Pierce Twigg's Sorting Ceremony

Before his glasses could be knocked down completely by the hat, Pierce quickly but with a sigh removed them from his face, holding them with one hand. He not taken into account the size of the hat and that it would obscure his vision, otherwise he would have already secured them beforehand.

Suddenly, a voice rang in his ear. As Pierce had expected something would happen upon the hat being placed on top of his head, instead of being startled he just listened to the voice, apparently belonging to the hat.

Pierce was difficult? … Well, if one would ask his family, they would surely agree. Although, he could say this about his prank-loving brothers as well.

He waited for the hat to continue, but was only greeted in silence. Did he need to do something? How did it work? It was a hat who did the sorting. Sure, a magical hat, but still…

As if to make sure that it was indeed a hat sitting on top of his head, Pierce felt the rim of the hat with his free hand. Yeah, felt like one, at least that part. What about…

Luckily, before he could continue to probe the hat more, it continued its talk, catching the attention of Pierce again. As it listed his traits, he nodded in agreement. This definitely sounded like him!

Another pause. This time even longer. Or shorter? Pierce couldn’t tell, so he started to count to get a feeling for it.

One, two… He got only to ten when a sudden, exciting thought occurred to him: Was that the thing someone called a hatstall? That was intriguing!

But why did one happen anyway? Over what did the hat ponder so long? Did it search through his mind? Well, if it did, that would explain it. The hat would need to comb through a lot of knowledge Pierce had already acquired.

However, how did the hat use that knowledge to determine a house?

Finally, the hat proposed two houses and a question. Ravenclaw or Slytherin.

Although Pierce was aware that the tone of the hat implicated it needed involvement from Pierce himself, he still waited for a brief moment in case it had to add something, before he thought deeper about the choice.

Of course Pierce had properly prepared himself ahead for the sorting. He had questioned his family until they were getting annoyed by it, then he read books about the topic. He loved to be thoroughly informed. Good thing he did, because apparently he could use now this knowledge.

Initially, Ravenclaw had intrigued him. High tower, best views, a common room with stars and constellation? Sounded perfect for someone as astrophile as him!

But why would he ever decide his Hogwarts House according to an aspect like that? The Ravenclaw Tower itself was just another location one would live in. He could always go up to the Astronomy Tower to watch stars! Or from somewhere else.

No, a Hogwarts House meant something more.

While Pierce knew that, it was still difficult to grasp it completely.

So, what did he want?

It would definitely be nice to join the same house as Sam, the same as his Dad had been in. For once, he would share an important part of him with members of his family.

However, as this thought occurred to him, it somehow sat wrong with him. Perhaps because he didn’t feel like it was accurate for him to be in the same house as his brother. Or maybe because he actually liked that he was indeed different than the others.

And if he joined Slytherin, he could provide stories for his family, none of them ever had the chance to hear about! Or find knowledge that his siblings could never procure because they were not in this particular house? Knowledge which could help his family and him improve?

An exciting grin appeared on Pierce’s face, with a content feeling in his heart.

Yes, it clearly was the unfamiliar Slytherin house he was drawn to.
