter areas are clear and as added space during lessons, if needed, and other areas have more pots and tools -- or thriving magical plants that are best left alone. Plants present in this greenhouse tend to alternate all the time. Taking Herbology at N.E.W.T level is the first year without the familiar three plants that were always around, including the noticeable absence of the ever-popular Timbre Tulips.

Workspaces are for tending to pots, or whatever the class task may be for that lesson. The Professor also has a workspace, used for demonstrations and to safely present certain plants.

There's a big plant in the corner, near the door -- quite lively and responsive. It seems to be a permanent resident yet not much is known about it, as term has just started. Its flower moves and behaves like an open jaw. There's a nametag on its rather fancy pot: "Big Tooth"; an actual name, not the type of plant it is.

A deeper understanding of magical plants and associated gardening techniques, such as dangerous pests or environmental care. If you don't have a Herbology Kit, it would be highly beneficial to get one as soon as you can if taking this class.

Professor Sprout has been teaching for many years. She can be firm and non-nonsense when it comes to the subject matter, but relaxed or whimsical when interacting with her students or tending to non-plant matters. She is widely beloved by members of her own house, as well as others -- with a consistent manner of treating them equally and as capable individuals. But expect to be called out for any foolish plant-handling or a lack of common sense.
