After breakfast, William went to the forest path towards the Hagrid's hut. He wanted to ask him for a spare pot to plant some seeds.
When he came near the hut, he glanced around to check if Fang was not nearby. Fang was small and calm, but still, he reminded him of some old memories about which he didn't want to think.
So, only after verifying that did he go near the door to knock. The one thought in his mind right now was that Fang could come here from any direction. So he kept his eyes wandering around for any sight.
His knock was first responded to by exactly what William feared: Fang. He barked loudly from inside the hut, alerting Hagrid to their company.
'Hello?' Hagrid opened the door, spotting the Slytherin student. 'Ah. How can I help yeh?' he asked, nudging Fang back from trying to warily sniff at William's shoes.
William tries to knock calmly, keeping all his emotions in check but as soon as he heard the bark, he was ten feet away from the door. It was almost instinct; He didn't even realize what had happened. The next moment Hagrid was standing in front and behind him Fang.
Fand was smaller than the dog in his old memories, who used to chase him away as a little boy, but the bark reminded him of that day only. He could feel his hands hair standing, not because of the cold weather. He covered himself with his jacket, trying to calm himself.
"Hi, Hagrid," He said, but his voice was still shaky, and he didn't like it. He took another deep breath and tried to talk normally. "I just needed a spare pot for planting a seed." He said. His voice was better, but his eyes fixed on Fang. He knew Fang was not dangerous, he had never done anything wrong, but the fact that he reminded him of his past couldn't help.
"And please keep him away from me." He added. His voice sounded almost like a little child. He again composed his voice and added in a normal tone, "I mean, if you could keep inside the hut."
Charlotte had left class, having learned about the Seeking Charm, and headed towards the forest path. There was a fear in her eyes as she moved through the grounds, something she knew she needed to get over. She had been here since fall and still felt so terrified of the whole idea of being able to be outside. She had decided not to ask any of her dormmates to come. They probably didn't want to go out in the cold.
She could see the top of the hut coming into view and rubbed her gloved hands together before she put them in front of her and lifted her chin. She had to walk like a proper lady, right? When she saw someone else there, she swallowed. As she got closer, her eyes widened and she saw William standing there. What was he doing here? The large man, Hagrid, was already speaking to her brother.
She had slowed her pace, but she didn't stop. When she saw the large man keeping the dog behind him, she felt her hand grip at her robs, her heart was thumping rather hard. She didn't like dogs... The memory of being chased by one as a toddler had haunted her dreams. All she could remember was the fear and that is exactly what she felt right now. When she was close enough, she looked past her brother at the large man.
"Good morning, William. Good Morning, Mr. Hagrid," she said in a shy, sheepish voice. Already, she was scolding herself for not making her voice assertive or loud enough.
'Reckon I have one here somewhere, one moment,' Hagrid headed into the house, retrieving a garden pot and filling it with fresh soil. Fang eyed William while he did so. 'Here yeh go.' He heavily deposited the pot into the Slytherin's arms.
Hagrid was quite confused, glancing at Fang and wondering why anyone would insisted he remained indoors. It was quite cold out, but nothing Fang wasn't already used to. The boy seemed nervous though, and Hagrid recalled that this was a Doren kid. Ah, that made sense.
And as if on cue, the youngest Doren arrived as well.
'Not teh worry,' Hagrid kindly assured them. 'Fang's as dopey as they come. A right coward, too. Gentle as can be. Yeh got nothing teh fear from him, apart from slobber if yeh become friends.'
He glanced at Charlotte. 'Yeh after a garden pot too?' he wondered, ready to assist the young Ravenclaw with another pot -- or something else, if her intention was different from her brother's.
Fang eyed them both, then whined. He lazily dropped to the floor for a nap.
Charlotte had wide eyes, focused on the dog, even if she was trying to still her trembling fingers. She listened to what the man said, but she still didn't want that dog to come out. It was hard to be comfortable around any dog, especially one so large and dark in color. It brought back memories she didn't want to revisit.
When the large man asked about if she wanted a pot so, she looked at her brother in a little surprise. He was after a pot too? She hadn't expected to see him gardening. Would their parents approve? She didn't know... They never let them really do anything, except stay in their part of the house and out of their way.
"Yes, Mr. Hagrid, if you have one available," she said in her sweet voice, but felt it tremble when she heard the animal whine before she watched it lay down behind the large man.
William didn't realize that somebody else was also there. He turned to notice Charlotte behind him. She looked nervous and scared, and he knew the reason for that was the dog in front of them. It was not a good thing to show weakness in front of others, and that's why he was glad that she wasn't here when he sounded so nervous.
He didn't like her to be that scared and hoped it would be better if she wasn't here when fand was. Probably she would have come after Fang was asleep or something else. He wanted to help her calm down, so he tried the only way he knew. "Good Morning, Charlotte." He said with a fully confident voice and a little smile and hoped that it would give more confidence to her too.
Hagrid went inside to take a pot while Fang eyed him. He also stared into his eyes, trying his best to stay in proper posture knowing his sister was behind him, but in the truth, he was too scared. The pot was heavy, but William held it tightly in his arms. "Thanks, Hagrid."
Hagrid's words were correct, and William knew it. The dog was always silent whenever he came near the hut, but William was scared of his memory more than the actual dog. The dog made a scary voice and went to sleep. William was working on his task, but he thought of maybe staying for a minute or two, so Charlotte could get her pot too. Even though the dog was asleep, he decided against leaving Charlotte here alone.
Hearing Charlotte's polite confirmation, he headed back inside the hut to retrieve another garden pot with fresh soil, all ready to be used.
He then heavily placed it into her arms. 'Here yeh go. Is there anything else yeh two need?' he wondered, just in case.
Fang continued to snooze, perfectly content to sleep through conversation and pots full of dirt. Nothing exciting there; he'd already sniffed out the pots earlier.
When William said Good Morning, she looked over at him and gave him a weak smile before she looked back at the massive man that went inside his hut. Charlotte wasn't waiting long before she had a rather large and heavy pot placed in her arms. She furrowed her eyes brows as she got her balance and then looked up at the man.
"Thank you, Mr. Hagrid," she said before she glanced behind her and still saw William there. Was he waiting on her? Why? He had never really waited on her before. She returned to the man at present though and shook her head before she left and headed back to the path that lead to the castle.
"Are you... going to the greenhouse too?" She asked in a proper tone as she joined her elder brother.
William waited there for a minute until Hagrid returned with another pot for Charlotte. He didn't want t show her that he stayed for her; that's why he stayed a few steps away, pretending to find a proper way to hold the pot in which he could take it inside the castle. He doesn't want her to think that she needs someone near her.
"Nothing else, Hagrid. Thanks." He said. He looked towards the dog one last time to check if he was asleep, then started towards the castle. He could hear footsteps on the snow which arrived near him fast enough.
"Yes." He replied without any expressions, walking on the path which would lead to the castle.
Charlotte nodded towards her brother and looked ahead as they moved up the castle. He had longer legs than her, but seemed to walk just slow enough for her to follow him. She felt herself watching the path as they moved, her eyes a little down before she looked over at him. What if he was taking mental notes for their parents, hoping to tell them what she was doing. Would they punish her for being outside the castle? She wasn't allowed outside at home and she felt a small wave of panic take over her.
"I didn't know you were interested in herbology," she said calmly as she walked, not sure why she was speaking to him at all. Yes, she was his sister, but they barely spoke at home. Yet, here they were walking together. She still walked as proper as she could, trying to not fall with the heavy pot.
William kept silently walking as there was no need to talk much. It was only a few yards to the castle. He makes sure to keep his speed slow for Charlotte to be able to follow up. There were some good trees and pants nearby. Probabily, he would return after gardening to find some ingredients.
He already had a big schedule for today. After gardening, he had to finish Professor Snape's assignment. Then class and homework. He kept remembering his schedule for the whole day in mind. Charlotte's sudden question brought him out of his planning.
"Not much, but needs to prepare for the exam. Do you like Herbology?" He asked. Usually, he didn't do small talk, but right now, nothing else he had to do.
Charlotte looked ahead at his answer. She didn't know him well, but that sounded like him. He was always one she noticed who studied. She shrugged a little at his question towards her. Did she like Herbology? It was kind of nice, the plants were pretty and they had good benefits when you harvested them. From everything she had read, it was an important skill, though she doubted her parents would believe the same.
"I have found it very interesting and it seems very useful," she said in her usual proper voice as they walked. She enjoyed talking and getting to know the people she spent time with, but it was hard for her when she was around her family. Maybe William and Elizabeth got to hang out in their common room? She was stuck away from them. Maybe they liked it that way? Both of them were a year apart, she was a few years apart.
Maybe they didn't want to deal with a younger sibling?
William just nodded don her reply. There was nothing much for them to talk and he couldn't think of any other topic. So, he kept walking on the path with little increased speed. He didn't want to waste time walking when he had so many things to do.
The path wasn't long, and he could already see the greenhouse at a distance of just ten yards. There were some noises coming from the area, which means some people were there, but he kept walking to cover the remaining distance too.
