After picking up her potions kit from Professor Snape, Kassia had decided she might as well start the herbology one as well. There were several ingredients she would have to grow herself for potions, anyway. And besides, Amelia had said she'd be available at the greenhouse that afternoon.
That was why Kassia found herself outside again that day. With the amount of walking through cold she'd done today, she could consider herself part of the Norwegian ski infantry. Kassia wrapped her scarf around the bottom half of her face and cursed how far away Hagrid lived.
But she supposed it wasn't really his fault. Kassia observed the forest and paths she rarely got to see as she approached Hagrid's hut. The chimney was smoking cheerily. Normally Kassia would turn her nose up at something so rustic, but today it looked warm and comforting.
She banged her gloved fist on the front door and waited.
Fang barked at it... three times, then gave up and went back to his warm bed.
'Hello,' Hagrid said, pulling open the door to reveal the student who'd braved the cold weather to reach his doorstep. It must be something important, but then again she was an OWL student. 'How can I help yeh?'
Kassia heard the groundskeeper's massive dog barking at the front door. She took a small step backwards. She had already lost a whole outfit to the unseasonal monsoon Amelia had conjured up, and she wasn't interested in losing another one to dog slobber. However, when the door opened, she saw no dog and only the massive, bushy Hagrid before her.
Hagrid had been the first non-human Kassia had ever met, and she still reserved some wonderment for him. The idea of humans and non-humans mixing together was fascinating, and she didn't like how their offspring were generally treated. That being said, Hagrid could certainly do with a proper hairstylist. And a tailor.
"Good afternoon, Hagrid. I know it's quite late in the year, but I'd like to begin my herbology kit. May I have a growing pot?"
She tried to peek around him to see if Fang was anywhere nearby, but it was impossible to see past his massive bulk. Hopefully, the dog was too lazy to show any interest in her.
Fang was indeed too lazy (and sleepy) to pay Kassia much interest. He'd done his dutiful barking, so considered himself free to just rest on his bed and not worry what Hagrid or anyone else was doing.
Kassia's request for a garden pot didn't surprise Hagrid at all, not even in this awfully cold weather. He'd come to expect it from students now, and often imagined Professor Sprout was quite proud of her students who kept arriving on his doorstep in hope to expand their Herbology interest.
'Wait here. Got one around here somewhere.' Hagrid nodded, disappearing into the hut to prepare a garden pot with fresh soil. 'Here yeh go. Is there anything else yeh needed?' he asked, heavily placing the pot into her arms.
As Hagrid disappeared into the hut to fetch her pot, Kassia peered around what she could see of the inside. She could never help being nosy. She was fascinated at the enormous furniture. And just as she'd hoped, the hound was lazing about in his bed.
When Hagrid reappeared and placed the pot into Kassia's hands, it was significantly heavier than she'd expected. She nearly buckled under the weight. She'd never been physically very strong.
Putting her arms around it to ensure a strong grip, she shook her head. "No, Hagrid. Thank you for this. It's very kind of you. Have a good day."
She left the hut and walked awkwardly along the path, hoping her arms would not give out on the way- or worse, that someone would see her and laugh.
