Reena had spent some time flicking through her Book of Enchantments last night and was understandably tired today. She knew she should rather focus on studying so she had decided to do one quick action as a transition between class and cooping herself up in the library all day.
She walked up the Spiral Tower, Bronze Key in hand. This hopefully would distract her from her new book and the news of Azkaban to clear out space for studying in her mind.
She had passed some doors before she settled on one halfway up. She put the key inside the lock and hoped to unlock it.
Roaring flames burst from either side of the door -- spreading like a ferocious beast around the room that had darkness instead of walls. The enchanted fire was high and dangerous, yet the heat remained bearable. There was no smoke, but licks of flames shot from the furthermost inferno wall.
There was a glowing, pale blue line on the floor between door and fire. The fiery attacks were aimed towards it, as if resistance was expected. A brick conjured on the line.
A plaque reads:
"Behind the line, face the flames. Cast your defence, then brace your courage. Ten bricks is all it takes, but zero will get you burned."
How to Play
Similar to duelling, your character casts a "defensive spell" towards the line, which converts into bricks during the mod post. The goal is to build a wall strong enough to defeat the flames, rather than just keeping it at bay.
This is the only skill room where your character's actual skill level plays a role. The starting bricks are determined by these milestones:
Defence Skill 0 = 1 brick
Defence Skill 3 = 2 bricks
Defence Skill 6 = 3 bricks
Defence Skill 9 = 4 bricks
A mod rolls a die to determine how many bricks (1 - 6) are added -- aka how strong your character's defensive spell was. Then another die for the fire's attack damage (1 - 6) against the wall. Each point of damage destroys a brick.
To win, the wall must reach a total of 10 bricks. If your bricks reach 0, you lose.
Winning earns 200 exp to their Defence skill, and 20 exp to every other skill.
Although playing a mini-game, this is still an RP-thread. We strongly encourage immersing your character in this experience and challenge, as these threads are also designed for character development.
For her first cast, Reena's spell was quite confident and four bricks were conjured to appear in place, building a small defensive wall. They were added to the one brick already present so Reena was now half-way done with her task. An auspicious start.
But the fire roared in response, as if displeased by her attempts to hold it at bay.
Flames reached forward, licking at the bricks but it was only able to destroy one brick. The fire retreated a bit, waiting for Reena to make her next move.

Reena felt rather confident as she conjured four bricks into place, yet took a step back from the heat as the fire roared against her little wall. She watched in slight dismay as it destroyed one of her bricks, leaving her with less than half of what she needed to succeed.
While she was aware of the danger fire posed, she was fascinated by it at the same time. This fire especially seemed rather alive to her, almost sentient.
Likely because it was magical. Magic was sentient to some extent after all. She could feel it course through her and all around, especially in such a history rich place as the castle.
She felt almost compelled to compliment the fire but instead she waved her wand in a firm motion as she cast yet another defensive spell to build onto her wall.
Her second spell had more confidence behind it - perhaps the success of her first cast or seeing how little the fire could do helped? Regardless of the reason, five bricks appeared and dropped into place. Her wall grew bigger and stronger.
But the fire was ever present, not giving her a moment to relax. Almost as soon as the bricks were conjured, the fire darted forward. It seemed to feel out how well Reena had built her wall before making its counter-attack.
It blasted two bricks off the top of the wall, each one flying towards Reena but thankfully they disappeared before they could harm her.
The fire lingered at the wall and then backed off again. It was Reena's turn and she still had quite an impressive wall left standing.

Reena felt rather smug when she was able to conjure five bricks. A smugness that was promptly wiped away when the fire sent two bricks back towards her and she flinched back.
Her arm was held up protectively over her face and she glimpsed up behind it when nothing ended up hitting her. The bricks had been destroyed before they could reach her.
Reena cleared her throat and patted down her uniform before getting back in a proper stance. She glared down the flames, feeling as though the fire was trying to mock her.
She waved her wand once more as she whispered her incantation for another defensive spell against the flames.
Reena's determination might have faltered for a moment but her magic surged to help her. Another three bricks were conjured and easily placed themselves into her wall, building it up proud and strong. It glowed brightly with magic, as it to show how stalwart it was in its defence.
With all ten bricks in place the fire fizzled away to nothing, hissing its displeasure at being defeated.
The way to the exit was now clear for Reena and she noticed the door itself opening slightly, as if to invite the victor to leave.
