Autumn had a free period so, after breakfast, she went out to the courtyard and found a seat on an empty bench. The air outside was beginning to cool as fall began. Nonetheless, the sun shone through some cloud cover and her cloak kept her warm enough. There were a few other students wandering the courtyard, but not many.
Autumn rooted through her bag and pulled out her sketchbook and a set of pencils. She flipped through the pages, passing drawing of everything from lakes to fanciful creatures before landing on a blank page and lifting a pencil. She looked up for a moment, scanning the courtyard before she began to sketch it on the paper. She took a direct focus on the other students in the courtyard first, lest they move while she drew them.

Mathias almost walked into a stone pillar in his rush to get to the courtyard. He had a string in his mouth that he tried to extend with one hand but couldn't reach far enough. He huffed and looked around, spotting a fellow Ravenclaw classmate.
'Hey, Autumn - you got a minute?' Mathias smiled as he approached, offering her one end of the string. 'Hold this.' He waited to see if she'd take it, though offered no further explanation, then carefully paced himself five feet away while holding tight to the other end.
Anise walked into the courtyard, looking curiously at the two Ravenclaws, intrigued and wondering what they were doing with a string. She watched for a moment before finding a bench to sit on and pulling out a book on healing spells that she had taken from her father's collection before leaving home for the term. She skimmed through it, committing some of the more interesting incantations to memory to research later. Some she was familiar with, others were new, and some seemed pointless, though you never knew what you'd need to know one day.
She quickly lost interest in the book, thinking that she had plenty of time to learn later, and she stifled a yawn, still not fully awake even after a decent breakfast. She didn't have any plans or anyone to make plans with, and was quite bored. She wished she had more in common with her roommates, as they seemed to be getting along amazingly and were off doing things together, not caring to invite her. Used to being overlooked and ignored, as she was pretty different from her housemates, Anise was accustomed to having to entertain herself. With a sigh, she opened her book again, thinking there was nothing better to do, and sitting alone and not occupied was extremely awkward.
(OOC: Sorry, I posted earlier, but I had completely missed Mathias' post so I rewrote it. So sorry.)
Autumn lifted her gaze as she saw a fellow fifth year Ravenclaw, Mathias, walk into a pillar. A small, amused smile appeared on her face as she watched him struggle with a string. Before she knew it, he offered her the string as well. She placed her sketchbook on the bench and took the string then watched curiously as he began to walk a small distance away. "What are you up to, Mathias?" she inquired.
Autumn was vaguely aware of another girl who watched them for a moment before moving on to read a book. It seemed slightly odd to see a Slytherin alone without a posse of friends, but she brushed off the thought and returned her attention to Mathias'... experiment? She couldn't quite figure out what he was doing, so she awaited an explanation.

Mathias' reply was mumbled incoherently as he had a roll of parchment in his mouth at the time. He needed more hands, honestly. How else was he going to get all of this done at once? He stretched the string out as far as it would go, which honestly wasn't all that far. The angle was weird though, which put him by the Slytherin.
'Oi...You.' He really should remember his classmates' name by now but was too busy thinking of a million other things at once. 'Hold this, please?' He offered the Slytherin girl his end of the string.
Mathias often found members of his own house were pretty keen and curious by his experiments, then Hufflepuffs were just a bunch of helpful and hard-working lot. Gryffindors were a bit trickier to predict, but Slytherins were by far the hardest to convince to participate when he was in a rush of trying new things. So he decided to wait to see if the girl was one of the Slytherins willing to help him out or if he looked far too untrustworthy today.
While waiting, he gave Autumn a smile and raised his voice in case she had any trouble hearing him otherwise. 'I haft mopo--' He quickly removed the parchment, peering at it once, then tucked it into his pocket. 'I meant to say: I have more theories about balancing seeds.'
Now, to anyone else that was news without context. To Autumn, who had the misfortune of sharing a common room with Mathias, that would make more sense. He had taken to collecting some weird seeds that were said to have special balancing abilities but he'd yet to see much proof of it in less boring ways. The string method was looking promising though and he was excited to try it before he got caught up in all his other plans for the day.
[OOC: That's fine, I'm glad it's sorted now. Happy to RP! Though Mathias didn't actually walk into a pillar - just almost haha.]
Anise looked up instinctively when Sallow wandered closer to where she sat, puzzled and curious as to what he was doing with strings and parchment. Her eyes followed him as he came closer, and didn’t think twice to take the string he had offered as she tried to figure out exactly what he was up to.
“Balancing seeds?” She asked, her tone a mixture of curious and criticising, “What on earth…”
She stared at his setup for another moment, then asked, “Are you going to balance seeds on the string, or what?”
While his behavior was somewhat odd to Anise, she could appreciate the sight of a mind at work and was genuinely curious to decipher what was happening and what he was so intent on learning. Abandoning her book on the bench, she stood and took a step towards him, asking, “Do you need any help with that?”
Autumn looked more closely at the other girl as Mathias involved her in the experiment too. She recognized her from some of her classes as another fifth-year. Landry, unless she was mistaken.
From what she had seen, the girl seemed slightly out of place as a Slytherin. She seemed too nice. Autumn was glad for that. It assured her she wasn’t the only one who had trouble fitting in.
She hadn’t really talked to Landry before as she hadn’t had the chance, so she watched curiously as the Slytherin took the string. She had curious eyes, much like the other Ravenclaws she’s met. Slytherins tended not to be interested in such experiments.
Although Autumn understood the short explanation, it was clear that Landry didn’t. "This wouldn’t exactly be new for him. He’s been collecting seeds with alleged balancing abilities for a while and I think he’s looking for a way to find proof right now,” she tried to explain. She glanced at the string, then her gaze went quizzically to Mathias. "This should prove interesting if it works,” she added.
A bit of jealousy welled up in her, but she pushed it down before it showed on her face. If this worked he’d have proven his theory, which was more than she’d done so far. She’d recently taking up an experiment of her own, but she’d made no headway. Not enough to share it with her fellow students, anyway.

'Yes.' Mathias grinned at Anise. 'That's exactly what I'm going to do, in theory. It's not very strong though, could you two come closer?' He directed the girls until they were only about eight feet apart, and adjusted the string to be straight but not too tightly pulled.
'Alleged?' Mathias scoffed good-natured at Autumn. 'The theory is all there. I can show you my notes, if you like? I've just yet to figure out the exact calculation and method of which they balance on non-natural elements or environments. A piece of yarny-string, for instance. I've given it a wax coating too, and not the cheap candle kind.'
They might have noticed that while holding it but he wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't since it was a thin layer and didn't feel all that wax-like, just weird.
'It should work,' he added. Mathias leaned so he was at eye-level with the string, hand on it to adjust any small inaccuracies. His other hand held the seed - an orange-sized, bramble-looking thing. 'My dad sent it to me, says it was from Africa. They've got more at home and are going to try growing it in one of our spare acres.' He beamed proudly, though his focus remained on the string and getting his little experiment ready.
Autumn moved closer at Matthias' direction. "I actually would be interested in seeing your notes," Autumn smiled, "But until you have the exact calculations, I'm still considering their balancing abilities to be alleged."
Autumn watched Matthias work before asking a question she'd been curious about for a while. "What, exactly, would be the point of balancing seeds? What are the benefits?"Why are you working so hard, she added silently, wondering if there was any reason at all besides sheer curiosity.
(OOC: If you want to close up the thread in the next few posts I'd be alright with that.)

'Remind me later - they're in my dorm, somewhere,' Mathias said. Where did he put those notes? Apart from the extra ones he scribbled on his rush there.
He raised the seed above the string, ready to try it out, but waited while Autumn asked him a question. Best not to get distracted. 'Some seeds are meant to balance or may be able to, in the right conditions. It's so fascinating! No one really knows why they do it, but some seeds behave in weird ways or give off weird smells when they balance. I want to see what for myself and maybe figure out why they do it and what it means for their survival.' He explained it in a rush, excited to get started and loving the whole concept.
'Besides, I want to prove I can do it.' Mathias gave her a cheeky grin, as she still considered his task to only be an alleged concept.
Unable to wait any longer, he delicately placed the large seed on the string. It wobbled for a moment, and he gasped in excitement. Then the seed shot off the string and smacked him in the forehead. With a yelp of surprise, Mathias tumbled backwards and grabbed the prickly seed. He grumbled incoherently and shoved the seed back into his pocket.
'Not the right wax,' he mumbled. He grabbed some random parchment and scribbled more notes - checking the breeze and the string and anything else he believes influenced his failure. Mathias wasn't put out by it, only the fact the seed was ouchy when it hit him.
'I'll figure it out sooner or later.' He huffed, straightening on his feet again. He opened his mouth to saying something, but gasped and quickly checked the time. 'Blimey! I'm going to be late. I promised I wouldn't forget. Gosh, okay - er, thanks for the help. I gotta go.' He grabbed the string and stuffed things into his pockets then fled the courtyard in a rush.
[OOC: Yeah, Mathias needs to be at the lake now. But this was fun! I hope we can RP again soon.]
Autumn nodded. An interesting concept. She didn't see quite how beneficial things activated by balance could be. Her mind raced to figure out the reasons that seeds would evolve so. Maybe if they were in such a position they would emit a smell to ward off animals? But it seemed difficult to bring them to balance based on Matt's ongoing struggles.
Proving he could do something, on the other hand, was a concept that Autumn was altogether familiar with. She silently wished him luck as he placed the seed on the string. She held her breath as it wobbled, truly hoping that it worked.
When the seed shot back at Matt's face, she bit her cheeks to contain a giggle. "On the bright side, you were close," Autumn said, studying the wax on the string. "Good luck!" she added as he rushed off. (OOC: Yeah, me too.)
