Rules

We want to ensure this RPG is safe and enjoyable for everyone. Our members are important to us and the growth of this RPG; please reach out with any issues or suggestions you may have. Not following the general site rules below will result in consequence or punishment befitting the situation or severity of the rule/s broken

1. Under no circumstances should you give out your password or reveal personal/sensitive information. If someone's asking for this, please inform a staff member immediately. We also have no tolerance for bullying or spam.

2. You don't need to be an experienced role-player to participate in this text-based game. Experience is always a plus, but not necessary; it's a skill that can be developed over time. Being unfamiliar with Harry Potter won't hinder your RPG experience either, as you'll learn along the way.

3. Try to make each RP post at least a paragraph in length - roughly 5-7 sentences. It gives us something to respond to. Ideally, include some description of what your character's thinking/feeling/etc. This rule is a guideline; we understand that every now and again a post needs to be short and brief, just don't make a habit of it.
Every RP post must be in third person and past tense.

4. 6th and 7th years at Hogwarts are only reached by finishing the year previous because NEWT students have increased advantages and skills compared to other years. 5th years and above are expected to be active members, so choose your starting year wisely.

5. This is a literate roleplay, so we'd really appreciate it if you proof-read all posts prior to submitting them. If you need it, there's a spell-check function available when posting.

6. God-moding and Autoing will not be tolerated. While you control your own character, you also control his/her family when necessary (going home for the summer, etc) unless they too are members of this site.

7. Please keep swearing and adult content to a minimum; nothing too vulgar or excessive.

8. If you wish to speak out of character in a RPG zone make sure you do so parenthetically and mark it as OOC.
Example: [OOC: _______]

9. We understand members have different amounts of spare time, but please try to be as active as you can. It ruins the experience for others if they’re left waiting too long for a reply. If you're going to be away for a period of time, notify a staff member or use the "Member Network" area on the main page.

10. Using smileys during a non-IC section or OOC paragraph is fine, just try not to use them excessively. However, using them in an IC post is not acceptable. It breaks the sentence structure, pulls away from the actual post, and is considered really annoying.

11. New members are permitted 1 character. When you reach a post count of 400, you're permitted a 2nd character if you want it and know you can actively handle both – PM the Admin to make a request. An additional character must be in a different Hogwarts year than any other character you play. The maximum Hogwarts-age characters per non-staff member is 3. To get a 3rd character both your 1st and 2nd ones must have a post count over 700. Only 1 of your characters can be on their house Quidditch team and/or hold a Prefect position.
If your character has Hogwarts-age siblings, they can be mentioned but it isn't necessary for them to be actual characters on site. Anyone caught with a non-permitted character account will have it removed.

12. All non-default avatars must be approved by staff as they're specially-edited. This can be done in the “Avatar & Face Claim” area in the Enrolment section of the main page. Read the guidelines carefully before submitting.

13. Character accounts that haven't been logged into for 4 months will be considered for removal. If you're going to be absent, let us know and your account will be safe. There are limited spaces in each Hogwarts dormitory so prolonged inactivity means characters may be removed to allow place for a new member. If you no longer want to use your character or you intend to leave the site, please inform the Admin beforehand so necessary changes can take place. You will lose all progress.
Note: If you'd simply like to start over with a new character, replacing the old one in the process, that can easily be arranged.

14. Try to use items to keep your inventory at a reasonable size. Some can be traded among students or exchanged for prizes. The only exceptions to this rule are beans and Potions ingredients.

15. Your character cannot be in two places at once and time-turners don't exist on site; you should leave an RP thread before posting in another. If you're still posting elsewhere when your class begins, your character may be considered late and receive a detention.

16. Be sure to understand how magic works on site before you begin playing. What specific spells your character knows are shown in your profile under "Magical Skills", with incantations and descriptions of their use. More can be learned through classes or special events. To cast a spell you must have the incantation in italics even if it's non-verbal. “General Magic” must be done realistically according to your character's age and skill. All use of magic is carefully monitored.

17. Your character be injured or die. The Hospital Wing is always available for restoring health - certain healing draughts also help. Choosing not to duel, partake in quests, use Potions/Herbology kits, or play Quidditch will decrease concern for your character's mortality but sometimes the risk is worth it. Be alert and choose your battles wisely, even if your character doesn't.

18. When creating a new RP thread, include the current # in its title. On HAU we divide each month into #'s rather than days to ensure effective passage of time. The RPG Chart table on the main page is for reference of current time, weather, and otherwise which must be taken into consideration when posting.
Example title: “#15 – Sneaking out again”.

19. And finally, have fun!

The "Need Help?" section on the main page is always open for any questions or concerns you have; use it whenever needed though we also have an active Discord. You can message a staff member if you prefer discussing something in private.
