An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
When Orla arrived, slightly breathless from her run, her steps seemed to echo down and away from her into the empty hallway.
She looked around, then stepped back a little so that she was standing in line with the frame of the first corridor window. She gathered the length of her robes in her right hand so that it didnt dangle around her legs - she needed to see her feet clearly.
One, two, three…
Orla went slowly - she wanted to make sure she got this right. At the tenth step, she stood stock still and dropped her robes, her arms out to each side as though to balance her.
It took a while to figure out the exact spot she needed to stand, then a section of the wall turned into the door-sized mirror. Having experienced it before, Orla knew to press her palm to the surface of the mirror.
Same as last time, there was a brief resistance before she could move through it. Once she'd stepped into the room, the mirror would fade from the outside wall so no one else could stumble upon it.
Despite the change of door location, the large room was exactly as it was before. It was lit by torches and otherwise empty, except the door on the other side. The floor was typical Hogwarts stone, without the appearance of the puzzle -- her progress was retained; she didn't have to solve it again.
The door at the end wasn't locked.
Inside was spacious yet empty and dimly-lit, except for the sleeping beast in the middle of the room. Though she now knew the name of it, the ancient beast was no less intimidating. It resembled a massive, scaly bear with curved tusks and had three eyes. Hopefully, this time her encounter would be more successful.
Orla spun on the spot, elated, and hurried through the mirror. She practically sprinted through the room on the other side, her hand already pulling out the Ancient Fruit.
At the door, she halted and took a deep breath, then opened it as gently as she could. The beast was curled in the centre, as it always was.
Orla chewed her bottom lip anxiously, and placed the fruit on the floor in front of her.
"Wingardium Leviosa,"she whispered with a practised flick of her wand. The fruit rose, and with looping movements Orla sent it toward the beast.
With deliberate slowness, Orla moved the fruit back and forth in front of the creature's great wet nose, hoping the scent would awaken it without anger.

The Gerodenus sniffed the air even with its eyes closed at first, eager for the fruit. Once given permission to claim it, the beast eyed the fruit. The beast was formidable and intimidating in size alone, never mind the tusks and fortified scales as well, yet there was a politeness about its manner as it studied Orla for a moment to confirm.
Using its powerful jaws, it gently retrieved the ancient fruit floating in front of it. The beast wandered to the far left of the room -- eating the fruit in one gulp. Its scales shimmered and glowed like pearls, then the Gerodenus returned to its slumber in the shadows.
The floor beneath Orla's feet rumbled. Across the room, the wall changed and shifted to reveal her next task. There were four mirrors with a Hogwarts house crest above each. A phrase was carved in stone in front of the mirrors where Orla stood. Its an ancient language, but the letters shift to English:
The hat chose yours, but to enter you must be whole. For each of ours, tell us how to test you. Show us your bravery, your loyalty, your wisdom, and your deepest ambition. Show us your soul, and the window shall become the gateway.
To use one of the mirrors, step close to it -- the frame will change to match its house colour. Be sure to specify which house you've picked. You can only use one mirror / house at a time. This task is co-op modded -- meaning your input is needed as part of the progress, when requested.
An electric thrill of wonder went through Orla as the great Gerodenus ate the fruit and lumbered out of the way. She was terrified, but in awe of the creature, and she wished she could have more time with it.
As the beast settled, its great eyes drifted closed once more - she shouldn’t disturb it. With great self-control, especially as the Gerodenus glowed like a sunlit pearl as she snuck by, Orla made her way past.
The floor rumbled beneath her feet and when four more mirrors appeared they reflected Orla crouching with her arms wrapped around her knees, wand tip poking her nose as she read the message upon the flagstones.
”A test…four tests?” She murmured, standing to take in the mirrors properly. Her eyes lingered on her own house crest, so she stepped to the Slytherin one first.
”I suppose you show my deepest ambition?” She began, talking to the mirror as though it was a friend as she stood on tiptoe, scanning the frame for any inscriptions.
After a moment, she settled back onto her heels and tipped her head back, thinking.
“Or…no, I guess the point is to show you, is that it?”
When nothing appeared to happen, Orla twisted her mouth in thought and stepped closer, watching her reflection closely.
Could it be like the entrance mirror…? It was worth trying, so Orla raised her hand and placed it flat against the surface of the mirror, still turning the inscription over in her mind.
Though the words were technically correct, the Hat did give Orla a choice - Slytherin or Gryffindor. She had picked Slytherin because she wanted to be herself, to seek adventure on her own time in her own way.
This particular adventure was turning out to be more confusing than she had anticipated, so Orla spoke aloud to try and work things out.
”My deepest ambition…how to test me? Awk, I dunno!”
Orla rubbed her face with her hands, which were a little cold, and puffed in frustration.
“I guess I want…to be known,” she said, slowly. “Can you show me what that would be like? To be known throughout the magical world for what I can achieve?”
Orla did not say that she wanted to be known as herself and not to be absorbed into the Fallwater name as just another pair of working hands. This was painful to think about - to be apart was to be outcast, for all intents and purposes.
With a calming breath, she placed her hand on the mirror, and thought about what it would be like to become her own person, outside of the path that had already been laid for her.
Orla stepped back, wary of the fog that had spread over the surface of the mirror. She needn't have worried, but it was still creepy to see letters forming words, written by some ghostly hand.
"Awk, you can hear me then," she said, stepping forward again. Goosebumps ran down her arms and she shivered, though it wasn't really cold here.
The words were a choice, or so Orla gathered. Not exactly a question, but something that needed a reply; she tilted her head, considering.
It was easy, really, and that surprised her. Especially as she'd just said that she wanted to be known, to have her deeds or name recognised amongst magic folk. It seemed, however, that this mirror could see the truth of things, even if she didn't say it aloud.
Orla placed her hand on the glass. It felt a little scarier now - was there someone on the other side? Some spelled spirit who could see right through her? Well, it was rude not to say something at least, even if she was very creeped out at this point.
"I want to go my own way, without someone constantly nagging me about every little thing," she said, her voice a little unsteady. This was a little difficult.
The mirror's response was slower that time, then the words finally faded. For a moment, it seemed she'd completed her task -- but the glass remained reflective, and the fog just as thick.
New words formed. Though there was still no sound, Orla could almost feel a tone to them this time. There was something quite uncomfortable about the question, which she couldn't fully define yet it lingered -- and seemed to take hold of her.
