Toby made his way up the tower, seeming to stomp up the stairs as he did so. The events at breakfast had already set him up for a bad day ahead, and then he'd had potions with Snape first thing in the morning. That would be enough to sour anyone's mood, but then he'd also had that wasted journey to the Greenhouse after class.
It was the final straw.
Deciding that he'd catch up with his friends later, Toby had decided to attempt to figure out which door his bronze key belonged to. He'd been holding onto it for a while, but hadn't actually thought to investigate further... Not until today, when he was not in the right mood to be around people.
He'd always been taught to count to ten when he felt himself getting mad... That had never really worked for him, and the next step was to take himself away so that his foul mood couldn't upset others.
Choosing a door further up the tower than he'd originally planned to walk, he inserted the key into the lock and hoped for the best.
The room was well-lit by windows enchanted to display a sunny afternoon, and its temperature was comfortable. There was a huge pond in the middle -- its waters dark and deep, with a foreboding sense of the unknown. Beside it were two wooden buckets; one white, and one black.
A plaque reads:
"Beneath the waters, and among the kelp, is a bed of stones. Grab one and resurface, before those in slumber awaken to drag you down a watery grave. Before you are two buckets, where you must toss your treasure -- for one you win, the other you lose. Be warned, brave adventurer, as magic cannot help you here."
How to Play
The pond is very deep and almost impossible to see through. Your character can attempt magic, but nothing will happen; this room's enchanted so magic can't be used.
Your character must swim to the bottom of the pond, which is full of kelp and tricky to navigate without getting tangled. They can resurface for air and keep trying, if needed. Free-RP is allowed.
With a stone in hand, your character then attempts to swim back to the surface. A mod will determine how that goes (50 / 50 chance) -- if you're all clear or if something attacks. If attacked, you can free-RP how it's resolved.
Once leaving the pond, toss the stone into either the black (odd) or white (even) bucket. A mod will roll a die to determine which bucket is the winner. There is always a 50 / 50 chance of winning or losing this mini-game.
Winning earns 200 exp to their Marauder skill, and 20 exp to every other skill.
Although playing a mini-game, this is still an RP-thread. We strongly encourage immersing your character in this experience and challenge, as these threads are also designed for character development.

Toby looked around as he entered the room, glancing first at the windows and then towards the large pond that lay ominously in the middle of the room. There was something about the pond that made his gut instinct scream at him to stay away from the edge, and so he did... For five seconds.
Walking further into the room, he approached the pond for a better look. Peering down into its depths, he found it was almost impossible to see beneath the surface of the water, giving no indication to what might be hidden beneath. That didn't make Toby any more confident about what it was doing locked away in a room, especially now that he was in there with it.
Moving away from the edge again, Toby turned his attention towards the plaque. He read it once, and then again to ensure that he understood what it was saying. He was supposed to enter the pond and retrieve... A stone?
Toby was a confident swimmer, having grown up playing in the creek nearby his house, but the idea of diving into a pond where there could be monsters lurking ready to drag him down to a watery grave... That did not fill him with a sense of joy. If Ryan was there, he'd probably call him an idiot for even attempting it.
But Toby was a lion among birds, he'd let them deal with the logical side of things.
Worried that they might weigh him down, Toby first took off his robes and tie. It would be much easier to swim in his shirt than with all the extra layers of clothing floating around him in the water- but he didn't want to enter the water in his underwear, then his bare skin would have no protection from whatever dangers lay beneath.
Toby approached the pond once again, easing himself into the water so that he made as little noise as possible. If he dived in, he might attract unwanted attention. So far so good, nothing reached up to grab his legs...
Taking in a deep breath, he dived beneath the water. It was dark and difficult to see as he kicked his legs out, hoping to propel himself deeper towards the bottom of the pond. There were thick walls of kelp that he had to push through to make any progress, and the ways they tangled around his limbs as he moved made it difficult not to panic.
It felt like forever before his hand finally brushed against the smooth surface of a stone- indicating he'd reached the bottom of the pond. His lungs were starting to burn with the effort of holding his breath, and he quickly snatched up the stone and began to kick as fast as he could towards the surface.
The pond was dark and nearly impossible to see in, but there was a sense that Tobias wasn't alone. There was a faint sound in the water that grew louder the more he swam upward, as if it were within a few meters of him. He was close though, with only a couple more kicks to the surface—until something grabbed his ankle like a shackle, preventing him from ascending.

Toby couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. It started as queasiness in his gut, that was then confirmed by the sound of something with him in the water. The plaque had warned about something in the pond waiting to drag him to 'a watery grave' and in a surge of panic, he clutched the stone to his chest and kicked faster.
He felt sure that he was almost at the surface, when he felt something grab his leg- halting his ascent. Toby felt his stomach flip, by now his lungs burned with the need for air and he realized that this thing intended to drown him if he did not free himself from its clutches.
His first instinct was to reach for his wand- which remained abandoned at the side of the pond, in his robes pocket and that wouldn't work anyway due to this being the one place in a magical school that magic wouldn't work. His next instinct was to kick the hell out of whatever it was, until it released him.
Getting enough force behind a kick was much harder in water than on land, but Toby was determined. He was supposed to die on the Quidditch pitch after miraculously catching the snitch, saving his team from a dramatic loss- not in a murky pond at the hands of some unknown entity.
Toby kicked once, feeling his foot slam into something beneath him. He kicked again, this time aiming at the (presumed) hand that was wrapped around his ankle. He felt the grip loosen ever so slightly and kicked again, and again... Until suddenly he was free.
Propelling himself upwards, his head broke the surface and he sucked in a large lungful of air. His breathing coming in fast, ragged gasps as he swam towards the edge of the pond and hauled himself out. Tossing the stone into the black bucket without giving it much thought about whether it was the right one, he scrambled away from the edge and tucked his knees up to his chin.
The water in the pond remained as still as black glass, nothing following after Tobias when he'd hauled himself onto the edge of the pond. He was safe and unharmed, but possibly left with a shaken curiosity. What exactly had grabbed onto his ankle and attempted to drown him?
Tobias' stone hit the bottom of the black bucket with a clangor, then shot into the air—exploding into a colorful display of fireworks that harmlessly rained down around him. It was loud enough to warrant him covering his ears, but beautiful; a spectacle of celebration and success. After the commemoration of his obvious victory, the room fell silent and the room's door clicked open.

Toby continued to stare at the pond, but the surface remained still and unbroken. He waited like that for a few moments, until the fireworks erupting from the bucket forced him to tear his gaze away. Clapping his hands over his ears to shield them from the noisy display of victory, he finally got to his feet.
He figured this meant that he had passed the test, though he wasn't sure what lesson he had learnt from it. Maybe not to go swimming in mysterious ponds hidden away in magical castles.
Grimacing at the way his wet clothes clung to his body, Toby retrieved his robes and tie and draped them over his arm. He didn't want to wear his dry clothes over the wet ones he had on, best to just hurry back to the common room and relax with a warm bath before getting into dry pyjamas.
With one final glance towards the pond, Tobias slipped from the room and started back down the stairs.
