Saoirse had never been to the spiral tower before. As she ascended the final steps of the staircase, she found herself intimidated by the vast array of doors before her. None of them seemed to stand out to her in any way. After a moment's hovering, she approached one at random and placed a bronze key in the lock. To her surprise, it clicked and opened easily.
It was jarring, to leave a stone tower through a previously-locked door -- only to be surrounded by sunshine (enchanted ceiling) and an abundance of nature. If there were walls, they were covered in vines with colourful leaves. The floor remained stone, but everywhere in the massive room was green and lush with life.
There were shelves of small seedlings and flowers, then pots in the corners that were as big as a chair. It was impossible, no matter one's knowledge, to name or categorise everything. In was almost a sensory overload, yet smelled sweetly fresh.
The plants were healthy and kept to themselves, except a row of large pots in the middle of the room. Sprouting from the damp soil were huge succulents with gold thorns resembling fangs. They wriggled, aware of the company -- or hungry for it. Wedged in the center of each, surrounded by sharp thorns / fangs, was a glass box containing a viable yet difficult-to-obtain ingredient: fish eye.
A plaque reads:
"Beware: one Alowort bites."
How to Play
Choose an Alowort to retrieve the ingredient container from. There's a 1 / 3 chance it's the biter. The numbers are for your reference only; they don't appear to your character.
If it's a safe one, pick another -- which has a 1 / 2 chance of being the biter.
Don't get bitten, and you win.
Winning earns 200 exp to their Herbology skill, 20 exp to every other skill, and 2 Fish Eyes (X ingredient).
Although playing a mini-game, this is still an RP-thread. We strongly encourage immersing your character in this experience and challenge, as these threads are also designed for character development.
Saoirse shielded her eyes from the enchanted light and looked on in wonder at the room before her. More plants than anyone except maybe Madam Sprout could name, every possible shade of green. What sort of wonders like this existed in other places? Maybe under the sea, where wizards had probably not yet gone before.
She wandered into the room, observing the variety of flora before her. Eventually her eye was drawn to the centerpiece of the room- three fanged succulents that each carried a small vial. Saoirse approached the plants warily, reading the plaque. So, she had to choose one of three- and risk being bit.
Saoirse pulled her sleeves farther down. Not that it mattered, but it made her feel better. How strange that this was based on chance alone. None of the plants looked different enough to discern between, at least not to her untrained eyes. She might as well reach for plant number one. Saoirse hesitated, then reached in to snatch the vial.
The Alowort reacted when Saoirse took the container from it. It seemed to vibrate, as if glad to be free of its burden. It stretched out and relaxed.
Unfortunately for Saoirse, the container remained sealed and she wasn't able to retrieve the ingredient from it - yet.
The remaining two Alowort remained impassive, unconcerned about Saoirse. It was her choice which one she would attempt to take the glass box from next without being able to tell which one could be the biter.
Saoirse sighed with relief as she managed to safely extricate the glass vial. The fish eye remained locked away. Still holding it in one hand, Saoirse went for the third Alowort. She placed her left hand in the center, willing the thing not to bite her.
Both Alowort remained still as they waited for Saoirse to make her choice.
Then the chosen Alowort wriggled like the first one but suddenly closed around her hand, biting into her skin. The fang-like thorns would leave puncture like marks, angry red. They wouldn't fade for the rest of the evening - a reminder of her bad choice but it wouldn't require medical attention.
In her panic, she would have dropped the first box she had retrieved before the Alowort released her hand. The other boxes disappeared and Saoirse was left with nothing to show for her efforts.
Saoirse had only half a chance of it being the correct plant. It wasn't. She yelped as the plant bit into her, causing her to drop and shatter the other vial she was holding. Saoirse pulled back, looking at her hand in terror. To her surprise, it had felt a lot worse than it was. Only puncture marks that oozed a bit of blood. She had been expecting those thorns to rip into her like frenzied sharks.
She shrugged. She had other keys, so better luck next time. This still felt simple compared to all the trials she had just faced. Saoirse left the room and headed back to her dormitory, not looking forward to studying.
