An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
Remy was a small girl, and that was putting it nicely. She was at least a head shorter than most of the kids in her year, and her frame was that of a spindly young tree: all limbs. So, it wasn't a surprise that, in the hustle and bustle of the morning, she got swept up in the crowd of students moving to their next class. At first, it wasn't too bad; she ducked and weaved around some of the first years leaving the Transfiguration classroom, but once they got mixed up with the older students, Remy found it hard to see over the crowd, and nearly impossible to walk among it. It was as if she was invisible, but she took comfort in the fact that she wasn't the only first year being jostled around; she was obviously not the only one feeling a bit lost.
Suddenly, someone knocked into her from her right side, sending her all but flying towards the wall. "Ahh!"a shout of surprise left Remy's mouth before she could stifle it. From her spot on the floor, she couldn't see who the person was that bumped into her; they were long gone. The echoing of the corridor made it impossible to distinguish conversations, too, and thus made it impossible to tell if anyone was laughing about her fall.
Instinct took over, and Remy got herself safely out of harm's way, pressing herself into the wall of the corridor and bringing her knees to her chest. It was only when the short burst of adrenaline had passed that she was able to properly assess herself: a dull throb was working its way through her left wrist, where she had caught herself, but it didn't hurt too badly. If anything, it was just a strain. Her confidence was much more bruised; how many people had seen her fall? Probably everyone, she thought wistfully, sitting against the wall for a moment to collect herself before rising to her feet.

Having just left the Staff Room, Anjay indulged an almost forbidden pleasure: he wandered.
Xcalyns believed that time was a resource, and like all resources, one had an obligation to use it wisely. To make the most of out it. To get the most out of it. It was why he had been taught for as long as he could remember to make schedules and stick to them and to only deviate when absolutely necessary. He never considered it rigid or imposing or constricting- it was just how he was taught to operate.
So intentionally walking around the Castle with no place to go felt something like what he assumed it felt like to sneak a sip of alcohol for the first time, or do something you knew was wrong but knew you could get away with. It helped knowing that Jurni was either still in her Charms lesson or just now getting out. He wouldn't wander for long, just enough to clear his mind of all the thoughts that swirled like an angry whirlpool on the edges of his consciousness.
He came upon a gathering of students making their way between classes and he stood a little taller and made sure his shoulders were back. Anjay adjusted his prefect pin so that it was not askew and gave it a quick buff with his the robe at his wrist. He marched into the crowd, hoping that the mostly younger students would part for him and allow him maneuver easily. He was halfway through the corridor when he heard the sound of whimpering coming from an odd corner.
Anjay sighed and turned, knowing what he would see before he laid his eyes on it- or her, rather. A student- a first year, by the looks of it, but she looked so young he wouldn't have doubted for a second if someone had told him she was below Hogwarts age- curled up in a ball and looking disoriented. A Hufflepuff. "Are you alright?" Anjay immediately went into prefect mode, extending a hand and offering to help her up.
Remy looked straight down at the floor over her knees, trying to ignore the passing stares of the other students. This wasn't like her; she would usually just get up and dust herself off- but then, she was at a new school in a semi-new world, and everything was just a tad overwhelming.
Suddenly, a voice rose above the clamor, and she looked up to see a hand. "Are you alright?" Remy's face turned a deep scarlet, and she peered up at the speaker with eyes not unlike a guilty puppy. "Yeah," she answered without thinking, taking the boy's hand gratefully and clambering to her feet. The gleam of his Prefect pin was hard not to notice, and the rich red accents of his robe informed her that he was a Gryffindor. "Thank you..." she paused, wondering if he would introduce himself.
Remy was unsure of what to do next. She could duck her head and walk off; after all, she had thanked him already. But, on the other hand, she knew once she was swept up into the crowd, it would be nearly impossible to maneuver her way to her next class.
Realizing she'd been standing and staring for a moment, she let her gaze wander back to the floor, turning a touch pink once again.

Coming from Snape's office Reena had not yet located Jaxen, having forgotten her map of the castle to cast the spell. Checking the list Mardling had given her she also realized she did not have any jars to put honey into once she found some either. Just great. She would have to collect different ingredients first then. She knew she could get Fluxygrass quite easily on the Expansive Lawn maybe she should go there first.
Turning a corner into the Main Corridor she was surprised by the bustle of students running back and forth, she must have come here at a busy time. Well. Maybe she would run into someone she knew and could ask for a map or about her brother's whereabouts.
It did not take long for her to spot Anjay Xcalyn among the crowd and made her way towards him. She did not know him more than a fleeting acquaintance and would usually not seek him out, since from what she had gathered Seabrook had him on her list or something of people not to interact with and Reena did not wish for trouble with the chronically angry girl.
She knew there was no way for Seabrook to be here right now though since she would be at Quidditch practice this morning so she felt safe to approach Jurni's older brother in peace. Reena noticed he was standing with a small girl, practically tiny and she raised an eyebrow, wondering if she was even old enough to be a first year.
Her Hufflepuff clothes told her that in fact she was and Reena put on a smile for her, just in case she was friends with her youngest cousin who was also a first year.
"Hello Anjay, hello-?", she looked at the Hufflepuff girl not wanting her to feel left out. Why had she called him 'Anjay' though? It sounded as if they were more familiar than they were. But calling him 'Xcalyn' would also sound weird, she did not call Jurni that but then again- she was her friend and partner in class... Nevermind what she had called him, she had to play it off now! She could feel her cheeks flush lightly in embarassment.
"You don't happen to have seen my brother Jaxen? Or have a map on you I could use?", she asked. Flashing him a smile she continued speaking: "If not, that's okay. I have to work on my potions kit anyway to further look into the Hat's quest and uhh..." She trailed off as she realised she was rambling and had just reavealed the possibly foolish idea that there was a real quest the Hat had sent her on to.
Why was she being so chatty? Probably still the shock about Jaxen's revelation from breakfast this morning. She cleared her throat.
Anjay felt it hard to empathize with students who felt out of place at Hogwarts, although he did his best to sympathize- or at least portray a type of sympathy- when the situation called for it. He himself had prepared his whole childhood to attend Hogwarts, and he had no idea what it must have felt like to be thrown into a world you didn't even know existed.
Yes, the more Anjay pondered it the more certain he was that this girl was Muggleborn and completely out of her element. It took some first years longer than others to integrate, and this girl- whatever her name was- had not grown up in the Wizarding world. He felt a sense of duty to show her kindness and make her feel less alone- if even just for this one interaction.
"I am Anjay Xcalyn," he said by way of introduction. Most times that enough would do, but he assumed this young muggleborn had no idea about the Xcalyn family. No bother. He almost went to ask for her name when their little soiree was interrupted by the Slytherin Ashworth. Anjay didn't know the Ashworths well, and knew the daughter even less well than he knew her brother, but she seemed more socially inclined than Jaxen.
"No, I haven't seen Jaxen since tea yesterday. And a map? No... I haven't needed one for years." The question perplexed Anjay. "Where are you going? Perhaps I could just direct you?" Words tumbled out of her mouth at rapid speed, and Anjay caught onto the most important parts: a potions kit for the Hat's quest? The Sorting Hat? Had Reena had an encounter with it too? He would have to ask her about it, but not in front of the first year.
"Ahh... potions kit." His mind was reeling. Did Reena say the kit was needed for the Hat's quest? Was Reena further along than he was? "I was just going to speak to Professor Snape myself." It started as a lie but became the truth as the words finished leaving his mouth. If he was going to need the kit eventually, he might as well get it now. Nevermind that his interest in potions before was almost nonexistent.
"Do you have a knack for Potions?" Anjay addressed the young Hufflepuff, trying to include her. "It is a magic unto itself and a necessary part to a well rounded magical education." He lapsed into salesperson and Hogwarts spokesman without even thinking about it. "I could show you the way, if you'd like," he offered, unable to turn off Prefect mode.

Having had a little more time to muse about the reason she had called Anjay Xcalyn by his first name she had come to the conclusion that it must have slipped out because that was what Jurni called him. That was just natural for siblings of course, she herself would never dream of addressing Jaxen as Ashworth. Reena must have picked up the name Anjay from her friend, referring to him that way in her mind.
That it had slipped out still made her feel awkward and if she never talked to Jurni‘s older brother again, it would be too soon.
“Bummer. Hope you had a good time meeting the Minister though.“, she said alas not really meaning it. Yesterday she had been really envious of everyone that got to go to Tea but now she knew her brother had not enjoyed himself and that kind of made her resentful towards Xcalyn, assuming he would take joy in the attention.
She furrowed her brows when he offered to point her into a direction, wondering if he thought she was dense or lacked any sense of orientation that she had somehow not picked up on the general out-lay of the castle that had been her home for a little more than three years now.
“No, thank you. I know my way around. I had hoped I could locate Jaxen on a map. But I guess I‘ll find him at Lunch.“ Reena shrugged. There would be time to discuss her family’s past with her brother later as she did not feel like going back to her dorm again to fetch a map of the castle.
Reena gave the Gryffindor a sharp look when he picked up on the potions kit. Was it her or did he look at her funny? He probably had caught her remark about the Hat‘s quest and must think she was a weirdo for talking to an ancient piece of clothing. That or he really wanted to go see Professor Snape.
She was relieved when he turned his attention to the tiny Hufflepuff girl and managed to smile, naturally slipping into a supportive role to the older boy just like she would do with Jaxen when talking to their youngest cousin. “Yes. It is a good idea to start early with getting into potions. Plus- once you have dealt with Professor Snape outside of class he does not seem all that intimidating in class anymore.“
She regarded the girl with a somewhat probing look. She looked really tiny and Reena hoped Professor Snape would be lenient with her- which was doubtful when she came with a Gryffindor to him.
“Be sure to speak up and make your intentions clear.“, she advised.
After that she said her goodbyes and disappeared into the crowd, the flush of red on her cheeks dissolving as she turned the corner towards the outsides.
Anjay decided after his brief interaction with Reena Ashworth that he liked her far more than he liked her brother. Where Jaxen had come across as shy, unsure of himself and somewhat awkward, Reena was confident, self assured, and sure of herself. He smiled at her, and briefly considered that she was the type of personality that would make a good match for him. It didn't seem the least bit strange to him that he was considering marriage partners for practical and not romantic reasons... not that he planned on proposing to her or anything like that.
“Be sure to speak up and make your intentions clear." Good advise for dealing not just with Snape, Anjay pondered. In just a few sentences the Slytherin girl had managed to make an impression on him like few had. He wanted to talk to her further, especially about her experience with the Sorting Hat, but it seemed like she was too preoccupied. Plus this wasn't exactly the best setting for it. "See you," he called to her as she left, the Hufflepuff girl on the floor almost completely forgotten.
The first year seemed to be shy, or just not that talkative. No bother. Anjay had never really been the type to shy away from attention or the spotlight, so he couldn't exactly relate, but he could try to empathize. His first year in the castle he had set out to make a name for himself, introducing himself to everyone he came in contact with, even 7th years. What was there to be afraid of? The wizarding world was small, much smaller in overall numbers than the Muggle world, which made connections and networking all the more important.
"I'm headed down to the dungeons to see Snape," Anjay told the first year. "Feel free to follow me down there if you'd like." With that he turned and headed to make his way to begin his Potions Kit, learn more about the Founders, and hopefully find a way to spend more time with Reena.
