Tom noticed how Lindsey smiled and seemed excited that Tom was now Seeker for Team Slytherin. He smiled back at her. There was something about being around Lindsey that made him happy, made him want to smile, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what it was. Whatever it was, it made him glad to be around her. He was glad he'd have more time to spend with her in Quidditch practices and matches.
"Congratulations on completing your kit," he responded to her, genuinely happy for her success. "I might've finished mine today too but I ended up getting distracted on the path from the pitch back towards the castle..." Tom found his thoughts wondering to the little stray cat he'd encountered earlier. He sincerely hoped Hagrid was able to nurse the little guy back to health.
"My herbology kit will definitely be next on my list once I've finished up the potions kit. And the owlry sounds like a good idea... maybe I'll try to sneak up there before curfew and see if I can't collect some feathers."
Waiting for Jade's response and hoping she didn't proceed with too many pointed questions, Anjay turned his attention back to Amelia. He laughed at her comment about Filch and nodded in agreement. "I swear, Filch is the most unique being in all of Hogwarts," he smiled at her. "I swear I've heard him talk to Mrs. Norris more than I've ever heard him talk to another human, student or professor."
He began to reach for another piece of bread before he thought better of it and decided to go for something more filling. Instead he moved on to a hearty salad filled to the brim with lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, and walnuts, dressed with a savory and earthy vinaigrette that reminded of him tarragon and mushrooms. He was a vegetarian so steered clear of any meat products, but never felt like he was missing out on nutrition or taste by his plant based diet.
"Say," he said to Amelia again in an attempt to keep the conversation going, "what do you reckon Mrs. Norris is an animagus who forgot how to turn human again? Maybe she's Filch's wife and stays in her cat form so she doesn't have to talk back when he speaks to her!" He laughed at the absurdity of the thought as he brought a forkful of the salad to his mouth.

As they young first year appeared, Lindsey smiled and made room for her as she sat down, glad to see another friend with her. Even if she was a few years younger, she didn't mind. Unlike a certain Captain of the Slytherin Team. Amara just didn't care much for anyone and to be honest, Lindsey wasn't planning on trying to change her mind. No, she would just be respectful and civil. It was the best she would do, other then helping Amara grow what she needed for potions. Why the girl didn't just get her own kit was beyond her, but more for Lindsey.
"Yeah, wouldn't want to miss it. I mean, unless you wanted to go hungry or something." Lindsey looked back at Tom as he spoke about getting distracted and she was interested in that story, but was pulled back to the whole ingredient hunting when he mentioned going to the Owlry before curfew. "That's a good idea, just be careful on your way."
She didn't want him getting in trouble for being out too late. Maybe she should go with him? Just to make sure he wasn't alone and nothing happened?

He tore his gaze away from his cousin and his friend when J-name answered his question.
Still chewing he regarded his dorm mate with curious eyes. Somehow he thought J-name seemed unhappy. Yet he had said it was going "well".
"Yeah. Quite busy. Been working on our potion's kit, Ryan and I.", Joe responded. His hands trembled as he helped himself to some more chicken thinking about the potion's professor, his need to prove himself and the impending night time adventure.
Some chicken dropped to the floor and he swooped after it, absentmindedly putting it in his pocket.
"What do you think of potions and uhh..." - He probably better not discuss professor Snape right in the Great Hall. "Got a favourite class?", he steered the conversation away from professor Snape.

Ryan gave Jamie a friendly nod, then glanced at Joe while he talked. He wasn't as good with social stuff so mostly kept quiet while he ate, busy thinking about their upcoming trip to the forest and all the ways it could go wrong.
Usually nerve-wrecking situations like that made it harder to have an appetite, but Ryan knew he'd need his strength. Considering it might be his last meal, he switched to chips. It was a shame they probably wouldn't stick around long enough for dessert. That was the best part.
He tuned out the rest of Joe and Jamie's conversation. He didn't know which class was his favourite yet anyway, or if he was included in that conversation. Ryan sighed, finishing up his dinner early. He downed his pumpkin juice and knew he had to get moving soon or he'd worry himself into madness - or worst, changing his mind and therefore looking stupid to his friends.
'We should probably get going,' Ryan said to Joe. 'Got to meet up with Toby to... Potions Kit stuff.' He got up, careful with the hem of his robes. Last thing he wanted was another fall in the Great Hall. That also wouldn't help them being discreet and casual.
He headed to the door, wary of Filch, and stood on his toes trying to get a good view of the Gryffindor table. But the hall was so full now it was hard to spot one first year among them.
'I told him where to meet us,' Ryan said - assuming Joe had followed him, otherwise he was talking to himself. 'Let's hope he doesn't take too long. Come on, let's go wait.' He headed to the Entrance Hall, now starting to regret his dinner and feeling a bit sick at what they were about to do. Why had he decided to do this?
What if he really was putting himself and his friends at risk of dying?

Amara ignored Filch and Mrs Norris as she entered he Great Hall, making her way to the Slytherin table with an air of confidence. She noticed Lindsey and some other younger years nearby, including Tom, but chose to ignore them.
'What's unbelievable?' she asked Meav while passing by. Amara sat across from Lucas, yet just in range to hear Meav's response if she chose to give one. She couldn't tell if her dorm-mate was just that annoyed she'd speak aloud or if she was hoping someone would take the bait and invite her to rant about whatever annoyed her. Amara was starved for entertainment tonight so didn't particularly care which it was.
Besides, if someone she didn't like was involved then it'd give Amara an excuse to brush up on her hexing skills. Not that she ever needed an excuse, but it was much more satisfying to have one.
She offered Lucas a friendly look, then focused on her dinner. Amara grabbed some nuts, as a potion-maker's habit, then an apple as well for later. She wasn't too fussy with her dinner tonight, as she didn't plan to stick around for too long. The common room was a much more preferable place for night's like this, though she looked forward to doing some boasting soon about their Quidditch team being almost full while some teams still barely had anything.
Not that it mattered either way, as Slytherin would crush them with or without full teams.

'I did okay.' Jade shrugged, thinking of her class progress. She'd succeeded, so that's what counted. 'I might have tried harder if it was a more useful spell.'
She sipped her pumpkin juice, eyeing Anjay as he answered her question. Well, not answered it exactly but close enough. 'Oh come on,' Jade said, always persistent. 'You don't at least have a theory or something? I mean, how does a really good Auror just go missing like that? Aren't they trained for this sort of thing?'
Jade at least accepted that if he knew more than he was saying then he probably had a reason for not saying it. She wasn't about to give up on the topic though, as she knew Anjay was not only smart but also more familiar with the Ministry way of life than most of them. She had considerations for a career path at the Ministry herself, but Jade doubted if she could do it or would be happy there. Still, it was a curious subject. She envied his experience a bit.
She rolled her eyes as the topic shifted to Mrs Norris. She couldn't care less about the grumpy caretaker and his hissy cat right now. Jade wanted something more exciting and important. She also wanted to get to know Anjay more, though didn't want to force it either.
So she kept eating, adding a few words to keep up with the conversation, and just waited for another opening to talk to Anjay again.

Joe looked up as Ryan got to his feet, saying they had to go meet up with Toby. He nodded compliantly, yet felt hesitation to leave.
He felt anxious about their trip to the forest yet he had the good mind to mutter an apology to J-Name before leaving him behind: "Sorry pal, gotta dash. Talk later?"
Stuffing the last of his chips into his mouth he jumped to his feet and followed Ryan towards the door, casting a swift glance towards Filch and his cat as he tried to look innocent with his mouth still full and chewing.
He nodded to Ryan's words and then headed out with his friend, making sure not to look towards the Gryffindor table to avoid Filch's suspicion.
Anjay wasn't surprised by Jade's persistence. She was a tenacious individual, after all, and it was an interesting subject. The truth was that Anjay had considered writing home to his parents inquiring about the recent news, but figured he wouldn't hear anything back. That's just the way they were. Anjay's parents were very dedicated to the Ministry and would never go against orders to not divulge information that had been deemed highly confidential. It wasn't worth the wasted parchment paper to try and convince them otherwise.
Of course Anjay himself had been developing his own theories, and he decided those were good enough. He could pass off his own suspicions as things he had learned by having an "in" in the Ministry. The truth was that anyone who read between the lines of the Ministry's reporting would probably come to the same conclusions, and those conclusions were a little scary to consider.
"Of course they're trained for this sort of thing," Anjay said dismissively, ready to jump to the Ministry's defense and defend it against any perceived slight. "The Ministry's Aurors are among the best trained wizards in the whole world." He put his fork down and reached out for his glass of water, taking a large swig as he considered how he wanted to phrase his next statement.
"The truth is," he said lowering his voice so that only Amelia and Jade could hear him, "the Ministry is considering all options... including the fact that he didn't disappear. At least not against his own will." He let the words linger in the air. It was the only logical explanation based on what had been reported in the Prophet, what with their remarks about Blogge being in the company of suspicious individuals.
As soon as the words left Lindsey's mouth Tom began to reconsider his desire to sneak up to the Owlry before curfew. Tom was a rule follower, the type who was never found outside his Common Room past curfew. The rewards for doing so just didn't seem to outweigh the risks of getting caught... especially when Snape was your head of house. That man passed out detentions like muggle households passed out snickers bars on Halloween.
He did notice the glimmer in Lindsey's eye, though, and something about it sparked a feeling inside him. It was a nervous excitement that seemed to bubble up out of nowhere and took him by surprise. What if he did sneak out and risk curfew? Would it be fun? Just thinking about it was an exhilarating feeling, how much more exhilarating would it be to actually go through with it?
A little war began to rage inside him. He knew he shouldn't risk it, but the allure of doing something against the rules pulled at him like a strong current pulls on a raft in a river. He almost felt like he couldn't resist it, even if he knew he was putting himself at risk by doing so.
"Maybe you'd want to come with me, to help me find the feathers?" he said to Lindsey, his voice barely above a whisper. He couldn't believe he was considering it. "Since you already know where they are, I mean, you might be able to help me get in and out fast without anyone noticing we're late." He added that last bit all in one quick breath, still titillated by the thought of being out past curfew.
Rose was happy that she could gain a friend in Lindsey. At first, she was nervous and thought that the older students might dislike and ignore her because she was a 1st year, however, Lindsey had proved to not be like that at all, she was kind and sweet. So, as Rose sat down she happily let Lindsey and the Slytherin boy talk about their kits, silently waiting for the day when she was older too.
After her long day, August felt very tired as she dragged herself to dinner with her favorite satchel bag. She would have liked to join the other Hufflepuffs in their conversation, but she felt she'd be more sociable in the morning. She grabbed a variety of foods as she ate in silence. Sometimes, she still couldn't believe she was a witch and she attended a magical school. It felt surreal to her that she had all these food options and could eat to her stomach's content. Still, she felt guilty that she had this amazing opportunity while her previous foster siblings didn't. It wasn't fair. She felt deeply bothered by her thoughts as she wiped a stray tear from her eyes.
Pulling different types of papers from her bag, she began to outline the story ideas she had been jotting down all day. This next story had to better than her other ones, because she had decided to show a finished work to her friends.

As they sat there, Lindsey began to think about what all she needed for the next day. Letting out a sigh as she ate some more of her food and mentally prepared for a night of getting a few things in order. The day off she had was nice, but she had been so busy, she had forgotten to do anything in preparation for the next day.
At his question, she looked up and then smiled brightly before she gave a nod. "Aye, if ye dinna mind, I will join ye." She said as she thought about when the best time would be to go. Lindsey hated to miss dessert, but for one night, she could manage missing it. They would need to head out soon, before it got too late.
It seemed that none of her housemates were willing to talk to her this evening, so Rubes sat quietly and enjoyed her dinner, trying to think of some way she could entertain herself. Grabbing some carrot sticks, she started throwing them in the air and trying to catch them in her mouth, with not much success.

As Jonathan mentioned something about Potion Kits, Jamie fidgeted a little. He hadn't even started on his and it was October. Well, he did need it, he was sure of that... Letting out a sigh, he rubbed the back of his neck and glanced towards the staff table, thinking about having to deal with Professor Snape. It really wasn't something he was ready to do yet.
At the question about his favorite class, Jamie shrugged. "I guess I haven't gotten one... Nothing has really perked my favorite yet." It was true, though he was good at certain classes, none had really become his favorite yet.
Suddenly, the two were talking about heading out and Jamie watched as they disappeared towards the door. Alone again... Well, he could probably just head to his house and look at some magazines his father had sent him.
