Grace was glad for Hagrid’s advice. Now that they had a better idea of who to ask, she could make her way down to the staff room. It wasn’t the first time they had ventured down there, and Grace suspected it wouldn’t be the last, either. She only had a general idea of what Professor Fairburn was like, and Grace hoped the professor wouldn’t be bothered by two students that weren’t even in the class asking about a creature that was apparently several years old.
Grace knocked on the door of the staff room. She wondered what the teachers thought of her and of Gerald, especially since they had been asking odd questions. Hopefully they just thought they were curious first years trying to figure out the castle. Grace was glad she had Gerald along with her, but she wished she had Ryan and Toby, too. She considered the four of them their own little group, and the people she would probably have been most comfortable around at Hogwarts, other than maybe her own siblings. Anyways, she waited for a member of staff, hopefully Professor Fairburn, to come out of the room.
While Gerald was a bit surprised at Hagrid not knowing about the Scarebear, he didn't mind having to go to the Staff room again. If this kept happening, though, the staff would probably get suspicious of what the two of them are doing, asking about magic creatures that existed years ago. Did Muggle Teachers have students asking about Dinosaurs? Probably, but they'd have to be weird.
Shrugging off his thoughts, he waited next to Grace for Miss Fairburn, wondering what the others were doing. Toby was probably talking Ryan into doing something. He decided. Hopefully it's not too bad?
"Hey Grace, Do you know Toby?" He asked her randomly, wondering just what kind of person he was. He managed to get Ryan out of his shell to play a prank on them, so he must be cool.

”Huh?” Grace said, momentarily drawn out of her thoughts. She grinned. ”Of course. He’s in my house, after all.” Grace wasn’t best friends with him, but she did know him. She knew enough about him to know that he was a bit concerned about his sister’s friend being mean, and that he was a bit hot headed. He was also her Quidditch teammate. Grace worried her mom would be disappointed in her because she didn’t think she was good enough, but Toby was a good Seeker, Grace thought.
”Why do you ask?” she said to Gerald. She had thought they were friends, and that Gerald probably knew Toby better than Grace did. They were both boys after all, something Grace obviously wasn’t. She always thought that boys just became friends by deciding it, but she wasn’t really sure how to interact with boys. She did have a brother, but they weren’t as close as she and her sister were. She hoped she was acting okay around the boys, that they didn’t think she was weird. A lot of people back home thought she was odd.

It was Professor Rivera who answered. She first glanced at Gerald, then Grace. 'Yes?' she asked, unsure which of them had knocked. 'How may we assist you this time?'
There was a burst of magic behind her - almost like a tiny fireworks display of orange and gold. Professor Rivera didn't even react to it, except to roll her eyes. There was some barely-audible lecturing in the background on behalf of Professors McGonagall and Hathmore.

The conversation they were having was interrupted, so Grace had managed to knock properly. Nice. It was Gerald’s Head of House that answered, but Grace could’ve sworn that she heard her own Head of House, Professor McGonagall, inside the room.. Grace blinked, then said, ”We’re looking for Professor Fairburn.” She tried to crane her head to see what was going on inside the room. Fireworks? Was something wrong? She hadn’t seen many people do fireworks before, but then again, she hadn’t seen many people outright doing magic before coming to Hogwarts.
”What’s um....what’s going on in there?” Grace asked, tilting her head as she spoke. Was it an argument? Adults didn’t argue, especially professors. They were supposed to be smart. Maybe it was a debate. Grace liked that word. It was like an argument but with rules and it had to make sense. No ‘because I said so.’ Grace hated that phrase.
About to make up some excuse, Gerald was thankful the Professor came when she did. Breathing a small sigh of relief, he blinked in surprise at the Explosions behind them. Just what happened in there? It couldn't have been anything good, else McGonagall wouldn't have reacted. Hathmore seems like the type to lecture if something had affected him personally, so was it a Glitter-Bomb? Who set it off?
More than happy to let Grace do the talking, Gerald tried to angle his head, aiming to look further into the room.
Professor Rivera shook her head, wordlessly implying Grace's question was not one to be asked or answered. Hearing who they'd requested to speak to though was good news to her, and she quickly ducked into the staffroom to call for Professor Fairburn.
'Good. Take her,' Rivera muttered before returning to the staff room itself. She hadn't meant them to hear that, but that was a hint at who might be causing some ruckus out of sight.
There was some fast movement, then Fairburn appeared in view - laughing and her with her wand in hand. She quickly composed herself and tucked her wand away, then gave the first years a friendly smile. 'Hello there,' she said. 'What can I for you?'
Elara walked briskly down the hallway in the direction of the staffroom, after returning to the potions classroom to retrieve her textbook and then having to run it all the way back to the common room to relieve herself from carrying it around all day- she was running a bit behind. She doubted that she'd even have time to visit the library before dinner, not when she had other (some might argue more important) things to do.
Approaching the staffroom, she immediately noticed that there were two first years conversing with Professor Fairburn in the doorway- she didn't want to be rude and interrupt but she also wasn't interested in standing around to wait for them to finish talking- that could take time that she didn't have. Clearing her throat to alert them of her arrival, she took a step towards the small group.
"I'm sorry to interrupt" she started, hoping that they wouldn't mind her butting in briefly "Excuse me Professor, but is Professor Archerose around?" she ignored the first years completely as she turned her attention to Fairburn in a hope of having her question answered- and hoping that she wouldn't have to go track the teacher down.
Professor Fairburn had barely spoken to the 1st years when another student joined them. It gave the younger pair a chance to consider their answer, and she happily turned her attention to... Miss King? Yes, that was her name.
'He certainly is.' She nodded, peering through a gap in the staff room door. 'Could - no, relax I'll test it out another time. Could you come out here though, Ervine? A lovely Hufflepuff student would like to speak with you.' Fairburn gave Elara an amused look, as if they shared a secret. Hey, if she could subtly put in a good word for one of her studious students, then why not?
Fairburn moved aside to give them space, then returned her focus to the first years and awaited their explanation for why they'd asked for her.
Professor Archerose cautiously glanced around the door, then stepped into the corridor. He gave Fairburn an unimpressed look, and adjusted his glasses. He wore what appeared to be a faded Hufflepuff scarf, which he also adjusted in a show of discomfort.
'Let's move this over here, so we don't interrupt them,' he told Elara, indicating to a little further along the corridor. Just enough distance so the two conversations wouldn't overlap or be overheard. 'Well then -good afternoon, Miss King. How may I be of assistance?' Archerose asked, friendly and curious as to why he, of all Professors, was requested.

Grace opened her mouth to speak but was just as quickly interrupted by a Hufflepuff girl. She waited for Professor Archerose, one of the professors she was a little more familiar with, to come out of the staff room and go talk to her. Then she and Gerald could describe the scaly beastie. She did wonder what Professor Fairburn was up to that seemed to have all the other teachers upset.
”Um, we were wondering what you knew about....” Grace considered how Gerald had described it and how Hagrid had described it. ”Centuries-old creatures that look like scaly bears?” she added in her head “that may or may not be lurking in a hall of mirrors guarding a cool secret door.” She couldn’t quite remember it exactly because well, she had been quite busy running away from it. Maybe Gerald had a better idea of describing it. She wished she had a photographic memory.
Content to stand in the Background, he glanced at the Hufflepuff that also needed a Professor. The Professors must not get much time off. Looking back to Fairburn, he nodded as Grace's description sounded correct. "Well, It looks like a Bear but has scales, Horns and I think five eyes?"
Gerald wasn't sure what else to add. Saying too much might give them detention, and while it might be a good way to explore that room, he didn't want to lose points for his house.
Professor Fairburn was baffled yet intrigued by their request. She made a "hmm" sound as she considered the details, trying to think what creature it could possibly be. She decided not to ask them why they wanted to know or where they even heard such details.
'There's nothing like that,' she said. 'Not that I've heard of, anyway. Not unless you mean tusks rather than horns, and three eyes not five? In which case, that certainly sounds like a Gerodenus.'
He nodded, confident that's what they were asking about. Nothing else fit, and Fairburn had an exceptionally extensive knowledge of beasts - even the rarest or most ancient ones.
'A Gerodenus can live for thousands of years, though haven't been seen for centuries,' she explained, happy to impart some rare knowledge on the first years. It was something different, as her classes were all 3rd years and above. 'It was rumoured that Godric Gryffindor captured one, which was tamed by feeding it an ancient fruit grown by Helga Hufflepuff. She kept a supply of the ancient seeds, but after the founders left the school there was no sign of beast nor fruit.'

Grace nodded at Gerald’s additional descriptions. That seemed right. She was glad to know the name of the creature, at the very least. Gerodenus. Gerodenus! She was a little less scared now that she knew this wasn’t some Frankenstein-style monster that was only cobbled together for this ball of mirrors puzzle. She smiled at Professor Fairburn as she went into more detail about the creature. Especially the part about how Hufflepuff had tamed the creature. All they needed was some kinda fruit! It was at this point Grace kinda wished that there was a Hufflepuff on their little team.
”Do you know what the rumors say about...where they kept the seeds, by any chance? Or what kind of fruit they most resembled?” Grace considered it, thinking maybe they could trick the Gerodenus into thinking a peach was a delicious Hufflepuff fruit. Or they could find the old seeds. That would be cool. She hoped they got a chance to do a little exploring before dinner, maybe discover some cool rhyme or other that would set them on the right direction.
Gerodenus didn't sound as Cool as Scarebear, but it'll do. He was surprised he got so many things wrong with the description, as he was almost certain it had horns.
Where did Helga Hufflepuff grow the fruit?" Hopefully they didn't need to sneak into the Common Room again. Was it possible they could get the help of a Hufflepuff? Hopefully it was outside, then perhaps they could find an old greenhouse with the Seeds.
Elara smiled when Fairburn confirmed that Professor Archerose was in the staffroom and turned to call for him to come outside. She called her lovely. The compliment although not spoken directly to her left her wishing that she could speak with the Care of Magical Creatures teacher instead-but alas... She hadn't come to engage in idle chit chat and for this particular task, she needed Archerose- nobody else would provide a good substitute. "Sorry to disturb you sir" she apologised as Archerose emerged from the staffroom and led her a little way away from where Fairburn was still talking with the first years. "But, I heard from some other studnts that you were issuing challenges for students to do to get people more interested in history?" she didn't waste time in getting to the point, she was sure he'd appreciate that anyway "I am already quite interested in history already and was wondering if that was something that you're still doing?"
It was quite possible that Archerose would prefer to just go back to doing whatever it was he'd been busy with in the staffroom, if so- she wouldn't waste anymore of his time.
