Kassia took a break from her studying to attempt another room in the Spiral Tower. She had her bronze key ready in her hand as she ascended the steps. She had succeeded in the last two- perhaps she would do so a third time. At any rate, if she had to read another word she feared she would snap. Kassia approached a door at random, inserting her key into the lock and opening it up.
The room was well-lit by windows enchanted to display a sunny afternoon, and its temperature was comfortable. There was a huge pond in the middle -- its waters dark and deep, with a foreboding sense of the unknown. Beside it were two wooden buckets; one white, and one black.
A plaque reads:
"Beneath the waters, and among the kelp, is a bed of stones. Grab one and resurface, before those in slumber awaken to drag you down a watery grave. Before you are two buckets, where you must toss your treasure -- for one you win, the other you lose. Be warned, brave adventurer, as magic cannot help you here."
How to Play
The pond is very deep and almost impossible to see through. Your character can attempt magic, but nothing will happen; this room's enchanted so magic can't be used.
Your character must swim to the bottom of the pond, which is full of kelp and tricky to navigate without getting tangled. They can resurface for air and keep trying, if needed. Free-RP is allowed.
With a stone in hand, your character then attempts to swim back to the surface. A mod will determine how that goes (50 / 50 chance) -- if you're all clear or if something attacks. If attacked, you can free-RP how it's resolved.
Once leaving the pond, toss the stone into either the black (odd) or white (even) bucket. A mod will roll a die to determine which bucket is the winner. There is always a 50 / 50 chance of winning or losing this mini-game.
Winning earns 200 exp to their Marauder skill, and 20 exp to every other skill.
Although playing a mini-game, this is still an RP-thread. We strongly encourage immersing your character in this experience and challenge, as these threads are also designed for character development.
Kassia opened the door and was stunned to discover the exact same pond she had braved just the other day. Some of her sense of wonder disappeared at being faced with the same task. She put her hands on her hips and glared at the room. This again? Why couldn't she have a nice charms task or something like that?
At least she knew what to do. Kassia resolutely removed her outer layers and placed her hair in a shower cap. She did check the plaque just in case something was different, but even the buckets were the same colour as before. Kassia wondered if she would go for the same bucket again.
She dipped her toes into the warm water before fully submerging herself. Taking a huge gasp, Kassia pulled her way back down the kelp towards the bed of stones on the bottom. Actually, it was nice to deal with a threat she was used to. Snatching up a stone, she began to float back up to the surface.
The water had a chill to it, not enough to be uncomfortable but enough for Kassia to not want to linger much longer than need be. It didn't help that it was inky dark too, which hindered her ability to see anything while under.
And then, there, in the back of her mind. That unnerving feeling that she couldn't possibly be alone in the water.
Nothing happened as she descended or when she grabbed the stone. She could almost be fooled into thinking she was home free, the water's surface mere inches away now.
But maybe it was the cold that tricked her into missing the icy digits that wrapped themselves around her ankle. She would be suddenly anchored into place, unable to swim upwards.
Kassia felt it was much colder this time around. That should have been foreshadowing enough, but she focussed on getting back to the air above her and not on what was beneath. But just as the light above came deceptively close, Kassia felt a hand around her ankle.
Her body jerked reflexively, and she looked down. Bubbles escaped her mouth. It was very much not a piece of kelp holding her. She pulled out her wand, lungs screaming for air. But still, desperation forced her to behave as needed. She pointed her wand at the shadowy creature who had grabbed her.
Kassia attempted to use her wand but nothing happened. It proved the warning on the plaque was true - magic wouldn't help her here.
Whatever had a hold of her ankle wasn't scared away by her feeble attempt to ward it off. Its grip didn't loosen and Kassia noticed she was sinking.
Slowly but surely.
But she had a choice.
She could use the rock in her hand to fend off whatever it was and then lose it, which would make her start over. Or she could hold on tight to it and find another way to escape.
Nothing happened. More bubbles poured out of Kassia's mouth. She remembered the warning on the plaque- no magic could be used. She was enraged. No magic in herbology, potions, now here- what the hell was the point of being a witch then? Wasn't this sort of situation exactly what magic was for?
Something else bubbled up in Kassia then, and she was almost gleeful. It was rare she got to let the constant anger out of her. Reaching down with her dominant hand, she grasped two icy fingers in her hands. Then she pulled them back in the opposite direction they were supposed to bend, hoping she could hear the sickening snap and crunch of bone.
Whatever Kassia had grabbed pulled away very quickly and let her go. She would have no real idea if she truly hurt it but she was free now. It escaped back into the darkness.
Kassia still had her stone and just had to exit the water and decide which bucket to choose.
Kassia would have glowered at the retreating figure if she'd had the air to do it. She wasn't going to cry and scream like a little girl. But she was just desperate to reach the surface now, and kicked violently. She broke through the water with a choking gasp, lungs burning. She hauled herself out onto the stone floor and lay there for a moment, breathing hard.
The stone remained clutched in Kassia's left hand. She wearily sat up once she had regained her composure. She glanced back at the two buckets, not remembering which one she chose last time. Not that it mattered. She pulled off her hair cap, and threw the stone into the white bucket.
Kassia's stone dropped into the bucket with a loud clang that seemed to echo around her ominously. It was loud enough to force Kassia to cover her ears but nothing else happened.
Even after all her effort, she had nothing to show to for it. The door clicked open and invited her to leave.
