His seeds potted and safely nestled in the Student Greenhouse, Tom made his way back to the castle just to get out of the sun for a while. It was interesting how there was so much excitement for today and yet the mood around the castle seemed as relaxed and carefree as he could remember.

He considered going back to his room to take a nap, but is that what a real potions master would do? Of course not, so he set out to gather more ingredients. He had seen in a few potions books that tarrow was a necessary ingredient for many of the potions he hoped to one day perfect.

He figured the best place to start looking was the kitchens. He figured now would be a good time to stop by since lunch had been over for a while and dinner was still a few hours off. Hopefully he wouldn't be bothering anyone too much by showing up at this time.

Making his way to the kitchens, he poked his head in the door and hollered out, "Excuse me!" to any house elves who might be in earshot.

His holler scared poor Sorbey, who'd been busy watching the commotion going on in the middle of the kitchens. Various elves were staring and scolding at another who, who sat on a chandelier trying to loosen one of the enchanted candles.

'Noody, stop it,' scolded another elf. 'You is to get down before you cause trouble.'

The elf, apparently named Noody, poked his tongue at her and resumed his mischief. Seeing a student had arrived, he blushed at being caught and shifted around on the chandelier so his back was to Tom. Though no one could see him trying to steal a candle now, it was obvious he was still doing it.

'You is needing something, sir?' Sorbey asked Tom. 'I is doing my best to help you.' She glanced over at Dippy who was still off by himself an staring into space. It had been quite a day for him and he needed more time before he could assist students again.

What was that house elf doing up there? Whatever it was it was obvious that the other elves were upset by it and trying to get it to stop. Tom found the behavior of these creatures fascinating, as he didn't even know they existed before he came to Hogwarts. Like everything else he'd seen, they were just part of a fairy tale before he got here.

"What's he doing up there?" Tom asked the elf who'd approached him, genuinely curious. Then, getting back to the task at hand, he said, "I was wondering if you had any spare tarrow you could give me for a potion I need to make?" he asked the house elf with a smile. Tom knew some students were rude to the elves so he always tried to treat them with respect.

'Noody is being Noody.' Sorbey sighed. 'Nothing you is needing to worry about, sir.' She fidgeted nervously, as if concerned he would get involved or tell them off. To help appease him, she hurried to get him the tarrow and record speed - almost vanishing by magic in the process.

'You is making Potions?' Sorbey stared in wide-eyed awe as she offered him a Tarrow in perfect condition. She'd made sure to get the very best one, as potion-making was a fickle type of magic where many things could go wrong.

She would know. Her old master used to make lots of them very badly, yet refused to let her help. Sorbey glanced at her hands, resisting the urge to stick them in boiling water. She was not a bad elf anymore. Not a bad elf...

'I is very happy to help you. I is Sorbey.' She beamed at him, proud to have met and helped him.

Noody. Huh. Did these house elves name themselves or were these names bestowed upon them by the humans who were their masters? Tom realized he'd never really thought about it, but he began to feel a tingle of sympathy for their plight. Unless they liked working in the kitchens for humans all day?

"Brilliant," Tom said as he inspected the tarrow. It was in beautiful condition. He was so thankful that he had decided to swing by here at just the right time! He racked his mind for any other ingredients that might be found in the kitchens but couldn't come up with anything.

"I'm making Potions, yeah," he responded to her with a sense of pride in his voice. "I'm going to be the greatest Potions master in the world." He didn't feel embarrassed saying it... it was a lofty dream, yes, but he intended to make it come true.

Sorbey gasped at his foresight, not realising Tom wasn't simply stating a fact. She was delighted to have met someone who was going to be the best at something so complicated.

'Then Sorbey is honoured to have helped you, sir,' she said. She was almost tearful in her joy of having contributed to his future success. 'If you is ever needing anything else for Potions, I is making sure you is getting it.' She nodded with determination.

She wondered if he needed anything else or if he was done, so simply waited to see.

Tom smiled at the elf. Funny little creature she was, so enthusiastic and serious. But in a way the emotional support he felt from her was like fuel for his passion. "I'll keep you to that, Sorbey. Have a great day, and thanks again!"

With that he slid the tarrow into his robe pocket and was off.
