Kassia took a pleasant morning stroll after retrieving her plants from the greenhouse. She enjoyed the peace and solitude after the very exciting morning. The air was brisk and fresh, but not too cold. Her walk was more than enough to keep her warm.
She was going to a new place today- the sand pit. Kassia avoided the beast reserve as a general rule. But today, she needed it. If she wanted to succeed at her OWLS, she would need the help of... kleptomaniac platypuses.
She stopped when she reached their sandy home, glancing around. She had three shiny gems on her person. It seemed she was alone for now, but she would change that. Kassia removed the gems from her pockets and eyed them. She wanted to toss them all, but nifflers were not to be trusted. So she tossed one onto the sand, and pocketed the other two.

As soon as Kassia's gem hit the sand, a curious, small niffler came into view. The platypus-like creature hurried towards it and twitched its long, thin snout as it sniffed at the precious stone. Determining it to be authentic and an offering from the fifth year girl, the magical beast hugged it close to its chest. It was a gift worth treasuring and the creature smiled with its round eyes.
But she wasn't there to simply give it to him—she wanted a key, just like the many students before her had. So, the niffler pocketed the gem in the pouch on its belly and burrowed in a dune near the bank, sand flying like a spray as it flicked out from where the creature was digging.
Perhaps it was a stroke of good luck, but Kassia earned what she desired on her very first try. The creature emerged from the sand, a reflective bronze key in its hands, holding the prize above its head for her to take. Once she'd taken her key, the niffler quickly retreated into a nearby bush.
Kassia watched the tiny Niffler appear and clutch her gem to its little chest. The corners of her mouth twitched as she attempted to resist how adorable it was. Why were the thieving little rodents so unbearably cute? She waited patiently as it started burrowing, stepping aside to avoid being hit with spraying sand.
Incredibly, it provided. The Niffler returned with a bronze key, even holding it for her to take. Kassia gently bent to take the key, feeling its soft hands as she did. No. Absolutely not. She pushed the maternal feelings down, and kept a straight face. The animal disappeared just as quickly as it had arrived, going into the bushes. Kassia wondered if it was the same Niffler every time.
"Thank you for our trade," she said out loud, and immediately felt foolish. She retreated just as quickly as the Niffler had, heading back to the castle.
