Elizabeth knew how the sorting would work. It had been explained to her by parents and debated by the people sitting with her on the train as soon as they knew she was also a first year. There were four houses, yes, and the hat would put you in the one you were best suited to. And they would be your friends. Elizabeth stepped up, then realized that the older woman calling out names hadn’t called her first. Blush rose to her cheeks.
She stood waiting with the other first years. Looking around, some seemed as nervous as she was. That meant she wasn’t the only one. Elizabeth wasn’t sure what other children were really like. Did they all have tutors as well? She doubted it. Mother and Father had once, when she was very young, explained how lucky she was to live in a home with people who cared about her future. She felt sorry for the other children. The tutors helped make Elizabeth more perfect.
Soon enough, her own name was called up, ”Doren, Elizabeth.” Holding her head up high as she made her way, correctly, to the sorting hat seat, Elizabeth waited for the Professor to place the hat on her head, and for the hat to prove her mind. She couldn’t help imagining little tendrils poking into her brain, when she knew that wasn’t what would happen. Hoped, at the very least. She closed her eyes, not wanting to look over the faces of the Great Hall.
The moment was brief. Professor McGonagall lowered the hat onto Elizabeth's head, and no sooner had it touched her hair was it declaring the result to the entire hall and its students.
The hat was removed as soon as it'd been placed. Students at the Slytherin table had a notably more dignified and respectful applause for their newest member, unlike the other houses and their roaring cheers or clapping.
Some shifted to make room for her, and a prefect beckoned Elizabeth to join them at what was now her table as well. That was where she would spend the next seven years of her schooling - eating and, hopefully, conversing at that table. And now she was officially one of them - the first Doren to ever attend Hogwarts.

Elizabeth smiles softly. Slytherin seemed like a good house. Ambition was a good trait to have, after all. Ravenclaw was the other house Elizabeth had considered, but with how quick she was sorted, it seemed like Slytherin was her perfect fit. She liked the way they reacted, as well. It wasn’t loud as she thought it would be.
She looked at the prefect, imagining a day, hopefully soon, when she would have that honor. She just had to do well enough in her school work. She looked at the rest of the first years, knowing that they would be sorted soon and then she would know who was most like her. That was what houses were all about, after all.
