An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
Tom opened the door to the Student Laboratory, a feeling of excitement and nerves bubbling up inside him. He had run straight to his dormitory from the forest path after gathering his honey, gathered up his cauldron and made a beeline to the student laboratory. His short legs could barely move as quickly as he wanted them to, a feeling of impatience welling inside him like he hadn't known prior.
It had been a long and arduous road to gather the courage to ask Professor Snape for permission to use the facility outside of class hours, and more arduous still to collect all the necessary ingredients to gain his head of house's permission and be able to brew the things he wanted to brew.
And now here he was, about to brew his very first potion! Well, not a potion exactly, but the process of making pumpkin juice was basically like brewing a potion, right? Tom felt it was a good starting point for his endeavors. He had never brewed anything on his own before, and while he was confident in his abilities, he felt more at ease starting small.
It was obvious he was the first person to use the laboratory this morning- no surprise, it was still a holiday and there was a dueling tournament going on later in the day. Tom wasn't particularly concerned about participating, although he wouldn't mind going to watch- only if his pumpkin juice had been brewed successfully. He chose a space right in the middle of the laboratory and began to set out his ingredients and necessary tools.
Tom hauled his cauldron over to the spring of water that somehow magically bubbled up inside the castle and ladled in the appropriate amount. Returning it to his workstation, he hanged it above the kindling and retrieved a torch from the wall, starting a small fire and gently bringing up his cauldron to temperature.
Working quickly, Tom began to prepare his ingredients, of which thankfully there were few. He peeled and chopped his pumpkin with surprising speed, having it chopped well before the cauldron reached the needed temperature. The apple he peeled and sliced like he had been doing so his whole life. He portioned out the amount of honey he needed and waited for the water to come up to an appropriate temperature.
Once it was hot enough, Tom dropped the pumpkin pieces in and stirred clockwise until the mixture turned a vivid orange color- something that happened quicker than he'd anticipated. He quickly deposited in his sliced and peeled apples, and gave two more clockwise stirs before pouring in the honey. He stoked the flame with his wand to make sure it remained at a high heat and fixed his eyes on the sundial in the corner of the room, dutifully counting down three minutes exactly.
Tom appreciated the time these three minutes gave him to breathe, but he was also incredibly anxious- he just wanted to be finished, to prove to himself he could do it!

With the happy news of his family being safe, Arthur could finally relax. He wished that the delivery owl had been a little faster, or at list more willing to peck Arthur awake in the middle of the night. Or rather, just screech at him. He felt like he hadn't slept at all. He rubbed at his eyes. Regardless, he'd been planning to make a potion. He just hoped he wasn't too tired to do it right.
Arthur cleaned off his station and made sure everything was prepared, including himself. He wore his gloves, just in case. He set out all his ingredients, making sure he had everything before he started. He decided it would be best if he prepared his things in advance. He powdered the nuts and chopped the wild primpear and the wintercress, separately just in case. Arthur was feeling pretty satisfied with himself by the time those tasks were done.
He filled his pewter cauldron with water to start the potion, and then added the first set of moonurk berries. He double-checked, no, triple-checked that the instructions said 'clockwise' and not 'counter-clockwise' before he stirred once clockwise. With that done, he added the powdered nuts and the fluxygrass before stirring counter-clockwise five times.
That was all good, or at least Arthur thought it was. He was always a little worried if he missed something small, and wouldn't find out until later. Following the next step, he added the chopped wild primpear to the potion, and then the sap and second set of moonurk berries. He was careful and cautious with the sap, hoping that it wouldn't stick too much to him.
He was also cautious with the heating. Setting his timer from home, he heated the mixture for two minutes, and then let it cool. He sung a little bit of a song to himself as he did so, a Muggle song that was rather popular with his younger cousin, who he did miss quite a bit.
Satisfied that the mixture had cooled, he looked at it and noted its pale colour. Excellent! That was what it was supposed to look like.
He checked the next step and happily added the third and final set of moonurk berries as well as the chopped wintercress. Then, he stirred counter-clockwise twelve times, counting out loud as he did so just to make sure that he wasn't forgotting. Finally, Arthur stirred clockwise twice. Examining the potion, he found that he was quite pleased with the colour. He had his hopes up, though this was one potion he definitely wouldn't even think of drinking.
Arthur waved his wand in an 'A' motion to complete the potion.
Tom took the three minute cook time to gather his thoughts. So far things were going well, and nothing had blown up in his face- a definite win. A beam of sunlight hit the sundial in the corner of the room perfectly, obviously some feat of magic as Tom knew for a fact it was not sunny outside, and he was able to count down 3 minutes to the very second.
As soon as the three minutes elapsed, Tom raised his cauldron off the flame a bit to reduce the heat. He began to stir in a counterclockwise motion, languidly moving his arms, hoping the texture of his pumpkin juice would mimic the soft but controlled movement of his arms. He stirred for what felt like 10 minutes before the mixture was smooth to his liking.
He smiled at himself and took the cauldron completely off the heat, allowing it to cool. He let out a breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding and even chuckled slightly to himself. He'd done it! He suppressed a whoop of excitement, which was a good thing because he also realized at some point Arthur had entered the laboratory as well.
"Hello," Tom called out to the other boy at his work station. They were friendly though not really friends. Tom knew Arthur had a talent and love for Herbology, so it made sense he would be a fan of potion making as well. The two disciplines often went hand in hand. Maybe if they became better friends, Arthur could help Tom with his Herbology skills.
"What are you brewing?" Tom asked Arthur. The brief respite to initiate a conversation had been just what Tom needed to allow his mixture to cool. He pulled out his wand and waved it over the concoction, deciding on the spot that his signature wand move for his potion making would be a smiley face- two swishes up top for the eyes and one long half moon swish right below. He pulled out a vial and began to spoon the mixture in, careful not to let even a single drop spill.
The pumpkin juice sufficiently cooled and properly bottled in his vial, Tom hauled his cauldron back over to the bubbling fount of water in the corner of the laboratory and began to scrub. Tom knew lots of Muggleborn kids who had become lazy after coming to Hogwarts, relying on magic to do everything now, but Tom wasn't one of them. He still enjoyed working with his hands.
The laboratory was stocked with every type of cleaning supply he could need, with rags and cloths aplenty and many balms, creams and powders to help scourge and remove all traces of dirt and grime, themselves probably potions or made with magic. Tom scrubbed his cauldron down twice, a young man of character who wished to take care of the things he had.
His cauldron squeaky clean, he turned his attention to his work station, which he rubbed down with a rag. All of the tools he used were thoroughly washed and dried, and by the time he was finished it looked as if no one had been there at all. He had briefly considered making another serving of pumpkin juice as he had all the ingredients he needed, but he thought better of it.
"See ya," Tom waved to Arthur as he took his cauldron and made his way back to his dormitory to drop it off and go about his day.

Arthur grinned as he finished brewing his potion, however he frowned when he realized that Tom had asked him a question. Shoot, he should've answered that! He was still a little put out with Tom from earlier in the year, but he wondered if Tom knew that. Maybe if Tom wasn't such a...Arthur focused back on his potion. There was nothing he could do now, and besides, maybe he'd appeared cooler for being so interested in his potion.
Arthur casually but carefully ladled his Freeze potion into a vial, glad that he'd at least made it properly. When he was done with that, Arthur started cleaning his cauldron. Out of fear that Professor Snape would see him using a cleaning charm and think even worse of him, Arthur used the Muggle way to scrub it. It was the way he had grown up with, so he was more used to it anyways.
When he was satisfied, Arthur left in search of something else to do with his time. Maybe he'd find Oscar and see if his family was okay. Arthur really hoped they were. It would be awful if his friend's family was injured after Arthur had practically bragged to him this morning about how his family was fine.
