year two #9-11
What a busy Christmas I had! I'm managing to squeeze in writing this between going home and breakfast. Don't ask how, I'm running on fumes honestly!
Japan was truly amazing. I'm so grateful to my parents for the opportunity to see such an incredible country.
Of course, it wasn't all wonderful.
I didn't really enjoy how we travelled to Japan, in those rotten flying carriages. Oh, I'm sure my idiot brothers (not including Pierce, of course) had a wonderful time in their carriage. I just don't like being up in the air and helpless like that. Coming across the dragon only helped to solidify those feelings. Don't get me wrong, they're majestic creatures but I prefer them much further away from me.
Why isn't anyone else talking about how often we have seen dragons in the past few months? I swear I've seen more lately that I've ever seen in my entire sixteen years of existence!
That being said, the rest of the trip was simply amazing. We had a guide, Masuyo, who showed us the most wonderful, The Museum of Magical Artefacts! There were even some exhibits related to Cursebreakers -- which is my chosen career. I had been on the fence about putting myself on that track but seeing how they function in another country helped to open my eyes to the diversity in such a career.
Curse-Breakers, as it so happens, originated right here in Japan. They do so without wands!
I couldn't believe it when Masuyo told me this. I wonder if it's possible to study a year or two in Japan, once I'm done with the Academy... Ugh, maybe not. The cost would be insane... Sigh.
I did ask about the magical tree in the Museum since I wanted to talk to Caleb about it, since I figured he would be interested or might even know something about it?
It just sprouted here one day -- and has grown then flourished since. It's home to a few magical creatures and plants that are also mysterious, but we leave them alone. This tree is, perhaps, the most protected in this entire place. We consider it the Museum's heart.
Such an incredible tree. It makes me sad to think no one really knows much about it now.
But the fun didn't stop there. Masuyo had arranged (I assume? Or perhaps it was because of dad?) a dinner with some others. There was the most intriguing character there, who we were told was the Caretaker of the Sacred Mountain. He used a brush instead of a wand and seemed to be very old and wise. I wish we had more time to spend in his company but the time seemed to fly by.
We were given a very sour tea to drink and, as the oldest sibling, I was encouraged to drink not just one but three cups of it! I was determined not to insult our hosts and do so though my stomach didn't feel so good afterwards. No one mentioned it however so I think I passed.
The next day we got to visit a gift shop and I was able to pick up something for my friends. Snacks for Sophia -- I think she would really enjoy trying sweets from another country. For Jaxen I got some watercolours that, I think, change colour everytime the tin is opened and closed? It was hard to tell since I don't speak Japanese but I'm guessing their function from the packaging. Regardless, I think he will find them useful and fun.
I also got something for Caleb. He is a new friend of mine and someone I wish I had tried to befriend sooner. It's funny how you can be in the same year and house as someone else and yet barely know them.
I got him a little Japanese plant helper! It will help to keep a chosen plant regularly watered and find the ideal amount of sunshine for them. I'm not certain how it works but I hope he likes it.
Listen, I even picked up something for Natalie.
Sure, we don't really get along -- but we have some things in common too! She did help out Jaxen with the cape for his little brother so I hope she likes the material I got for her. It's not much but I think a small token is a good step forward.
Alright, I should head downstairs now. Mum is calling and we are going to leave for school soon. I'll update this Journal later on too, but with a fresh entry. I think I've written enough for this one!

year two #11 afternoon
Just another update about today, since I didn't get a chance to write about what happened when I got back to school.
The journey to Hogwarts was actually pretty nice. I didn't have any Prefect duties to take care of so I was free to sit with friends -- I ended up in a compartment with Caleb and Jaxen joined us.
Caleb seemed to have a good time at the Nature Reserve... He didn't really talk much about it but I got to meet the cactus he rescued. I hope I can run into him again and talk some more.
Jaxen didn't seem to talk much about his Christmas either, so it was mostly me talking about Japan and passing out the gifts I had got for both of them.
The morning was pretty much over by the time we arrived which meant we had just enough time to sign up for the Duelling Tournament. Caleb went off by himself but me and Jaxen decided to try out.
I haven't been as serious with my Duelling practice as I probably should be (especially with the career I'm considering...) so I hoped this would be a good chance for me to improve.
And then I was knocked out in the first round by second year!
In my defence, she's a pretty formidable second year. First Quidditch and now Duelling... What is up with that year group? Jaxen passed his first duel without any issues but it was hard to get close to him to talk in between.
I decided to take a break from the craziness of the Duellist Chamber and ended up going to visit some Nifflers. The sandpit is kinda cool to see when there's snow everywhere else and nothing on the sand. I wonder if Professor Fairburn has some special spells in place to keep the Nifflers safe and sound? I ended up meeting a different Niffler called Simon (he wore a collar and a name tag!) and he led him to this cool area that the Nifflers seemed to live in.
It truly was a treasure hoard for them!
Turns out there was a Golden Lens there that he didn't want stinking up the place (or so I imagine from his reaction) so I offered to take it for him and find where it belonged. This seemed to appease him.
I hope I can find Simon again and let him know I managed to return the Golden Lens...
But before that, I ran into Pierce and we both decided to ask Natalie for a card reading. We wanted to start the Divination Extra-C and today seemed like the best time. I don't know what Natalie's reading for Pierce was as I arrived a bit later but her reading for me seemed... Well...
She didn't seem too impressed by it.
Let me see if I write down everything she said...
'Raven's Cry, a Guide card. It means that achievement doesn't come from overworking yourself, but rather from not allowing a fear of failure to hold you back.'
It's not always fear of failure, literal. Can also be worrying that something won't be worth it, or afraid of stepping outside your comfort zone in case it doesn't get you what you want, but you know how the saying goes: you miss all the opportunities you don't take.'
I'm not sure how that is going to factor into my future but I'll have to keep an open mind and look for the signs.
After that, I went to return the Golden Lens while Pierce went to the Forest Path to do the next Div EC task.
The Astronomy Tower had to be the write right location. There's no way my gut wasn't correct about this and -- ha, I was right. Though it wasn't the main upper area I had to go to but a smaller balcony a few levels down. It looked incredibly ancient, like it has been part of the Castle since it was created but it didn't look like anyone had been there in a while.
Still, the telescope was there and I was able to fit the lens back on.
And yes, I took a peek because I couldn't help myself.
I have to admit, it's a bit hard to put into words what I saw -- it was incredibly beautiful and astoundingly magical. It was just one of those profound experiences that someone has to witness for themselves.
After that, I headed back to the Forest Path to wait for Pierce. I couldn't find him but I did manage to get a jar of honey I needed. I then decided I would let loose my own beetle and see what this second task had in store for me.
Wow -- what a journey. I know I can't write down what happened because Pierce told me all his notes disappeared. It was amazing but I have to try again.
Bet Natalie didn't fail with this task.
Anyway, I went to find Pierce and found him in the Boathouse. I may or may not have accidentally scared him but I talked to him about the Div task, the Golden Lens and the balcony.
He decided he wanted to see it for himself and I decided to head back to the Duellist Tournament, so we parted ways. It was a lot of fun spending time with Pierce and working on things together. I know it's not always 'fun' or 'cool' to hang out with your older siblings so I appreciate that he let me tag along and we got to bond a little.
I finished the afternoon at the Duelling tournament and got to see Jaxen in the finals.
Sure, he didn't win but I'm incredibly proud of him. He's such a skilled Wizard, in more ways than one, and I hope he knows that. Perhaps I shall have to just tell him some day so he does know!
Had dinner after that and then hung out with Sophia in our dormitory. We stayed up waaaay too late talking and eating snacks but it was so nice to be reunited. I've managed to write this entry because she fell asleep first haha.
Tomorrow is going to be a busy day so I'd better go to sleep too.

year two #12 morning
Another exciting day at school it seems! Is it because I'm a sixth year now? It just seems like everything is so non-stop and it makes my head spin trying to keep up with it all...
Breakfast brought with it a lot of updates and chabnges changes. The Frog Choir is no more (R.I.P) but instead we have three new clubs to choose between. They are bound to be good on an Academy application so I made sure to sign up for now. I decided on Archery since I felt it would be the best for my future career.
I got to sit with Sophia and Jaxen during lunch and then headed off to the Apparate lesson. Poor Sophia... I dragged her out of bed for breakfast but she didn't have any classes today! Sorry!! So she went back to our dormitory and I had the joy of watching Elizabeth Doren get spliced!
Yeah... Poor girl.
After that delightful experience, I decided to tackle the Divination Extra-C again. Followed another beetle and completed the task. That's all I can say since... Well, anything else I try to write down just disappears. So take my word for it. I felt empowered to continue, however, and sought out Professor Traddles.
I don't know how my classmates feel about him but I quite like him as a Professor. He's a little distracted at times (perhaps?) but I've grown to trust his intuition about things.
I met him at the Forbidden Forest which is definitely somewhere I wouldn't go without a teacher along. That place just gives me the creeps and I've heard stories about SECOND YEARS venturing in like it's no big deal!? That is totally not going to end well. I need to warn Tobias not to copy his little classmates and be SENSIBLE about something for once.
But the experience in the forest had been really eye opening. I'm still a complete novice when it comes to Divination things but it was incredible to meet Gelian and have his guidance. I built a fire the way my dad taught me and it brought back some memories...
Alan Twiggs had shown off some Muggle matches, as he taught them how to make a camp-fire one autumn evening. Without magic! Martha, at the age of seven, and Pierce, at the age of five, had been keen students -- though their brothers weren't as interested that day, having discovered some glowing grubs under a log.
She couldn't remember where they were, only that it wasn't too far from home. The purpose was for Alan to spend some time with his kids, after being swamped with work so much he'd barely gotten to see them for weeks.
They sat on a picnic rug, admiring the stars and warmed by the fire. He'd made them Muggle s'mores, having read about them -- though they didn't quite turn out how they were supposed to, everyone enjoyed them.
Martha had made a camp-fire once or twice since then, but there was rarely any need to light it the Muggle way. Especially once she learned the Fire-Marking spell herself. Still, her father's words about the importance of using dry sticks and leaves were still imprinted clearly in her memories, as if she'd heard him say it a hundred times.
It was fun to think about the time we made those s'mores together or when my dad was so excited to show us how matches worked.
Of course, this time I made my fire using magic! And then when I burned my ingredients together, I had a vision. I will try to record it to the best of my ability here since I think it's important to remember as much about it for the future...
From Martha's perspective, the smoke and sparks of the fire mixed with magic as she burned the three ingredients -- and grew to swirl around her, glittering and smoky, until nothing remained but that and her.
She caught glimpses of sounds or images -- first, her younger brother Tobias zooming after a Snitch on his brand new broomstick. Then her mother, covering her mouth as she held back sobs while hearing someone behind her having already lost that battle.
And finally, Martha saw herself walking along a forest-y path. Vision-Martha kept her back to her then glanced up, watching a dragon flying overhead, though her attention remained there.
At first, it seemed the smoke was getting darker, but Martha soon realised it was the sky in the vision itself. Not smoke, but storm clouds -- swelling and twisting, darkening just before rain began to pour down on vision-Martha. Her wand was in hand, and she slowly turned -- but before Martha could glimpse her own face, the magical smoke and its vision cleared.
Like I said, I'm a complete novice when it comes to this stuff but I tried my best to parse some kind of meaning from it all. Gelian didn't seem too impressed with me but I won't be too offended by that. I think a human trying to do Divination is probably like a baby to a Centaur.
It did give me a lot to think about and now I gotta hurry off for lunch. I've already wrote a lot but I'll be back later and write more after I'm done with things this afternoon. I have my Ministry internship so I'm really nervous and excited about it.

year two ravenclaw vs slytherin match
Believe it or not I went to the Quidditch match -- and I even made some bets. Listen, I went with Tobias and he was so excited about his friend playing that I couldn't say no when the topic of betting came up.
I didn't spend too much money but it would be nice to win something from it all.

year two #12 afternoon
Back again!
Of course this afternoon started with Potions class... I try so hard with that class but somehow I always manage to do something wrong. I haven't made my cauldron explode yet, thank Merlin but for some reason brewing a perfect potion is out of reach for me.
I can tell Professor Snape isn't impressed with me either. It feels like I haven't made any improvement at all this year. I should probably focus on brewing a potion outside of class time which might help.
Which means I need to collect more ingredients... Yay.
I'll worry about that later.
Listen, I was with Caleb in class since Jaxen arrived after us but something was definitely up with him. It looked like he had been attacked or something! Not to mention the smell that followed him. I might not be an expert on boys but I do have younger brothers and I know the smell of a dung bomb all too well.
I didn't get a chance to talk to Jaxen about it since I had to rush off after class for my Internship...
I'm worried he might think I'm avoiding him so I definitely need to speak with him either tonight or tomorrow sometime.
ESPECIALLY since I had a very interesting and informative internship! I got to work with Curse-Breaker Kahn (Hyo Kahn). From the way everyone else talked about him, he definitely has to be a massive deal. Not to mention he was rather handsome too. I had a hard time keeping eye contact with him. Surely it's unfair for someone to be so good-looking?!
Sophia will probably appreciate listening to me talking about him haha...
Anyways, I was given a case report to work on and fill out a form for. I know this might sound bad but I actually enjoyed doing that a lot. It felt like a riddle and I had to find all the clues to answer the questions.
I just hope I did a good enough job.
Curse-Breaker Kahn also gave me some good advice about Academy applications as well. I made a quick note of what he said but I'll try and write down everything so I have a reference for it later...
'You want to stand out on your application. There are many good ways to do this. But if you to be remembered, go for the extraordinary. It is not just about what you learned or did, but experiences. Perspective. Make sure at least one thing in your application is unusual.'
Now I just need to figure out what's a good, 'unusual' thing to add to my application. I get the feeling that it's not as simple as being a Prefect. I'll write home to mum and dad about it -- maybe they'll have some advice about what to do?
I'll definitely let Jaxen know about this as well! It feels like it's important information.
Curse-Breaker Kahn also told me a little more about what the career entails, as well as the Special Investigations department that he's involved with.
'Curse-Breaking is... complicated. 'It sounds straight-forward, but if I had to describe it accurately then it is like Potion-Making in reverse. If such a thing were possible. Risk assessment and damage control are essential. We venture where others are afraid to, or ill-equipped to. But understand this: you must first know your limits; magically, always improve -- but morally, never waver. We don't work here, as much as we also use this office to receive jobs. A post office for confidential tasks, of sorts. Investigative agents often work with freelancers, to do the work they are more bound by other limitations or laws to do themselves.'
You bet I wasn't thrilled when he said it was like Potion-Making in reverse... Ugh. Why does everything come back to Potions in some way?! I really need to find a way to improve upon my weaknesses.
I've got a lot to think about and it's dinner time so I better go. My stomach might eat itself if I ignore its cry for sustenance any longer haha!
