Samuel Twigg's Sorting Ceremony

Sam was surprised by the nerves racing through his body. He'd thought about this moment so often that it seemed sure to be easy and relaxed, but Sam's heart beat in his chest as though he'd sprinted up fourteen flights of stairs.

He gripped the edge of the stool as the sea of faces disappeared - the Hat was on, and everything else fell away.

The Hat didn't complain that another Twiggs was being sorted, but Sam smiled, wondering if the job of sorting siblings was any harder than others. Were twins more difficult, at that?

As the Hat pondered in low tones about his fate, Sam pondered about the Hat. It was just a part of Hogwarts, but he wondered if anyone ever got to have a proper conversation with the Hat - maybe he'd be the first to ask about it's deep and interesting lore?!

Now wasn't the time though.

He sat straighter, smiling as the Hat called him 'adventurous' and 'daring' - he was! It was good to know that those traits were recognisable within him.

He knew Gryffindor would be a great house to join, so full of bravery and teamwork, and Mum would be extra delighted. He knew it would be a perfect start to his adventurous career...and yet. 

"Dad is brave too...He's probably the bravest person I know, and he was in Ravenclaw, not Gryffindor..."

It was a hard choice, if he was even being given one. Like trying to choose between the road well-traveled and one overgrown yet familiar.


"I want adventure," he said quietly, his leg jiggling with nervous energy. "But Dad said sometimes adventure begins with research and preparation..." 

Oh, the Hat was very good at it's job. 

Sam felt as though the fog that had been swirling around his dreams of the future had become that little bit clearer. The Hat's words resonated deeply with him and clarified his choice. 

Sam's mouth fell open in a small 'oh' of surprise, because he didn't really see this coming. Yes, he sought glory, of a sort, and sometimes he dreamed about running into the fray of a battle to defend his friends.

But most of his dreams, daydreams and wishes were full of the unknown. The undiscovered.

"Let me go into Ravenclaw, Sir Hat," he said, smiling wide. "I want to see what will happen."
