Personality
Jade is often described as a gothic rockstar. She dresses in black, including her favourite leather jacket, and gives the impression that she doesn't care what anyone thinks. She's blunt, often to the point of being harsher than intended, and isn't afraid to stand up for herself or others. Underneath all that bravado, there's insecurity and a fear of getting close to people.
She's stubborn to a fault; when Jade gets an idea in her head, it's very hard for her to let go without seeing it through. She holds strong to judgements and beliefs, though is open to having her mind changed – with convincing evidence that makes more sense than her original opinion. She's competitive, not for the rewards and praise, but relishes in being better than someone or having her achievements recognised.
There's a spiteful and vengeful nature to Jade; if someone's wronged her or her friends, there's no doubt in anyone's mind that she'd retaliate – often in a form of humiliation. She's opinionated, vocal, and easily offended, but she tries to be a good person. She's unapologetically herself; if someone doesn't like something about her, she just brushes it off.
Despite her apparent talent for Transfiguration, Jade struggles in her classes. The worst of all is Potions, where even her most supportive friends know to keep their distance if a heated cauldron's involved. With her dislike of anything “girly”, one might assume Jade to be sporty or outdoorsy but neither of those appeal to her either. She'd fallen flat on her face during her first flying lesson – an event that her best friend, Tiana, never let her live down. Jade does enjoy watching Quidditch, though mostly for the drama and chaos rather than any sporting interest.
Jade is great at quick-witted alibis. She's usually the first to jump to a friend's defence with one excuse or another to get them out of trouble, or partake in a variety of trouble-making. She's good at diversions, and doesn't think twice about shifting the blame or taking the fall if she deems it worth the consequences.

Backstory
Jade's parents married young, but it was a while before they were ready to grow their family. And when they did, they were blessed with the perfect child. Their beautiful baby girl, who was usually content and happy, was everything they'd dreamed of.
Several years later, they had another daughter – Jade. The two girls could not be more different. Tess was polite and obedient, whereas Jade ran circles around their parents and got into mischief at every opportunity. Her parents were not prepared for such a drastic change in parenthood, and unintentionally transferred the frustration of their own shortcomings onto Jade.
Resentment between the sisters grew over the years. Tess was annoyed that Jade's antics and differences led to gaining more time or attention from family and friends. Jade was hurt by unlimited adoration and praise Tess received from everyone – even strangers, who complimented what a great person or witch Tess was. The girls were civil and got along okay enough, but resentment was always under the surface. The longer they spent in the same room, the more likely it would lead to arguments.
It got worst when Tess attended Hogwarts. Like their mother, she was sorted into Slytherin. She wrote home often, to her parents but rarely to Jade - unless for special occasions. Their parents missed Tess a lot, and looked to Jade to fill the void – except Jade was nothing like her sister. In their minds, they were trying to help Jade improve and become successful. But all Jade could hear was how perfect Tess was, and how awful or unruly she was by comparison.
As expected, Tess also excelled at Hogwarts. She joined her house Quidditch team, later became prefect, then did exceptionally well in both her OWLs and NEWTs. By graduation, she was already on the path to becoming an extraordinary Healer for Saint Mungos. Jade was furious. There was nothing noteworthy she could do because Tess had already done it. When she began her own journey at Hogwarts, Jade decided she was done with her family's favourism. She rarely wrote home, ignored Tess at family gatherings, and locked herself in her room with her music over the summers.
Her father's a muggleborn, sorted into Hufflepuff. It's his side of the family that they saw most often. Jade grew up familiar with Muggle things and their way of life, having little preference for either magical or non-magical. Her paternal grandmother said Jade was such a spitfire, amused by her boldness yet often theorised that some children were just “born a certain way”.
Her mother's side of the family were less amused. They were esteemed purebloods from a prestigious line of ambitious and proper-mannered witches or wizards. Jade couldn't be sure if she'd ever actually met them, but their disapproving opinions of her got added to the mix. It wasn't often that anyone was outright mean to her, yet they all had the same disappointment in their eyes when they saw her.
However, one of Jade's relatives attends Hogwarts with her. They met in first year, on the train – though they ended up choosing different compartments afterwards. Their interest was brief and fleeting, believing their relation was probably almost non-existent – like a second cousin twice removed or whatever. They got along well, but saw each other more as classmates than anything else. It wasn't until the summer before 5th year that Jade overheard her parents talking, and she learned that Nyx was actually a direct cousin – the daughter of her mother's estranged brother.
She's growing up and learning to be less angry at the world. Yet despite still wanting to distance herself from family, Jade remains curious about Nyx. Her best friend's more of a sister to her than Tess ever was, but still Jade wonders on what she'd overheard. Maybe Nyx is a chance at something new, to develop a familial bond that she never experienced with Tess?
