An active, character-driven Hogwarts experience set in the early 2000s. Unique items, plots, and features. Non-canon; this isn't Harry Potter's story, it's ours.
Hanna's feet dragged along the corridor as she made her way towards the Duellist Chamber, it had been a long day and she really just wanted to relax but she had told Hathmore she'd be here and she needed the extra help.
Pushing the door open slightly and peered into the room "Sir?", her voice echoed through the room and was greeted by silence. With a sigh she stepped into the room and headed to the side of the room to place down her bag and robe. A moment passed before she moved towards the parchment on the wall and wrote her name, she didn't completely what why it was here or what it was for but she knew that she needed to write down her name for her extra lesson.
A few minuets passed as she waited for the Professor, she rolled her shoulders and stretched her arms in anticipations; she didn't know what the training session would entail but she did know it was gonna push her a little.
It didn't take long for Professor Hathmore to arrive.
'You were rather hasty to conclude our conversation this morning,' he said as approached. His tone was casual though, confirming she wasn't in trouble and he merely had more to say on the topic. 'Had you stayed a moment longer, I'd have had the chance to assure you that your actions were not as stupid as you perceived. In fact, you reacted appropriately enough to your situation based on the knowledge you had.' He led her towards a section deeper in the chamber that was reserved for these bonus lessons.
'But for now, let us focus on this. Improving your skills in Defence has a variety of benefits,' Hathmore said. 'Today, we'll start with the basics of duelling. Wand combat is a crucial skill all witches and wizards should be familiar with. Choose one of these dummies to duel, and cast a spell against it.'
Hathmore explained each dummy so Hanna knew what her options were.
--
Choose a dummy:
White: learn how to duel. You will be given a tutorial while duelling.
Silver: you're familiar with HAU duelling and don't need a tutorial. This is a regular training dummy.
Black: duelling skill is level 5 or higher. It's more challenging, but doubles exp rewards.
Note:any rewards gained from this quest stage is in addition to the usual duelling rewards.
"Sorry sir, I didn't want to waste anymore of your time" She followed behind her Professor as he spoke, a small smile pulling at her lips as some of the tension left her body; he didn't think it was stupid to react in the way she did, that was a good sign right?
Hanna came to a stop next to her Professor, her eyes moved over the dummies as she listened to Hathmore describe each one "I think I'm gonna go with the Silver", her eyes moved from the dummy to Hathmore as she confirmed her choice before moving to stand in front of the dummy.
With a firm grip on her wand and her feet spaced a shoulder width apart the young Slytherin took a deep breath in before attacking the dummy; she flicked her wand and spoke the incantation.
'I rarely allow one to waste my time, Miss Grey,' Hathmore said. 'In any case, it is my duty to educate and prepare students. You won't be ignored in favor of convenience, I assure you. If I wanted a quiet and convenient life, I wouldn't have agreed to be a Professor.' The last part was intended to lighten the mood, however true it may be.
Hanna DP:5 4 Dummy DP: 5
Hanna cast an offensive spell (score: 2), but dummy's defensive spell (score: 3) overpowers it. Dummy wins the round.
'That was a close call; not a bad start,' Hathmore said, observing her progress. 'Try being more forceful with your incantations, but don't grip your wand too tightly.'
He waited for her to continue, and was more at ease than he'd been during class. It seemed impossible, since he was always calm and professional during classes, yet Hanna got the impression that wand combat was second nature to him.
Hanna took a sharp inhale as the dummy overpowered her, the spell forcing her to take a step back to stop her from falling over.
"Okay" She took a deep breath in and got back into position, loosening her grip on her wand as she did so; she needed to remember that, she didn't need to grip her wand so tightly to cast a spell. Hanna relaxed her shoulders and flicked her wand, taking a more forceful tone as she attacked the dummy once more.
Hanna cast an offensive spell (score: 2), which overpowers Dummy's defensive spell (score: 1). Hanna wins the round.
'There you go,' Hathmore nodded. His expression remained focused and neutral. 'Keep it up.' Hanna's spells weren't as powerful as they could be, and he wondered why. Then again, she was there to help regain her confidence so perhaps it was holding her back in more ways than one.
Hanna DP:5 4 1 Dummy DP:5 4
Dummy cast an offensive spell (score: 5), which overpowers Hanna's defensive spell (score: 2). Dummy wins the round.
A proud smile forced its way on to Hannas face, a flicker of confidence glowed in her eyes as she looked up at Hathmore; a nod came from her as she listened to her professor before moving back into position, this time she prepared herself to defend herself. Taking a deep breath and fixing her stance before she spoke a defensive spell as clear as possible.
A groan was pulled from the Slytherin after the dummy won another round, irritation was becoming clear on her face as she tucked her hair behind her face before taking pointed steps back into position.
Hanna paused as she raised her wand to attack, a sigh falling from her as she lowered her arms to her side and took in a few deep breaths; she needed to be calm and collected or the spell might backfire. Closing her eyes she took a deep breath in and rolled her shoulders before fixing her stance and raising her wand once again; her wand balanced perfectly in her hand as she attacked the dummy once again, her voice firm and movements controlled.
Hanna cast an offensive spell (score: 5), but Dummy's defensive spell (score: 6) overpowers it. Dummy wins the round and match.
Despite Hanna's loss against the dummy, Professor Hathmore was pleased with her progress. That last spell was much stronger and showed more of Hanna's true potential. He doubted she'd simply gotten lucky, as the dummy had only just managed to overpower it.
'Well done,' he said. 'There's much to learn from this. Just as there was much to learn from what happened to you with the Daymoth. It's important to remember that you are not weak, Miss Grey. More often than not, we learn more from losing than we do from winning. This is a step in the right direction. So yes, you did well.'
Professor Hathmore observed the dummy then nodded, turning to face Hanna. 'You've completed this task. That last cast was much better, and I've no doubt you'll keep improving,' he said. 'If you'd like to continue testing and increasing your skills against dark forces, I have another task for you. Are you interested?'
"Oh come on!" Frustration filled her as the dummies defence overpowered her spell; it was a dummy for Merlin's sake! she couldn't even defeat one dummy?!
Her professors words drew her from her thoughts and her body relaxed as she listened to him speak; he was right and she needed to hear that, there was no way you can learn without failure and if she just kept practising then she'd get better.
"You're right, failure can be a good teacher" she smiled as she spoke, a spark of confidence in her eyes as she rolled up her sleeves before continuing "What's next?"
'There's an empty classroom not far from here,' said Professor Hathmore. 'Inside is a small cupboard - you'd easily spot it as soon as you enter. It's the one with a silver padlock.'
He offered Hanna a silver key. 'Unlock the cupboard with this. When you do, a cursed object will escape.' Hathmore said. He was rather casual about it, considering there was nothing casual about the dangers of cursed objects. 'Your task is to, by any means necessary, get the object back into the cupboard and re-lock it. Afterwards, return my key.'
It was the last part he was most stern and cautionary about. 'You may come find me in the staff room. If I'm not there - I'll be here. Good luck. Don't lose the key.' He nodded, then left the chamber. He implied earlier that they'd have further conversation, but it seemed that wasn't right now.
However, before Hanna had the chance to do anything - an owl flew through a small, open window and landed on a nearby bench. It looked a bit ruffled, though held out its leg to her to reveal a note. When she unrolled the parchment, the following letter was written there:
I am holding a private tryout session for some of your classmates who weren't able to make it to the first one.
I understand that you're probably busy and have other things to do, but I require a Keeper's participation. It would be worth your time and beneficial to our team if you were to come to the pitch at first opportunity. I've no intention of wasting my own time either, so I promise we'll get this done as quickly as possible. If that's not motivation enough, remember that the experience will be good for your training also.
If you truly want to prove yourself to others - this will help you in that goal.
Dread covered Hanna’s face as she listened to every word her professor spoke, he couldn’t be serious about this right?; but as she continued to listen she began to realise how serious he was.
”Sir?” Her question was cut short as he handed her the key, her hands gripping on to it as she tried to object to the idea “But Sir are you sure?”. A sigh fell from her lips as she watched Hathmore leave, so many questions unanswered and a slight fear brewing inside her.
Hanna moved towards her bag and slipped the key in to one of the pockets, there was no backing out and if she knew her teacher just a little bit then she knew for a fact she’d be in big trouble if she lost the key. It only took a moment for Hanna to grab her things and prepare to leave but the flapping of wings stopped her in her tracks; a groan fell from the Slytherin as she read over the note, stroking the feathers of the owl who had delivered it to her.
“This is definitely not a request, if I don’t go Amara will definitely not like it” she spoke aloud to the bird before shaking her head and moving to leave “Hathmore won’t mind waiting... right?.... Either way I should get to practice”; her hand instinctively touched the key as she left the room.
