Rules

We ensure this RPG is safe and enjoyable for everyone. Our members are important to us and the growth of HAU; please reach out with any issues or suggestions you may have.

1. Under no circumstances should you give out your password or reveal personal / sensitive information. If someone's asking for this, please inform staff immediately. We also have no tolerance for bullying or spam. HAU is a diverse and LGBTQ+ friendly community.

2. Try to make RP posts at least a paragraph -- roughly 5-7 sentences. It gives us something to respond to. It's only a guideline; we understand that sometimes a post needs to be short and brief.
Every RP post must be in third person + past tense, and character dialogue in bold.

3. 6th and 7th year students are reached by finishing the year previous due to extra skills and opportunities. If your character has Hogwarts-age siblings not part of the Bloodlines feature, they can be mentioned but it isn't necessary for them to be actual characters on site.

4. This is a literate roleplay; we'd appreciate if you proof-read posts prior to submitting them. If you need it, there's a spell-check function available when posting. Please avoid making “walls of text” by breaking up bigger paragraphs for better readability (as it's easier to mod, and some use mobile, or have disabilities etc) -- if this doubles the length of your post, that's fine. Try not to start dialogue in the middle of a paragraph or at the start / end of a big one.

5. God-moding and Autoing of others won't be tolerated. While you control your own character, you also control their family when necessary (going home for the summer etc) unless they too are members of this site or are Bloodline NPCs.

6. Keep swearing and adult content to a minimum; nothing too vulgar or excessive. Any character under the age of 20 can only date etc someone who's no more than 1 year older or younger than them. Crushes are fine, but for appropriate reasons characters must be at least 13 (3rd year) before dating / romance.

7. If you wish to speak out of character in a RP zone, do so parenthetically and mark it as OOC. Other variations work, so long as it's clear and separate.
Example: [OOC: _______]

8. We understand members have different amounts of spare time, but try to be active when you can. It ruins the experience for others if they’re left waiting too long for a reply. If you're going to be away for a period of time, notify a staff member (on site / in Discord) or use the "Member Network" area on the main page.

9. To keep everything balanced and displayed properly across all themes and features, posting templates aren't used on HAU -- except for a character's Plotter / Journal / PP Memories, where you have creative freedom.

10. A new member starts with 1 character. When you've reach a post count of 70 (or 50, if applying for Bloodlines), you're allowed a 2nd character if you can manage both -- PM the Admin to make a request. Any additional character should be in a different Hogwarts year than your other/s. The maximum Hogwarts-age characters per member is 3 or 4. Full details are in our Getting Characters thread.

11. Character accounts that haven't posted for 4 months (or 2, if only a handful of posts were made in their first week then nothing) are considered for removal. If you intend to return, let us know and your account will be safe. There are limited spaces in each Hogwarts dormitory so prolonged inactivity means those characters may be removed to allow place for a new member. If you no longer want to play a character, or you intend to leave the site, please inform the Admin beforehand. You'll lose all progress.
Note: If you'd simply like to start over with a new character, replacing the old one in the process, that can easily be arranged.

12. Your character cannot be in two places at once and time-turners don't exist; you should leave an RP thread before posting in another. The "Sorting Ceremony", "Classes", and "Quidditch" boards are the only exceptions, when relevant.

13. Spells your character knows are shown in your profile under "Magical Skills", with incantations and info. More are learned through classes or quests. To cast a spell, have the spoken incantation in italics. “General Magic” should be done realistically according to your character's age and skill. Use of magic is monitored.

14. Your character can be injured or die. The Hospital Wing (students) and Saint Mungo's (adults or during the summer) are always available. Healing draughts or antidotes also help. Choosing to duel, partake in quests, use Potions / Herbology kits, play Quidditch, or have a high-risk career may endanger your character, but they won't be killed without warning. Be alert and choose your battles wisely, even if your characters don't.

15. When creating a RP thread (except during the summer), include the current # at the start of its title. On HAU, we divide each month into #'s rather than days / dates to ensure effective passage of time. The RPG Chart is for reference of current time, weather, and otherwise which should be considered when posting.
Example title: “#15 – Sneaking out again”.

We want your RP experience to be enjoyable, adventurous, and fair. If you get stuck and don't know how to proceed or what to do next, let staff know. The "Need Help?" section on the main page is always open for any questions or concerns you have. We also have an active Discord where staff and members are online daily. You can message a staff member if you prefer discussing something in private.
