With shiny gem in hand, Xavier approached the Niffler sandpit. He had heard many stories from other students that if you offered a gem to one of the nifflers -- and were lucky -- that sometimes they brought you back a key! He'd always wanted to try it out for himself, and after getting his hands on one of the coveted gems it was time.
Kneeling down by the edge of the pit it seemed empty at the moment. It was morning after all, maybe they were sleeping? Holding out his hand with the gem shining in the morning sun he waited a few moments before gently speaking as to not startle the creatures.
"Hey little nifflers...anyone here?" he tilted his head and peered around. "I have this nice shiny gem here if you want it!" Part of him wanted to maybe toss it into the pit. Would they still find it? Afraid he might lose it he decided against that and just kept it outstretched in his hand. Hoping a niffler would come and take it from him.
Saoirse made her way to the beast reserve after breakfast that morning. Normally she went for a swim in the Black Lake around this time, but Madam Pomfrey had made it very clear that she was not to do anything that would risk her healing hand wound. She could imagine that the Black Lake was full of weird germs. Were magical germs a thing? It all made Saoirse's brain hurt.
She had some shiny gems that were very pretty but apparently of no use to anyone. However, she knew the older students exchanged them with the nifflers in the reserve. Saoirse had never seen a niffler before. She had seen platypuses in Australia, and apparently they were very similar in how adorable they were- except that nifflers loved to steal. And, the males weren't venomous.
Saoirse's thoughts on cute monotremes disappeared when she crested a hill and saw the sand pit ahead of her. There was already someone else there- another Gryffindor first-year, as well. Xavier Quinn, whom Saoirse had not interacted much with. Truthfully, after she had befriended Grace and Alice, she had made little attempt to socialize with anyone else. Making friends was difficult, being raised in the Muggle world and outside of the British Isles.
Still, Saoirse was not going to let some shyness stop her from meeting the nifflers. She approached Xavier but kept a wide berth, not wanting to spook the nifflers by making the area too crowded. She sat down on the sand a few meters away from him, and waved hello. She pulled a shiny gem out of her own pocket, and placed it in the palm of her hand. Saoirse placed it in her palm and laid her uninjured hand on the sand, keeping her arm very still.
She did this with birds sometimes- putting food in her palm and then holding it on the ground. It allowed her to pet their soft throats and bellies while they pecked at the food. Saoirse was hoping to sneakily pet the niffler's belly with her fingers when it came forward to take the shiny gem. She wondered if it would prefer Xavier's gem, or if there were multiple nifflers. Either way, she was used to patiently waiting for an animal sighting.
Was that the sound of two students? If so, that only meant one thing. Gems. The shiny stones had been offered more frequently lately, but the nifflers didn't mind—not in the slightest, as gems would always be coveted by the black, fluffy creatures. They'd take as many as they could stash.
A pair of rodent-like creatures emerged into the open, each of varying size. A smaller one, with a sleek, slim frame took the lead, while a more plumpish-shaped one took its time. They traveled in tandem, switching between quadrupedal and bipedal movement, with the rounder, fluffier niffler taking a cute tumble before catching up. It looked out of breath, its hands resting on its belly.
The quicker niffler took the shiny gem on offer from Xavier, while the chunkier one collected from Saoirse. It wasn't long before the pair got to work, digging in the dunes and looking for a key of any variety. There was an obvious difference in the amount of energy exerted from each niffler, but both did the best they possibly could in an attempt to find something special for the kids.
In the end, both Xavier and Saoirse were rewarded with a bronze key. And after handing the keys over to each student, the nifflers signaled their departure and hurried behind the dunes.
As he was waiting Xavier noticed someone else approaching. He quickly recognized the student as Saoirse, a fellow Gryffindor, who he had seen at breakfast. Honestly he didn't know her that well, she tended to stick with her friends but he still waved to her with a friendly smile. He resisted the urge to talk as he didn't want to startle the nifflers, and she seemed to be doing the same.
They sat together in comfortable silence for awhile until two nifflers approached them. One quicker and slimmer, the other a bit slower and more plump. They were both absolutely adorable and he smiled excitedly.
"Hello there!" He said as the slimmer niffler took his gem. After the other took Saoirse's gem they both turned and began digging in the sand. Xavier curiously and patiently waited hoping they'd both get lucky. He only had one gem on him today and he hoped he'd get a key!
After a bit of digging his niffler brought him back what looked like a bronze-colored key. Yes! Xavier took it gently with a nod of his head to the creature. "Thank you so much little niffler!" His dimpled smile was huge with happiness.
Glancing over he noticed Saoirse had gotten lucky too. "That's awesome! Looks like we both got one!" He said as he twirled it between his fingers to show her. Not wanting to overstay his welcome and just in case anyone else wanted to come try their luck he stood up and dusted the sand off his pants.
"I'll see you around!" He said as he waved goodbye to Saoirse and made his leave from the sandpit.
Saoirse sat quietly with Xavier Quinn for some time. She enjoyed the comfortable silence. Why did people always have to talk to fill the space? And even better, the silence made it so that Saoirse could hear the little animal noises. She heard the snuffles and scratching claws on sand before she could see the nifflers. When Saoirse could see them, her mouth fell open.
One was portly, the other slim. But both were incredibly cute. They took turns racing across the sand to the two of them. The chubby one managed to fall over, and Saoirse made an odd noise in her throat. Was she... about to start crying? She couldn't handle it.
The skinny one went to Xavier, and the plump one came over to Saoirse. Saoirse looked at its shining eyes, at how it seemed to struggle to get over to her. Poor thing! Why were fat animals simply the cutest? Saoirse watched as the niffler took her key, and as she wanted, the tips of her fingers managed to stroke the soft fur of its generous belly.
She was thrilled. The niffler probably hadn't even noticed the touch, but it made Saoirse's day. She watched as it began digging, obviously struggling. Saoirse was patient. She could see how hard it was trying, and she was genuinely just happy to watch the little creature at work. Getting the key was just a bonus.
Xavier got his key first, and Saoirse could see the flash of bronze before it disappeared into the other first year's hand. Afterward, Saoirse's niffler approached her with her own key- also bronze. Saoirse accepted the key gratefully and smiled at the niffler. It joined its friend in rushing back across the dunes, and disappeared behind them.
Saoirse had so many questions. The nifflers were so sweet. Did they have some sort of home back there? How many were there in total? Saoirse smiled and waved at Xavier as he left the area. She figured she should do the same as well. She stood and dusted sand off her robes. She looked back at where the nifflers had disappeared one last time before leaving.
