As August arrived, the Doren Estate was rather quiet.
Mr and Mrs Doren liked the quiet and orderly atmosphere, but in their absence this was a very different kind of silence. It was a stillness that felt new and strange, almost like a sleeping beast yet to be disturbed.
There was a light rain the night before, so the lush lawn was rather damp with morning dew. Gilbert could be seen inspecting the garden path near the East Wing -- so lost in his task that he didn't really acknowledge the start of a new day or the strange quiet blanketing the estate.
Meanwhile, Dodry, the remaining Doren house-elf, had prepared the Doren children a variety of French breakfast items and some British ones as well. It was far more food than they needed, but it'd been a rough week or so for them since their parents were taken to Azkaban to await trial.
But any effect of a familiar meal was tampered with by the rule of them having to dress more casually while at home -- even letting their hair down, if they wished. Their seats at the table were kept the same, but their routines were so different. They had to spend some time outside, time with each other, and could choose how to spend the rest as there were no tutors or set schedules.
Dodry had called each Doren to the dining table for breakfast. An official-looking owl flew to the nearest spot to perch, then stuck out its talon -- and waited only as long as it took for the three envelopes to be detached, before it stretched elegant wings and took flight again. It was a speck in the sky before anything was opened.

Please note that the new school year will begin on September the first. The Hogwarts Express will leave from King's Cross Station, platform nine and three quarters, and eleven o'clock.
A list of books for the next year is enclosed.

The list of course books was much shorted than last year -- only requiring a tense-sounding textbook for Defence Against the Dark Arts (presumably), and the Grade Two standard spellbook. There was nothing else noted, except the additional requirement of a pair of earmuffs.

The list of course books was brief -- requiring a complicated-sounding textbook for Defence Against the Dark Arts (presumably), and the Grade Five standard spellbook. There were two other books listed, but were specified to only be for those attending Care of Magical Creatures or Divination.
The Hogsmeade permission slip was included, as stated. Ideally, it would be signed before term began but really could be done at any point -- though of course, one can't visit Hogsmeade without it. Apparently, even if they'd had permission in the past.

Please note that the new school year will begin on September the first. The Hogwarts Express will leave from King's Cross Station, platform nine and three quarters, and eleven o'clock.
Sixth-years are permitted to regularly visit the village of Hogsmeade. Due to recent events regarding Azkaban, we require a renewal of this permission. Additionally, in the case of one or more NEWT-level classes requiring an educational experience outside the Hogwarts grounds, Field Trip permission is also required. Please give the enclosed permission forms to your parent or guardian to sign.
Also, sixth-years can take part in Apparition lessons for a fee (after the introductory lesson) of twelve Galleons.
Moreover, you have been chosen Slytherin Prefect. Congratulations!
A list of books for the next year is enclosed.

The list of course books hadn't been this long since first year. There was one for each class, which were specified to only be for those attending them. Almost each one had the word "advanced" in the title; it was clear the magic learned in NEWT year lived up to those expectations.
The Hogsmeade permission slip was included, as stated. Ideally, it would be signed before term began but really could be done at any point -- though of course, one can't visit Hogsmeade without it. Apparently, even if they'd had permission in the past. The Field Trip permission slip was also there, as stated. It was rather vague on what sort of trips were necessary, but it was far less optional than the Hogsmeade one.
Finally, out slipped the shiny new "Prefect" badge. There was a weight to it -- not physically, but the responsibility and authority it represented.
Charlotte had been able to adjust well to the new rule of dressing casually. During her first year at Hogwarts, she had slowly begun to do that anyway, but now it was almost more expected of her. Today, she wore some very casual clothing, a cute shirt and shorts, with some shoes that matched.
She was brushing down a wrinkle when she waled into the dining room. A smile pulled at her face a little while she looked around. She turned her head in time to see the owl perched and went to retrieve her own envelope. She opened it casually and began to read it while she sat down.
"Do you think we can go and get out supplies today?" Charlotte asked, though it wasn't to anyone in particular. She felt her heart leap at the idea of seeing her friends, MJ or maybe some of her other friends from the train ride home.

Elizabeth was frustrated by the way order was no longer being maintained. Having her hair down was one thing, but instituted casualness was something she couldn't really tolerate, especially because it wasn't her parents who were giving the rules. Having no tutors was another thing. Elizabeth felt that she would be behind already when she arrived at Hogwarts, especially given her grades. Going into sixth year, she knew she had to aim for all O's to make up for the mistakes of fifth year.
Elizabeth had been spending most of her free time with a book in hand, though occasionally she had been looking in on William and Charlotte to see what they were doing. With their parents gone and Gilbert clearly not an excellent substitute, Elizabeth wanted to make sure her siblings were benefitting from what they had left on the estate.
Elizabeth read over her Hogwarts letter, and was quite pleased (not to mention relieved) that she would be returning as a Prefect this year. The permission forms were less appealing. She did not particularly want Dae-hyun Tolliver to be signing it instead of their parents, but she supposed it would be a must, especially if it was for a class.
"I'll send an owl to...our guardian." Elizabeth wasn't sure exactly how she was supposed to refer to him, but that was better than nothing. She did not want Gilbert taking her shopping, whether he was their uncle or not. "But it would be a good idea. Perhaps we can get a head start on our studies by reading the books a little more. Besides, I believe both William and I need to have permission slips signed."
Elizabeth stood from the table, feeling the slightest bit rebellious given that she had not entirely finished her grapefruit. She left the room and returned with parchment, ink, and a quill.
Mr. Tolliver,
My siblings and I have just received our Hogwarts letters, including which supplies are necessary and permission forms for Hogsmeade and NEWT-level field trips. We would appreciate it if you could accompany us to Diagon Alley to get our supplies as well as sign our permission forms.
Gratefully, Elizabeth Doren
When she was finished with the letter, she attempted to show it to both Charlotte and William for approval.
Dodry wandered into the room, dusting himself off from some sort of sparkly gold powder. He felt his pointy ears, as if to check they were still there, then inspected the breakfast to ensure they still had everything they needed.
Ever-keen to be useful, he glanced at the eldest and youngest two Dorens -- wary to interrupt any sort of conversation, but deemed it worth the risk.
'Is you needing anything from Dodry?' he asked, alert and energetic despite his tired or unimpressed manner of speaking.
Charlotte glanced at her sister when she spoke, barely looking at the letter that her sister was sending to the Guardian, Mr. Tolliver. He was a nice man and she liked him... Certainly better than her parents were! Ever since her parents were gone, she had finally felt a little... Free? Or maybe it was just warm?
Sure, she still looked at books and read, but she was enjoying the time outside without the fear of the dogs. As Elizabeth spoke about getting a start on their studies, Charlotte looked up at her with little expression.
"Do you not want to see any of your friends? I just hope MJ is there," Charlotte said as she picked up something else to eat and then sat up a little more. It had been so long since she had seen her friend and they hadn't been able to get any letters. Was MJ upset that Charlotte hadn't sent anything? Maybe she should have asked about sending letters?
She would have to apologize if she saw her at Diagon Alley.
"Maybe I can ask Mr... Oh... Since he is our Uncle, maybe I could call him Uncle Gilbert now?" Charlotte said, though mostly to herself, it would have been easily heard by her brother and sister. "Maybe Uncle Gilbert could take us to Diagon Alley?" It felt weird but also made her heart jump a little.
Charlotte looked over at the house-elf that entered the room and watched him for a moment. At the question, she thought about it and then looked over at him.
"Can you ask Mr... I mean... Uncle Gilbert... to come here? I have a question for him!" Charlotte said in a bit of an excited tone.
'Master Gilbert is tending to the gardens,' Dodry replied. 'He is not allowed here, according to Mistress' rules. I is letting him know you wish to speak with him, if you wish you attend in the gardens?' he said, unsure how to help without rule-breaking.
The elf eyed Elizabeth's letter, unable to resist.
'Is you needing Dodry to owl something?' he asked, a bit hesitantly as if expecting to anger them for such a suggestion. 'I is still needing to go beyond the boundary, even if Mistress is not here to enforce the restraint.'

"We can see our friends when we visit Diagon Alley to pick up the books." Elizabeth said, as though she had friends that she was going to see.
Elizabeth's eyes widened in horror. Why would her younger sister be so immediately taken with the idea of having an uncle? Their parents had to have a good reason for not wanting him to be around them in that capacity, and Elizabeth was about to remind Charlotte of this when Dodry interrupted. She stewed in her frustration for a little, deeply uncomfortable with her lack of control over the current situation.
"You can speak to Gilbert if you wish to," Elizabeth addressed Charlotte, "But I would much rather have Mr. Tolliver accompany us. Besides, I am certain that Gilbert will be busy with the gardens."
Elizabeth had no idea of which parts of the gardens needed tending to, but that was where she was most familiar with Gilbert being, so that was where she pictured him.
"Yes, Dodry, please send this letter to Dae-hyun Tolliver." Elizabeth handed the house elf the letter and then turned to her sister, trying to figure out how to explain things to her. Maybe it was just difficult because Charlotte was young. Or perhaps she had read too much fiction? Maybe her friends were making the idea more exciting that it truly was.
She dropped her voice so that Dodry wasn't listening in to closely, though she wasn't too bothered. It was mostly just so Charlotte knew how serious Elizabeth was being about the situation. "I am not entirely comfortable with Gilbert, and I worry about you. I am aware that it is quite interesting to have discovered this connection, but I am also equally aware of the fact that our parents must have had some reason to hide it."
Elizabeth cleared her throat and adjusted her hair, not used to it being down. "If we really must have Gilbert accompany us, I would at least like to be certain that we are not entirely alone."
"Oh, I see... Then, I will go see him in the gardens after breakfast," Charlotte said as she took another pastry from the table. She was quite content at the moment and felt that since her parents had been taken away, she had more of an appetite. No longer was she having to worry about impressing them. At least for a time she could be relaxed... The worry of them returning was there though, in the back of her mind and she shivered at the thought while she sat quietly.
"I suppose Mr. Tolliver would be okay to come..." The idea of disheartening to Charlotte, but she sat quietly as her sister finished with Dodry and then brought her attention to her. She expressed her discomfort and Charlotte looked at her with confusion and maybe a little bit of anger.
"It was probably because they are just mean... I hope I never see them again," she said boldly before she took another sip of her juice that she had poured. "They do not even care for us..." Charlotte said as she recalled the one time she was easily forgotten when they had a party. It was during a time when William and Elizabeth were gone. It had been the only happy day she could recently recall while at this house.
For a time, she felt loved and care for by them. Then, they dropped her like she was trash and forgot all about her. She never wanted to see them again. She stood from her place and brushed off her casual clothing, checking for anything that had dropped on her at any point.
"I am going to see him," she said bluntly before she left through the doors. She took her time walking to the gardens and arrived not long after she left Breakfast. As she entered, she looked about and smiled at the beauty of the garden.
"Um... Mr..." Should she call him uncle or mister when she spoke to him. She had never actually called him Uncle while he was there in person. "Gilbert?"
Dodry nodded, accepting the letter from Elizabeth. He then vanished on the spot.
--
Gilbert was busy in one of the front gardens, using magic to repair a clay pot and its soil -- having dropped it a moment earlier while trying to juggle one too many items. There was nothing growing in it yet, thankfully. He set the pot aside, then offered Charlotte a wave.
'Good morning,' he said, adjusting his hat to keep the sun out of his face. 'How are you today?'
--
'It is done,' Dodry said, appearing beside Elizabeth without warning. 'Dae-hyun Tolliver is wishing to accompany you to Diagon Alley today, if you is wanting to go. He will arrive soon to collect either each of you or some of you and the other's shopping list.'
He watched her intently, awaiting any further instruction of if she needed anything else. Or if William needed anything from Dodry too.

Elizabeth couldn't believe the words Charlotte was saying. Her parents were mean? How childish of her. Was a professor mean for deducting house points from misbehaving students? Their parents may have been strict, but Elizabeth had to believe that they had truly cared for them. Why else would they spend so much money on tutors? Perhaps Elizabeth would have to show Charlotte the dress that she had received from their parents.
If their parents had ever been mean, it was the circumstances. The incident with her mother demanding that Elizabeth go to Azkaban was the one of the only situations that Elizabeth could point to where she thought her parents had been to harsh. And the words of her father--"You were enough"--Elizabeth knew that they loved her, even if they showed it in a different way.
She was not able to explain all of that to Charlotte before she ran off, and soon afterwards Dodry reappeared. Elizabeth startled, already unsettled by the events of the summer. Perhaps she should train herself to be a bit more calm.
"Thank you, Dodry. Today is a good time to go. I'll be out waiting with Charlotte in the garden."
She collected her things, including the Prefect badge. The type of responsibility she was growing used to. She walked the way her sister had gone. Elizabeth was not going to let her sister be alone with a man her mother hadn't trusted enough to give custody to. She stood at a bit of a distance, watching Gilbert and Charlotte with concern.
Why couldn't things just stay the same? The way she was used to them being? She missed her schedule, and she missed her tutors, and most of all, she missed her parents.
There he was! Charlotte saw him mending the pot and she brought herself over to him. When he offered his good morning, she smiled and took a quick look around.
"I came to show you," she offered her Hogwarts Letter to him. "It is our letters and supply list," she went on to explain before she sat down on a near by stool.
"Elizabeth sent a letter to Mr. Tolliver about going today... she said you were likely too busy, but I wanted to ask if you would come too," she asked as her fingers found some fabric of her shirt, which was loose fitting and wrinkled a little over the top of her legs. She felt nervous, though she didn't know why.
She hadn't seen Elizabeth join them, as her back was to the entrance she had come from.
Adapting to the new rules was not as easy as it sounded. A lot of time, William planned to wear formal before realizing he was supposed to wear casual. He chose a simple black t-shirt with a small pattern. He chooses not to make any changes to his usual hairstyle. Changing to clothes at the last moment made him a little late for breakfast.
William was also struggling with frequent changes in routine. His whole life, William had learned that things should happen at a proper time, and he had tried to follow this rule in school also by having meals or studying at the proper time. When the routine was not there at home, it felt weird. It was almost like he had not been at his home but at some strange place.
Another new thing was the option to spend time however he wanted. William had the habit of getting a timetable from his tutors, but it was not the case now. Probably his four years at Hogwarts trained him to make his own timetable. So, it was not that hard except that he had to reserve some time for two activities; to go out and spend time with his sisters. Even though these two things weren't teaching him anything, with every passing day, he learned new things about his sisters.
Arriving at the breakfast table, he went to sit at his regular seat. He was glad that at least there was one thing that remained unchanged. It was hard to confess, but he was almost expecting his mother's angry glare for arriving late at the breakfast table, but it didn't happen.
"Good morning Charlotte, Elizabeth." He said in a dull voice.
William collected his letter from the owl and read it slowly. The permission slip was the thing he was worried about. When Elizabeth mentioned sending the letter to their guardian, it felt weird. He knew she was talking about Dae-hyun Tolliver, and William was not happy with the idea. It wasn't like they had any other option if they wanted to get permission for Hogsmeade.
This letter did raise William's hope. He hoped returning to school would be much better than living in a dysfunctional home. The idea of going to get supplies was good, and when Elizabeth suggested heading start on our studies, it made him even more excited.
Willam read the letter written by Elizabeth. The letter contained all the important details without useless chitchats. "Perfect." He answered.
When Charlotte mentioned meeting friends, he wondered whom he looked forward to meeting, maybe some of his classmates. When Charlotte called Gilbert as uncle, it was very uncomfortable. No matter what anyone would say, suddenly finding out that their gardener is their uncle was not easy, and it would take some time for him to accept this.
Since he found that Gilbert was his uncle, it was hard for him to be around him, and he didn't want this trip to be a situation like that. When Elizabeth tried to explain to Charlotte, William remain silent and let her handle the situation. Besides, he had no idea how to explain this without making her sad.
Elizabeth's way didn't go as well as they would want. Charlotte got angry and even said that she hoped she would never see them again. It made William socked and unable to say a word. Soon, she went out, and he couldn't do anything.
"She didn't mean it." He said after a weird amount of silence in the room.
Dodry delivered the letter, and they could go to Diagon Alley today, which was fine. After finishing breakfast, they went to the garden and noticed Charlotte and Gilbert. Nowadays, he didn't feel comfortable around Gilbert, but Charlotte was very close to him. Charlotte would want to go with Gilbert. Mr. Tolliver was not his first choice either but given the circumstances, he would be the better option.
"If we couldn't convince her, then maybe we can ask Gilbert to accompany us with Mr. Tolliver," He said to Elizabeth, obviously being away from Charlotte's earshot. He wasn't looking forward to spending time with Gilbert after knowing the truth, but couldn't think of any other solution.

'Oh, you wanted to show me?' Gilbert put down his tools and wiped his gloves on his overalls before sighing in disappointment of himself -- and thus removed his gloves, revealing clean hands. 'Let's see then...'
He had no idea what he was supposed to be seeing or thinking about. Charlotte wanted to show him her Hogwarts letter, so he was going to look at her Hogwarts letter. It was the usual stuff, reminding of the date and time back to school. Her supply list was very short, which would make for an easy enough task to complete.
Grade two. Merlin, she was twelve already. Gilbert gave Charlotte a smile, remembering when she was small enough to sit in his wheelbarrow while he worked.
'I certainly appreciate the consideration.' He nodded, pulling his gloves back on. 'But Tolliver seems better equipped for such a trip, if that's all right? I'd love to hear all about it when you get back, of course. I have so much gardening to do, and I'm afraid Diagon Alley is far too much activity for me. I would just embarrass us.'
Hoping that won't make her too sad, Gilbert requested one of the new rose pots in hope of distracting her. He even had her tap one of the watering cans with her wand, for a bit of fun of activating its self-watering magic and watching it float around in search of plants to tend to.
It wasn't long before he noticed a figure approaching the house. Sighing, Gilbert gave Charlotte a nudge. It was Dae-hyun Tolliver, no doubt having arrived to take them on their requested shopping trip.
Dae-hyun remained in the lobby, while Dodry (per request) popped around the Estate to track down each Doren child and let them know they'll be leaving for Diagon Alley in a moment -- and to meet Tolliver in the lobby when they were ready to go.
Charlotte couldn't help but smile in a bit of amusement when he wiped himself off with his gloves. Why she found it rather funny was unknown to her, but he gave her his full attention. Why couldn't her father give her attention like this? Or mother? They didn't want to give them any form of attention. But, Gilbert was willing to stop and look at the letter with her. When he smile at her, it made her feel warm inside.
But, then he turned down the offer to come with them and she felt a little sad by it all. Did he care about appearance too? It seemed everyone in the family did and after seeing how others at school were... Did it really matter all that much how one appeared to others? Was it so awful to just... Be yourself?
Then, he involved her in helping with the garden and she found the ability to just tap her wand to make the can water was quite enjoyable. She was smiling while she helped him, forgetting the want to go to Diagon Alley. BUt, then he nudged her and he looked towards the figure herself.
"Oh... Well... Can I help you again... Um..." She felt her cheeks turn red as she was about to call him Mr. Gilbert again. Inside, this was a struggle... "Do... Do you still wish me to call you Mr. Gilbert?" She hoped that he would understand that she thought maybe another term would be better for him. But, everything left her so very confused from the summer.
Once he told her what he wanted her to call him or if he okayed her to call him what she wanted to... She would head to the Lobby to go with her siblings to Diagon Alley.

Elizabeth watched carefully with William as Charlotte interacted with the gardener. Watering plants? That was something they could do at school. Perhaps Charlotte was partial to Herbology, and this was the source of her desire for some sort of connection with Gilbert. Elizabeth could admire a desire to pursue a subject that one enjoyed. She was already considering seeking out a Charms tutor.
She waited for Charlotte to finish up her conversation with Gilbert, noting that Dae-hyun Tolliver had already arrived. She had her letter and permission slips already, but she wanted to walk there all together, or at least make sure that Charlotte actually came with them. Elizabeth did not want her to feel alone, especially not when Elizabeth and William were easily available, given that they didn't have schedules now.
