As she was ushered through the halls with the other first years she realized that the stories were not exaggerated.
The castle really was as grand and wide as she had been told.
She took it in, with child-like wonder, the stress of her homelife forgotten- or at the very least pushed to the back of her mind- at least for the moment. The Great Hall opened up in front of her like all the opportunities it would hopefully hold for one so young and eager to prove herself.
She took a moment to look at the tables filled with students, trying to spot the familiar face of her older brother. Was Jaxen looking out for her? Would he even be disappointed if she was not joining him in Ravenclaw house?
She thought it unlikely as they were so different.
“Ashworth, Reena!“, her name was called.
Reena did not hesitate long, taking to the voice that had called her name with authority and took place on the stool as she was beckoned to. She glanced at the tables filled with students in the hall, barely able to contain her excitement and nervousness to her sorting.

The Great Hall vanished from view, as the hat was placed atop her head. There was an immididate response, in a voice only she could hear...
'Hmmm, an Ashworth. Yes...' said the hat. 'Plenty of ambition, I see. You're driven and loyal. Yet you wish to prove yourself... interesting, but where to put you?'
There was a brief pause.
'Ravenclaw, perhaps? You would do well there,' the hat said. 'Then again, Slytherin could help you on the way to greatness... no doubt about that.'
It went quiet to give Reena the chance to react and consider her options, as her opinions of the choices would help solidify where she belonged. What did she value most?

It was rather scary to hear a voice in her mind and she tried not to look around for a physical form other than the old hat on her head. It was the voices source after all and was doing her sorting by some means of magic the founders themselves may have even found reliable.
Ravenclaw? Her brother was there. She felt a pull in her chest yet it was not longing to be with her brother but restraint.
She had missed him a lot the last year, having to care for three younger siblings by herself but she had envied him for how much more his own he seemed to be even with just one year away in this place. Reena would love to spend more time with him again but would rather do so on her own terms.
Given the choice she could not pass up the opportunity to make a name for herself, independent from Jaxen. She would no longer live in shadows. Not in her brother’s and definetely not in her mother’s.
It was as the hat suspected. No sooner had she finished thinking it, had the hat raised its voice for the entire hall to hear.
The hat was removed from her head, revealing the Great Hall once again. The Slytherin table's applause was noteably more dignified and less noisy than the others had been, though their welcome of their newest member was no less friendly or curious. They beckoned her to join them, on the opposite side of the hall of where her brother sat.

Splendid, Reena thought as she waited for the Professor to lift the hat from her head. She had actually gotten her way for what felt like the first time in her life.
Slytherin‘s cheers guided her way to her house table and she sat down with a shy smile on her face as she greeted her house mates.
She could not help but shoot out a look across the hall towards the Ravenclaw table, the table she had almost gone to instead, yet she could not spot her brother in the masses. Reena hoped Jax would be okay with her choice- yet again- he would never need to know she even had it.
