Sheer panic was not the best way to start off a new year, but that was how the Ashworths began their day -- with an alarm clock going off somewhere in the house, informing them they'd all overslept. Shockingly, Aubrey was actually awake and dressed -- lingering in the living room, waiting for Jaxen and Reena to get up, dressed, presumably packed, and ready to go.
She was miserably sad, not wanting to say goodbye again, but it was time for Jaxen and Reena to return to Hogwarts until the summer. As much as it hurt, even Aubrey had gotten used to this routine. So she just waited, clearly intending to see them off at the train station. Or at least get them there.
Their breakfast-on-the-go was from the grandparents' hamper, delivered over Christmas for the family to share. Aubrey nibbled at a pastry, trying to pay attention to what was going on so she knew when her kids were ready to go. She had her wand with her, and even remembered to dress warmly as the weather was not on their side today.

An alarm blaring somewhere in the house was what eventually roused Jaxen from a fitful sleep. He lay sprawled on his back, an arm draped over his face to block out the light that had begun filtering through the window. His whole body ached from the previous days events, and to move out of the warmth of his bed sounded as unappealing as snogging a grindylow.
Pulling the duvet over his head, he groaned as the alarm continued to blare without anyone challenging it. Didn't they know he was trying to sleep?
What time was it?
His eyes flew open. They'd overslept. Oh Merlin no.
Jax kicked off his duvet, flew out of bed and began rushing around his bedroom. Throwing last minute things into his trunk and occasionally holding his ribs which were still a bit tender from being thrown across his dads ultra secret laboratory the night before. He then slammed the lid of his trunk closed, making sure beforehand all of his christmas gifts were stowed away safely inside.
"REENA! WE OVERSLEPT, GET YOUR BUTT OUT OF BED!!!" Jaxen hollered as he dragged his trunk out of his bedroom and down the stairs at a record pace- almost knocking himself down the stairs a couple of times.
He was surprised to find his mother waiting downstairs in the living room, and opened his mouth to question it before thinking better. He didn't know what state of mind she was in, it was always difficult when they left for Hogwarts and although he was pretty relieved to be going back to school, he wasn't enthusiastic about leaving her alone again

“Bloody hell,“ she muttered as she shifted around and put the pillow over her head to drown out the alarm sounding from… somewhere. Who would put an alarm in the middle of the night anyway? Super rude.
She realised she was mistaken about it when she heard her brother shouting for her.
“Ugh. DAMN IT!“, she yelled back, anger masking her panic as she jumped out of bed in one swift motion, her pillow flying towards the foot of her bed. She could now see how bright it was already and she could feel her heart beat up her throat.
What would happen if they missed the train? Would they have to take the bloody Knight Bus all the way to Hogsmeade and then drag their trunks through deep snow all the way to Hogwarts? Not a very nice thought.
Reena sorted out the pillow and blanket situation, semi folding her little brother‘s blanket back onto his bed and getting hers from the door and threw it onto her bed.
She quickly got changed out of her pjs, put the children’s potions book into her trunk, decided to leave some worn socks by just kicking them under her bed. She would sort those out in summer. It was an awful thought that she would contribute to the mess even in such a small way but she didn’t have time to properly take care of it now.
“COMING!“, she shouted downstairs as she closed her trunk and gave the room a last quick glance over.
Satisfied she hadn’t left anything important she dragged her trunk down the stairs in the quickest and noisiest manner possible. Much to her surprise she found their mum waiting for her and Reena found it in her to smile at her when she reached for her Slytherin scarf and new (old) fox-ear-hat.
Her eyes fell onto the pastry her mum was nibbling and she figured with a regret that there wouldn’t be time for a proper breakfast.
She cast a brother a questioning glance if he was alright. She could drag both trunks if she had to.
Aubrey blinked in surprise as both of her eldest children all but came crashing down the stairs and into view, somehow managing not to be taken out by their own trunks. Yet another reason for everyone to be glad they didn't have to take pets into account.
She rose from the couch, checking herself over though seeming to forget why halfway through. Aubrey gathered some treats from the hamper, and passed several out to each Jaxen and Reena -- practically shoving them into what limited spare hands they had in insistence they didn't leave the house empty-stomached. Today was a good day, apparently.
'Let's go,' she said reluctantly, leading then out of the house. As always, Aubrey forgot to lock the door so it was only hopefully one of the kids remembered.
They passed through the protective barrier, and were unkindly welcomed by the cold snow and relentless winter. Aubrey barely reacted, then looked around as if already lost. What were they doing? Why was she out here? Oh yes, to lose her children again until the summer.
She turned to Reena and Jaxen, holding a hand out to each. They were going to apparate, as the Knight Bus would take too long considering they'd overslept. Especially if competing with those who were also on their way back to King's Cross. Aubrey's apparating was always a bit of a hit and miss, but she seemed lucid enough this morning to manage it -- sheer determination shone through, as she'd clearly done her best to be there for them today and get this done.
Once they held her hand each, they disappeared. Aubrey succeeded in apparating them in one piece to the designation point around the corner from King's Cross. All they had to do now was hurry to the platform, which she let them lead the way.
