Ryan was still embarrassed. He stared at his plate for a moment, half-listening and trying to stay calm. He muttered something to Toby, then realised the Gryffindor wouldn't have heard him. 'I mean, I don't have any other Ravenclaw friends. Just Gerald. He was...' He blushed again, not wanting to admit Gerald was his first friend.
Most people had lots of friends that came and went while growing up, right? Ryan wondered what that was like.
'I wouldn't have changed my mind,' Ryan added. 'We're friends now, Toby. You don't just give up on friends. Or, I mean, I don't...' He wasn't sure where that nickname came from. Had Toby said it and it caught on, or had Ryan just accidentally slipped up? Oh no, what if Tobias hated it? He groaned, annoyed at himself and his own uncertainties.
He was so scared of messing things up that some of that probably showed in his expression now. Ryan tugged at his hood in attempt to hide. Why hadn't he used this hood before? It was like something a grim reaper would have and was brilliant. He should use it all the time. But then again, it made it harder to know when someone was sneaking up on him. Like Grace.
'Gerroff,' Ryan grumbled, avoiding Grace as she casually went to lean on him and Toby. He didn't like to be touched as it made him nervous. And she was a girl, so it was extra weird. He didn't know why, but it just was.
He just shrugged at the questions about Gerald. He was popular today - but they'd just have to see what Gerald decided. It wasn't as if he was missing. Ryan huffed, not necessarily jealous but a bit annoyed that people kept joining them. He just wanted to have lunch with his new friend and not be so nervous all the time.
'We have a free period,' Ryan added, pausing to remind himself to try to sound calm. He liked Grace and they were friends (he thinks) but after that Hufflepuff girl... social situations bothered him more with each person who tried to be near him socially. 'Uh, you... Do you have plans?' he anxiously asked Toby, yet couldn't make eye contact.
At this rate everyone's going to think he just avoid girls, but Ryan didn't know what to say to the Hufflepuff girl or not to Grace so it was just easier to pretend there wasn't an additional conversation going on. He decided to just keep his hood up and stare at his plate. Though he did shoot her an offended look when she mentioned spider bites.
'No, I've stayed away from those,' he said, refusing to ever let her forget what she put him through with that horrible blue spider. Ryan shuddered at the memory. 'Do you still have that disgusting, wriggly bug you made me hold?'

Jacob could spot trouble a mile away, though it wasn't normally that far because most of the time he was the one causing it. Yet as he headed to the Great Hall to save himself from starvation, he immediately noticed some sort of scene going on between some younger years. He eyed a Slytherin girl storming off, and was suspicious.
'You all right?' Jacob reached to nudge the Gryffindor first year as a show of support. 'Need some backup?' He said it in a joking tone, as to not imply the boy needed the help. Not that he was one to care for firstie-squabbles, but the Slytherin was older and he didn't know if she'd played a role in what was going on.
'Not being a prat, are you?' Jacob asked the other one. The Ravenclaw boy wasn't the usual suspect, but Jacob was ready to defend members of his own house regardless. If it was just a bit of usual nonsense, he'd continue on to his lunch but he had to be sure first. Besides, his morning was dull and he could use some amusement.
The fact that the Gryffindor boy might have caused the scene hadn't occurred to him.
Killed by Devin Kudosen by act of the Killing Curse. June #24, RPG year 1 -- he was a 5th year Gryffindor. Jacob died to save his best friend, Luckett Langford.

Amara was finished eating by the time something worth her vague attention happened. She was checking some notes where her plate used to be (she'd pushed it aside), but paused when she heard a discussion of Quidditch teams. She kept her gaze focused on her task, but listened - and rolled her eyes at everyone's poor team choices.
She recognised Lindsey's voice, and that Blackwood girl, but not the boy.
What caught her interest though was music to her captain ears. Not particularly pleasant music, since tryouts had already happened and two of the three in that group hadn't made an appearance, but it was music nevertheless. She had positions yet to fill.
'Seeker? You?' Amara's tone was unimpressed and intimidating, directed at the 4th year boy (well, she assumed that was his age) yet she still hadn't looked up. As if he wasn't worth her attention, merely her criticism. 'Strong words for someone who gave no impression of such on the day of tryouts.'
Then she did look up. Her offended gaze was one of laced warning - Tom would get the impression his next words should be chosen wisely.
Amara glanced at Sinead as well. That was her name, right? There hadn't been an indication she had any ambition for the team, yet her participation in the conversation left some room to work with. Lindsey was already on the team, and her opinions were invalid to Amara, so she ignored the 3rd year entirely.
'I only give positions to those who deserve it,' Amara added. She then waited, giving them the chance to express interest in the team so she could berate them for not showing up - or for them to dismiss it so she could berate them for being idiots.
What’s wrong with this guy! After being shoved aside, Ben had lost his balance and had tumbled to the floor. “What a snipe younker!”
When Ben’s confused brain had finally caught up to his body, he realized two things in rapid succession: Firstly, the floor did not feel like the floor: Hard, yes, but cold and stony - definitely not.
Secondly, he was lying right on top of Broccoli-Face, who’s face didn’t look like broccoli at all from up this close.
They were practically nose to nose; their bodies lined up perfectly like the folded wings of an Antipodean Opaleye – if one wing were bigger than the other. The bigger wing being Ben.
Wow, his eyes are really dark! Man, what a weird thought, must have eaten something bad, haven’t had lunch yet - the fall, jup, the fall’s rattled my brain…
“Well,” Ben scrambled to his feet and off Joe as fast es he could, nearly elbowing him in the process.
He held out his hand to him when an older boy nudged him. “We’re ok.”, Ben tried to laugh off the embarrassing situation. Let’s hope he hasn’t seen that.“We didn’t do anything. That rude guy over there pushed us for no reason." He pointed over to the Slytherin table. 'Move it or lose it'. I’m losing it alright!”
"I thought it was pretty fascinating, really" she replied to Arthur's words about the dwelling iguanatus, she was actually really looking forward to learning more about the creature and in the future. However, she knew that Arthur hadn't enjoyed the lesson too much and she wouldn't judge him too harshly for that, considering the iguanatus was a pretty dangerous creature.
At his question about Hanna, Elara shook her head "no, she was talking with Hathmore" it didn't seem like Hanna was interested in talking to her and that was fine- she would wait until she was ready and then she could apologise for shutting her out and acting as if it was her fault Hanna had been attacked by a moth when she'd been the idiot who'd provoked it.
She picked up a sandwich from her place and raised it to her lips when her gaze flickered towards the entrance to the hall where someone or someones seemed to be blocking the door. She didn't take much notice until she saw who exactly was involved- when she saw her cousin push another boy.
Scowling, she got to her feet "I'll be right back" she muttered to Arthur before hurrying towards where the first years were. It wasn't like Joe to start a fight- and she'd rather him not start doing so in the middle of the hall during meal times. By the time she arrived on the scene, she was just in time to see both boys scrambling to their feet after what looked like taking a tumble together.
"Hey, what's going on here?" she demanded, her tone accusatory as she looked between both boys- a fifth year had also arrived on the scene and she expected him to give her the answers she was looking for if the first years refused to play ball.

Lindsey smiled as Rose joined them and looked up just as Avery came and sat near by. "Hey Rose." She said to the younger year. When Avery growled, Lindsey looked at her friend concerned and glanced around for a moment. Was everything okay? She noticed that her lip seemed a little bloody and she looked around, noticing a set of squabbling first years.
"Hey Avery." She said cautiously, but gave her a friendly smile. Maybe she could get something for that lip from the healer? It looked like it hurt quite a bit. When Seabrook chimed into the conversation about seeker, she looked over at her. The girl didn't even acknowledge her and Lindsey wanted to wrinkle her nose at her. Why did she think she was better than everyone else?
When she mentioned about only giving the position to someone who earned it, Lindsey wanted to chime in that since no one else was jumping at the spot, she really couldn't be that picky.

"Wha-" - He barely had time to realize what was happening when he suddenly lost his footing and then hit the stone floor of the Great Hall. He took a while to regain his orientation as he suddenly was in close proximity of Ben Dover's face- too close for his liking.
Piercing blue eyes locked with his although Joe was surprised to see whatever anger or mischief had been there before fade from them to be replaced by something that resembled either awe or surprise. He could not really tell.
What he did realize however was that he was in fact lying on his back on the floor with Ben lying right on top of him.
He could feel his face flush, hot with embarassment and as well as Ben could not get to his feet too quickly- he even took the hand offered to him before his brain had even caught up with him and he remembered his resentment of the blond Gryffindor boy.
Joe suddenly found himself confronted by an older Gryffindor who asked if he had been a prat.
His eyes grew round, his mouth became dry as he tried to meet the fifth year's eyes.
How could he possibly answer this?
He knew house rivalry was a thing and eventhough Ben had (as usual) started it, maybe he should have been wiser than to humour Ben this time.
He shot a quizzical glance at Ben when he in fact blamed it on the Slytherin boy who had pushed them to the ground. It seemed Ben was full of surprises today. Joe put on a strained smile as he nodded along to Ben's tale. Perhaps they could get off easy.
His hopes of getting off easy died however when he heard the accusatory inquiry of his cousin Elara.
Joe turned his head to face her and fumbled at his coat with awkward hands as he tried to avoid her gaze.
"Nothing, Ellie. Just being in the wrong place at the wrong time?", he piped up. He could not be sure what his cousin had seen. Maybe she had seen him fall and come over to help?
Lindsey shook her head towards Jade and let out a sigh as she grabbed some bread and honey. "Not really... Went walking and got a pumpkin at the patch." She said simply before she put her chin on her hand. "One of the professor needs some, so I was gonna go back maybe after class and grab one or two more. Though it might get me some extra credit." She said with a sigh as she looked up at the sound of some squabbling young years.
At the mention of class, she let out a sigh. "It came in handy for me today... I didn't really want to carry that pumpkin all the way up to the common room... Oh, by the way, it is on my bed." She said, not wanting to surprise anyone with a pumpkin in the middle of the dorm.
At the mention of the broom, she smiled. "It must of arrived after I brought the pumpkin up. I'll start a letter in charms before class starts and send it before dinner." She said, as she remembered that she still needed to write to her parents anyway. Soon, she looked up to see Jacob coming to the table and gave him a friendly smile. It seemed he was dealing with a first year, but she just returned to her food.

Grace nodded at Toby's response. "Alright." She hoped she could tell Gerald about the monster soon, and she had a few ideas about how to research, most of which were the library. After all, that was where they had found the book to translate the mysterious languages. Maybe they'd have weird scary bear creature books as well.
She glanced over and saw two boys from her class, Joe and Ben, if she recalled properly, shoving each other. Well, she had better not get involved with that. Drawing attention to herself, especially in that way, Grace had decided, was not a very good idea.
Grace wasn't sure if Ryan was trying to focus on talking to Toby or if he just thought that she was done talking because her question was answered. She was suddenly a lot more aware that she was possibly interrupting. Should she go sit at her own table? She wondered a little bit, not quite sitting down with Ryan and Toby but still standing near them.
She wasn't really sure what to do, now. Grace raised her hands in some form of mock surrender when Ryan shot her that offended look. She hadn't known he was so upset about it. She had thought holding the spider was cool. "Yeah, I do. You want it?" she looked at Toby, then decided she should explain. "You should've seen him! He held the spider for like, ever while I emptied a bottle of pumpkin juice to hold it." she sounded impressed, like it was a bit of a big deal. It had been, to Grace, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to get her five ingredients for her potions kit as fast.

Arthur shrugged. To each their own. He liked other creatures, just not fire-breathing ones. Maybe if Professor Hathmore had introduced them to the ice-breathing iguanatus he would've been more comfortable. "I need to be more prepared for stuff like that later. I mean, maybe I should learn how to react better..." he thought again of what had happened with the daymoth and frowned.
He watched as Elara stood up and walked over to a pair of younger boys, who appeared to have been or currently were fighting. He wondered what it was about. Trading cards, maybe? He knew some people could be a little defensive over their Chocolate Frog Cards. He personally didn't see the big deal. Old dead wizards were boring. Old living wizards might have been more boring.
He wondered if she was going to be a while. Arthur took a bite of his sandwich as he watched Elara talk to one of the boys. She would make a good prefect, he considered, going out of her way to stop two random boys for fighting. He was at least glad for the chance to eat more of his sandwich.
Rose smiled at Lindsey but before she spoke she heard the growl that came from Avery and shrank a little in her seat. She didn't know if it was okay to speak but she looked to Lindsey and noticed that she seemed worried about the angry girl. Rose leaned into Lindsey so as to be quiet and whispered. "Is everything okay Lindsey?"
Tom was pulled out of his conversation when he heard Amara's voice deride him and his dreams of Quidditch stardom. Who was she to rain on his parade? ...well, besides being the captain of the Slytherin Quidditch team. Normally such a verbal assault would have caused Tom to retreat deep into his shell; he would have tried to make himself invisible and not responded. But as he had been telling himself since the start of the semester... no more.
He'd said it a hundred times so far if he'd said it once. This was his year. He wasn't going to be that shy and timid Muggleborn he'd been his whole Hogwarts career. No, he was going to make something of himself. He was going to make people like Amara remember and respect him. He read Amara's gaze and quickly determined she wasn't one who was used to being challenged, although she looked like she relished being called out. If Tom wanted to get a belated try out for the Quidditch team, something he hadn't really considered until this very moment, he'd have to choose his words wisely.
His strategy was to try and sound as remorseful as possible. "I hated missing try outs, I really did," he said with as much sincerity as he could muster. "They wouldn't let me out of detention no matter how hard I begged... and trust me, I begged." The lie came so easily that he surprised himself with it. "I wanted to come ask you for another shot to try out, but you always seemed so busy and I didn't want any special exceptions made for me anyway," he continued on. "But if you'll let me try out again, I'll prove to you how good a Seeker I'll be."
He hoped his eyes didn't betray how nervous he felt after making this gamble. Was Amara the type who would check to see if he really had been assigned detention? He didn't mention a reason or Professor to try to keep it as ambiguous as possible. He shot a glance towards Lindsey and Sinead, hoping they'd back him up.
Hanna made her way into the hall a little while into lunch, she hadn't done anything after her chat with Hathmore but she didn't feel the need to rush to lunch. Instead she took the longer route to the hall, it gave her some alone time and meant she could think in peace.
A sigh fell from the Slytherins lips as she made her way towards her house table, quickly throwing a small look towards Arthur and Elara; they look good, it hurt a little but she was glad that Elara had someone else... she need them now that Hanna was distancing herself. As Hanna got closer to her table she couldn't help but overhear the topic of conversation, a small smile pulling at her cheeks and a laugh falling from her at Amara's comment.
"Does that mean you think I deserved my position?" She couldn't stop the teasing tone that came with her words as she took the seat across from the Captain; it shocked her slightly at how she could talk to Amara like they were friends but pushed it down as she filled her plate. "We do kinda need more players, I don't particularly want to swap between seeker and keeper every time we play even if I'm amazing at both" A joking smile pulled at her cheeks as she spoke but it didn't quiet reach her eyes, there was a slight sadness to her eyes but it was not obvious to anyone but those who knew of the previous day.
She didn't know how much time had passed with her just picking at her food, only when she when her name was called did she come back to reality. The new presence had startled her slightly but it quickly turned to confusion as her eyes landed on the girl in front of her.
"Hi... Mackenzie?" Charlotte had never spoken to the girl personally but she had a habit of remembering names, "I'm good, thank you, how are you?"; this felt weird to the youngest Doren, small talk was strange and the fact that someone wanted to sit with her was almost stranger.

Lindsey looked over at Rose as she asked if everything was okay and then back at her plate. "I'm sure it will be fine." She said, glancing over at Avery before she looked between Amara and Tom, wondering what was about to happen and if he would stand up to the girl. As she cut her sausage, she looked up to see Hanna join them as she laughed.
A smile came to her lip as she saw Hanna. "Tis good to see ye, Hanna." She said to the older girl before she looked up at Tom who spoke. As he spoke about missing try-outs, she couldn't tell if he was lying or not, but it sounded good and she was impressed either way. The boy didn't shy away from the captain of the slytherin team and she admired that.
When Hanna continued her thought on the subject, Lindsey nodded in agreement. "Aye, we need a seeker... Hanna is great, but we canna leave the goals exposed while she tries for the Snitch... Even if the ball give a huge score, that doesna mean that we win..." Lindsey said as she looked between Tom, Hanna and Amara.
