Babineaux, Grace!
Her name! She was behind her sister, who had already joined her house, but she was thrilled to figure out where she would be. She hoped she would be in Gryffindor, like her mother, though doubted it would be an option. After all, she was the least likely of her siblings to break the rules. Grace stood up and faced the crowd of other first years and the tables of older students. She was a little nervous. What if the sorting hat knew her parents thought she was a Squib until she was seven? Would it think this was all some type of joke? She sat down and the hat was placed on her head.
Grace had no preference for which house she didn't want to be in, but of course it would be nice if they could've just sent her a letter beforehand for what to expect. She didn't like the way the hat felt, probing her mind, and didn't like the way the others were staring at her. She wondered if people recognized that she and her sister had the same surname, if they would notice when her brother was called up. She fiddled with her robes. She wondered if it really was taking so long, or if she was just imagining it. She wished she had her trusty Tinker Bell watch, but she knew tech didn't work in Hogwarts. She felt the hat stalling in its decision.
Get on with it! Tell me where I am so I can sit down or I might scream!
When the hat was placed on her head, its flap fell over her eyes and obscured the Great Hall from view. There was a pause before the hat spoke, and when it did it was with a voice only she could hear.
'Right, then,' it said. 'Interesting. You've a ready mind, I see. Your dream of adventure and greatness, yes. You would go far in Gryffindor, there's no doubt about that. It's all here, in your head. Gryffindor suits you well.'
A pause.
'Then again, perhaps Hufflepuff? Optimism, hard-working...Yes, it's a possibility.' The hat kept looking, determined to do its job well as it always did. 'But with ambition such as yours, Slytherin may be the place for you?'
The hat went quiet, awaiting her reactions to the three possible outcomes. What she valued most, her thoughts on the options, and anything else revealed in that moment would be key to confirming where the hat placed her.

Grace struggle with the decision. She thought she would like Gryffindor best; she idolized her mother, wanted to be like her, wanted to make her proud. On the other hand, she wasn't sure she would fit in with the Gryffindor crowd, they seemed much louder than her. But maybe it was a nice balance. In any case, her sister wasn't there.
Hufflepuff, Grace considered. She was loyal, she thought they would be good friends. But she didn't feel as emotionally connected to the house as she did Gryffindor, and emotions were everything to her. Besides, her older cousin on her mom's side always made fun of Hufflepuffs. No, Hufflepuff was not the house for her.
As she considered the last option, Slytherin, weighing it against what she thought of Gryffindor. She liked the ambitious reputation. That would see her far in life, but she knew Slytherin had a history of blood purity feelings.
If it really is up to me, she thought, rather timidly, I'd like to be in Gryffindor. They can challenge me more, and I'm always up for a challenge.
'Yes,' said the hat in agreement, sounding quite pleased with itself. 'You belong in...'
Loud applause erupted from the Gryffindor table, which she heard before the hat was ever removed from her head. Professor McGonagall gave her a nod of approval, then resumed her attention to the list of first years still awaiting their sorting.
A Gryffindor girl hardly a year older than Grace beckoned her to the table, which was now Grace's house table to. The girl, and a few of her friends, shuffled over on the seat to make room for their newest member.

Grace sat down at the table. Gryffindor! She was in Gryffindor. Her mother would be so proud, and she had no doubt her father would too, though he knew less about the magical world. "Hello!" she greeted her housemates as she sat next to them, politely looking up at the next person up, her brother.
