Lindsey Bryce had managed to arrive at Hogwarts in one piece, though she was nervous and thrilled all at the same time. Both of her parents had sent her off to school with smiles and tears, her mother sending her with a porch of herbs to be placed in a tea to help with nervous jitters, mostly just lavender and chamomile with some peppermint for a bit of a bite. She had managed to not need it on the train, but she felt her stomach churning as they traveled from the station to the school. Lindsey would certainly need it tonight before bed to help her settle. Hopefully, she would be able to get some hot water in their room or at least at dinner.
Standing with the crowd, she prepared to be called at the beginning, mostly because she was a Bryce. While she had been in muggle school, she was always towards the front of the list. But it seemed they did not go in any particular order and she nearly jumped out of her skin when she heard the sound of her name.
"Lindsey Bryce!"
That was her, the sound of her name sounded so strange in an english accent. Lindsey was use to the Scottish sounds of her family and neighbors, but here there were kids from all over. Slowly, she made her way up, touching a stone amulet her mother had given her before she left, that was a going away gift. Sitting down, she waited on the stool, her fingers curled around the fabric of her cloak.

The hat's flap fell over her eyes, hiding the view of the Great Hall and its watchful students. It was quiet for a moment while the hat considered, then it spoke in a voice only she could here. 'Right then, yes...'
A pause.
'There's loyalty, I see. Plenty of bravery too,' the hat said. 'And determination...You would do well in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. There's no doubt about that.'
The hat was quiet again, seeking everything it needed to be confident with its decision.
'I see practicality in your logic. Yet there's balance to your intentions and methods - an interesting combination of resourcefulness and keeping to traditions.' It hummed in consideration. 'Slytherin would serve you well. Now then, where to put you?'
It allowed Lindsey the chance to react and have opinions on her three options, as what she valued the most and how she perceived herself or her goals would help determine exactly where she belonged.

As her eyes were hidden from the world, she tilted her head slightly, red hair falling from it's plait slightly and coming in front of her right ear. The sound of the voice seemed wise, she would have to listen well. The crowd in the hall seemed to go away once the hat was placed upon her own head.
"Right then, yes..." At the first words, she turned her head slightly the other way, her eyes closing themselves so she wouldn't have to see the bit of light below her nose that came under the rim. "There's loyalty, I see. Plenty of bravery too... And determination...You would do well in Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. There's no doubt about that." Though she had never thought about Hufflepuff, it was interesting to say the least. Her mother had said that the hat had gone back and forth on those two houses with her two. She smiled at the thought slightly, as her mother had been very smart and logical too, but her father extremely smart, logical and he hid his features so well, something her mother said she was able to do too.
Silence seemed to drag on for a moment and she thought maybe the hat was not going to speak again, but as it spoke, she tilted her head as if to listen, though she knew it was all in her head, because she hadn't heard the hat all night until now.
"I see practicality in your logic. Yet there's balance to your intentions and methods - an interesting combination of resourcefulness and keeping to traditions. Slytherin would serve you well. Now then, where to put you?" That was slightly surprising to her, since her father was a muggleborn.
"My mother told me 'bout slytherin... Aye, she told me that they were dark and many used the dark arts... I dinna think that would be one ye would suggest." She thought to the sorting hat, though she had no said she didn't want to be in the house, it just concerned her greatly that she might be a dark witch or wizard one day. Her father always told her that the company you kept could easily affect what you did. If she did got to Slytherin, then she was determined not to become a Dark Witch.
[OOC: Awe, I must of miss that in the rules. No Italic or bold either for thoughts and speech?]

'You've been misinformed,' said the hat. 'No house produces more dark witches or wizards than another. In any case, use or potential for the dark arts is not a criteria in which determines where you belong. Slytherins may often use any means to achieve their ends, but those ends can be any number of things. They are resourceful and ambitious, but the question remains: where to put you?'
The hat wanted to set the record straight before they proceeded closer to a confirmed decision. She was suited for three houses, including Slytherin, but to accurately narrow it down it had to make sure she didn't have the wrong impression of what being sorted to a particular house meant.
[Bold and italics is a preference, but absolutely allowed!]

"You've been misinformed." Lindsey opened her eyes, though the darkness of the hat was still around her, she just stared into the darkened folds of the hat, the little bit of light from the rim catching on her red hair that came from her plait. "No house produces more dark witches or wizards than another. In any case, use or potential for the dark arts is not a criteria in which determines where you belong. Slytherins may often use any means to achieve their ends, but those ends can be any number of things. They are resourceful and ambitious, but the question remains: where to put you?" Well, that was a relief and she seemed to relax a little.
Yes, she would certainly need that tea tonight before bed. Her nerves were shot or so it felt. Moving her hands slightly together, she felt her pulse and it was racing at her wrist. Inwardly, she thanked whatever that her mother had been a good healer. "Well, that is good then." She said quietly, though she was sure that maybe someone near by could have heard her. Though the hat was silent, she let out a shaky breathe and lifted her head.
"I honestly dinna kin where I would be best suited... Ye are wise and I trust ye to put me in the right house... My mother assured me that ye could be trusted to make this choice... I dinna trust anyone easily, but if my mother said ye can be, I will trust ya." The girl let out another shaky breath, her heart pounding against her rib cage so hard, she was sure that the professor beside her would hear it.
'Difficult, very difficult...' the hat said. Whispers began to spread through the Great Hall as a decision was yet to be announced. Lindsey would do well in any of the three options, so the hat needed to go deeper. If she did not have an outright preference, it needed more information. She was adaptive yet held to strong ways of thinking.
The moment dragged on, and whispers increased. That hat needed to be sure.
'Yes, right then,' it finally put everything together - her logic, her ambitions, her loyalty that was very selective, and of course her overall potential which should be nurtured by the house she belonged to. 'Better be...'
It took a moment for everyone to respond, given how long the wait and quiet were. Slytherins clapped and beckoned Lindsey with dignity and less noise than the other houses showed their newest members - yet they were no less welcoming. An older girl moved over to make room for Lindsey - waving so she was easily spotted.

"Difficult, very difficult..." Lindsey could barely hear the sounds around her from the hat covering her ears, but she knew she heard something, like that vague murmur of whispers that seemed to grow louder as everyone continued to wonder. Even she was wondering herself, what did this mean? Closing her eyes, she took in a deep, steady breath, trying to calm her nerves that was making her heart beat faster.
"It is alright, Lindsey... Ye will be fine." She thought to herself as she gripped the cloak slightly, stilling her own hands so as not to show her nerves to everyone. Her face was blank, at least, what could be seen of it, but her mind was running.
"Yes, right then..." What did he mean? Had he made a choice in her placement. Her eyes snapped open, but all she saw was darkness. "Better be...SLYTHERIN!"
After a moment, the sound of the hall was full of clapping and shouting, mostly coming from the table with the green flags that held the snake. As the hat was removed, she stood up and looked at the professor, giving a nod of thanks before she walked down the steps and to the table. As she got to the table, an older girl moved aside and Lindsey slipped into place beside her, smiling at all her new housemates and saying her own greeting before it went silent for the next person.
