Kevin took the scenic route to Hagrid’s Hut, enjoying the peace of not encountering anyone he knew. He was thinking over the information he got from the Hat, wondering if it would be worth the trouble of going after such rumours. That was all they were, rumours. Nevertheless, what a find and boon it would be if it actually were something.
The Slytherin found himself before Hagrid’s Hut before he even realized. Kevin looked around and didn’t immediately find Hagrid around the area, so Kevin knocked extra hard on the doors of the Hut. He didn’t know how thick the doors were, so Kevin put extra strength behind his knocks.
Kevin was looking forward to seeing Hagrid’s dog, Fang. He had a soft spot for animals and how they didn’t treat him any different which was a common occurrence with humans. He hoped Hagrid would let him pet Fang. Kevin wouldn’t even mind any fur or drool that might fall on his clothes.
Fang immediately barked at the louder-than-usual knocks, and Hagrid spilled his tea. No voice followed, so he glanced at his crossbow. Taking a moment to decide, he finally opted without it as Fang whined and scratched at the door.
'Who's there?' Hagrid asked, but got no reply. He yanked open the door, suspicion and wariness fading - thought not vanishing, when he saw the Slytherin boy. 'Hello there. What are yeh up teh?'
‘Hello,’ Kevin smiled, his eyes fixed on Hagrid’s face. The man was hard to understand by the boy since he had difficulties with any stronger accents. His attention was briefly caught by Fang and Kevin extended his hand, offering it to the dog for sniffing.
‘My name is Kevin,’ Kevin tried to enunciate as properly as possible. ‘I need a spare pot for Herbology and I was told I could get it here?’ he ended his explanation with an uptick in his tone, as he wasn’t sure he was at the right place. Kevin did wonder why he just couldn’t get on in the greenhouses. 'I am of course prepared to help in any way possible,' Kevin added and really meant it. He was helpful by nature and tried to volunteer for as many things as possible.
‘You have a wonderful [DOG],’ he smiled and looked down at the animal, wriggling his fingers in a playful manner.
Hagrid raised an eyebrow at the boy's accent, taking a moment to work out where he'd heard something like that before. Realising he might be deaf, Hagrid gave a friendly nod instead of answering. He headed back inside, rushing a bit as it was almost time for lunch and they were cutting it pretty close.
Fang eyed Kevin warily, though lay on his belly and wriggled a bit closer in curiosity. He watched the finger movements, his tail wagging.
'Knew I had one round here somewhere. Here yeh go,' Hagrid said, returning to heavily place a pot in Kevin's arms. He beamed, vaguely recalling the sign used had something to do with Fang. He indicated to a clock on the wall, giving the boy a stern look in reminder it was almost time for lunch.
He told Fang to stay, shut the hut door, then headed uphill towards the castle.
Kevin approached Fang carefully after he laid on his belly and moved closer, giving a scratch or two behind his ears, as he waited for Hagrid to return. He crooned senseless encouragements at the dog, petting up and down Fang’s body.
‘Such a good boy,’ Kevin nodded and gave a last scratch under Fang’s chin before jumping to his feet when Hagrid return with a larger pot than Kevin thought. It would be a pain to transport it all to the greenhouses. Kevin briefly wondered if he could use a spell to ease his way, but he was afraid of damaging the pot during transport.
‘Thank you Hagrid,’ Kevin smiled in gratitude. The man motioned to the clock and Kevin hissed when he saw the time. The morning seemed to pass so quickly, but then he did spend a lot of time searching for ingredients for Professor Snape. Would make sense.
‘Bye, Hagrid, thanks again! Bye Fang,’ Kevin hurried towards the castle, hefting the pot of soil with him. Since lunch would be soon, he decided to leave it in a safe space near the greenhouses where he would pick it up again in the afternoon. Kevin set out to do just that before making his way to the Great Hall.
