An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
The sun set rather quickly that afternoon - hinting that a colder season wasn't too far away. The end of October neared, as tomorrow would be Hallowe'en.
The Great Hall began to fill with students and staff, though Hagrid was notably absent. Filch roamed near the doors, looking rather sour about something (more than usual). Mrs Norris hissed at anyone who wandered by, from her secured perch around Filch's shoulders. None of the staff paid them much notice, but several older students knew to keep their distance.
Professor Snape conversed with Professors Hathmore and Archerose, though didn't allow it to distract him from his dinner. Snape had a detention to attend to once dinner concluded.
Amelia entered the hall shortly after dealing with Lucas Mardling and quickly found her way to the Gryffindor table, taking a glance over at Filch and his feline companion. It wasn't completely unlike him to look so sour, but it did rather concern her that he lurked around the entrance to the Great Hall. As she sat, she rubbed the back of her neck quietly before grabbing some of the food from the table.
Grabbing an apple from a pile of fruit, she tucked it into her bag for a snack that she might need later and grabbed some chicken from a platter for her plate. It was nice to sit down after all her exploring and walking today. As she looked around, she waited for any of her friends to join her, hoping she might see some of her teammates, as well as maybe Tiana.

Dinner time was perfect and after she had gone by her dorm, she smiled as she made her way past Filch and his hissy little cat. That thing always made her skin crawl and she finally made her way to the Slytherin table. She was glad that she had gotten her potions kit today. Grabbing some nuts from the table, she slipped them into her pocket so she could snack on them later or maybe use them in something.
Looking around for Avery, she grabbed a plate and filled it with some of her favorites before she tucked in and ate something. It was always good to fill her stomach before dinner and she sat there, happy to sit after trekking around the grounds looking for different things.
Jamie had tucked himself away for the afternoon, looking through some stuff from home concerning the life outside of the magical world that he wanted and enjoyed. How many races had he missed due to going to school here? It made him cringe to think he could go out and enjoy his time with his dad.
What was he doing right now? Probably getting ready to read dinner with his mom.
Letting out a sigh, he found his way into the great hall and went over to the Ravenclaw table, stealing a glance at the Gryffindor table to see if his sister had arrived. It wasn't like they spent much time together any more, he was with his house and she her own. She also loved this life and had made her house Quidditch team. He'd attend for her, but that was about it...
Letting out a sigh, he sat down and began to spoon some food on his plate, grabbed a apple for a late night snack and quietly ate by himself.

Tom trekked through the Entrance Hall and made his way into the Great Hall, exhausted from the days events. He'd had a grueling Potions lesson, a successful but tiring Quidditch try-out, and saved an abandoned cat from a cruel fate on the Forest Path. As far as days went, he was happy this one was coming to a close. He just wanted to sleep and relax!
The hissing Mrs. Norris as he walked past Filch almost made him lose it, but he kept his cool. No need in arguing with the old loon and risking a detention. Instead he slipped into the Hall, made his way to the Slytherin table, and noticed Lindsey there. He plopped down next to his new friend with an exacerbated sigh as he began to fill up his plate.
"Evening, Lindsey," he said to her, hoping his voice didn't betray how exhausted he was.
His pumpkins purchased from Lucas, Anjay strode into the Great Hall. He enjoyed dinner time- the winding down of the responsibilities, the laughs between friends as they recounted their days, the delicious foods always served to them by the House Elves. He noticed he was one of the first Gryffindor to take a seat at his table- not surprising, as he had just been standing in the Entrance Hall right before dinner began.
He noticed Amelia sitting down and plopped himself down beside her. She came from a good pureblood family, not wealthy or influential, per se, but definitely pureblood. He considered her a good person to have in his list of friends and contacts.
"What did you think of today's Charm lesson?" he asked her as he began to help himself to a piece of roasted chicken.

Grace has rather struggled getting her pumpkins to where they had to be, and now she was extra hungry. She tucked an apple in her pocket, either for herself or for Marcia, she hadn’t decided yet. Then, she opened up her parchment and continued thinking about how to write the letter to the person who might have had the seeds. Grace realized she would probably have to learn how to garden. Well, Herbology was easy enough, especially with Rose’s help. She wondered where Rose was, even if they sat at different tables.
She listened to the chatter at her table, focusing a little on Anjay and Amelia. Hey, they both had A names. Neat, Grace thought as she sucked on the end of her quill. It felt weird writing a letter to someone she didn’t even know, but she hoped it was alright for her to even write the letter. Was that allowed? Owls were a bit strange to Grace, even though her mother had always used them.

Arthur was dreading his detention and wondering how on earth he would get on Snape’s good side. He sat a bit to the side at his table, and he stuffed his face a little with the food of his choice. Thank goodness for the House Elves. He would have to look into thanking them later. Maybe Hufflepuff as a house could do something for them. That would be nice. He also considered that he could help Professor Sprout out a little more tomorrow.
He looked at Professor Snape, talking with Archerose and Hathmore. Arthur hopes that he could make up his mistakes in detention, but he was still a little annoyed that he had to have it. Sure, he could be a little excitable at times. Who wouldn’t want to learn how to make cool Potions do cool things? He pushed his food around his plate as he thought.

Elizabeth enjoyed dinner. She knew her table manners, even if many of her fellow students. She sat down, her posture as good as it was at home. Elizabeth looked around at the other Slytherins, wondered how they had spent their afternoons. She reached for a large serving dish of salad and scooped some into her plate, eating delicious bites. She was fond of the tomatoes at Hogwarts, they usually seemed different to her for some reason.
She kept her eyes down, looking at her salad. Every so often she heard Mrs. Norris hissing at a student. She was thankful that she had stayed far away from the cat. She didn’t like it, not at all. She knew cats could be good, but it was hard to imagine Mrs. Norris as a good kitten. She wondered how a cat earned the title of Mrs.
Elara entered the hall after a rather productive afternoon, a large history book clutched to her chest. She had managed to snag it from the library before dinner after speaking with Professor Archerose and she hoped to find the information she needed to complete his task within. It seemed she always had a book with her these days, some might joke that she spent most of her time within the library, but she'd be the one laughing when she got top marks in her OWLs and they were still pondering where they could've possibly missed out on the marks to bump their grade up from an acceptable to an exceeds expectations.
Making a beeline for the Hufflepuff table, Elara glanced towards the Slytherin table more out of habit than any desire to seek Hanna out- but the Slytherin had apparently not arrived to dinner yet. She hurriedly took a seat besides Arthur, finding it easy to single her friend out among the crowd now. Placing the large book on the table, a jug of orange juice shuddered and a little of the contents sloshed out onto the table from the weight of the text.
"Today could've gone better, but at least its almost over" she said, thinking aloud as she began piling her preferred food onto her plate, not yet looking directly at the boy. Pouring herself a glass from the jug of orange juice she'd almost toppled, she took a sip before finally glancing at Arthur. "Are you okay? I'm sure detention won't be so bad" she wouldn't be caught dead in detention- she didn't need that going on her record, but of course she would attempt to offer her housemate whatever comfort she could. "Eat your dinner, it'll make you feel better" she prompted, smiling in what she hoped was a reassuring manner. She felt confident that Arthur would feel better in the morning, especially since it would be Halloween and thus, they'd have the feast to look forward to... But right now he looked frightfully sad and she didn't enjoy seeing any of her friends looking so upset.

Walking briskly into the hall, Toby's stomach growled in protest at how long it was taking him to start taking advantage of the array of food that was waiting for him at the Gryffindor table. He looked first towards the Ravenclaw table, knowing that he'd likely draw unwanted attention if he went to find Joe and Ryan at that moment. He was fairly sure that the decision to visit the forest that evening had been confirmed and he was impatient to iron out the details.
Instead veering towards the Gryffindor table, he took a seat opposite Grace as she was the only one present at the moment that he was familiar with and he didn't fancy sittin with Amelia and the other fifth years- that would just be weird and he was sure she wouldn't appreciate his company. They hadn't been getting along too well recently and he didn't want to fight with his sister if he could avoid it.
"Hey Grace!" he greeted the girl enthusiastically as he began helping himself to the food around him, piling a generous amount of food onto his plate. "What're you doing?" it looked like she was writing, but he doubted it was homework... No one was dull enough to do their homework during mealtimes, were they?

Out of habit, Jaxen looked around the hall as he arrived and walked towards the Ravenclaw table, it seemed that he wasn't early as there were already plenty of other students already seated at the tables. He spotted Elizabeth at the Slytherin table, she seemed to have recovered from the anxiety of their charms class that afternoon, but he wasn't too interested in checking in- he got the impression that she hadn't cared much for his company.
Heading straight for the Ravenclaw table, he quickly took a seat and proceeded to fill his plate with food. Apparently none of his friends had arrived yet, he was the first and so he had a few moments to eat in silence before someone with the ability to distract him from that task arrived. He couldn't help but notice that Filch seemed to be in a worse mood than usual and he wondered what the cause of that was- although from his experience, Filch didn't need an excuse to be foul to the students.

Jade wandered into the Great Hall and flinched when she heard Mrs Norris hiss at her. She pulled a face of dislike, then hurried to the Gryffindor table.
'Did someone step on that bloody cat's tail again, or what?' Jade asked, sitting beside Anjay. Jade glared at Filch for good measure, then tried to work out what she felt like having for dinner. She settled on some baked potatoes and grilled chicken.
She enjoyed mealtimes - not just for the food, but it was much easier to talk to someone in particular or a group of friends without having to try and track everyone down. She missed Tiana, but assumed she was just busy with Quidditch stuff or something. It wasn't as if Jade was Tiana's only friend, after all. She'd been getting to know Amy a bit more lately too, so that was good but Jade took a while to really warm up to new friends.
Jacob wasn't there yet, but she'd spent enough time around him in the past to consider they know each other well enough by now. He annoyed her sometimes anyway. Some others she knew enough of as well but felt rather neutral about. It seemed like Anjay was next. She knew he came from a rather famous family and perhaps that put her off a bit, but he didn't seem too pompous about it so she'd give it a fair effort.
'Do anything interesting today?' Jade asked, glancing at Amy to not exclude her entirely - though her focus was mostly on Anjay. 'Oh hey, has your family told you anything about that missing Auror? You know, the kind of stuff that wasn't in the papers?'
She wondered how he felt about an Auror going missing, since she vaguely remembered one or both of his parents were Aurors too. Jade at least had enough sense this time to not blurt out the question though. It probably wasn't something Anjay wanted to worry about. But then again, maybe he was used to it? Yeah, she really needed to find out more about him. Jade liked getting to know her classmates and was sorely lacking that with the Gryffindor lot.
Avery stared at the floor as she made her way to dinner, keeping her hands stuffed firmly in her pants pockets to avoid lashing out when people bumped into her in their rush. She clenched teeth and just tried to ignore it, then yelped when Mrs Norris suddenly hissed at her.
'Sod off, you stupid cat.' Avery grumbled, then made a beeline for the Slytherin table before Filch could figure out who'd said it. For once being pushed around in a crowd of eager students was useful.
She sat across from Tom-whats-his-name, and gave Lindsey a hesitant look that she hoped resembled a smile or something at least remotely friendly. Avery sighed, glad that it was finally time to eat. The day would be over soon and she looked forward to just snuggling into her warm bed.
After piling chips and broccoli onto her plate, which she then smothered with sauce, Avery glanced warily at the other two across from her. She didn't know Tom, just his name for whatever reason, but she also didn't know what to say to Lindsey. Avery wasn't really in the mood to talk either. And what if Lindsey had gotten sick of her by now? They had spent a bit of time together today. More than Avery was used to spending with anyone in a way that didn't result in fighting.
She resolved not to say anything, and just speared her dinner with a fork.

Ryan arrived to dinner utterly exhausted. He'd gotten the pumpkins where they needed to go, but didn't dare try to salvage his robes for now. He put them in the laundry basket he shared with his dormmates, and basically prayed for a miracle. Magic could fix it, right?
Then he had to rush back to the Great Hall, muttering about the stupid tower stairs he would never forgive Hogwarts for making him venture every day. He'd lost track of Joe though, but assumed he'd seem him at dinner.
Avoiding Filch and that terrifying cat, Ryan braced himself then headed over to the Gryffindor table. He found Toby and reached to poke him in the back to get his attention.
'Er - hi. Um..' He fidgeted, anxious with the attention he was drawing to himself. 'I er, just wanted you to know we'll meet you in the Entrance Hall after dinner. You know, so we can talk about our Potions Kits?' Ryan considered lying about a study session or something, but there were too many older students nearby and he wasn't confident he could do it without sounding nervous.
He just hoped Toby got the unspoken message, and knew it was about their planned trip into the forest after. It technically was about their kit, but Ryan couldn't risk being any more direct than he had. They still hadn't ironed out the exact plans yet, so meeting up in the Entrance Hall would be a way to fix that.
Unsure what else to say or how to leave, Ryan just turned and hurried to his own house table. He sat across from Jamie, giving the boy a shy smile of greeting. Jamie was one of the boys he shared a dormitory with, but Ryan didn't know him very well yet. He didn't even know his surname, but figured they'd learn that sort of stuff over time anyway. Hogwarts was still kind of new.
Now he just had to decide what to eat. It was his favourite part of the day. Ryan grabbed an apple and some nuts to save for later, while trying to decide if he felt like chicken or lamb tonight.
