Once Transfiguration was done, Thorne practically sprinted from the classroom, uncharacteristically fast. He'd finally harvested some new plants earlier in the morning, which meant he was one (1!) ingredient away from being able to turn in his potions kit. The school year winding down meant, well, he wouldn't have a chance this year but...
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to practice independently next year?
The rain wasn't exactly pleasant, but the weather was warm enough that at least it didn't chill him to the bone as he made the long trek around the lake towards the grassy planes around the big beech tree. He'd loved that tree since the first day here - it reminded him of all the massive old trees growing around his home.
So it seemed like the best place to start, even if it wasn't the most convenient.
Once he arrived in the stretch of flat, rain-dewy grass, he hung his satchel on a low branch so it would stay a bit dryer than if he kept it on, and started looking around. It was so damp, after all, surely there had to be mushrooms or toadstools or something useful around here somewhere!

The rain certainly made visibility something of a struggle, the flat sheets of rain obscuring how far Thorne could see. It didn't help that his glasses were quickly spotted with rain drops.
And thanks to the rain, the ground was beginning to squelch under his feet. The grass was turning muddy and the mud... Well, the closer someone would get to the lake, the more bogged down they would begin to feel. There was no danger of getting stuck but it was possible to lose a shoe if it wasn't tied well enough!
Unfortunately for Thorne all of this also meant the Mud Toadstools had great camouflage amongst the grass. He would have to take his time and check the really muddy areas carefully. There was a chance he would need to get a bit dirty but surely that would be worth it?

He should have done this earlier, or gone with something easy that he could get inside! But Thorne was....slowly realizing that while things didn't always go exactly how he was planning, he was stubborn that they [i[would[/i] get done, as planned or not. He swiped rain from his face and squelched around through the grass, nudging aside blades of grass and stems of plants in his search.
The closer he got to the shallows, the more the grass squished under his feet and after a moment he decided that while he was stubborn - or maybe he should call it determined? That sounded better! - he wasn't that stubborn, and he didn't want to be ankle deep in mud.
Yet.
Maybe if it took too long to find the mushrooms, that would happen.
He sighed, rubbing more rain out of his eyes before he mucked his way into the next soggy, mucky stand of grass, ducking down to shove grass stems out of the way methodically.
Thorne's stubbornness certainly paid off for him after a long, agonizing moment of thinking he wouldn't find anything. That mud really was getting all over his shoes and was that a streak on the side of his hand too?
Amongst the grass, cleverly hidden were two viable Mud Toadstools. There were a few others nearby but they were clearly inferior in size and Thorne could just tell somehow that these two would be potion grade. He was free to collect both of them.
Now, how to go about that?
They seemed like a good tug would help free them from the ground they grew in but he would have to be careful not to damage them either. Thorne was about to get a lot muddier from this task as well, but the reward would certainly be worth it.

Thorne was about to shift to another of the muddier patches when his eyes lit upon a dull, ruddy cap and-- there! That was what he was looking for! Large and the right color and- Thorne carefully reached down to feel around the stalk where it disappeared into the mud, pushing aside blades of grass so he could get a good grip.
Once he was able, he lifted gingerly and steadily, feeling the thin roots hold for a moment before giving with a subtle pop, the toadstool safely in his grasp. His...very, very muddy grasp. He would really have to make sure he cleaned up before he took everything to Professor Snape.
He didn't bother trying to clean the dirt from beneath his nails before he reached for the second toadstool, harvesting it with as much care as he had the first, and feeling a rush of satisfaction despite his filthy state.
Finally!
He squished and squelched his way back to his bag, lamenting the mud that followed him every step of the way, but as he trudged back towards the castle, he couldn't help the rush of accomplishment that flowed through him.
He'd done it!
